THE GMC's WITCH HUNTING SEASON 2007-05-13 19:40:00 Finlay Scott of the GMC enlisted Ms Penny Mellor for advice on her vast knowledge of advanced paediatrics. Both have decided to whip us doctors into shape for the forthcoming witch hunt. Here is the 50 paediatricians and me setting up tents outside GMC towers in Manchester ready for the GMC witch hunting season. Since 1999, Southall has been a disliked man. No one can actually tell me why they dislike him but they do. Recently, I asked Mr Hemming MP to outline the scientific evidence and comparisons between Mengele's experiments and Professor Southall's research. Mr Hemming has of course bandied around this phrase for a while. Ms Mellor has done the same. Its only fair that they should scientifically debate this and justify the use of this word. This has always been my favourite film - Some Like it Hot. I first watched it when I was 12 and learning to speak English like the rest of the world in England. It had been difficult to prim up my accent. It was the thick African accent that I attempted to get rid of. Everyone around me at school spoke with a clipped accent and there was me - brash, said it how it was and what you see is what you get. There are still elements of that. The process of beating the GMC is always like dancing on glass. The judgment against the Department of Health can be downloaded here and their website has their speech to the masses. I wrote a piece called Black-stones about their choice of legal team. Both I and Jen Colman saw this coming as we both felt that the JR was drafted badly. Anyhow, I tried to explain things to Remedy and their supporters but no one wished to listen. We therefore had to watch while Richard Marks led their team to certain failure. Richard though is a man who clearly feels that the bigger the reputation of the wig the more likely they are to win. He also never listens to what is being said to him. Then again, who are we to criticise him, certainly not one of the accepted masses. Nevertheless, we win in court most of the time. Remedy UK has some good people but seems to make these mistakes. It tries to please too many people while sacrificing a streak that is required - one of vision, one ofbelief and one of bravery.
