2007-03-07 22:10:00
Well now let's see what is new on the agenda today! Friday of course is open Mic. Dan will be running it again. We have been having some success with open mic and we are getting a variety of talented people to come in and share. It is turning out to be a lot of fun and it is regular! Since scheduling open mic we have not had one night where we have not had people in to entertain!Saturday is Clem Floyd again. Clem is truly a treat! To hear his music check out our entry for February 24th. We have three videos of him playing that night. Better yet come check him out in person this Saturday!I finally got Wendy Lee Lynds pieces up and her name on our board. I am enclosing some pics of her pieces. Wendy is a local artist and one that I am representing here at Rockhoppers. I hope you enjoy her pieces. If you care to find out more info about her work or a specific piece just ask. Again, all her work is for sale here at Rockhoppers as well as all of the other art in the store. The painted furn

It's a Monday in Paradise
2007-03-06 19:38:00
If you weren't in the shop last night you missed an event! Actually it was just a small event but when the events are not planned it is somewhat magical! We had our chess guys playing as usual. They are a terrific group of guys and if you like chess, you really should come play on Monday s. I guarantee you would have a great time! Anyway, there is this other group of people who have started coming in and playing hearts at the back of the shop. They are a group of friends and are a joy to have here. I love laughter and they really enjoy their time here. Then we had a small group who are working on a fundraiser who met in our back room. All in all it was somewhat full last night. Anyway, one of the card players broke away from that group and discovered my husbands guitar. We encouraged her to play it and BOY DID SHE!! What a terrific voice she has!!! Anyway, she will be coming back this Friday for open mic! Don't miss this!! She is absolutely terrific although she is a little unsure of

A story for posterity
2007-03-05 21:34:00
Well it is another Monday. Actually I love Mondays. They generally are our best day of the week. But this Monday I just feel like tellin' a story ... So sit down children in a semi circle around me, and listen to this wonderful story written in honor of my sons.I believe I have told you that my husband, and children and I, have traveled all over the United States. Dan was in the Navy and they transferred us from Oak Harbor WA to Denver to San Diego. When he got out of the military he got a job in Marion Ohio. So we packed up the kids and moved to Marion. After 4 years in Mt Gilead (where we lived) we moved back to WA only this time we got to live on the south end of the island in Clinton. Anyway, this story takes place as we are getting ready to move to WA. From Ohio. Seems my son (Dan Adam) went to school one day about three days before we were to leave. At the end of one of his classes he got up to say goodbye to his teacher, and the SCIENCE teacher told him goodbye and to have fun

Spring is coming?....
2007-03-01 22:19:00
That sentence kind of reminds me of my sister in laws favorite chant... I love my husband.. I love my husband... I love my husband... then when she gets frustrated she just repeats HEFTY HEFTY HEFTY... wimpy wimpy wimpy...Anyway.. spring is coming... spring is coming.... spring is coming...

A wonderful Sentiment (I want to be coffee??)
2007-02-27 23:50:00
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the Carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out andPlaced them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see." "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then aske

It's tuesday on the Island
2007-02-27 21:43:00
Well, I am back... I had a few really crazy days and now it is time to get caught up on the blog. Dan was gone on Friday and I had Michael cover the shop so I could go run Bingo at the hall. We had some teens in to sing, play guitar and do a reading but with only Michael we didnt get any pics.. sorry. Saturday we had Clem Floyd. Clem is a wonderful entertainer and someone that I think everyone would enjoy. Check out the videos of him in the prior post. Clem will be returning every second Saturday of the month. This next week is EriK Christensen. Erik is from Oak Harbor and has become a regular here.He brings with him a kind of folk, rock sound that is reminescent of Dillon. So if you can come listen for a few minutes or a few hours. It is also the first Saturday of the month and we will be playing D&D again. This group of players has been playing together since they were in their early 20's and all in the Navy. We raised our kids together and when they were old enough they started to p

