Twin Thought

If it takes a village to raise a child, what kind of small urban center do multiples require?

For Just A Moment
2007-02-28 14:46:39
The other night I nursed J. lying down in bed, heart to heart. When he was done, he curled up against me and slept. I tucked my knees up so his feet were on my thighs, and rubbed my cheek on the top of his fuzzy head. For a few minutes my adventurer was wholly mine again, sheltered by my body, belonging to me alone.

Five on the Fifth
2007-02-27 18:25:26
So, I was asked by Seabird to come up with 5 words that describe this site. I picked: motherhood, twins, breastfeeding, cuteness, photos. What five words would you pick to describe yourself?

Holy Crap, I Won!
2007-02-27 14:57:08
Liesel Elliott over at Dante’s Inferno with Children picked me as one of her three favorite new blogs. Score! I am amazed she likes me because I am in awe of her writing. She speaks with raw eloquence about growing up with a what I shall call a “less than ideal” mother as well as the challenges and rewards of raising a child with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Go read her.

Weekend Discoveries
2007-02-26 14:45:42
F. There is a drawer at the base of a bookshelf that can be opened and closed. Hey, look, a fireplace! J. The cat’s water dish has a recirculating fountain to keep the water fresh. It’s fun to stick your hand under the stream of water. The storm door has a window right at little person height so you can watch the world go by. If you pull off the breast and squeeze it, milk squirts you in the face. Teething bisquits aren’t just for waving around, they’re for putting in your mouth and chewing on. Yum!

MySpace Removes Breastfeeding Photos
2007-02-25 00:55:25
…because, although 14-year-olds claiming to be 21 and posting photos that make themselves look like hookers is totally OK, a woman breastfeeding is indecent. This pisses me off. Let me explain. No, that would take too long. Let me sum up. News Story: http://www.kirotv.com/news/11083731/detail.html Petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/Brstfeed/petition.html I’m number 4329, just so you know.

Friday Twinny Question - Cloth Diapering Twins
2007-03-02 16:11:36
Kat asked: Don’t know if this has already been asked, but how many diapers do you go through a day? And what’s your diapering routine like? I have 21 Kissaluvs and 2 Swaddlebees, and I usually still have about 6 clean diapers when the laundry is done. I have 8 Imse Vimse covers, and I am usually on the last clean one when the laundry is ready. At night each baby goes into a Swaddlebee “one size” with an extra terry cloth insert. After much experimentation I discovered that that was the magic combination that prevented night leaks. In the morning I change them out of the Swaddlebees and into a Kissavluv. I always use a new cover in the morning to start the day out. I put a flushable liner in the diapers so that poop can be lifted out and flushed; I cannot sing the praises of the flushable liner highly enough. Oh, glorious liner, you keep me from having to manhandle excrement. Oh, wonderous liner, you can be tossed in the wash if the baby has only peed.

Kisses
2007-03-05 02:50:48
J. gives kisses. Big, open mouthed sloppy kisses. At first I thought he was trying to latch on to my chin as some sort of 7 month old method of communicating “nursing NOW please.” He’s very enthusiastic. Slobbery, one might say, and joyful as he chows down on my chin. I figured out that this was his way of kissing, however, when I saw him do it to his sister’s head. Then his father’s face. He’s just so adorable, even if I do say so myself.

Twin and Triplet Carnival
2007-03-06 03:49:09
I’m trying my hand at a “blog carnival“, otherwise known as a sneaky way to find more interesting blogs to read and link out to as many of them as possible. So, please use the nifty widget below to link to any post you’ve written about multiples. Anything. Multiple pregnancy, birthing multiples, raising multiples, being a multiple. Anything, as long as you do it by March 10. I’ll choose a handful - assuming enough people play that there are more than a handful to begin with - and feature them later this month.

