Backyard Fun
2007-05-26 16:28:00
It's hot outside, so we decided to pick up a small plastic pool and a couple packages of balls for Zane to play with in the backyard this afternoon. For the first time, we started with him in the pool with just the balls. Later we added water. He wasn't into it at first, but I think it was because the water was very cold compared to the 100F air. After a few minutes though, he went wild. Below are some pics of the fun. We also captured some of the action on video. It features Zane playing in the water and calling for his Grandma to come play with him.Backyard FunRothfamilyadventures.com

Sleep...Finally/Stuntman
2007-05-24 10:39:00
The past few nights have been frustrating. Zane kept waking up several times in the middle of the night screaming his head off and requiring our attention. It always happens after a vacation or disruption of his routine. Finally , last night he slept through the entire night. It was great for all of us, especially Grace since she's not feeling well. And as an added bonus, because of his great night of sleep, he was in a great mood this morning. Oh yeah, he may have said another new word this morning. As we were getting out of the car in front of his school, he pointed at the building and said "skew."-------------------------------------Zane is suddenly being very, very brave. First he was climbing up and standing on top of his little car. Last night he started jumping off of it. Thank god for medical insurance. I think we're definitely going to need it.Rothfamilyadventures.com

The Faux-Hawk
2007-05-29 21:49:00
The holiday weekend was a busy one. Besides the movies on the Green at the District, Zane and I went to two BBQs. It was great visiting Nancy and Mike on Sunday after a number of years. They are doing very well as they prepare for their little boy. They are expecting in mid-August. Zane gave them a good glimpse of what life will be like with a toddler. On Monday, while Grace was at work, Zane and I went to the home of Catherine's parents for a BBQ. We also watched Pirates of the Caribbean II on DVD. Zane was very well behaved during both visits.Zane also got his second haircut this weekend. Check out the new faux-hawk. I also threw a pic of Lola in the mix. It's been a while.ZaneRothfamilyadventures.com

The Plan
2007-05-31 18:17:00
This is kind of funny. Perhaps it would be a great platform for a run for the White House. By the way, his shirt says "I Love New York" in Arabic.Robin Williams:I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan.1)The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those "good ole boys", we will never "interfere" again. 2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany, South Korea and the Middle East. They don't want us there, anyway. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence. 3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welc

Zane's New Words

Zane is saying some new words this week:Banana (he says nanana)Orca (he learned it from his book "Ocean Babies")Bug (from his book "Baby Animals")No! (We were hoping it would be a while until he said this, but he hears it so much I was beginning to wonder how he hadn't said it earlier)Rothfamilyadventures.com

We're Back
2007-06-03 13:54:00
We returned from Phoenix late yesterday afternoon. It was a very quick trip. We just wanted to check in on our home. It's still on the market and hasn't sold. We just had to lower the price again. If it doesn't sell by September, we're going to rent it out until the market improves. We'll see.One of the reasons for our trip was to make sure everything is presentable. As you can imagine, when nobody is living in a house, it tends to get a bit dusty. Actually, it was very dusty. Saturday morning we spent our time cleaning. Later, Grace had a hair appointment with her favorite stylist. She got her hair cut short, after months with longer hair. She had short hair when we met and I've always liked the style on her. She looks beautiful with short hair. She also admits that it's easier to manage. Perhaps she'll pose for a picture so you all can see the new do.After the hair appointment we went to Ikea and had swedish meatballs for lunch and afterwards browsed the new line of furniture

Foto Friday
2007-06-08 10:49:00
I decided to create a new feature on our family blog. It's Foto Friday . I know what you're thinking...I already post a lot of photos. But Foto Friday will be different. It will feature random photos from our extensive collection of thousands of digital photos of people, places and things. I may occasionally showcase an intriguing photo from another source. For our first Foto Friday, below is a picture taken way back in 2003 (before Zane), when Grace and I used to take frequent weekend trips to San Francisco. On this day we decided to take a boat ride in the Bay. As we approached the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge, I snapped this photo.Photo by Jason Roth, May 2003Rothfamilyadventures.com

Damned Bank Fees
2007-06-06 14:39:00
I'm not chronically overdrawn on my checking account. In fact, I can't remember the last time I went into the negative with my balance. But I had a bit of a "brain fart" last week and accidentally transferred a large sum of money out of my checking account and into another account. For some reason I didn't think I needed it hanging out in the checking account. Unfortunately, I forgot that I had written (or perhaps "submitted" is a more appropriate term) an online check to pay off a bill. Needless to say, my checking account was overdrawn by more than $3,000 for an entire day. Meanwhile, I was using my debit card left and right. The only reason I found out was while waiting to get in the buffet at Green Valley Ranch on Saturday night, I tried to get some cash from the ATM and it said I had insufficient funds. That evening I logged into my online banking and low and behold, I was racking up some hefty penalties for my negative balance. The result was more than $100 in overdraft fees, w

