Ahhhhh our basement is flooding! (so why am i here posting?)
2008-07-17 11:10:05
Because i needed a break ;) That, and i frugal'd (word?) my way into a discount! Mrs. Budgetsaresexy came home last night to find out that there's water swimming around our basement, and it was about to flood into our carpet! We luckily caught it in time, but have been trying to figure out what the F happened all night long - and without the A/C running :(We narrowed it down to either our conde

I loaned my brother $1230 and I WILL be getting it back.
2008-07-16 12:40:34
This is part two of a two part series on loaning family money. This is the GOOD part. (the not-so-good part is here)Last year my darling bro was considering his first foray into home ownership. He was certain he could afford his condo, but he just wanted to be 200% sure. At the time I had a couple hundred dollars at my disposal each month, so I offered to hook him up.Having just gone through the p

People who like to "split the tab" are no longer my friends.
2008-07-15 09:50:56
This whole split ting the bill business is really starting to get to me. It seems to be happening all the freakin' time!I know it's easier and quicker to pay this way, but in most cases it's never fair for all parties involved. And do you ever notice that the person who brings it up, is usually the one who ordered more than everyon else?! HAH. In case you aren't in the mood to read about last night

O.M.G. I might be buying a new car.
2008-07-12 14:57:24
I just came across a killer Cadillac on Craigslist, test drove it, and now i want it! I really shouldn't have gone over to look at it, but I couldn't help myself. The best part, besides the price ($3,400!), is that it's owned by a mechanic! And one who enjoys supping it up a bit too ;)I'm doing the research on it now, and will give my self a cple days to take it all in, but i'm 75% thinking of g

Even if i were loaded, i still wouldn't blow my money.
2008-07-11 11:02:00
Chairs "on sale" for $479? Each? I love my posterior, but not THAT much! haha... that's seriously a lot of dough. I'd ask if anyone disagrees with me, but it's probably pointless on a blog dedicated to personal finance. It really does amaze me, though, that there's a market for this stuff. And even worse, this is probably on the lower side of high-end furniture. Can you imagine dishing out a coupl

I loaned my uncle $100, and i will not be getting it back.
2008-07-10 09:38:22
This is part one of a two part series on loaning family money. This is the not-so-good part. When it comes to mixing money & family, i'm usually against it. As it turns out though, i can easily be convinced ;)People say they'll loan out money if they trust they'll get it back, but how do you know who WILL and who WON'T do so? Are your friends and family inherently trustful in this dept? For me,

I am taking Mrs. Budgetsaresexy's last name. (holler)
2008-07-09 14:41:12
Awww Yeah! I will now be going as "J. Money", instead of "J. Savings" (You didn't know that was her last name?) I figure I owe it to her since she'll be taking my last name in the real world ;)Actually, the REAL reason i'm changing it is because it just sounds a helluva lot cooler. I one time "found" this license plate back in college that said C. Money, and it always stuck with me. Plus, it doesn

My Financial Vice is not from Miami...so where, then?
2008-07-09 10:14:33
Nickel posed a great question the other day asking "What is your biggest financial vice?" His was eating out 3-4 times a week for lunch, and it seemed the same for many of the other commenters as well. Although my favorite so far is the gambler who lost $20k last year (ouch) - that's definitely a vice alright! But who doesn't love Texas Hold'Em?So here i am trying to figure out my own biggest vice

Book Review: The Millionaire Next Door

BOOK: The Millionaire Next Door AUTHOR: Thomas J. Stanley, William D. DankoSEXINESS: 4 Thumbs ups! (toes count)Tied for my all-time favorite financial book! Where as The Automatical Millionaire (the other favorite) shows you HOW to reach your goals, this book helps get your "financial mind" positioned right - and does so brilliantly! There's one defining concept portrayed throughout:Always live belo

We are keeping our variable interest rate on our Heloc.
2008-07-08 08:45:35
The Mrs. and i have made a decision on our HELOC dilemma! We have decided to stick with option #1 - to continue going with the variable rate with no locks. Your comments definitely helped us put things in perspective, and we feel the odds are in our favor :) And with the other week's news about the Fed leaving the rates unchanged, i'm thinking we're on the right path. The worst that can happen is i

