The Latest Adventures With Dr. Lung
2008-05-22 23:04:00
Like I mentioned yesterday, Maddie's trip to Dr. Lung's office was basically successful. We were worried that Maddie would be a mess in her office what with the NON STOP crying, but I think she must know English or something because she actually listened to us when we begged her to sack up and not cry in front of the doctor. I know you're thinking that she's a doctor who specializes in pediatrics,

The Great Teething Test
2008-05-21 20:39:00
As soon as Maddie's pediatrician (looooove) said it was okay to give Maddie Baby Motrin, I ran to the store to purchase all of your teething suggestions. I was surprised that I couldn't find ANY of the homeopathic teething tablets. Of course, I only went to one store, but I figured that since this is California, we'd have all that healthy stuff everywhere. Apparently the Ralph's by our house doesn

There Should Be Teething Remedies for Adults
2008-05-21 00:22:00
I keep starting this entry, only to stop because of the cryyyyyyyyyyyying. I don't know how such a little thing doesn't just pass out from sheer exhaustion! I know I am practically falling over. Any.Way. WOW! I was so excited to hear from so many of you. I loved finding out who reads about our little family, and when you leave a link to your own blogs, I get really happy! Thanks for all the advice

Some Teething Wisdom
2008-05-20 00:49:00
Maddie is, quite seriously, one of the toughest people I know. She's had some insanely painful procedures in her short life, but she still has a smile on her face. It blows our minds how she can have an IV placed but still be happy. I mean really, would anyone blame her if she was a moody, sullen girl? We'd be all, "Maddie, smile!" and she'd point to her chest and say, "Um, HELLO, will you PLEASE

The New Ashton & Demi
2008-05-18 23:30:00
After my last post, I was rounding up my torches and Molotov cocktails when Maddie's pediatrician (looooove) called me. She'd heard about the results of Maddie's sweat test and wanted to make sure we were okay and that we weren't worried. She said that in her medical opinion, Maddie does NOT have CF, and while her sweat test was elevated, she thinks it was a lab error. She also said that it IS a g

Next Verse, Same as the First
2008-05-16 19:05:00
The nurse from Dr. Lung's office called me at work today with Maddie's latest Cystic Fibrosis test results. I have called them a million times in the past with little reciprocity, so when the nurse identified herself I knew I wasn't going to like what she had to say.I need to explain the basics here so that what I write doesn't sound too much like medical jargon. On Tuesday, Maddie had a sweat chl

Two of Us Sunday Driving, Not Arriving
2008-05-16 00:57:00
I'm a working mom, just like millions of other women. It's hard to leave Maddie in the mornings, especially when she, Mike, and Rigby are all snuggled up in our heavenly bed. It can be hard for me to swallow my jealousy of the bond Mike and Maddie have. She loves him so much. He can calm her down by walking into her line of vision, and the smiles she gives him are amazing. We are lucky Mike works

You Should See What I Weigh in Grams
2008-05-15 00:48:00
I was chatting with my friend Casey last night about our pregnancies. We both had pretty crappy experiences with being in the family way. We weren't having a pity party so much as telling war stories. When she asked me to name one thing that went right in my pregnancy (besides having Maddie, of course), I sat there for a while trying to think of something before I gave up. I don't know how I forgo

The Skinny
2008-05-13 17:37:00
check out the previous post to see who won the contest!Besides obsessing on Madeline's weight, we actually DO have other things going on around this joint. My first Mother's Day as the title character was GREAT. Mike let me sleep all night, and in the morning he brought Maddie in to snuggle with me, which was really nice. While we cuddled and watched Tivo, Mike made me breakfast. Rigby helped him

And the Winner is...

Maddie and Sadie both had excellent weigh-ins yesterday. Maddie had been hovering at 9lbs 12 oz for weeks now, while Sadie's last weight was 9lbs 3oz. They both gained weight!!!Maddie now weighs an absolutely arm-tiring 10lbs 4oz!Sadie is pushing around newborns and puppies at 9lbs 12oz!Stefanie and I (and I'm sure our husbands, too) are very relieved that the girls both gained a good amount of we

Guess the Babies' Weight, Win Some Prizes
2008-05-12 17:19:00
So...listen. I have a confession to make. I have internet friends. I know that makes me sound like I play Second Life with a bunch of nerds. While it's true that maybe I've dabbled in Second Life (I was on bed rest and it was after that one episode of "The Office" so gimme a break), sometimes I get embarrassed when I refer to my internet friends because it sounds so...hmm. Lame? I dunno. Point bei

Four Generations of Mothers
2008-05-11 00:36:00
In the hallway of my parents' home, there is this framed picture of four generations. My great-grandmother is at the top, my grandmother and mother side by side in the middle, and me, as a seven year old, at the bottom. I remember the day the picture was taken, I was pissed because I'd been forced to curl my hair and wear a dress. My smile is forced and small, the uniqueness of the situation lost

A Teenager's Obscene Letter of Love
2008-05-08 15:20:00
A month or two ago, I was at a farmer's market a few blocks from our house. I love farmer's markets, the fresh produce and flowers make me feel all healthy and natural. I was in line for a hot dog (I said feel healthy and natural, not actually healthy and natural), and I couldn't help but overhear the group of four teenage girls standing behind me. They were only 13 or so, since they spoke about t

The Birth and Triumph of Madeline Alice
2008-05-07 01:50:00
Two mornings after Madeline was born, I was in a hospital room on the general patient floor, shivering. I'd checked out against medical advice the night before because my husband called to say our baby was dying. I'd only seen her for a second, and I couldn't let her pass without me. She stabilized after I arrived at the hospital she'd been transferred to (the one I'd delivered at didn't have the