Weekend Update
2007-06-10 19:02:00
The weekend has been fun so far. We went to the District at Green Valley Ranch for the outdoor movie on the Green on Friday evening. The feature was Shark Tale, featuring the voices of Will Smith and Renee Zellweger. It was my first time seeing it. It was pretty funny. Zane did good, despite the fact that the movie started later than the previous weekends. It's because it now gets darker later. We ended up having to leave about 15 minutes before the movie ended. Saturday was a busy day. It started with brunch at the Pancake House and a walk around the District. It also included some shopping and a birthday party at Jen and Rico's house for all of the June babies in Grace's mommies group. Zane had a blast playing with all of his little friends. BTW, what is with toddlers loving to play on stairs? A great deal of time at the party was spent supervising a mob of kids going up and down the stairs. Today, while Grace was at work, Zane and I went swimming at the Henderson Multigeneration

This week's installment of Foto Friday takes us to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Grace and I went there in January 2004 for a post-Holiday vacation. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort in the Marina Vallarta district and had fun swimming, eating and visiting the Malecon in downtown. The Malecon (Spanish for boardwalk) is famed for its bronze statues scattered from one end to the other. Below is a picture of one very tall statue located at the north end of the Malecon.Photo by Jason RothRothfamilyadventures.com

A big congratulations to our friend's Nancy and Mike on the birth of their first son, Roman Vincent. He was born early (31 weeks) the Friday before last. Despite his early arrival, he's healthy and strong and doing very well. We can't wait to see him in person once he leaves the hospital. Below are some pics.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Island Boy/Straw Sucker
2007-06-13 10:56:00
Zane is obviously half Pacific Island er. He absolutely loves mangoes, bananas and even fish. I didn't start eating seafood until I went away for college. I think it's because I never had it while growing up, because nobody in my family likes it at all. Zane probably will be much more open to different foods because of his early exposure. Grace eats anything and everything and she doesn't want Zane to be a picky eater. In other news, something amazing happened last night while eating dinner at Jason's Deli (the best) in Henderson. Zane finally drank from a straw! You may think, who cares. But we've been trying for months to get him to suck through a straw. I guess he finally figured it out. Now we won't have to worry if we forget his sippy cup when we're out and about. We can just give him a drink with a straw.Rothfamilyadventures.com

The Summer Duldrum
2007-06-12 10:34:00
Now that summer is here and work is kind of slow, I'm eager to go on a fun family vacation. I just want to pack up Grace and Zane and take off to exotic lands and absorb different cultures and food and not think about home and work. It's not like I'm bored at work. I have plenty to do and I enjoy my work, but I keep hearing about other people's vacations to Europe and Asia and it makes me so incredibly jealous. I also find myself reading other people's online travel blogs and it gets me thinking about all of the interesting places I'd like to visit, if I had the time and money. And if Grace would be willing to go. All this thinking has motivated me to get prepared for any spontaneous international travel. Last Friday I printed out a passport application for Zane. We need to get him one soon, especially since the U.S. State Department is backlogged and it's taking a long time to get passports processed. It'll be good to be prepared. Perhaps we can go somewhere international durin

The World's Most Expensive Cities
2007-06-18 11:41:00
Posted on CNN.com, I thought the list of the "World 's Most Expensive Cities 2007" was interesting. Did you know it cost $6.30 for a newspaper in Moscow? Also notice that only NYC at No. 15 made the top 20 list. Los Angeles fell to 42nd from 29th place a year ago. San Francisco came in at No. 54, down 20 places from a year earlier.World's most expensive cities 20071. Moscow2. London3. Seoul4. Tokyo5. Hong Kong6. Copenhagen7. Geneva8. Osaka9. Zurich10. Oslo11. Just Get Up And Go Already!
2007-06-17 12:45:00
I used to be so dedicated. I went to the gym four to five days a week for several years. Then Zane came along and my routine got all screwed up. I haven't been in months and I feel like crap. Unlike most folks, I haven't gained any weight since I stopped. I've actually lost about 20 pounds. I feel like a toothpick again. So with Zane and Grace out of town, you'd think it would be easy for me to get up a go to the gym. I don't feel like it. I think it's the heat. The past few days it's been between 105F and 108F. Today's supposed to be the same.I think I will go anyways. It's right up the street. I have nothing better to do today. I'll let you know if I make it.-----------------------------------------1:07 p.m. Update - I went and I feel good.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Where Are Their Parents?
2007-06-15 10:50:00
Las Vegas has always had more crime than most cities in the U.S. There's no way to avoid it when you have a dense population approaching two million and hundreds of thousands of tourists roaming the city on any given day. But what's been happening in the newer southwest portion of the Las Vegas Valley is quite disturbing (BTW, we live in the southeast part of the Valley). It's been the focus lately on the television news as well as in the newspaper. Packs of 12 to 20-year-olds (yep...12-year-olds) have been terrorizing the community, committing burglaries, armed robberies, carjackings and vicious assaults on innocent residents. Here's the kicker...these teens aren't underprivileged. They are from well-off families. According to the newspaper, many live in affluent gated communities. They are apparently doing this for the sport of it. Even scarier is the fact that three of them were arrested recently and had automatic weapons. WTF?This begs the question -- where the hell are these k

