Hot!
2007-03-14 14:50:00
It's only March, but it's already hot. Yesterday we hit 90 F, which broke a record for the hottest temperature recorded on the day and the earliest we've ever hit 90 F. I'm not ready for summer yet. It's not even spring yet.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Goodbye Stardust
2007-03-13 16:01:00
Early this morning Las Vegas bid farewell to the legendary Stardust Hotel & Casino with a spectacular, theatrical implosion. Click here to see a video from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.While it's sad to see our historic landmarks pulverized into dust, Las Vegas is a city of reinvention. We're always building something bigger and better. In fact, I've lived in Vegas off and on for more than a decade now and I've seen some dramatic changes. Old hotels and resorts fallen and replaced with luxurious and flamboyant mega resorts that provide residents and visitors the best hotels, gaming, restaurants and shopping on the planet. The now-history Stardust will be replaced by Echelon, a $4 billion mega resort.Currently, Las Vegas is going through one of its most amazing transformations, with construction all over the place. CityCenter, being built adjacent to Bellagio by MGM Mirage with a price tag of $8 billion, is the largest privately funded construction project in U.S. history. It's

Lazy Day
2007-03-19 05:09:00
Today Zane wasn't in the best of moods. He's on the tail end of a cold and his top teeth are getting ready to break through. His poor gums are swallen. We were planning to go out today, but decided to just spend a lazy day at home watching NCAA basketball. It was another beautiful day, so Grandma took Zane to the back yard for a ride on the swing. As you can see he enjoyed himself. In fact, it was so relaxing, he ended up taking two seperate 30 minute naps in the swing. Here are some pics.Rothfamilyadventures.com

How Sweet It Is

New Teeth
2007-03-21 04:12:00
Zane is finally getting two more teeth. Specifically, his first two top teeth cut through today. While it's a great milestone, the poor little guy is miserable. I feel sorry for him. We're using Orajel numbing medication, which doesn't last very long. We got some teething tablets this evening. Hopefully that will do the trick. At least it's happening this week and he'll probably be better by his First Birthday Party on Saturday, March 31.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Food Danger
2007-03-24 00:04:00
This pet food recall is scary. Sixteen cats and dogs have died so far and the news is saying that the number of victims may end up in the hundreds or maybe even the thousands. I was a little freaked out when Lola's brand of dog food was mentioned on the news to be one of almost all brands to be contaminated. Luckily she doesn't eat any of the particular kinds on the list, which was mostly the canned, wet kind. Lola eats just the plain dry dog food.It turns out that rat poison may be the culprit. The question now is how the hell does something like this happen? I feel so sorry for the families that have lost their beloved pets. There are going to be a lot of lawsuits.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Fingers Crossed
2007-03-23 16:43:00
Tonight the UNLV Runnin' Rebels take on the Oregon Quacks...I mean Ducks...in St. Louis. The teams are very similar so it should be a great match-up. We're praying for a victory! It's amazing how the team's performance in the NCAA tournament has stirred excitement in Vegas. America's happiest mayor, Oscar Goodman, proclaimed today Rebel Red Day (that's why this post is in red) and there are events and celebrations happening throughout the community. Let's just hope we're not setting ourselves up for disappointment.Rothfamilyadventures.com