Getting ready to Paint?
2007-02-23 02:48:00
I guess I am getting a little spring fever. I am starting to think about painting again. i'm also not sleeping again but well that is a norm lately... I have some really cool ideas for lamps again and I am getting kind of itchy to do my big bench. I plan on cleaning my studio either tomorrow or Sunday and putting some order into it. Then it will be painting time. I extend my invite to anyone who would like to paint to come and join me. You may have to paint in a different part of the shop or a different room but the invite extends to anyone who would like to join me. Call if you want to join me and I should be able to give you an idea of when I will most likely be painting. It looks like I will be doing the wonderful job of Bingo Manager for the hall again tomorrow evening so if you are someone who likes bingo then come join us at 6:30PM.We are still doing the open mic on Friday evening at 7:00PM so if you are musically or entertainingly inclined then come join us and make a wonderful

Rockhoppers is having some fun this Year! We are looking for a few people who would like to do some amateur theater. We want to have some fun and create a Rockhoppers' troupe that would do some regular entertaining here at Rockhoppers and then once a quarter would perform a dinner theater over at the Clinton Community Hall. We would like musicians, comedians and generally people who want to laugh and have fun with a small group of people who are interested in also having fun. If you are interested, Let me know. We will try and set up a time for everyone to get together and we can get this show on the road (so to speak).

Coming to Rockhoppers this Saturday
2007-02-20 23:00:00
Folk/Pop Legend Clem Floyd, Live at Rockhoppers , Saturday , February 24, 2007 at 7:00pm.Whidbey resident Clem Floyd is a bona-fide folk/pop legend. Clem was a fixture at the Avant Garde Coffeehouse in Milwaukee, the heart of the city's counter-culture in the 60's. Clem introduced his roommate and musical partner David Crosby (yes, that David Crosby) to the music of the Beatles while living in Chicago. Clem brought home "Meet the Beatles", and David was absolutely floored: "Those are folk-music changes, but it's got rock and roll back beat. You can't do that, but they did! Holy yikes!"Later, Clem would build a 43-foot Trimaran in his Hollywood backyard, and sail off to South America. When he returned to the States, he became an engineer with Union Carbide for 25 years, leaving the music industry behind. Now performing again, Clem is an amazing entertainer and musician. Come to Rockhoppers Saturday night for a wonderful concert experience, and don't forget our regular Friday Open

Valentine's Day
2007-02-15 03:36:00
Well, it is Valentine 's Day and on the way into the shop this morning I listened to NPR. For Valentine's they were having their listeners call in with sad Valentine stunts that failed. Then they added ones that worked. I have a story for their show but since I was in the car coming to work and then had customers... well, I will post the story here... I don't know if you know this (many of our customers and all our friends do) but Dan and I were high school sweethearts. Dan and I met the year I broke up with my first true love. Actually, we met about two weeks after my 1st love and I called it quits.. I was devastated. I spent the whole weekend of the county fair wondering what I did wrong to make Clifford drop me. Debby his sister spent the whole weekend consoling me and Dan spent the whole weekend trying to get Debby alone! Debby threatened me with death if I let this happen so... Dan in his infinite wisdom decided to get me sick on the carnival rides. If I got ill I would go away

Tuesday, Tuesday....
2007-02-13 21:37:00
Boy, the next time I complain about our weather here, Remind me about New York's winters! It is another gray day here on our beautiful island! The shop is bright warm and welcoming and people have been coming in for cards and coffee and snacks as well. So things are going well here. I ordered scones and they will be in Thursday. I have fresh baked pie and fresh baked cookies and today we have chicken noodle soup. Don't know if I will have anyone to eat it but it is here. My card group just left. They play bridge. I guess they have been taking lessons together and they really enjoy each others company. They spend a lot of time laughing and talking while they play and it is fun having them in the shop. When I learned pinochle I was told that they would not teach me bridge because I didn't take my cards seriously enough... I think I would rather play with this group anyway... They don't take their cards seriously enough either but they have fun playing!!I had a full house last night a

