Reactionary Trades Don’t Work
2008-04-30 13:30:22
When the Lakers traded for Pau Gasol it was a bold statement to the rest of the Western Conference.  The Lakers meant business.  Some teams chose to virtually ignore the statement.  Others made desperate moves to try to keep up with the Joneses.  New Orleans, for example, basically traded Bobby Jackson for Bonzi Wells.  Knowing they had an elite PG in Chris Paul, they felt comfortable trading a backup PG for Wells, who often creates difficult matchups for defenses.  The Spurs simply added Kurt Thomas for a draft pick and some spare parts.  They are in the first category. In the latter category you have Phoenix and Dallas, who coincidentally were dealt their playoff death blows last night at the hands of San Antonio and New Orleans respectively.  Phoenix traded away Shawn Marion

How about those Hawks?
2008-04-29 12:30:31
OK, let’s face it.  Not many people would have predicted that Atlanta and Boston would even be playing Wednesday night, let alone playing a pivotal game in the series.  Maybe you figured the C’s would drop one in Atlanta and would wrap it up in Game 5 at home.  Not so fast sports fan.  The Hawks stumbled out of the gate, but after some homecooking they have more than got their footing.  They are playing with confidence.  They are playing with the best two players on the floor (Josh Smith and Joe Johnson) over the past two games.  Joe Johnson took over in Game 4 scoring 20 4th Quarter points.  Now, all of the sudden the pressure is on Boston.  If Atlanta can steal Game 5 in Boston, they would have two chances (one at home) to seal the deal and pull off the histori

Fantasy Sports Forum’s “Prey on the Vulnerable”
2008-05-01 12:20:09
The Fantasy Sports Forum , a fellow member of the Fantasy Players Network recently posted an interesting article that I am pleased to share with you.  It basically involves fleecing your fantasy baseball opposition, which is near and dear to my heart.  In reality I do not like to take advantage of people, but nothing warms the cockles of my heart like taking a fantasy opponent for a ride.  Naturally there is risk involved with these acquisitions because sometimes the players never right their ships, but they are calculated risks based on past history. Without further ado, I present to you The Fantasy Sports Forum’s ”Prey on the Vulnerable “. “We’re now a month into the baseball season and it’s time to scan the rosters of the teams in your league to find s

Fantasy Baseball Weekly Wonders Vol. 5

A look back at the past week in baseball to bring you the surprising stars.  Pitcher Greg Smith - He didn’t pick up a win, but in his 14 Innings of work he tallied a 1.93 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP.  He racked up 15 Strikeouts for good measure. Catcher Dioner Navarro - Tampa Bay’s Navarro went 6 for 17 last week (.353) with a Run, 2 RBIs, and a Walk.  Nothing special, but if you’re hurting at Catcher, at least he won’t destroy your Batting Average. Corner Infielder José Bautista - Pittsburgh’s Bautista went 8 for 24 (.333) with 6 Runs, a Double, 3 HRs, 7 RBI, and 2 Walks.  As an added bonus, in Yahoo leagues he qualifies as an OF as well. Joe Mauer Heats Up
2008-05-07 17:00:58
Photo courtesy of Icon SMI In 2006 Joe Mauer lit the league up to the tune of a Batting Crown worthy .347 average.  There was a lot of pressure from fans and local media for Joe to be more of a power hitter.   In part because he’s such a good hitter that we wanted to see more, and in part because typically #3 hitters hit HRs and drive in a ton of Runs.  He “struggled” last year hitting a very un-Joe Mauerlike .293.  He struck out almost as many times last year, 51, as he did in 2006, 54, despite playing in 31 fewer games.  That continued into the early part of this season.  He was again pressing early in the year hitting .238  with 5 strikouts as of April 14th in 12 Games.  Since then, though, he’s hitting .407 (24 for 59) with 13 Runs, 7 Doubles and 9

Are Streaks Overrated?
2008-05-07 15:05:30
Two of the most impressive individual streaks are Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak and Orel Hershiser’s 59 consecutive scoreless innings.  For their accomplishments they took home the 1941 MVP and the 1988 Cy Young Award.  However, were they the best that year?  You be the judge. Joe DiMaggio - 193 Hits in 541 At Bats (.357), 122 Runs, 43 Doubles, 11 Triples, 30 HRs, 125 RBI, 4 SB, 76 Walks, 13 Ks (wow), .440 On-base %, .643 Slugging %, 1.083 OPS Ted Williams - 185 Hits in 456 At Bats (.406), 135 Runs, 33 Doubles, 3 Triples, 37 HRs, 120 RBI, 2 SBs, 147 Walks, 27 Ks, .553 On-base %, .735 Slugging %, 1.287 OPS Yes, the Yankee Clipper had the streak and his team won the World Series, but Ted Williams numbers were simply amazing.  His batting average was the 19th hi

2001 NFL Draft Re-mix

Previously I teamed up with Bartolis, a friend of mine for the SportingNews world, to do a re-mix on the 2002 NFL draft.  I’m going to step out on my own to bring you the 2001 version. #1 Atlanta Falcons - LaDainian Tomlinson I can say without question that if the Falcons could get a mulligan, they would jump on LT quicker than you can say dogfight.  #2 Arizona Cardinals - Steve Hutchinson I know it seems a bit early for a Guard, but considering the success Shaun Alexander, Chester Taylor, and Adrian Peterson have had with him, Arizona would be wise to select the best Guard in the business. #3 Cleveland Browns - Richard Seymour They orginally took Gerald Warren, but they would be much happier with the results that Richard Seymour would give them. He, at times, has simply domina
