Between The Lines 2008-05-28 10:50:00 The mashup of military and surf isn't new. Yet each time I see it I pause. I suppose it's because the two worlds seem to be very far away from one another. I also pause because somehow it fits... and I'm not sure I can explain how... beyond the fact surfers are seekers and if they happen to be in the military that alone won't stop them from seeking. Being in the military doesn't stop a surfer from Read more:Lines
Sec. of Commerce: 25K letters 2008-05-30 00:46:00 Talk is cheap.Real live activism is priceless.Getting 10,000 people to send Arnold a note to urge him to prioritize California state parks and save Trestles was valuable.Having 3,500 people show up at the California Coastal Commission hearing was also valuable.Currently the Trestles fight has reached the Secretary of Commerce. So far 25,000 people have sent in their comments.Talk is cheap. Real ac
Surfrider's Farmers Market 2008-05-29 08:40:00 I believe in guerrilla marketing.I believe that since our lives are increasingly targeted by advertisements and solicitations to get people's attention, you need a new angle. It's not enough to smack someone upside the head with a advertisement or marketing pitch... today you need to hit them AND make them say "hmmm."It's in this spirit that I love this approach by our pals at Saatchi and Saatchi. Sand in the briefcase 2008-05-30 07:57:00 At least three times I've started to write a column, blog post or book with a working title "sand in the mac." My life has always had (I'm pleased to say) a blur between work and play. About a decade ago I was the Latin American manager for a tech company, and since my trips were extended multi stop endeavors through some notable regions... I'd sometimes travel with either a surfboard or a snowboa
Pierce Flynn podcast 2008-06-01 11:42:00 A gross oversimplification of Surfrider's early history could be...Tom Pratte, Glenn Hening and Lance Carson band together to fight first point Malibu (and win). This initiative created Surfrider Foundation.A handful of core activists, board members and staff win the second largest Clean Water Act suit in United States history against two pulp mills in Humboldt County, CA. This victory put us on t Read more:Pierce
Morning of the earth 2008-06-03 06:10:00 It's funny how we can thumb through magazines... page after page and never even pause. On the flip side there are images or paintings that not only make us pause but also drive something deep in us... a feeling, a smile... warmth. This photo does that for me. I'm a fan of blurred images or images with slightly obscured subject matter. They make me think. They make me connect. They make me smile.Ph Read more:Morning
McFetridge's wonderful whaling walls 2008-06-02 05:41:00 Geoff McFetridge is a maven. His dossier points back to time on a skateboard, directing the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal magazine and then being an innovator of Patagonia's water works. He's now morphing into a post-modern William Morris by taking on... wallpaper.I personally love this as I love anything that's slightly unexpected... whaley Ts are expected, whaley wallpaper aren't expected.Check out hi
Activism across the globe 2008-06-04 07:18:00 I remember the first time I saw a major brand in a language that made me wonder... it was the Coke logo in Hebrew. That image had an impact on me because it made me understand the flattening of the world.I'm not going to argue that a flat world is a good or a bad thing... I'll leave that to others.I'm going to argue that the world is in radical need of help, and we need to employ every tool, practi Read more:Activism
Swimming in pollution poll 2008-06-05 06:34:00 A week or so ago I paddled out at Swamis with my buddies Mike Matey and Alan Honadle. Truth be told the waves were tiny, ankle-slapping, early summer... perfect Swamis peelers. They were also probably polluted. It had rained less than 72 hours prior and honestly, that point wasn't registering with me at all. I simply wanted to get wet and go pretend I was David Nuuhiwa. Alan reminded me (after we h Read more:Swimming
The Sea is at Risk of Becoming Uninhabitable 2008-06-07 08:25:00 Below is an ad for Surfrider Europe by the clever creatives at Young & Rubicam Paris. When I look at this ad, I see a visual mash-up... octopus somewhere in a lush jungle, wait... that's not right. The copy suggests that the octopus is no longer in the oceans because they are inhabitable. We all react differently to ads like this. Some people might say "oh, those enviros... over-reaching again" Read more:Becoming
Great Wave of Kanagawa: Mashup 2008-06-09 07:06:00 I blogged a few months back about an image that has resided in my brain for decades, The Great