An Ending
2007-03-24 20:35:00
Las Vegas saw its NCAA run end last night as the Runnin' Rebels were defeated by the Oregon Ducks. It's unfortunate, but everyone new it was going to be a huge challenge. They had a good run in the tournament this year. We'll look forward to next year.--------------------------Last night we went to DJ and Ashley's (thanks to both of you) home for dinner. We had a lot of fun hanging out, drinking wine and watching Zane's reaction to their dog, Cuervo. Zane had a lot of fun. later we all went to the Bernardo's home for a family and friends shindig. We weren't able to stay too long, but it was fun.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Another Video
2007-03-28 04:02:00
Here's another video captured tonight. Zane's walking is improving everyday. He's now almost exclusively walking, which has us paranoid. He hit his head on the tile floor last night and we keep having to follow him everywhere so he won't hit his head on grandma's glass coffee table. He also won't stay off the stairs.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Weekend Fun
2007-03-27 05:20:00
Zane was full of energy this weekend...as usual.Among his new mischief, he likes to fake sleep with a little smirk on his face. He also now says "uh oh" and he's walking a lot now. I would say about 60 percent of the time. Here's a photo Zane reading his favorite book. It's about baby sea animals. Here's Zane at In N Out Burger. All of you that haven't had it, you're missing out on the best burgers in the world. He's not smiling because he's eagerly waiting for his fries.Of course, the weekend, or any night, would not be complete without Zane antagonizing Lola. And now for the video of Zane acting like his humorous self.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Happy Birthday Zane
2007-03-29 17:03:00
Happy 1st Birthday Zane! The day is here. Man has time flown by. It seems like only yesterday we were eagerly anticipating Zane's arrival and now we're celebrating his first birthday. This past year has been absolutely incredible. It was filled with so much joy, as well as challenges, and we wouldn't trade it for anything. As we begin the birthday celebrations, Zane is sick again. He had a fever last night and was vomiting. We hope he starts to feel better today or at least by Saturday for his party. It sucks to be sick on your birthday.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Birthday Recap
2007-04-02 04:52:00
Saturday was a great day for a park party to celebrate Zane's first birthday. It almost didn't happen. Zane came down with the stomache flu on Wednesday....and once again, he gave it to me. I was vomiting Friday night and wasn't feeling well for party, but we went through with it. It actually turned out nice. The weather was about 82 F with a slight breeze. It was perfect.Thank you to all who gave him gifts. He, and we, really appreciate it. Here are some pictures from the party. New People/School Challenges
2007-04-06 16:57:00
In an effort to expand her (our) friend base and provide opportunities for Zane to play with other children his age, Grace joined a local Mommies group on MeetUp. She's been to a couple of their events and, so far, likes everyone she's met. She's very enthusiastic about all of the events they plan each week, which includes park playdates, dinners, etc.Last night I had the opportunity to meet a few of the members, as well as their husbands and children, at a dinner at I Love Sushi (funny name...it's a restaurant). Like Grace, I thought everyone was great.Zane had a pretty good time too. He actually made quite a mess, first with a plate of wet, mushy tofu and then with a cucumber wrapped crab roll. He as squishing it in his hands and spreading it all over the table. But he also surprised us by eating the crab roll. He actually liked it.---------------------In other news...we got a note from Zane's school on Friday. As everyone knows, he turned one last week. Once children reach that

Zane's First Haircut
2007-04-07 06:01:00
Zane got his very first haircut this afternoon. He's got a stylish new do, short enough to spike up now. It was getting way too long. Here's some of the after picks. Our visit to the hair place was spontaneous, so we didn't have the camera. So no photos of the actual haircut.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Happy Easter!
2007-04-08 17:36:00
Happy Easter everyone. Our Easter is going to be very low-key. Grace has to work. Zane and I will probably just hang out and possibly go to the park. It's supposed to be a beautiful day.Yesterday we went to the District and Green Valley Ranch for their Easter celebration. It included the Easter Bunny. It was Zane's first visit to the icon, so we didn't know what to expect. We waited in line and finally got to the front. From there Zane seemed fine. He was a bit curious about the big furry animal. But when it came time to get up close for the picture, he freaked. He was pushing the Easter Bunny away. It was kind of funny. Here's some photos from the day's event. The crowd.Zane's a "big boy" now, so he likes to push his stroller himself.Waiting patiently in line.Oh, hell no.Exploring.Rothfamilyadventures.com

Heading North
2007-04-11 00:13:00
Tomorrow I head to Carson City, the state capital, for a Legislative Luncheon being held at the capitol building. It's my first trip to North ern Nevada, so I don't know what to expect. I have learned from others during the past few days that the Northerners of our state dislike us Southerners. Apparently it has to do with politics.Northern Nevada has long maintained control of key positions in the state government even while the population of the Las Vegas area in Southern Nevada is larger than the rest of the state. As one might expect, this has fostered resentment as Northern Nevadans see Southern Nevada as a potential bully of majority rule and Southern Nevadans see the north as the "old guard" trying to rule as an oligarchy. The Northern Nevadans should just give up. We have a much larger population (1.8 million compared to about 430,000 in Reno/Carson City area) and if it weren't for Southern Nevada the state would be broke. Money equals power.Despite the disdain of the "evil"