Another Monday

Boy has it been busy! I love that the shop is picking up and that people are finding us. It gives some validity to my ideas! I have a place to share with you. It is a business on the island that is owned by friends of mine. http://www.islandangelchocolates.com/ This is a chocolate bar in Langley. Starting this Valentine's Day they will be serving chocolate fondue. I don't know about you, but I love chocolate fondue, and Dan and I will be visiting it this Sunday! Stop by and say "Hi" to Mona and Tony and tell them I sent you! I didn't get a chance to really talk about our show last Saturday. Steve Jordan and Ed Newkirk were absolutely wonderful and the shop was FULL! It was really fun! I would love to see the shop that busy every Saturday evening when we have music! Anyway, the pictures of people in the shop were taken at the show and as you can see everyone was enjoying themselves. Thank you for coming and listening and eating and drinking. We loved it as much as you did! I

What a night we had last Night!
2007-02-11 01:37:00
Dan had the shop last night. I have been working over at the Clinton Community Hall on Friday evenings as the Bingo Manager. It has been fun but it is time for me to be back at my shop! Especially since Dan had such a great open mic last night! What fun! He had a friend of mine who came and sang a few songs (and he said she has a wonderful voice), her daughter read a play she had written, another man (ClemFloyd) will be entertaining here in a couple of weeks but he brought his granddaughter who danced and he played his guitar and sang and well... it was what we had hoped open mics would be. Unfortunately I don't have any videos of the performances. Dan said he was a little to busy to take the pics. Tonight we will take videos of our performers! I will post them tomorrow. We got a light on the front of our building finally and we added another spot light to the sign however that light on the sign is just not as bright as I would like it so Dan said he would add a couple more. They are

OOPS!
2007-02-09 22:25:00
Hi everyone,I was just looking to do some marketing on next weekends musical entertainment and discovered from their website that they will not be here until the 17th of March not February. You can check out the Bards of the Koad at www.bardsofthekoad.com So we are revising the calendar to reflect a group I would like to get together. I am looking for people in Clinton interested in do a play here and there for a dinner/theater benefit for the Clinton Community Hall. We are hoping to assemble people who want to just come do some short plays and help with dinner. Rehearsals would take place here at Rockhoppers and then the final performances would occur at the hall. If you are interested come join us next Saturday as we begin meeting for this group. We will meet at 7:00 and we will have some impromptu fun when we do!

It's a Friday
2007-02-09 21:56:00
Well, it has been one weird week. We have either been really busy all day long or we have gone all day and only had one, maybe two customers. Strange.... Anyway, it has been a really good week and there has been a lot happening at the shop. We have a knitting group now that is meeting every Wednesday night at 5:00PM. They are up to 6 knitters.. We have a couple of groups of friends who are coming in and playing cards... One group on Monday and the other came on Thursday.. and well my groups haven't done anything yet but I have hope. I will be concentrating on building my altered book group on Saturdays at 1:00PM. Tomorrow I will be working on it exclusively! So if you take the time to read the blog and are interested come check out our altered book group tomorrow. I am also going to be working on assembling a group of actors and wanna be actors from Clinton to create the Clinton Community theater group. This will be coming up soon and we need people who just want to have some fun and

What a life!
2007-02-08 01:16:00
So Monday was an incredibly busy day with people in all day and evening and just about the time I think "WOW this place might actually make it... " the really good day is followed by one like yesterday. So here I am.. I get up after only 3 restless hours of sleep and I come in to the shop a half hour early because I obligated myself to start walking with a friend on Tuesdays and Thursdays (She is walking for the 3 day cancer walk in September). I walk with her early and get into the shop early and have the soup on, the drip coffee done, a new pie cooked and scones made all by the normal opening time of the shop and I don't see another person until almost 3:00PM. Then I see two (one of whom is an artist that I had here at the shop who came in to gab for a while) customers. At 5:00 I have a meeting with the Clinton Progressive Association. I am the vice president of this group so of course I need to be at the meeting ( fortunately they meet here at Rockhoppers). I must have had 6 people

It's Tuesday! Where is everyone?
2007-02-06 22:12:00
Yesterday was one of those terrific days when there was so much going on at the shop! It is what i would love everyday to be. Mondays are generally a good day anyway at Rockhoppers. We have a strong group of chess and go players that have been coming to Rockhoppers now since before I took Rockhoppers over. These guys are such good guys and it truly does make Mondays my favorite day of the week. Last night we were missing two of the group and it was very quiet from them but we got visited by several groups who met at various areas of the shop and it made the shop fun and filled with laughter and conversation. I love it when the shop is like that! I am working on my taxes this week and I started walking today. I have three meetings tonight and one tomorrow night and I really think by the time these are all done I will be a total basket case! I got a grand total of 4 hours of sleep last night because of the dog and also my hormones! I hate nights like that!Anyway, today there is no one in

