Boxes ready to go! 2008-05-02 22:52:59
Here are the boxes laid out before they were filled. They are patio boxes, 4 2×2’s, and we put them up on bricks for better drainage.
Here is the lineup of Mel’s Mix ingredients - and my hubby scooping them into containers. The book says to use a tarp - but this was less messy and surprisingly fairly quick [...] Read more:Boxes

Icky snow 2008-05-01 10:06:49 It’s a good thing I haven’t planted stuff yet - last night it SNOWED - which is unusual this time of year - although I probably could of just covered my plants and they would of been OK.
Still I am bummed by this psychotic weather - I live in Utah - everyone complains about the [...]
vermiculite woes 2008-04-30 00:41:11
I am now stuck with 2 bags of vermiculite, both of which I have no idea are coarse or medium. Both salespeople said they were coarse, my husband says they are medium, the nursery manager says there is no coarse vermiculite this year… So I have decided to just go with what I’ve got. If [...]
Gardening with my 2 year old 2008-04-28 15:09:17 It turns out that gardening and my toddler go hand in hand. I spent the weekend planting annuals and weeding and my 2 year old loved helping. Only she actually helped! She did not pull a single flower and even pulled some weeds. Of course the biggest fascinations were the shovel, gloves, and dirt. [...]
searching for coarse vermiculite 2008-04-27 22:46:41 After calling every nursery within a decent driving radius in search of coarse Vermiculite and having no luck, one manager finally told me the manufacturer of all the vermiculite found locally didn’t make coarse this year. The official book says to get the coarse variety but the man at the nursery I talked to said everyone is [...] Read more:searching
Review: P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home Journal 2008-04-27 22:32:05 I bought this gardening journal a few years ago. At that point I knew next to nothing about gardening and brought the book home enchanted and motivated by the creativity it was sure to cause. However, what I really needed was a how-to-garden book. Several how-to books later, I have rediscovered this journal on a [...] Read more:Allen

Boxes have arrived 2008-04-25 17:52:56 Yesterday my square foot garden boxes arrived. I got these off of www.squarefootgarden.com along with a tomato tower and some water walls. I ordered the small 2×2 patio boxes for portability and because they can be placed on a table if needed. All New Square Foot Gardening, by Mel Bartholomew, has complete instructions for building [...] Read more:Boxes
Drip Water System 2008-05-06 18:24:32 Since I am well known for killing plants off by forgetting to water them, and I actually wanted my plants to live in my brand new SFG, hubby installed a drip watering system for me. It is attached to a timer and gives my plants the perfect amount of water. I’ve heard people complain that [...]

Strawberry & Rose Fever 2008-05-11 00:03:08 Maybe it’s because I’m in the fruit craving stage of my pregnancy but I’m starting to wish I could plant all my sfg boxes with strawberries! I have 5 squares already planted with them and 1 large container - and I’m looking for another one. I’d really like one like my Mom used to have [...]

SFG with all squares filled 2008-05-12 19:55:41 And here (finally) is my square foot garden - 4 2×2 boxes - with everything planted.
Planted are peas, beets, strawberries, spinach, lettuce, onions, parsley, and broccoli.
In front are tomato plants - they are now in an upside down tomato planter covered in plastic wrap.

Garden Update and Cool Tomato Planter 2008-05-14 13:43:10 It’s been a little chilly lately - not bad but definently jacket weather. I’ve been too lazy to try figuring out a cover for the squares I planted seeds in - beets & spinach - tried regular old plastic weighed down with rocks but it got too windy. Maybe I’ll just see what happens?
Here [...]

Hardening off seedlings 2008-05-16 12:43:14 In the All New Square Foot Gardening book it mentions “hardening off” indoor grown seedlings before transplanting them. I kind of ignored whatever this mysterious phrase meant in my haste to get my transplants in the ground while I could still bend … but I think I’m paying for it now. (See my post about [...]

Seedlings & Strawberries & Organizing my Squares 2008-05-19 00:45:56 The seeds I planted directly in square foot garden boxes for beets, Swiss chard and spinach are finally coming up!! Meanwhile, it’s been HOT outside. Tomorrow it is going to be almost in the 90’s then Wednesday will go back to normalish at 60 degrees. Been working on my garden while my 2 year old [...]

Growing strawberries 2008-05-21 01:29:26 Here is the picture of my recently planted strawberries. There are two different varieties here - I can’t remember what the ones on the left are but the ones on the right (with actual strawberries) are Ozark Beauty.
This just looks so good - it is still not all the way ripe though.
I want to get [...]

Rose Pictures & Upside Down Tomato Planter 2008-05-20 00:00:49 I went on a rose planting spree about the same time as my strawberry spree and here are the results, in this digitally altered picture. Why digitally altered? For some obscure (meaning I can’t remember) reason, lavender/mauve/purple roses don’t photograph true to color. So I photoshopped this picture because these babies are NOT pink! I’m [...]

Save the bees: what you can do 2008-05-23 00:00:26 By now, most everyone has heard of the bees dying off. Called “Colony Collapse Disorder”, no one is really exactly sure why bees are dissapearing, although viruses, parasites, and stress are possible reasons. (For more information about Colony Collapse Disorder see the news article and short video at )
Recently while I was hungrily [...]
Save the bees continued and more garden updates 2008-05-24 23:07:11 After going through my cupboard yesterday and finding nothing but imported honey I resolved to start buying local. I know local honey is available at the grocer - it’s just at a higher price. Do you buy local honey? If so, does it cost more?
Thanks to Jan for recommending African Blue Basil. It’s interesting the [...]

Bonsai trees in Florida and my SFG Strawberries 2008-05-26 23:45:31 Today while perusing the Gardening Directory Blotanical, I stumbled upon a post about bonsai trees, How to Get Started in Bonsai from the Matsu Bonsai gardening blog. I think like a lot of people I first learned of Bonsai by watching The Karate Kid - I can still here “Daniel-san” asking Mr. Miyagi what’s up [...]

Tomato dreams and I want another sfg box… 2008-05-28 23:11:05 Well I have quickly discovered how very out of space I am to grow everything I want to grow - namely tomatoes - everywhere I look I find yet another tasty tomato recipe - from this tasty recipe for Tomato
Risotto to salivating over the thought of ripe homegrown tomatoes sprinkled with salt.
I remember in [...]
My plants like stormy weather 2008-05-30 17:41:25 Tomorrow it’s supposed to be 80 degrees - very nice considering all the rain lately - but then, of course, the rest of the week will be raining and t-storms. I was impatient to go out in the most horrid of thunderstorms yesterday with my 2 year old - the shopping bug wouldn’t leave me [...]

Baby’s diggin in the dirt 2008-06-02 23:10:52 Yesterday I found one of my strawberry plant’s had died and my spinach has not grown - and it is now (finally) getting too hot for them to do good anyway - so I will probably just pull them up and put something else in.
My beets were doing good - until I became too focused [...]
