Baby Steps: Meeting the Snowflaking Challenge
2008-05-20 17:43:55
What is snowflaking? This is a simple concept I’ve just recently come across on some financial blogs that refers to building your wealth just a bit at a time. The term might be new, but of course the concept isn’t....

2008-05-19 13:10:27
I started investing when I was doing my undergrad degree. I opened a retirement savings account as soon as I had saved up the minimum amount for it. Since then I have read countless personal finance books – some at...

2008-05-18 23:15:07
If you invest in foreign securities or other foreign investments, how do you do it? Up to this point I'm most familiar with ADRs (American Depository Receipts). This seems to be the most direct way for a North American to...

Oil was at $135.09...
2008-05-23 11:32:54
Seems the site I've been using is either slow, or I just don't see it when oil's at its high... Ah, this is why: CBC/AP reported that "in overnight trading, oil reached a new peak of $135.09, but prices came...

Oil Breaks $131!
2008-05-23 11:08:39
Oil is heading up, and, sure enough, the US dollar is down a bit too. Current USD-CDN exchange rate is 1 US Dollar = 0.98486 Canadian Dollar. Maybe I'll start keeping track of the US-Euro and US-pound exchanges too.

What is MoneyEnergy?
2008-05-22 19:18:04
First, from J.D. over at Get Rich Slowly: "I spent like a fool when I was younger because I didn’t know what I was doing with my life. Find a purpose." This statement really strikes the nail on the head....

Oil Breaks $130
2008-05-22 14:06:02
Oil-Price is a good source for real-time updates. Read an article yesterday about what it would be like if it took $132 to fill up your Honda Civic! I don't own a car, so it's all the better anyway. If...

Reinvest Dividends or Take Them in Cash?
2008-05-22 13:40:32
I’ve been reading some good posts like those at Living Off Dividends and Neville’s Financial Blog where people use their dividends as current monthly income – in fact, it’s starting to seem like more investors do this than use automatic...

The Benefits of Canadian ShareOwner
2008-05-22 00:21:07
Recently I spent quite a while searching for the right discount broker. I already had an account at one of the "Big 5" (in Canada, that's RY, TD, BMO, CM, BNS), but I was looking for a cheaper way to...

In increasing (or would that be decreasing?) order of the value of what I learned from them: 5. A Random Walk Down Wall Street (Burton G. Malkiel) Technically, I’m still reading this. It’s a bit of a dry read and...

Duck(s?) in Oil: Struggles of the Loonie and the Greenback
2008-05-27 13:21:06
The Financial Post reports that oil has fallen below $130 (it’s apparently at $129.97 as I write) and that because oil and commodities account for a reported 54% of Canada’s economy, the Canadian dollar is also down again for the...

Splogging my posts already?
2008-05-26 22:51:08
Googled my blog and found this interesting tidbit: some bot or scammer seems to have already "splogged" (is that the right term?:)) one of my posts . You can check it out here. At least they did link back to my...

2008-05-26 14:58:29
The countries of the Arctic are meeting this week to discuss how best to cut up the Arctic pie for oil drilling once global warming warms up enough so that the ice will be long-gone during summer months. Great. But...

2008-05-26 12:18:39
I never did this as an undergrad. I assumed it was illegal and unethical. The truth is, though, I never honestly questioned it or invest igated it. I knew of someone else who was investing his student loan, however. When I...

Is it Wrong to Sponsor Children in Africa?
2008-05-29 20:15:43
What do you think? My understanding is that some people might view the "sponsorship" of a child by someone in the West as yet another "colonial" kind of move on behalf of the "First World" interfering with the "Third World"...

Blog Set-Up Update
2008-05-29 14:55:58
Day Three of trying to get the new site up and running.  My time/date problem seems to be solved.  I still need a good way of changing font sizes within the same line.  AND: I need a good, simple GIF image creator and editor for MAC OSX 10.4. I don’t need an animator, just something where I [...]

Wordpress Road Bumps
2008-05-29 01:17:54
1. Where’s the central date function? Every post gets saved at a different date; I can’t even explain it; the dates don’t automatically update themselves and I can’t find the place to centrally set the date and time for all posts. Instead I find myself manually inputting dates, which I know can’t be [...]

A New Home for MoneyEnergy!
2008-05-28 03:32:50
I’ve decided to host my site using Bluehost and Wordpress design. So far Bluehost is fine; I couldn’t get the exact domain that I wanted - you can imagine what that domain is - it was on sale but the seller wouldn’t go below $800 US. So I skipped it. I like [...]

In increasing (or would that be decreasing?) order of the value of what I learned from them: 5. A Random Walk Down Wall Street (Burton G. Malkiel) Technically, I’m still reading this. Oil Breaks $130
2008-05-22 15:47:59
Oil-Price is a good source for real-time updates. Read an article yesterday about what it would be like if it took $132 to fill up your Honda Civic!  I don’t own a car, so it’s all the better anyway.  If I had the cash I’d buy a Yaris or Prius for sure. My own prediction is that [...]

Reinvest Dividends or Take Them in Cash?

I’ve been reading some good posts like those at Living Off Dividends and Neville’s Financial Blog where people use their dividends as current monthly income – in fact, it’s starting to seem like more investors do this than use automatic reinvestment plans. I’m wondering if I can collect some other opinions on this.  Not only do [...]
