INVISIBLE DOCTORS 2007-03-16 22:27:00 When I first started to use the internet to create some rebellion in the ranks, the internet was hardly used by doctors. Indeed, the web was never respected. These days, the web is considered a bad thing where apparently patients get bad ideas and where medicine cannot be trusted. Quackwatch does a good job of monitoring this. Nevertheless, the internet is an untrustworthy element and certainly dangerous to the patient population. In my view, the internet opens a world of information where patients have opportunity to research and study what is right for them. They can often decipher untrustworthy material and I credit a lot of patients with a great deal of intelligence. My practise of medicine has moved forward - I often engage patients to look up leaflets on the internet or to research their questions. Indeed, the internet can be used to support patients through good support networks as well as enable people to find the information they require. I have never found it a hindrance. I b
MAMA MIA - Support Groups Behaving Badly 2007-03-16 21:09:00 Trauma to the mind is an interesting thing to observe. Moreover, when many people with trauma on the mind get together, you get the MAMA Board. For those who are not aware of what this is. It is a piddly little board in the middle of nowhere which is the centre of the media's attention and one that causes a great deal of doctors distress. I can accept valid criticisms of doctors but the criticisms on this board seem to be erratic, without merit and a complete mess. This is the first impression in the last few hours. Professor Southall has specifically been given a railroading. The problem with people who have suffered ( justified or not) is that they assume that the world revolves around them. IN MEMORY OF SALLY CLARK 2007-03-18 09:31:00 Sally Clark was wrongly accused of murdering her two babies. She spent nearly three years clearing her name. On appeal, there was evidence that the two children died of an infection. Sally was instrumental in ensuring that Roy Meadow was struck off for professional misconduct before this was overturned on appeal from the GMC. She was also instrumental in the finding against Professor Southall at the GMC. Southall had alleged that her husband may have been responsible for ending the lives of the children.On behalf of many of my colleagues who believe that expert witnesses should have accountability, I would like to thank Ms Sally Clark for the wonderful work she did to challenge the medical profession and to bring experts into line. ONE GIANT LEAP FOR THE GMC. 2007-03-19 12:26:00 What do you mean its easier to walk on the moon than change the GMCThe GMC and I adore each other - well not quite. I do though think that amongst the complete upstarts I have dealt with in there - Mark Ellen has been the best at his job. By the way, I like to think Mark isn't an upstart. SWORD OF DAMOCLES 2007-03-20 23:53:00 Dr Pal was referred to the GMC for eating to much chocolate. It is cited as a contravention of Good Medical Practise. The GMC certificate remains a sword of damocles for any harassing individual who can refer a doctor for any reason they wish - justified or not. What I find amazing is this. Every time I attempt to investigate anyone, they develop the bright idea of referring me to the General Medical Council. Doctors.net.uk users tried it many times ( they know who they are) then so did Tim Woodman. It is a great shame that Dr Woodman became depressed, lost his job and his wife following the said complaint. It was thrown out of course. Another hospital who has bizarre Parking rules is Northampton General Hospital. It is said that some hospitals put patients at risk by making parking problematic for doctors. Forget doctors, how about families of ill or dying people. Petitions were set up on 10 Downing Street's website. There were tales of how long term patients and their relatives with very little means were paying most of their money simply to stay at the hospital.
