Exclusive interview with Alex Machacek 2006-10-22 15:46:11
Guitarist Alex Machacek is one of the great new voices in jazz fusion. His latest album [SIC] is really making waves for it's originality, and the stunning performances of the musicians involved (one of whom is legendary drummer Terry Bozzio). I had a chance to interview
Alex recently, and found him to be very gracious guy who was more than happy to answer my questions.
The Guitar Channel: Your latest album, [SIC], is one of the freshest-sounding jazz fusion albums I've heard in a long time. The liner notes state it was recorded in Vienna, Austin, and Los Angeles. How long did it take to put the whole album together? Was it something you recorded bit by bit over time?
Alex Machacek: Well, thank you for your compliment! This album took me a long time - all in all about 5 years. But I didn't continuously work on it, I worked on some tunes but got distracted by other projects. I started when I still lived in Vienna, recorded bits and pieces there, I used some "drum - l Read more:Exclusive

Nice write-up of the "Concert For Cliff" with Vai and Satriani 2006-10-03 18:16:25 Junkman from KNAC has written a great review of the "Concert
For Cliff
" that took place this past Saturday at the House of Blues in Hollywood. This was the Joe Satriani
/Steve Vai benefit concert for their friend Cliff Cultreri. Cliff is a music industry veteran who is currently suffering from a host of
Auto-Immune and Connective-Tissue disorders. The show featured guest performers Steve Lukather, Paul Gilbert, Scott Henderson, Johnny Hiland, Dweezil Zappa, and Johnny A. The review features the full set-list, including all the details of the various jams.

Zune price and release date announced 2006-09-28 23:06:38 I don't post much tech news anymore, but I thought this was worthy. Microsoft has officially announced the release date and pricing for the Zune
mp3/video player. It will cost $249 and be released November 14th. The specs and price
-point make this a very compelling alternative to the iPod, in my opinion.

New domain name for The Guitar Channel 2006-09-25 22:02:30 After 2 years, I've finally gotten around to registering a new domian name for The GuitarChannel
. The new url is:
http://www.guitar-channel.com
The site has not moved (the old url will still work). The new domain
name just forwards to the Typepad site. I still have a few links to update, but it should be good to go.
Also, I've made some changes to the title information that gets displayed when you play the Guitar Channel stream. I'm still working on it. It should just have the url, with the song artist and title afterwards. Depending on the player you are using, the SHOUTcast description may appear in the scroll as well. I'd rather not have that, but it's a work in progress. The stream may stop and start sometimes over the next couple of days while I tweak it.

Review: The Michael Landau Group Live 2006-11-03 16:15:27 Guitarist MichaelLandau
has appeared on countless recordings. In addition to being a studio legend, he's fronted several great bands over the years (such as Burning Water, and the Raging Honkies). He rarely releases "solo" albums however, so when he does it's something to take note of.
His latest album, "The Michael Landau Group
Live" is a mixture of vocal and instrumental tunes, and provides an excellent showcase for the variety of styles Landau likes to explore. The 2-disc set is arranged with the blues and heavier stuff up front on disc 1, with the jazzier pieces on disc 2. The songs were all recorded live at The Baked Potato in North Hollywood CA between 2004 and 2006. The other players appearing on the album are Jimmy Johnson and Chris Roy - bass; Toss Panos, Gary Novak, and Ronald Bruner Jr - drums; the always great Scott Kinsey - keys; and Chuck Kavooras - slide guitar (one track). This album is very similar in concept to Landau's last live album, "Live 2000", released in 20

Review: Viva Carlos! 2006-11-06 12:09:26 Jeff Richman does it again. After producing guitar tributes to John Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, and Steely Dan, Richman serves up the music of Carlos
Santana for his latest project. "Viva Carlos!" (Tone Center) is probably the most interesting tribute Richman has produced so far. The rich Latin rhythms give this collection a completely different vibe than the previous tributes. As a result, the guest guitarists who appear on the album are playing in musical situations they don't normally explore. The backup band this time features Abe Laboriel - bass, Dave Weckl - drums, Luis Conte - percussion, Peter Wolf - keys, and Richman himself on rhythm guitar.
Most of the guest guitarists have appeared on past Richman tributes. Part of what makes this collection so interesting, however, are the new players Richman enlists this time around. Vinnie Moore makes his first appearance on a Richman tribute album, and hopefully it won't be his last. Moore's track "Se A Cabo" opens

Review: Jazz Pistols - Live 2006-11-11 19:49:33 After 3 studio albums, the German jazz-fusion trio Jazz Pistols
have released their first live recording. "Jazz Pistols - live" was recorded in Germany on 2/5/05, and it really shows how dynamic this band can be. Jazz Pistols music ranges from lighter jazz fare to heavy fusion, sometimes within the same song.
Bassist Christopher Victor Kaiser, a Berklee grad, often uses tapping to add chords and double-stops to his parts, making the band sound bigger than just a three-piece. He employs the technique to great effect in this live setting. Guitarist Stephan Ivan Schafer is impressive on the album as well. He knows exactly how to build intensity in his solos, often reaching points where you think he's gonna fly off the rails. His fast-picked runs are always dropped in at just the right spot too.
Songs like "Yellow Fellow" and "Mystic Train" show off the trio's lighter side. These are hip tunes, but the band really shines on the heavier stuff. "Take the brake" is one of the standout
