Iwo Jima, potent/co-opted imagry and American green 2008-05-03 07:42:00 Time ran a cover with Iwo Jima
imagery recently. It caught some flack. The cover story explored the fact that the US must participate/lead the green revolution. It pointed out the massive challenge that global warming will be and compared it to wars fought in the past... and suggested that fighting (and winning) the global warming war will be a task that may well dwarf other wars America has fought. Then, almost as if on cue, a group challenged the use of the Iwo Jima imagery and the green cause overall. From my perspective both camps views make sense and like many metaphors... they end up getting all mucked up in comparison details. On one hand we all seek to position our arguments and our points with the most relevant, most powerful platform possible. This is why so much of communications ar Read more:American

My love for the ocean, surfing, art and cubism 2008-05-05 17:10:00 “My love for the ocean, surfing, art and cubism is what inspired me to create this image.”- Steve FawleyI just love that quote. I didn't think I'd ever see a quote related to waves that was so... encompassing. Anyone that links their love of surfing and the ocean to cubism is a friend of mine.It turns out this quote is related the trophy to the right. It will be given to leading brands and products in the surf industry at next weeks SIMA Image Awards.Kudos to Steve for creating this sculpture. Even more kudos for bringing in a pre-postmodern art lexicon into the world of surf.
Air car 2008-05-07 08:19:00 I dig small cars.I learned to drive in small European cars. Early generation SAABs, etc. Today I drive a Mini and love it. I can fit three boards... inside. Check this out...So what does this have to do with Surfrider? We've never seen a road that didn't lead to pollution as everything that ends up on the road usually gets washed off the road. If you live near the beach a lot of times that pollution ends up in the rivers and oceans. Thus I'm stoked about these new innovations... bring 'em on.What do you think? Is this a yawner or the beginning stages of something pretty cool.
Extreme 2008-05-09 07:49:00 "People always tell me not to be extreme. 'Be reasonable!' they say. But I never felt it did any good to be reasonable about anything in conservation, because what you give away will never come back - ever. When it comes to saving wilderness we cannot be extreme enough. To compromise is to lose."- Martin LittonIt's fascinating to see where one person draws the line of acceptability versus another. One person's actions may seem totally over-the-top to another... while yet another person will see those same actions and think they aren't committed enough.Another angle into this is that any given person will go to different lengths for different causes... we all have things that WE believe are important and, based on our higher level of commitment, will take on greater risk. I'm always amuse Read more:Extreme
Surfrider license plates... part deux 2008-05-08 16:47:00 Is it my imagination or does the east coast have this process down cold? I suppose there could be an argument for there being more states on the east coast than on the west coast.Regardless of how you look at this... it's pretty cool to see the movement spread onto new onramps.

85 victories since 1/06 2008-05-09 18:28:00 Surfrider Foundation FL May 2008 Clean Oceans Act in Florida. The Clean Oceans Act sets up a mechanism for gambling boats to stop dumping 44 million gallons of pureed, chlorinated waste into the ocean every year. It requires gambling boats to register with DEP, pay berth facilities for waste hauling or use an onboard “closed system” treatment, and report waste releases to DEP. In addition it petitions the federal government to prohibit dumping in federal waters. This campaign was spearheaded by the Sebastian Inlet Chapter with major support from the entire Florida Chapter Network. Junk across the ocean 2008-05-12 04:35:00 What includes 20,000 plastic bottles, a whole lotta school kids and an audacious goal?A junk raft of course.Actually it's a raft made out of 20,000 bottles, with the help of school kids and the goal of crossing the pacific ocean.
NJ passes ordinance against changing in public... good follow up to bombs on the beach 2008-05-11 09:31:00 I've lived in New Jersey twice in my life so I feel like I have some, valid leg to stand on when I say the following...What are they thinking?Township Commissioner Ralph H. Bayard, who introduced the ordinance
, said it was not anti-surfer. “We don’t want people walking around naked with a towel around them."Correct me if I'm wrong but if a person has a towel around them then... they aren't nak Read more:against
Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project 2008-05-13 04:52:00 We believe in onramps.Specifically, we believe that there should be initiatives that speak to us as individuals... as unique people with unique tastes and interests.I remember talking with TJ Marshall last year and hearing his summary of the event Barefoot
Wine did with the Surfrider crew in Miami, Florida. In short the event was oriented around restoring a beach. Volunteers took out invasive spec Read more:Beach

The value of open space in a down economy 2008-05-14 08:57:00 Central park has been estimated at having a value of $528,783,552,000. That's... more than five hundred billion. That's a "b" as in billion. That makes perfect sense to me. Perfect sense. When I lived in NYC there was a clear sense of the value of open space and parks. I lived in Brooklyn and we'd often go to hear free concerts in Prospect Park. I also spent many weekends and free time in Central P Read more:economy

California State Parks to remain open 2008-05-15 16:39:00 It looks like all the public commentary regarding Governor Schwarzenegger's plan to close 48 StateParks
mattered. The 48 State Parks slotted for closure will remain open. Nice.Obviously this call was a tough one to make and the related budget process will be anything but easy.On behalf of the millions of visitors to California
State Parks, thank you.More.State Parks finder. Some opinion.

Embrace reusable bottles via buying celeb's bottles 2008-05-19 08:22:00 I think this idea is rad. It's simple, scales wide and may be sticky.I like ways that reach out to net new people. I like tools that talk to those that haven't been educated regarding the horrible results of single use plastics... and this is one of those ideas.Set-up: (for more details on single-use plastics, read this)Americans add more than 30,000,000 plastic water bottles to landfills... every Read more:celeb
Plastic bags: Recycling Can Fix This, right? 2008-05-21 10:23:00 (from Reusablebags.com)Recycling
Can Fix This, Right?Wrong.Recycling has its place -- in fact, we offer bags made of recycled PET because we support sustainable paths for the world's overabundance of plastic. However, it's not the complete solution.Recycling rates for plastic bags are extremely low. Only 1 to 3% of plastic bags end up getting recycled. In addition, economics of recycling plastic bag Read more:Plastic
Ventura, Ca and ecosystem based management 2008-05-20 10:50:00 A few years back we learned that while our mission statement says "... protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches..." we'll fail if ALL we do is only focus on the beach and further out to sea.Unlike Vegas, what happens on land doesn't stay on land... it goes out to the oceans. The land and the sea are connected. I know, that seems painfully obvious... it's not. I know it's not as I'm gue Read more:Ventura
Live shell found (and exploded) on beach 2008-05-22 09:04:00 I've waxed on about the recent ordnances, shells and (spent) bombs brought onto the beach in New Jersey via a recent beach fill project. This mistake cost $21 million, closed the beaches and will wash away during the first few big storms.Well... it seems some fishermen found a German mine from WWII in Bridgwater Bay, United Kingdom. They believe the 10 x 2.5-foot mine was dropped during the war by
Big steps? 2008-05-23 19:15:00 I'm an optimist when I can talk myself into it.It feels like that's getting harder and harder. It feels like things are cycling faster and regions are developing at a quicker rate. Yet that pace of consumption and (many times) accompanied destruction doesn't have a simultaneous force for conservation and/or preservation. The equation seems off kilter... most of the time. The world seems out of bal Read more:steps
Why I podcast 2008-05-23 09:51:00 I podcast to share the gold.A few days ago I had breakfast with Julia Chunn. She was born and raised in San Diego, became smitten with the ocean while perched on the front of her dad's longboard as a kid, came up through the ranks of the San Diego chapter, went on to lead the San Diego chapter and is now moving to Australia to take the top slot at Surfrider Australia. Her story is a pretty cool to
