Foto Friday
2007-06-29 12:48:00
We had to make an emergency trip to San Diego yesterday afternoon, so I'll have to delay Part Three of our vacation recap. In the meantime, here's this week's Foto Friday . It takes us to pre-Katrina New Orleans. Captured is a typical street in the French Quarter, featuring decorated iron-laced balconies. Grace and I spent several days there in April 2003. It was a great trip. We really enjoyed the food and the ambiance of the historic city. We took a cemetery tour, night time walking ghost tour, toured the Mississippi River in a riverboat and much more. We even witnessed a large and musical funeral procession through the French Quarter. I really enjoyed coffee and beignets each morning at Cafe Du Monde at the French Market at 800 Decatur Street. We look forward to going back someday. I wonder how much has changed as a result of Katrina. Photo by Jason RothRothfamilyadventures.com

Hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2007-07-05 11:29:00
I know...I know...I live in the desert and I shouldn't complain. But it's too hot for humans. Yesterday I thought I'd die just walking from the car to the door of the mall. It was a sweltering 115 F. It was so hot, we didn't go out to see any 4th of July fireworks. We stayed in and watched movies.Today, we're forecasted to tie or even surpass the record for the hottest day ever recorded in Las Vegas. That's 116 F. I'm kind of glad I'm working in my nice air-conditioned office today. Because of the heat, electrical transformers throughout the city have been failing and leaving hundreds of people without air conditioning in their homes. Could you imagine. Most have to go stay in hotels. I'm glad we're not one of those unfortunate people.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Enjoy Your Day
2007-07-04 12:20:00
Happy 4th of July! We don't have a lot planned today. It's supposed to be a scorching 115F today, so doing a lot of outside activities is out of the question. We are going to go see Bodies The Exhibit at the Tropicana and probably come home and cook hamburgers and hot dogs. We may go to Downtown Henderson for the fireworks later tonight. We'll see.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Coincidence or Curse
2007-07-03 21:38:00
Six years ago TODAY I got in a car accident that virtually destroyed the front end of my truck. In that particular accident, I was leaving Gold's Gym and driving down the center lane of the parking lot when a car came flying around the corner and slammed into me. The female driver hit me so hard that I spun around. It was so hard that I flew sideways out of my seat belt. You would of thought that my five-year-old truck would be totalled, but it got fixed by the insurance company and was as good as new.My point....in some kind of weird coincidence or curse...TODAY, while driving home from work, I hit a tractor trailer and destroyed the entire passenger side of my vehicle. The passenger door was even torn completely off. Don't worry, I wasn't injured. The road I was on has a speed limit of 65 MPH, which I was obeying. In fact, I think I was going a bit slower than that because my right turn was coming up. The huge tractor trailer was off on the shoulder, but partially blocking my lane

Zane's New Words
2007-07-03 12:48:00
I thought I'd take a moment to list a few new words to emerge recently from Zane's expanding vocabulary. He's now pretty much repeating everything he hears (we have to be very careful). However, he knows the meaning of these words and uses them appropriately. Here they are:Elmo (Melmo)Bath (Bass)Lola (lolola) - Our dogPoo-Poo - He says it after he does the deedNight-Night (Ni-Ni)HorsieKittyGoThis post is mainly due to the fact that I'm avoiding actually doing real work here at my work desk.Rothfamilyadventures.com

They Try To Make Me Go To Rehab...
2007-07-03 09:56:00
I have one particular vice that I'm trying to kick. In fact, I felt the urge to indulge myself this morning, but with every ounce of will in my body I was able to resist the temptation. What is this vice I'm talking about? It's not drugs or alcohol. I'm embarrassed to say that it's Starbucks. Yep, I'm a caramel macchiato junkie. It's so hard to resist when I past literally five Starbucks locations on my short drive to work. In fact, down the street from our house there are two, right across the street from each other. Add the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and It's A Grind locations and I'm screwed. You may be wondering, why so many coffee houses in Las Vegas? It's hotter than hell (115 F today), why are you drinking coffee? Well, I don't know why. Obviously there are a bunch of fools like me that get addicted to their delicious coffee drinks. But I will tell you that when it's super hot outside, a caramel or java chip frappacino sure taste good. And the hot coffee drinks are gre