Skinny Baby

Maddie had a great appointment with Dr. Lung today. It helped that Maddie was in a fantastic mood - smiling, laughing, and babbling like crazy. Dr. Lung about fell over when she walked into the room and was greeted with Maddie's ramblings. "She is so talkative! Whatever you're doing, keep doing it!" Dr. Lung said. What she didn't know is Maddie was saying, "Dr. Lung, you smell like a cutter. Stay

Our dinner with The Hulk
2008-05-05 00:04:00
Maddie is definitely teething. She is drooling like crazy and always has a hand in her mouth (except in this picture, of course). Today she started grabbing things and pulling them toward her face, so I think in a day or two she is going to be chewing on everything she can get her hands on. Time to start refrigerating the teething toys.Maddie has a follow-up appointment with Dr. Lung tomorrow, so

Maddie and the Boys
2008-05-03 22:31:00
So far Maddie has slept well in her crib. I put a couple pillows between the mattress and the box spring to prop her head up, since that's what she was used to in the hospital. I did a good job of elevating one end of the crib because when I went in to check on her at one point, she was laying sideways at the lower end of the crib! Whoops. I removed one of the pillows and she has since stayed in p

Why the hospital sucked (besides the obvious)
2008-05-02 23:49:00
We had a variety of Maddie-related tasks to do today - prescriptions, follow-up appointments & consults, and lessons on how to mix her medications - so when I woke up this morning feeling like my appendages weighed 1,000 pounds each I knew it would be a long day. I had a physical therapy appointment at 7am with a different therapist than usual. She couldn't believe all the knots in my back and nec

The Trickery of Dr. Lung
2008-05-01 23:25:00
Sleep wasn't much of an option for me last night thanks to a few factors. The first was Maddie's oxygenation study. I was determined everything would read correctly, so I was up constantly making sure the monitor was reading correctly. I don't think I've checked on her breathing more since the first night she came home from the hospital. The monitor malfunctioned about four times during the night.

I'm not President of the Dr. Lung fan club
2008-05-01 00:08:00
The Upper GI today showed what I already knew - Maddie doesn't have any fissures between her trachea and esophagus, so reflux is extremely unlikely. But try telling that to Dr. Lung. She said, "well, this was just a snap shot. I would like her to have a pH probe in the future." I'm thinking we'll probably decline that. It's just not an issue for her. Hopefully she'll forget that idea.We managed to

so many acronyms, too little time
2008-04-30 00:39:00
The CT scan went well this morning. I was really nervous about her not eating for an extended period of time, but her night nurse did a great job of helping me make sure Maddie ate at the last possible moments. It was a bit of fiasco getting her down to the CT area. They insisted on bringing her crib down, and tried to get me to lay her in the crib for transport. I knew if I laid her down she woul

Every time I mention cystic fibrosis, take a shot.
2008-04-29 01:10:00
Maddie just had an IV inserted in her right arm. She cried and whimpered the whole time and it about broke my heart. Now she is sleeping so deeply I think the USC Marching band could come through and she wouldn't notice. Just another mommy scar that I will throw in her face when she's an ungrateful teenager. The IV is for her CT scan tomorrow morning. This is the test she has to be sedated for, be

Introducing Dr. Lung
2008-04-28 00:56:00
We finally met the elusive Dr. Lung. She introduced herself and listened to Maddie, and then said that she wants to give Maddie a full work-up so she can get to know her anatomy. She is going to get a CT scan to completely rule out pneumonia, and it will also show the structure of her lungs in great detail. She'll have to be sedated for this, which is kind of scary but makes sense - you can't tell

Maddie Marches Down Wilshire Blvd
2008-04-27 00:48:00
Today I walked five miles and my daughter was transferred to a different hospital. I know you think both of those things are lies since I a) abhor exercise, and b) Maddie has been on the brink of transfer every day, but today both actually happened! We started the day by attending the March for Babies in Griffith Park. Mike and I, along with 15 awesome friends and family members, walked five miles

The Push Up of Shame
2008-05-24 22:01:00
I like to think of myself as a sporty girl. I grew up playing softball and participating in track and field, and I can play most sports decently enough to not make a fool of myself. I haven't gone to the gym regularly since before I was put on bed rest, but I've been attending physical therapy twice a week and my endurance and strength have sloooowly been returning. We have a gym at work with a lo

The Beginning of a Beautiful Relationship
2008-05-29 00:16:00
Maddie wasn't worse this morning. So that's...something. Ugh, I'm sick of worrying. Because of her varying discomforts (cough, teeth, PMS), she is not the biggest fan of eating. Mike is pretty sick of feeding her baby-bird style with a medicine dropper, although he would never admit it. We knew we had to think of something different.Yesterday Maddie reached four months adjusted age. Dr. Looove sai

An Urgent Visit That DOESN'T End In Hospitalization
2008-05-28 01:15:00
On Saturday, Maddie had the tiniest beginnings of a rattle in her chest. It almost sounded more like she had something in her throat, and she could just clear it, she'd be fine. When she'd cough, the rattle would go away, so we figured she was breathing through all the saliva that comes with teething. I went about my business, meeting a friend for coffee and then going to work for a few hours (yea

One Day Closer to Menopause
2008-05-30 00:54:00
I love birthdays. My birthday countdown started on Tuesday, and I'm sure it surprised everyone who knows me in real life that I didn't mention it that day. I am the type of person that has birthday months. But I love everyone's birthdays, not just my own. Birthdays are a great reason to get together and have fun and open shiny presents. Not that I'm in it for the presents...okay, I totally am. I l