A short story
2007-03-10 02:07:00
this was previously posted in my Ferry Folk Blog but I like this story so much I just wanted to share it again.Dan and I and our two boys lived in San Diego for a little over seven years. We lived in North Park for those of you who are familiar with San Diego and for those who have visited San Diego we lived about two miles from the new Naval hospital and Balboa Park. Dan got out of the Navy and got a job in Ohio and we decided to try and sell our home in San Diego before joining Dan in Ohio. So the kids and I stayed in our home in San Diego. I never worried to much because we had a really good dog and our neighbor who was a border patrol man had a really big gun! Anyway, one day I was out working in our front yard and this man comes up the street, stops on the opposite side of the street, walks across the street up my driveway and heads toward my front door. When I asked him if I could help him he responds, "I bet you have a lot of stuff you want to sell if you are selling your house.

How do Artists live? and other meaningful events
2007-03-10 00:29:00
So this has been a really crazy week. The move to get Clinton Days going stronger than the last two years, the increased amount of time I am spending with the Progressive Association business and then my shop...YIKES! It is all good though and when I am done with these events coming up then I feel I really will have accomplished something. I am enclosing a JPEG of the Clinton Days brochure. If you are an artist and would like to participate in our Clinton Days celebration fill it out and call me for an address to send it to. In the meantime I am planning a Clinton "How Do Artists live" tour. This tour will be open to all artists. Currently we are in the planning stage and have not quite figured out how we are going to do this yet but we are thinking it will be a tour of studios and homes. We will have docents at each location to help facilitate the tour and to point out items of interest. We will also have the artists schedule times for working so we can schedule tours around those tim

An Artist's Footprint- A tribute to Krystal Place
2007-03-10 21:31:00
I just opened my newspaper today to discover that Krystal Place has passed away. Krystal was one of the first artists to display in our shop. She was truly a free spirit and her work was really varied. Krystal was one of the regions outsider artists. I have posted a few of her pieces in today's blog and I hope you enjoy her work. Several of her pieces are for sell to help settle her estate so if you find something you like let me know and I will see if I can find out the information on how to get them.

Friday's Open Mic
2007-03-10 20:24:00
Note that this post is by Dan. Rene is so busy that I do most of the videography, and posting of videos, so I have my own account to do that. I have also been hosting our Friday open mic's, because of Rene having to manage the bingo games at the Clinton Community Hall for the Progressive Club.We didn't have too many people for open mic this Friday, but boy, did we have some amazing music. Alyssa Ingersoll played and sang -- she has a fantastic voice! Her mother, Rena Edelen, an old hand at the coffeehouse scene, also entertained us. The two of them teamed up on a wide selection of folk classics. It was a lovely evening.I joined Alyssa and Rena for one of my favorite songs: "Long Black Veil"Here's the video.http://video.google.com/videouploadfinished?docid=-4759464277365265267&cid=4307173149dcffa6

coming Soon to Rockhoppers
2007-03-13 05:05:00
So we have a wonderful group coming to entertain us this weekend. You can catch them at http://www.bardsofthekoad.comIf you enjoy rousing eclectic music then you will love this group! Plus they are really neat people! The Bards of the Koad were formed in the early fall of 2001. The "Koad" (pronounced KO-ad) is a sanctuary of learning and magick, traditionally where Druids would study their craft. We gather together and celebrate the sacred, to increase our knowledge of music and of the Gods in a safe, loving environment. The group continued to grow through 2002. In the summer, Teresa joined the Bards, bringing her haunting dusky voice and talent for creating harmonies. Cerrigan brought a beautiful, clear soprano voice and a great ear for harmony. .The group consists of Paula, Teresa, Cerrigan and Michael.Paula has performed in various musical productions throughout her life including "Bye, Bye Birdie", "The Wizard of Oz", "Music Man", "Once Upon a Mattress", and "Gypsy." She's competed