Growth Spurt
2007-07-09 13:12:00
Gosh our little man is growing fast. And his growth seems to have accelerated during the past couple of weeks. All of the sudden he's taller than the kitchen table. Before we left for vacation three weeks ago, he wasn't. He seems to be getting taller and thinner. His feet, which were always big, barely fit in his size four shoes. We had to buy a bigger size yesterday at the mall.In another new and amazing development, at 15-months-old, Zane is starting to put words together to form phrases. His first phrase (actually, it's a question) is "what's this?" It's funny...he seems to be using the word "this" a lot. It's his word for things that he doesn't know or for things that he forgets what the correct word is.I also posted the other day about Zane prompting us to take him to go ni-ni (night-night). He did it again last night. With him pulling me by the finger, I followed him upstairs to our bed last night at around 9 p.m. and he was asleep within minutes. I've noticed that he's

New Car Photo
2007-07-08 12:32:00
Grace had the car, and the camera, so I didn't get a high-quality photo of the new vehicle yet. But below is a low-res and off-center camera phone photo. On our agenda today...Grace is working to Zane and I will be spending some quality father-son time together. We may go to the Henderson pool, but we'll see. I know we're not going to stay at home though.Rothfamilyadventures.com

New Car
2007-07-06 21:51:00
This afternoon we got a new car. Actually it's an SUV. I know..I know...not exactly environmentally friendly, but it's not a super huge SUV. It's a Toyota Highlander. We got a repo through our credit union, so we didn't have to pay any sales taxes. It's a Limited edition with leather and a V6 engine. It's a metallic light blue as well. Grace loves it. She's been bitching about the challenges of loading Zane into the car seat in our Honda Civic ever since we got it in October. She definitely can't complain now. I'll post a pic tomorrow.Rothfamilyadventures.com

This week we go back to Mexico for a shot from our hotel balcony at a passing cruise ship. With the stress of trying to sell our Arizona house, having to buy a new car, etc., I wish to be sitting poolside on a luxury liner while drinking some refreshing margaritas.Photo by Jason RothI'm hoping my next Foto Friday will feature an amazing photo from our trips to Sedona. Ni-Ni
2007-07-06 09:49:00
As I mentioned a few posts ago, Zane has been picking up a lot of new words...and actually using them correctly. He's quite a smart 15-month-old. Last night he surprised us when at about 9 p.m., with his sippy cup in hand, he came up to me and put his head on my shoulder and said ni-ni. This is night-night to him. I was baffled. Did he really want to go to bed? Apparently he did. I took him upstairs and laid down with him. He was asleep in about 15 to 20 minutes. Wow.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Foto Friday

Grace and I will celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary in December. As the milestone fast approaches, I thought I'd post a photo of what we used to look like before marriage and becoming parents. This photo was taken during a trip to San Francisco in 2003. While Grace looks as beautiful as ever, I've changed significantly. Most notably is the weight loss. I know...most get married, have kids and gain weight. My situation is quite the opposite. I actually grew up as a skinny kid. I hated hit. Everyone was bigger than me. So right after high school, I decided to make a change. For years I was dedicated in hitting the gym at least four days a week. In doing so, I became quite "ripped," for a lack of a better term. Now with all of the family responsibilities, working out consistently is a thing of the past. As a result, mostly since Zane was born, I've lost more than 30 lbs. (compare photos). Five years ago it would have bothered me. But today it doesn't. Although I do miss by bulgin

Getting Paid To Pee
2007-07-12 11:42:00
Somebody is being very generous. If it could only happen here. Apparently money and well wishes have been turning up in toilet stalls in public men's restrooms (what about the women?) throughout Japan over the past couple of weeks (news story here). According to the AP report, each package of 10,000-yen bills, some wrapped in traditional Japanese washi paper, was accompanied by handwritten letters that read "Please make use of this money for your self-enrichment," and "One per person."More than two million Yen worth have been found.Rothfamilyadventures.com

When The Cat and Kitten Are Away...
2007-07-12 10:08:00
The mouse will SLEEP. I dropped Grace and Zane off to the airport yesterday. They're in San Diego until Saturday. I already miss them greatly as I'm not used to not having them around. But with my two favorite people out of town, I did get a great, uninterrupted sleep last night, which hasn't happened in quite some time. I'm looking forward to it again tonight. I know...super exciting life, but all of our readers with toddlers understand. It's amazing that after having a kid sleep becomes a thing of the past. On occasion Zane sleeps through the night. I think he did twice last week. Usually he wakes up at around 4 or 5 a.m., but goes back to sleep either in his bed or ours. When he does sleep through the night, however, he wakes up super early, which means Mommy and/or Daddy wakes up super early, which is almost just as bad and especially during the weekend.Last week Grace's cousins were visiting us from Sacramento and for the entire week her 19-year-old, college student cousin we