Man it was hard getting up this morning! I think i overdosed on hazelnutt coffee yesterday while sitting in 9-hour beach traffic...which is sad, considering i'm sipping on MORE as we speak ;) Addicted much? haha...At any rate, I came across a link for the Motley Fool in my inbox the other day, and think you might enjoy it. It's so sad because i was really excited to read it! Maybe i just haven't gotten to the good parts yet?Anyways, so I decided to pick up a n

One of the best $300 items we've ever bought - a new stove!
2008-07-31 10:04:31
Woohoo - we're modernized! Not only is this one hella sexy stove, but it came with a hardcore discount. (did you ever doubt?)This is one of those times where i absolutely LOVE home ownership because you can do whatever your heart desires. Can you imagine if we were renting and I asked our landlord to upgrade appliances based on the way they look? shoooooooooot. The original stove worked fine, and w

Words of wisdom from the queen of finance herself - Suze Orman (who seems to be popping up everywhere these days!)I don't know much about her, but it sure seems like she wants me to :) She's on every other magazine, or financial show i check out - my favorite being the SNL skits they always do on her! haha.... she's got one helluva marketing strategy! But this quote of hers, "You have to look at wh

One hundred and twenty - three dollars, can you believe that?!And the sad part is, we could have EASILY avoided it altogether! arghh....just thinking of it gives me the heebie jeebies.Oh well, as soon as I get it out of my system here I'll lock it up in the old "stop thinking about me" department ;)The whole thing started when we were invited to a combined bachelor/bachelorette party up in Philly

My Toyota Highlander is up For Sale, and Everyone's hatin'
2008-07-29 09:59:41
Man, this time last year it would have been sold instantly! Leather, heated seats, 3rd row, 6-cd changer, all luxury man - it's a great buy.But here we are, one year later and it's already got a bad rap. The second you call it an SUV (*ghasp!) it gets discriminated against :( Sure it sucks down more gas than the pretty boy Prius, but it doesn't mean you should hate on it - it's just looking for a

A Personal Thank You to Great Customer Service out There.
2008-07-24 11:33:28
Oooooooh how I love me some excellent customer service! Seriously, in a consumer driven society shouldn't we be getting this all the freakin' time anyways? (the answer is Yes). Being a Customer Service Manager myself, I understand and appreciate the role the customer plays - without them, I wouldn't be sitting here right now typing away on my work's computer ;) Shhhh...But the sad truth is that th

The Mrs. and I have been looking for some more money hacks lately, and we stumbled across a great one!By combining both of our lines into one "Family Share " plan with Verizon Wireless, we'll have maximum bang for our buck :)I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but it's all good now! The Smartest Advice on Money I Ever Got. What's Yours?
2008-07-21 13:22:53
Before I share my own, totally boring, advice from over the years, I wanted to share my fav. quote from an article in this month's Money Magazine (Aug). It comes from their "Smartest Advice I've Ever Got" article which covered 30+ smarty pants, and the one thing that stuck by them over the years. My awesomest was from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, on her father being the "most fruga

Time for another "Would you rather" question! (a hard one)
2008-08-19 10:49:18
So here it is. You're sitting in a room with all of your closest friends and family, and the mayor of your city singles you out and asks you to come up to the front. He/she tells you that the city has a proposal for you, and you MUST answer it no matter what. The question is:"The city would like to offer you money, but the amount is up to you. We can give you $1 million dollars, but it can ONLY be

iPhones are for Coders, and Sidekicks are for Ballers ;)
2008-08-18 09:46:38
Wouldn't you agree? haha...I don't think i'd ever pick up an iPhone to be honest with ya. And not so much because it rids me of a few benjamins, but because i'm afraid of getting "sucked in" to techno-land!I already have a pretty bad habit of checking email, myspace, my stats on this blog, and everything else now built into our daily routines. So while it would be "cool" to have one, I just don't

Avoid Overdraft Fees by Tying your Checking to your C/C.

Every bank differs, but I have yet to come across one that doesn't