Not Quite There Yet
2007-06-20 16:18:00
We're still home in Vegas today. To make a long story short, flight delays and cancellations prevented us from traveling to North Carolina last night. It was frustrating and quite tiring. We were at the airport until past midnight. We decided to book on the flight tonight and head home for some rest. Hopefully it'll work out better for us tonight.Rothfamilyadventures.com

You're Kidding, Right?
2007-06-19 13:53:00
I wasn't planning on posting again today, but a headline from the Associated Press just captured my attention. The Vatican has just released the "Ten Commandments For Drivers." I think it's rather hilarious. What's next, the "Ten Commandments of Mobile Phone Use" or the "Ten Commandments of Web Surfing." They actually had a press conference for this. I'm not kidding. If you don't believe me, here is the article on CNN.com.For all of you wreckless drivers out there, here are your commandments:1. You shall not kill.2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.7. Support the families

Leaving On A Jet Plane....
2007-06-19 13:17:00
Our vacation begins tonight. FINALLY! Barring no delays, we'll be on the red-eye flight to Charlotte, NC late tonight. We have a connection to New Bern at 7:30 a.m. We decided on the overnight flight because of Zane. Grace is very nervous about taking a long flight with him. I'm not as worried. Hopefully he'll sleep. I think he will. Based on my past flying experience, red-eye flights are generally very quite and dark, with most people snoozing away. Unless, of course, Zane is screaming. Then nobody will be sleeping. We're bringing his car seat on the plane because he actually does better when he's strapped into the seat. We're keeping our fingers crossed. During our week-long trip I'll try to post some updates with photos. However, it definitely won't be everyday. IT'S A VACATION!Rothfamilyadventures.com

Quick Update
2007-06-24 17:41:00
We left North Carolina early this morning. We're now in beautiful Charleston, S.C. It's been a busy few days so far. We went boating on the Nuese and Trent Rivers in New Bern, N.C., spent time with family and toured historic downtown. Already in Charleston, we've been on a carriage tour, visited the South Carolina Aquarium (Zane loved it) and ate dinner at a seafood restaurant on Market Street, near the Slave Market. I'll do a full update soon, with photos.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Vacation Recap and Photos - Part Two (Charleston)
2007-06-28 12:44:00
The second half of our vacation was spent in beautiful Charleston , S.C. We stayed at my Dad's new house in Goose Creek, just outside of Charleston. We took an early morning flight and arrived in the city in the morning, so we decided to venture downtown around lunchtime. We ate at a seafood restaurant on Market Street. It was very good. Grace had grouper for the first time. And my dad had calamari for the first time. He didn't know that it was squid until after he had his first bite. Zane was in a shitty mood at the restaurant. It was hot, sticky and he was tired. We also went on a carriage tour of the Downtown area. It was pretty good. Zane didn't behave very well, which made taking photos rather difficult. We learned a lot of historical facts on the tour though. The best part of the day, probably because of the air conditioning inside the complex, was our trip to the South Carolina Aquarium. Zane loved it. He was running around to each tank and was so excited to see the fish.On day

Vacation Recap and Photos - Part One (New Bern)
2007-06-27 17:48:00
We're back from our vacation to the South. It was a lot of fun, but also very exhausting because of the traveling. In one week we took six flights. Luckily Zane did very well on all of them. We started our adventure in New Bern, N.C. Below are some pictures from our visit with family. Zane had a lot of fun playing with his cousins, Kyle and Christopher. He loved the big, grassy open backyard and was obsessed with going outside, even though it was a little hot and humid. I don't have any pictures from our boating adventure (forgot the camera). Hopefully my Mom will get me some to post. We saw lots of turtles on the Trent River and some amazing homes that line the shore. We also had the opportunity to tour historic Downtown New Bern. The city was founded in 1710 and was, at one time, the Colonial Capital of the North Carolina Colony. It's very quaint, with a lot of very old and important sites, including Tryon Palace (featured in the photos). It's also where Pepsi was invented more th

Vacation Recap and Photos - Part Three (Savannah)
2007-07-01 14:13:00
Part three of our vacation recap takes us to Savannah , G.A. It was our first time visiting the city. Unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of time to explore. We mostly toured River and Bay Streets, down by the river. We really, really liked Savannah a lot. Although pushing a stroller around on the cobblestone River Street wasn't easy. A few times I had to carry the stroller with Zane in it.We had lunch at a New Orleans restaurant on River Street. The food was good. Zane through his cup at a mad sitting at the table across from us. I was embarrassed, but the man played along with Zane like it was no big deal.I also got my very first parking ticket ever in Savannah. We were about 15 minutes late getting back to the car, which was parked at a meter. The ticket is only $10. Here's some pics from the trip.Rothfamilyadventures.com
