THE 80's MIXED SET 2008-01-31 15:30:00 FEXY'S 80'S FUNK BOMBPAR EXCELLENCE MIXHere's something for all you 80's funk lovers. I've been listening to quite a bit of funk recently, not just from the 80's but also from the 70's, and with all that groovin' it inspired me to create this mix. This is kind of a companion mix to Tristan Dee's Hot! 80's Funk Mix. Two tracks, Zapp's It Doesn't Really Matter and Vanity 6's Nasty Girl, which were featured in Tristan's mix also make an appearance here although Zapp's track is the extended version and Nasty Girl is a different remix. There are also a couple of fantastic rare mixes. The Datashat Mix of Grand Master Flash's The Message is a great rework which puts the vocoder to great work. One track of particular interest is the Jimmy M Mix of Johnny Harris' Odyssey. Those of you who are up on
NEW ORDER 2008-01-15 19:34:00 TEMPTATION(ORIGINAL 7" VERSION)(ORIGINAL 12" VERSION)('87 SUBSTANCE VERSION)('98 REMIX)(SECRET MACHINES MIX)Temptation was released as a single by New Order in 1982. It was available on 12" and 7" vinyl, both formats had the catalogue number FAC 63. The two formats are not merely different mixes, but entirely separate recordings of the same song. The 7" version is a more structured version with a commercial synthpop feel; the 12" is more chaotic with the emphasis on electronic rhythms rather than melody. The 7" version plays at 33.3rpm to accommodate its length of around five and a half minutes.Interestingly, the 12" version has a fade-in at its start, with a cold end, and the 7" version has a cold start and a fade-out at its end. As a result, a popular rumour among New Order fans that to
ORIGINAL DJ REMIX 2008-01-13 20:24:00 ITSTHEKID JOY DIVISIONATMOSPHERE(ITSTHEKID'S NEW ORDER MIX)Here's a great original remix of my favourite Joy Division track Atmosphere. It was sent to me by a nice fellow named Vincent (aka itsthekid). In his email he said about this mix:"I made this remix of Atmosphere for my brother, who is as big a Joy Division/New Order fan as one can be. This mix actually has a lot of New Order samples in it. This mix was done many years ago, using an old version of Acid. Not being very experienced, it's not as clean or polished as the mixes I've heard on your site, but I thought I'd send them your way anyway.Hope you like."ATMOSPHERE (ITSTHEKID'S NEW ORDER MIX)
DOUBLE 2008-01-11 17:56:00 YOUR PRAYER TAKES ME OFF(THE SWICO RE-TOUCH)Your Prayer Takes Me Off was a single released in 1986 following on from the successful The Captain Of Her Heart. Both of which were from Double's 1985 debut album Blue. The track is the most uptempo and dance driven song on the album but did not chart. The version here was known as The Swico Re-Touch when the original Canadian 12" was released but in recent years I have seen it renamed the London Mix as a bonus track on a reissue of Double's Blue on CD. There was also a Dub Version of Your Prayer Takes Me Off released as the B-side of both the 7" and 12" of The Captain Of Her Heart in some countries but I have yet to hear this version.YOUR PRAYER TAKES ME OFF (THE SWICO RE-TOUCH)
THE 80's MASH-UP 2008-01-11 16:27:00 PRINCE VS. MICHAEL JACKSONBEATDANCE (JUST BAT IT)Another full 80's mash-up for you and some more of Prince's Batdance too. This one was mixed by VeeringAxiom who put together Michael Jackson's Beat It with Prince's Batdance. This is what VeeringAxiom said about this mash-up:"I wanted to find something that mixed with Beat It, and preferably by Prince. I mean, come on - the Prince and MJ dynamic? How could you miss an opportunity like that? And out of all things, that Prince song ended up being Batdance, which seemed odd at first, but when I began to mix them, it worked like a charm. I'm not saying this because I think I'm so great at mashing or anything, but when I listened to how the second verse of Beat It blended with the catchy synthesizer line from Batdance, and when I noticed the pla
STEVIE WONDER 2008-01-10 19:50:00 GO HOME(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)Go Home was the second single from Stevie Wonder's 1985 album In Square Circle following the successful single Part-Time Lover. The song became another #1 adult contemporary hit for Wonder and reached #10 on the pop singles chart. It was Wonder's last Top 10 hit on the Billboard pop singles chart and is my favourite track from his 80's catalogue. Many thanks to Oznerol for this gem!GO HOME (ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)Go Home was performed at the 1985 Grammy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, California in the infamous synthesizer jam with other contemporaries Herbie Hancock, Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby.
SEVERED HEADS 2008-01-09 16:49:00 BIG CAR(ORIGINAL 12" LIMO MIX)(ORIGINAL 12" CRASH MIX)(RETREAD MIX)Another track from my favourite Australian group. Big Car was Severed Heads 3rd 12" single release from the group's 1989 album Rotund For Success. This track, and more so the original remixes, is probably the most commercial sounding composition that the band has ever done considering their heavily experimental electronic background. These tracks are now freely available on Severed Heads official site at Check it out!BIG CAR (ORIGINAL 12" LIMO MIX)BIG CAR (ORIGINAL 12" CRASH MIX)BIG CAR (RETREAD MIX)
No title 2008-01-03 21:05:00 GIRL U WANT(BLACK LIGHT ODYSSEY MIX)(WAITING FOR THE NIGHT BOAT REMIX)Girl U Want was from Devo's third studio album Freedom Of Choice released in 1980. Warner Brothers actually chose to release the track as the first single from album and not Whip It, which is now considered Devo's biggest hit. Girl U Want did not chart when it was released, which was strange considering is was probably one of Devo's most commercial sounding records to that date. The track would later appear on the soundtrack to the 1995 film Tank Girl but as a new re-recorded version which was slower with more guitars and less synth. The Waiting For The Night Boat Remix is actually this version but with it sped up to match the original 1980 track. See the original post for this mix at the Waiting For The Night Boat Blog.