San Diego Photos
2007-07-10 20:27:00
I know I'm very late in posting them, but below are our photos from our trip to San Diego the weekend before last. We ended up taking a SEAL tour of the bay, even though we used to live there, so we really had no reason to take the tour. We just thought it would be fun. The SEAL tour is an amphibious bus that turns into a boat. It's really cool. Also, here's a pic of Zane on his first bike. Yep...he got a bike. His feet don't quite reach the pedals, but he likes being pushed around on it for now. He's growing so fast, he'll be pedalling it himself soon.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Must. Stop. Pounding.
2007-07-16 10:58:00
This morning I woke up with the worst migraine headache I've had in months. My head feels like someone is stomping on it. I don't know what caused it. Was is something I ate? Actually, last night I had just a dull headache, which was a little odd. Although I'm prone to getting headaches, surprisingly I haven't had one in a long time. Despite the pain, it felt like nothing too serious. In fact, I didn't take anything for it. I just went to bed with the hope that it would be gone this morning. Boy was I wrong. Zane woke up screaming at about 4:30 a.m. As I was awoken and I opened my eyes, my head was in such excruciating pain. I actually felt like I'd vomit. I had a hard time going back to sleep. Now I'm at work, with my aching head. I took some super-duper headache medicine, but it doesn't seem to be doing any good yet. I may have to try some coffee. Sometimes caffeine works.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Simpsons Movie Marketing
2007-07-15 12:38:00
Yesterday we saw one of the 7-Eleven stores that was transformed into Kwik-E-Mart to promote the Simpsons movie, which is coming out later this month. It was actually really cool. And obviously whoever came up with the idea is a genious. The store was packed. They turned slurpees into squishies and they were selling Homer's donuts, Buzz soda and a bunch of other Simpsons products. The parking lot was filled with families taking photographs in front of the newly decorated building. We didn't have our camera, so we captured a couple of photos on the trusty camera phone. Godspeed Old Truck
2007-07-18 13:24:00
Today I bid farewell to my trusty 1996 Toyota Tacoma. I bought it used during my final month of college back in 1998. It had about 21,000 miles on the odometer when I made the purchase. When I crashed it a couple of weeks ago it had about 163,000 miles.I have a lot of great memories of driving that truck. It took me back and forth between Vegas and SoCal more times than I can count. And when Grace and I spent two and a half years in Phoenix it safely got me to and from work during my horrendous daily commute of at least one hour each way. It never really had any major mechanical issues. Normal maintenance kept it going for me for nearly a decade. The best part was its amazing air-conditioner. Despite the intense desert heat in both Vegas and Phoenix, the air-conditioner never stopped pumping super cold air. The severely damaged truck has been parked across the street from the house since the accident. This morning a tow truck from the salvage place I made arrangements with came and pic

Zane's New Words
2007-07-18 12:58:00
Zane continues to amaze us with his expanding vocabulary. Some of his new words are:Otter (Ottew) - From his book of ocean babies.Grandpa (Gandpa)Grandma (Gandma)CookieMouth - Put's his hand on his mouth.Butt - Pats his bottom.Pee-Pee - This has two meanings. Actual peeing and his...well...you know.Thankfully he hasn't said any bad words yet. We're quite sure he's heard quite a few. We were watching an episode of Miami Ink last night where Yogi (Japanese guy) and his wife were trying to teach their daughter to talk and all she really kept saying was "oh shit." It was funny. But it could be quite embarrasing also.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Just Tired
2007-07-17 13:56:00
Gone today is the cranial pain I experienced yesterday morning. Instead, I'm super tired. You see, last night I took Excedrin Migraine to deal with the headache from hell. One of the main ingredients in Excedrin Migraine is caffeine. So, of course, I was super tired last night, but I could not sleep. I tossed and turned quite a bit. You may be wondering, "why did you take a medicine with caffeine if you knew it might keep you up?" Well, I really didn't want to take it, but when I have a headache that bad, it's the only thing that works. So it's either a night of crappy sleep or excruciating pain. The choice is obvious.Unfortunately, this morning I had to get up really early to be at one of the local television stations by 7 a.m. As director of marketing/PR I had to supervise an appearance of one of our students. It went well, but it was too early after a night of not sleeping. To make matters worse, I have an event committee meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. I'm not looking forward to

The DMV
2007-07-21 11:11:00
This morning I spent a little more than an hour at the wonderful DMV to register our new Highlander. Actually, it wasn't as bad as some of my past experiences. When I arrived at 15 minutes before 8 a.m. there was a line wrapped around the building. CRAP. I knew I should of woke up and arrived earlier. Once inside, I got my number, G262, and they were on G211. That doesn't count all the H, I and D numbers they also cycle through. Fortunately, they had people working pretty much all 30 windows, so it didn't take too long. It was also early still so the DMV workers were'nt taking their notorious cigarette breaks yet.As I sat there patiently waiting for my number to be called, I found it interesting the different people waiting along with me. There were the people that got up, took a shower and were all dressed up for the day. There were the people you could tell just rolled out of bed and threw something, anything, on. Some were even in what looked like pajamas. There were the gangsta