Wave of Kanagawa.Turns out Surfrider Europe did a mash up on this image for one of their recent ads. I absolutely love this kind of thing... taking something classic and tweaking it. Check out the trash coming off the lip of the wave.Perfect tweak. And if you're digging this wave as much as I am... perhap Read more:Mashup
93 victories as of 6/08 2008-06-08 19:51:00 I post our victories every month. If you want the reasoning behind this exercise, pop on over to this post "understanding victories at a glance." Here's this month's batch.West Los Angeles / Malibu Plastic Bag Ban in MalibuIn support of Heal The Bay's effort to address the problem of plastic bag litter in the marine environment, the West LA/Malibu Chapter successfully helped to convinced the Mali
Dick Baker, President of SIMA at the California Coastal Commission 2008-06-08 15:59:00 This is Dick Baker
's address to the CaliforniaCoastal
Commision at Del Mar a few months ago.Dick is President
of SIMA, a $7.2 billion dollar industry. I know, this is old news, but this is a good segment as he summarizes some stats around the surf industry's muscle which is fighting to Save Trestles in a massive way. Thanks Dick. You rock. Read more:Commission
Beachmap Wiki 2008-06-11 05:55:00 Grassroots efforts are wikis, that is they are efforts that rise and fall based on the collective value of their participants. You can take that statement as meaningless tech mumbo jumbo jargon or you can take a step back and try and get your head around the opportunity it presents.Anthony Lombardo who is a good friend of mine, built BeachMap as an experiment. We talked about the "enjoyment" side Read more:Wiki
How to rescue a beach... make it fun 2008-06-13 06:27:00 I once overheard someone say "sure the Surfrider crew can throw a killer party but what else do they do well?" That statement made me look at this organization differently... and move our culture toward being understood for what we do. On our home page you can literally see that we've had 93 coastal victories since 1/06. I encourage you to check 'em out.But the flip side of that person's comment i
Seafood, punk rock and the activist mashup 2008-06-15 07:15:00 Ok, so I've posted a few of these trash-infused seafood items (a la the fine chefs at Saatchi & Saatchi)... I've even shown the video of the activation. Little did I know that a few people in our chapter network would want to take this and run with it. They contacted me and asked me for something between permission and guidance. My words of wisdom back to them...Go.Tweak.Mutate.Act.I'm a firm

The word "smarmy" comes to mind 2008-06-16 16:30:00 Bribe? Buyoff? Payoff? Fix? Palm grease?Honestly... I'm searching for the right word and I can't seem to find it.It all just feels so darn... dirty. The TCA... upping the bar on their own questionable tactics have floated $350,000 in taxpayer funds to an Indian tribal faction to win support for the toll road. Trashy calendars 2008-06-18 20:00:00 We've all seen gratuitous calendars. And I know those kinds of calendars cause very different reactions with each of us.The one to the left takes the gratuitous idea and tweaks it in a new way.Surfrider Europe has pushed the boundaries for years. In case you think this is a sexist thing, I believe this is the first year they have featured women in their calendars. Their calendars in years past wer
Squandering instead of innovating 2008-06-25 08:03:00 We're running out of water in California. In fact we're in an official drought and yet we continue to water our plants with drinking water. We wash our driveways with drinking water and let drinking water go down our street drains and into the ocean. Precious and increasingly limited drinking water. To top things off we import drinking water from places as far away as Fiji.
Does that seem out of
Uninhabitable seas: Riffing on our mission 2008-06-24 08:25:00 This is another ad by the Y&R crew for Surfrider Europe. I can't get enough of these kinds of things because they speak to a piece of me that loves re-creating and riffing on ideas.
I love how one person's approach to a subject is so different than another person's approach.
That's the gist of the onramp idea: onramps are various ways for people to approach an idea and various ways for peopl
Skip Frye Andy Davis 2008-06-23 13:27:00 Does anyone draw lines on a wave like Skip Fry?
Rhetorical question.
Does anyone surf lines on a page the way that Andy Davis
does?
Um... no, nein, 否...

Sea of Trash (NYT) 2008-06-22 08:07:00 Sea of Trash
By Donavan Hohn, New York Times
Off Gore Point, where tide rips collide, the rolling swells rear up and steepen into whitecaps. Quiet with concentration, Chris Pallister decelerates from 15 knots to 8, strains to peer through a windshield blurry with spray, tightens his grip on the wheel and, like a skier negotiating moguls, coaxes his home-built boat, the Opus — aptly named for a