HOWARD JONES 2008-01-02 16:51:00 LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU WELL(ORIGINAL INTERNATIONAL MIX) (MOHITO VS. HOWARD JONES "SLIP AWAY" ANGELLO MIX)In August 1984 Howard Jones release The 12" Album which was a collection of extended and remixed versions of his previous hits. On the compilation the new composition Like To Get To Know You Well was included and was released as a single. The single climbed to #4 on the UK Singles Chart is probably Jones' biggest hit. The track was included years later on the cd version of Jones' second studio album Dream Into Action.LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU WELL(ORIGINAL INTERNATIONAL MIX)LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU WELL(MOHITO VS. PHIL COLLINS 2007-12-26 17:19:00 SUSSUDIO(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" REMIX)(ALPHA CONSPIRACY MIX)(TRIOBELISK MIX)I haven't had a Phil Collins post on here for awhile so I think now is the time.Sussudio was released as a single in January 1985. The song is from Collins' third album, No Jacket Required, released in February of the same year. The song entered frequent rotation on MTV in May, and by July 6, both the single and the album reached number one on their respective U.S. Billboard charts.Despite reaching No. 1 on the charts and its continuing popularity on adult contemporary stations, "Sussudio" was ranked number 24 on VH1's "40 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever." Appearing on VH1 Storytellers, Collins said that "Sussudio" is an imaginary girl's name meant to symbolize any girl. The song is about having a crush on someone whe
80's CHRISTMAS CLASSICS 2007-12-16 19:16:00 XTC/THE THREE WISE MENTHANKS FOR CHRISTMASCOUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS PARTYTIMECHRISTMAS BONUSCOUNTOWN TO CHRISTMAS PARTYTIME (ORIGINAL DEMO)SNOWMANIn October of 1983 XTC recorded 2 Christmas songs intended as a double sided Christmas single. The tracks were produced by XTC and David Lord and were released under the guise of The Three Wise Men and the Good Lord. The A-side of the single was Thanks For Christmas with the B-side being Countdown to Christmas Party Time. Andy Partridge from XTC had originally intended to invite some office girls from Virgin Records to sing on the record and call them The Virgin Marys. Although authorship of both songs is credited to Kaspar, Melchoir, and Balthazar, they were actually written by Andy. It was never decided who was Kaspar, Melchoir, or Balthazar among
THOMAS DOLBY 2007-12-13 20:21:00 EUROPA AND THE PIRATE TWINS(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)Europa And The Pirate Twins was released on 10th October 1981 and is Thomas Dolby's first single for Decca on their Parlophone label after releasing material on his own independent label Armageddon records. Europa peaks at #48 on the UK singles chart while later that year in May 1982 Dolby releases his debut album titled The Golden Age Of Wireless where it peaks at #65 in the UK which peaks at #13 in the US. It is not until after the single release of She Blinded Me With Science in the US that Europa And The Pirate Twins finally makes its US singles debut and it peaks at #67. Great synth tune!EUROPA AND THE PIRATE TWINS(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN 2008-03-24 15:45:00 BORN IN THE U.S.A. (REPOSTED UPDATE)(THE FREEDOM MIX)(DUB MIX)(RADIO MIX) Recently, I have received an email from the man himself Arthur Baker, thanking me for posting his remixes and also correcting me on a few facts. Check it out! I've been told by Arthur Baker! Pretty cool! Thanks Arthur."Hi, thanks for putting up my Springsteen Born In The USA remixes. Unfortunately they don't seem to be commercially available on any of Bruce's compilations. However, you are wrong about him not liking the 3 mixes I did for him. On Dancing In The Dark, he actually came to the studio and hung out with us, going as far as popping out for beer when the studio-Power Station- had a momentary blackout. I did the mix for Cover Me inpart to give Bruce some new ideas for that the band could use for its live arra
VAN HALEN 2008-03-26 20:12:00 WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" MIX)Why Can't This Be Love was the initial single from Van Halen's 7th album 5150, released in March of 1986. The album was the band's first with lead singer Sammy Hagar, who had replaced founding member David Lee Roth in late 1985. The song, driven by bouncy lead keyboard work from Eddie Van Halen, rose to #3 on the Billboard singles chart, and helped 5150 reach the #1 slot on the album chart, a first for the band. During the 5150 tours, Eddie Van Halen played the keyboard parts while Hagar played the guitar parts and the solo. Why Can't This Be Love was also the very first Van Halen track to get an official Extended Mix treatment.WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE (ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12 " MIX)
ROMEO VOID 2008-03-29 19:53:00 NEVER SAY NEVER(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)Romeo Void were a New Wave band from San Francisco, California who were active from 1979 to 1985. Their popularity was primarily in alternative and college radio, and as a dynamic performing act. The original band members met at the San Francisco Art Institute. Most of the band members were also visual artists and did their own album art.Never Say Never was first released in 1982 as a self titled 12" E.P. which was co-produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. The track was later included on the band's second studio album Benefactor that same year but as a shorter clean edit more suitable for general radio broadcast. The track was a favourite on early MTV. HAIRCUT ONE HUNDRED 2008-03-30 19:14:00 FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)Although Haircut One Hundred only lasted a few years they were successful right away after they began performing. Their first album, Pelican West went straight to #2 with the lead off single, Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl), going to #4 in the UK charts back in 1981. The album also produced 3 more singles, one of which, Love Plus One, was featured on an earlier post on Born Again '80s. Great tune!FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)
