New paintings 2008-04-29 21:22:00 I've been painting lately. I have completed five small paintings thus far, in acrylic. Aaaahhh!! It's been a lot of fun!Edited to add:I should probably also mention that I spent the better part of this evening trouble-shooting. I have an Epson Photo Stylus R1800 and was having some major output issues -- you should have seen what I was getting instead of prints. I call it mud! :(Anyway, after a few days of online forum reading and learning the ins and outs, I was able to troubleshoot away my printing problems. (YES!!!) I am not posting this to bore you silly with technical mumbo jumbo though. I am posting it in case any other poor soul out there is potentially experiencing the same frustrating problems with their own Epson R1800 on a Mac running 10.5X. If that sounds like you, please feel

Creative Shake 2008-04-21 20:43:00 Just revised my portfolio on portfolios.com -- uhmmm, I mean, creativeshake.com!(The former...) Portfolios.com slightly revised their business model recently and, following suit, they changed their name to reflect their new identity and services. It seems like the verdict is still out on how people feel about the name change thing, but name change or no, I am aware of the wide reach they have in some specific niches of the creative industry. So when I got a great "speak now or forever hold your peace" type of offer recently, I took the chance and upgraded my portfolio. It was too good to pass up, and I've gotten work from having just a FREE portfolio on portfolios.com. So, that was already a strong built-in advertisement! Read more:Shake

Wacom Cintiq Rebate 2008-04-15 10:14:00 Disclaimer -- I am in no way, shape or form affiliated with Digital Graphics Resources at all (except for being a past customer, and a happy one at that), but I *am* a big, gigantic, honkin' Cintiq-head, and I so enjoy pushing the Wacom Cintiq on other artists. :)That said, DGR is currently selling the Cintiq 21UX with a $500 mail-in rebate. That's a mighty fine deal - 20% off. DGR is where I purchased my own Cintiq and I had a very good experience with them. They are independent and customer-service oriented. :) Read more:Rebate
NESCBWI Conference theme "Spread your Wings" 2008-04-13 21:20:00 Well, the conference is over. On the one hand, it was incredibly invigorating, motivating and inspirational. On the other, I was completely drained when Nell dropped me off at home this afternoon. I went to bed for a five-hour nap. Now I'm up, and I almost don't know where to begin... Okay, I do know where to begin. I need to clean my studio. ;)There is a sense of urgency that is instilled in us attendees, after attending / experiencing a conference like this. It's as if the truth is magnified: time truly IS slipping away (just like the old 'sands in the hourglass') and, if you are not focused already, your challenge is to seriously re-prioritize your life in order to pursue your career in art, before it's too late ('scuse the morbidity). This is a feeling I'm very well-acquainted with - i Read more:Spread

"Bears" by Ruth Krauss 2008-04-06 20:06:00 Last week, leaving the grocery store, I noticed a box filled with picture books, donated for local kids who need them. I looked in the in the box, just out of curiosity. Sitting right on top was a book called "Bears
" by Ruth Krauss. Wow! My socks were knocked off. Not only do I enjoy Ruth Krauss's wonderful stories and poems and artwork, but this actual book was copyright 1948, and was in pristine condition to boot. I flipped through the book and took photos of the spreads. Oh how I coveted it! But at least I have these pictures. Check them out here.(Now that I know that box is there, I will contribute and bring a copy of "The Months" to the grocery store, next time I go!)
RX: Aisle 2 2008-04-04 23:02:00 The 'new thing' in yogurt is (NEWSFLASH! You are *not* going to believe this, but...) it is a digestive aid. Yogurt companies are making a very big deal out of this these days. Like it's new news. If nothing else, I find it entertaining (except for the shameful overpackaging of most of these). The packages look a lot like they are prescription food, they have funny names (Activia - that could be a car! ...or a line of fitness wear), and then they wrap everything to look like vitamins! The cute little (overpackaged...grumble) bottles for their yogurt look like big vitamins (or like little vitamin bottles, depending on your point of view.) Like a shot of wheatgrass, a B-12 shot: Your daily shot of friendly bacteria... I guess.Oh well. I love yogurt (but I'll stick with my old stand-by's, tha
Cool thing!! 2008-04-01 19:51:00 A cute blog called Vintage Indie featured my Umbrella (... -ella, -ella... sorry, couldn't resist) print today! How much fun is that!! Thank you so much Vintage Indie. I am very flattered and I have to admit it give me a little thrill!! :)

New England Aquarium 2008-03-19 22:36:00 What an inspiring, lovely and magical place!! I just could not put the iphone (camera) away... not for two minutes, even. It was very invigorating to visit with all the sea creatures and plants.I was most taken by a seahorse. I was glued to this seahorse. They are such charming, otherworldly little creatures. I just love them!We saw a couple of cuttlefish. They are squid-like, chameleon-like creatures. WOW.Please check my Flickr photostream (link to the right) to see more pics, if you like.Hope you enjoy the swim! :) Read more:Aquarium

Process... Summer Camp Memories 5 2008-03-15 08:51:00 Here is the piece all inked and ready for watercolor. This is a picture from my iphone, not a scan, which explains why it looks so shoddy, but I wanted to show this stage. You will be able to see the ink work better in the final illustration scan!Once the ink is done and dried, I erase all of the pencil from the paper. Here are some of my tools:I like to use the nib pens sometimes because they give an interesting, non-uniform line. But I love my Rapidograph pens too, and they have been my number one for so long, I feel like I am cheating on them by mentioning the nibs. The big brush helps with sweeping away eraser bits off a large piece of paper. (My framer sister Julie gave it to me.) I use mechanical pencils, regular wood pencils and also woodless pencils. (I like HB hardness the best.) Read more:Process

Process... Summer Camp Memories 4 2008-03-14 08:28:00 Here's the next step -- a color study. Look at how rough this is. Sometimes I skip this step, but it is really important to do some color planning -- even if it is super rough, and even if it's just helping me to figure out what I don't want to do. (Sometimes I do it in my head, but I think that doing it on paper helps more, even though it never seems to mimic the finished product at all.) This is one step that's never not helpful. This is just done on the print out from the rough rough initial sketch. See, it's totally non-fancy -- a very useful scribble. (You will see that this little color study helped me figure out what I did not end up doing.) Read more:Process

Visit me on Friday night! 2008-05-07 22:07:00 This Friday
night, May 9 from 6:30 til 8:30 pm, I'll be at Custom Art Framing and Gallery Nine's spring art show, "Start" as a contributing artist! I'll also be bringing lots of books in case you are in the market for a signed copy! :) I'll might even try to dress up a little, if you promise you will try to make it. ;)Among the other artists whose work will be on display (and who will also be there) are artist/teacher and Gallery Nine director Kimberly Morin Weineck as well as jewelry artist extraordinaire and also my sister Nancy MacCallum of Nancy Rosetta jewelry. I am a lucky owner of work from both of these lovely lady artists and (well, obviously...) I am a fan of them as well.Nancy will be doing a demo or speaking as well, so that will be really inspiring no doubt! Both of their blogs

Gina Perry in the news 2008-05-13 10:29:00 Read here all about our blogging illustrator friend Gina Perry
. She was recently interviewed by a local paper and the result is an insightful, informative article/interview. Gina does a really succinct job of explaining the difference between trade and educational illustration. She also reminisces on the push-pull of leaving her former day job -- jumping off that cliff -- something I can completel