Sacked
2007-04-13 00:40:00
Imus, the radio guy, was officially sacked by CBS Radio today. This comes after cancellation by MSNBC and outrage from folks over a throw out comment made on his radio program on Monday. You all know what it's about, so I'm not going to regurgitate the story.I'm not a fan of Imus. In fact, I've never even listened to his stupid, boring radio program. But I find the response to his mistep this week to be very disturbing. In fact, it's a bit worrisome, when you consider the rights guaranteed to each of us Americans under the Constitution. It's amazing how the media, under the pressure of just a few "activists," can sensationalize something so insignificant into a major story. Where do we draw the line? Rappers (African-American) spew out derogatory statements about women, and people in general, in their songs and nobody, including Rev. Al Sharpton, even bats an eye. But when one old, decaying caucasian radio host says something jokingly it's foul and vile. Meredith Viera questioned

Crash
2007-04-13 17:11:00
I forgot to mention that Zane had his first real walking fall on Tuesday night. Although he's a very accomplished walker now, he tends to get too confident and literally tries to run. This creates a situation where his feet will slow down, but the top of his body will keep going causing him to fall forward. We're always having to tell him to slow down. Getting to the point of this post, the other night he fell forward and hit the edge of his grandma's glass coffee table with his face. I was close by and it sounded bad. He screamed horribly as I rushed to administer aid. I picked him up and examined his forehead for any dents or cuts, but not realizing that his nose was gushing blood all over my shirt. Luckily he didn't get seriously injured. He hit just right to have just a bloody nose. A little lower would have been his upper lip or even his new teeth. Higher would have been the bridge of his nose. Ten minutes after it happened he was fine. Little kids are so resilient. The only e

Houston Arrival
2007-04-14 23:58:00
I arrived in Houston this afternoon for my business trip. The flight was not without any excitement. Just after our plane arrived at the gate at Hobby Airport a man sitting in the row in front of me made a load grown and collapsed onto the floor. Several passengers that are medical professionals jumped to his aid, but it appeared very bad. Unfortunately, as he laid in the aisle dying, all of us were stuck watching the poor man turn purple. It took about 15 minutes for paramedics to arrive onto the airplane and another 15 to get him off. He was quite large. While waiting, the aiding passengers administered CPR. As the paramedics hauled him off the plane, he already looked dead. I think he had a severe stroke or aneurysm. It's sad. He was traveling alone. You can't help but wonder if a loved one was waiting in a vehicle or the main terminal of the airport for the man to arrive. Now I'm in my hotel, which is located in Downtown Houston. It's my first time downtown. It's like a ghost t

Alarming

Gun violence in this country is out of control. What happened at Virginia Tech earlier this week was a tragedy of epic porportions. Now there are copycat threats popping up all over the country, including here in Nevada. And today a gunman entered NASA's Johnson Space Center and killed himself along with a hostage. When will this crap end?Rothfamilyadventures.com

San Diego
2007-04-20 06:13:00
Sorry for the delay in posting over the past few days. We went to San Diego and didn't bring the computer. I had to go for work, but Grace was able to get some time off from work, so we made it a family trip. We stayed at a quaint little hotel across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado (couldn't afford the Hotel Del) on Coronado Island. The weather was a little breezy and cool, but it was sunny and beautiful. Zane got to put his toes in sand and touch the Pacific Ocean for the very first time. He wasn't quite sure about the cold water, but he enjoyed pointing at the airplanes flying in across the shore and at the hundreds of seagulls passing above.Grace's sister, Glasel, and nieces, Dyezabelle and Brieze, were able to join Grace and Zane on Wednesday as I had work to do. They had fun going to brunch and walking down Orange Ave.We arrived home this evening. Here's some pics for the adventure.Zane with a smile as we embarked on our drive to San Diego . He fell asleep just minutes