This Cookie Doesn’t Have Sugar, Does It?
2007-03-05 18:22:23
I had planned on not giving the kids any sugar. Childhood obesity is a huge problem, healthy eating habits should be instilled young, and so on. Notice what F. is feeding herself? That would be a cookie. Technically, it’s a “teething biscuit”, which is, as far as I can tell, a two word phrase meaning “cookie.” I can’t actually find any “teething biscuits” that don’t have sugar in them. The sugar, however, is organic, unrefined cane juice, which is something. Right? Right? Oh well. The best laid plans of mice, mothers and men…

Inspiration
2007-03-07 17:07:23
I am inspired by the twins relationship. They yank toys away from one another, kick each other in the face, kiss each other. They ignore each other and adore each other. They stare at each other and giggle. They grab at each other, and bite each other’s feet. They are so much fun.

8 Months
2007-03-07 04:59:35
8th Month Developmental Milestones Our pediatrician doesn’t schedule a well child visit for this month, so I won’t have weight and length updates until next month. Meanwhile, here is there progress on standard developmental milestones. Verdict: they remain normal, if not exactly advanced in the milestone department. Oh well, I’m a klutz. Vote for J. and F.
2007-03-09 14:21:50
Or, rather, vote for me. There is a photo contest and I entered this photo of J. and F. Go vote for it. Sure, I’m shamelessly groveling for votes. Get used to it. I plan to do this again for the Kissaluvs video. You thought I had pride? Dignity? Nope. Sorry. You can vote once per day March 9 -11 for the photo, so go stuff that ballot box. Vote early. Vote often.

Friday Twinny Question - Solid Foods
2007-03-09 14:19:45
from Eva, my last unanswered twinny question* How is the solid food thing going? What do the kids like/not like? Do you enjoy doing it? I confess I’m a bit torn because it just seems like one more thing to take up time during the day, but my husband thinks it’ll be fun. Are you making your own or doing jars? I just added a second solid feeding during the day, so we are now up to two, one in the early afternoon and one with dinner. It seems to be going pretty well, though I do miss the mustardy breast milk poop. Breast milk poop looks rather like an expensive French mustard. Solid food poop is, umm, nothing like expensive mustard. Let’s just leave it at that. At night we put them in the high chairs and each feed one baby. During the afternoon I have been sitting on the floor, holding F. on my lap and putting J. on the floor in front of me. I was going to feed them each seperately, but James crawled up and opened his mouth, so I went with it. So far we&rsquo

If Only I Had Known…
2007-03-11 19:00:00
High school sex education missed a few things. It didn’t go into fertility charting, for example, or that egg-white cervical mucus means “go have sex NOW” or “for the love of God, don’t have sex today” depending on your procreation goals. When I finished that class I knew what a diaphragm looked like but nothing about, for example, the mechanics of breastfeeding. We all know that breastfeeding is good. We have the reasons to breastfeed shoved down our throats. But many women end up leaving the hospital knowing next to nothing about the actual process of breastfeeding or what to expect over the course of their breastfeeding relationship; we run into hurdles and have no idea whether our struggles are normal. They usually are. I bring you “What we know now that we wish we had known then: breastfeeding wisdom from the trenches” compiled from contributions from my friends ~lovemy2~, Babyesq, Blackbird, Carter&NolansMama, ChrisandJamesII, Gen, Gortday, Je

Twin and Triplet Carnival - Part 2
2007-03-11 14:23:47
THANK YOU to everyone who participated. I loved every blog submitted, and have added them to the blogroll so I can keep reading them regularly. Y’all have some ridiculously cute children and funny, moving and sometimes all too familiar tales. In all the wonder, the following posts stood out to me. Shannon at Stream of Consciousness brings us inside the NICU. Stacey at Learning Along talks about telling her identical girls apart. Jami Leigh brings the perspective of an adult twin to the table. Heather of It’s Twinsanity relates a harrowing (to me, who is about to try it) adventure of taking twins on an airplane. I am amazed at how she managed that by herself! Swistle has a post every mother can relate to about barely holding it together. Christina at She’s a Crafty Pumpkin is still pregnant (and unfairly gorgeously pregnant.) Remember those days? Finally, Kathyrn has could use support from everyone as she copes with a very ill triplet. A charity auction