Beckhamania
2007-07-20 10:56:00
CARL DE SOUZA / AFP/Getty Images I don't get the big hoopla over the Beckhams coming to America. I doubt if most Americans even care. Let's face it, Soccer isn't any big deal in this country (unless you're Latino or in elementary school) and the Spice Girls are so 1990s. Apparently its all media hype. Posh's reality show on NBC is tanking in the ratings and David has been here less than two weeks and he already has an ankle injury. I wonder how long the hype will last...tick, tock...Rothfamilyadventures.com

Foto Friday
2007-07-20 09:00:00
This week's Foto Friday takes us to Sedona, Arizona. Before Zane was born, while living in the Phoenix area, Grace and I took several trips up north to visit the quaint town set among the famous red cliffs at the base of the Mogollon Rim. I have hundreds of photos of the majestic landscape of the area in my collection. This photo was taken during a jeep tour of the Broken Arrow Trail. The trail was named after the 1950s movie Broken Arrow starring James Stewart. The movie was filmed on the trail. The last time we went to Sedona, which was well over a year ago, the Broken Arrow trail was closed to tours. Apparently it has gotten way too crowded and the traffic was treatening the plant and wild life.Photo by Jason RothRothfamilyadventures.com

Oh Crap...
2007-07-23 18:04:00
Starbucks announced today that it's raising prices (see news) on its fresh coffee drinks. In these tough times you'd think they'd at least give us a break on our coffee. Higher prices for gasoline, milk, electricity, natural gas, etc. Let's just keep the economic turmoil going a little longer. Like it's not hard enough making it these days, now our sacred coffee has fallen victim. Good thing I've cut back. I will admit that I had a grande white chocolate mocha today, but that's because this chick from accounting had an extra one and asked if I wanted it. I'm not one to turn down the offer. And it was free.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Eewww
2007-07-23 10:15:00
Zane started saying something funny this weekend. Whenever he thought something was gross, he'd say "eeeewwww." This applied to wiping his runny nose, cleaning his poopy diaper and food he doesn't want or like. Changing his diaper was particularly funny. "Poo-poo eeewww" he'd say over and over again. In other news, Zane brought home a cold from school late last week and unintentionally shared his misery with Mommy and Daddy. Both Grace and I have a brutal sinus cold that started on Saturday. Now I'm at work and I feel like my head's in the clouds. Not fun. Also, it's going to rain!!!! It hasn't rained in Vegas in what seems like forever. We got some monsoon action today and for the next few days. It's so exciting. The relentless sunshine can be exhausting. It's nice to see some grey clouds. Only problem with it is the fact that it's still going to be about 100 F, but super humid. It's a tradeoff. Finally, just five days until the premiere of the Simpsons movie. Can't wait. Of

Done With Daycare
2007-07-25 09:59:00
Zane got sick again last week, just a week after returning to school after a month off for vacation. During that month off he was never sick, even after traveling on eight airplanes. So obviously his school is a cesspool of disease. This time he got Grace and me sick. We both have been suffering from a sinus thing since the weekend. Mine was really bad on Monday. Zane was starting to get better over the weekend, but took a turn on Monday night. He woke up in the middle of the night with a very high fever. I ended up staying home with him yesterday. A trip to the doctor in the afternoon confirmed a double ear infection for like the sixth time and even with tubes in his ears. So he's on antibiotics again. He still has the fever this morning. With him getting sick all the time, we're really rethinking the school situation. Grace is going to try to get her schedule changed so we can avoid sending him. We're also looking into some private daycare options. Hopefully we'll solve the problem

Tragedy
2007-07-27 17:02:00
As a former public relations practitioner in Phoenix I was shocked and saddened by the news today of the collision and crash of the KTVK-TV (AZFamily) and KNXV-TV (ABC) news helicopters while covering a high speed pursuit through Downtown. Four people died in the crash, the pilot of each helicopter and a photojournalist in each. During the lunch hour, the helicopters crashed and exploded on the ground in Indian Steele Park, about a block north of my old office. It's a very rare a occurance when media outlets themselves become the focus of such horrific media coverage. Our condolences to the families of the victims.* Photos by La Voz (Spanish Newspaper) and KPHO-TV (CBS-Phoenix)Rothfamilyadventures.com
