Donkey ears photos, which one? 2008-04-29 21:50:26 The thing you love about a donkey is their ears! I took photos
of our Daisy's ears and got two I really liked. Now the problem is, I can't decide which one I like best. They are very similar. The bottom photo gives you a hint of where her eye is, even though you don't see the eye. It also shows both of her ears. But there's some reason, I seem to like the top photo better.I wanted my photo of Daisy's ears to capture her softness, her fuzziness, her cute personality and the wonderful expression of her ears. The background color worked perfectly with what I wanted to convey..the colors matched the colors of Daisy, so they help to create a soft harmonious look.In the top photo the one ear is definitely the center of interest. I think that's why I like it best. What do you think? And why do Read more:Donkey
I Made a movie for you tube with our donkeys! 2008-04-27 13:50:32 Watch my donkey video on youtube.com.I can't believe I did this. I got the idea to record the donkeys talking to me. Then I decided if I did that, I should have some pictures to go along with it.So I added some photos, and some noise, from me and the donkeys, and put it all together.Hopefully, the link to you tube works and you can see my movie

Angora rabbit photo by Donna Ridgway 2008-04-19 14:38:47 Amidst photos of wildlife, mountains and buttes, we also found an angora rabbit, calmly cleaning his fur. I have to admit, this rabbit was in the town of Choteau, at the KOA campground. His colors against the colors of the rocks were beautiful. I loved they way his "warm" colors, interacted with the "cool" colors of the rocks. His soft living form, was another contrast against the hard surface of the stones. I thought this made for a great little photo.Donna

Photos of Rocky Mountain Front by Donna Ridgway 2008-04-19 13:53:25 I grew up looking at these mountains every day. They're part of me. There have been times during my life, when I lived where I couldn't see them. I never stopped longing for another glimpse of these mountains. Now I live my life in such a way, I can go to the mountains when I choose. It's the most wonderful freedom. I hope you like seeing these mountains that mean so much to me.Donna

Humorous Mule Photo by Donna Ridgway 2008-04-19 12:42:12 As if the spots on this mule weren't enough to see, he turned to look at me and stuck his tongue out. Like a naughty little boy.We took this photo yesterday, on our photo shoot along the Rocky Mountain Front. You never know what you'll find when you leave home and look for animals and scenery in Montana.Donna

"Lip Hanger" painting with horse who's lip is hanging. 2008-04-18 13:57:32 When I was a kid, my horse Lucky would take a nap. I'd see him out there in the field with his lip hanging. I'd sneak up on him and take a little pebble and stick it in his bottom lip. He'd wake up with a snort and flap his bottom lip until the pebble came out. I'd laugh like a fool.Last night, we sat here watching tv and Robert fell asleep in his chair. I decided since he wasn't talking to me for a bit, I'd go get my colored pencils and take part in the drawing challenge on the EAG forum. I went out to the studio, picked up a piece of canson paper, and grabbed a handful of pencils, without choosing my colors.Back in the house, I sat down in my chair and began to draw this image posted by Sheri Gordon for the drawing event this week.I was hurrying to see how much I'd get done in the al Read more:Hanger
Tail Wind, horse photo. 2008-04-12 22:31:59 Tail Wind is the last photo in this set.We went to a tool sale yesterday and these are a few of the photos we took along the way.Near Cascade, Mt is St Peter's Mission, or what's left of it. This rock wall was at one time part of the girl's school, built by the Catholic Church to educate Blackfoot children. Late 1800's. You can read about this mission and an exciting lady if you google Stagecoach Mary, Cascade, Mt.I especially loved the way this broken wall mimicked the shape of the hills in the background. We went looking for wagons to haul our art work in to shows, and found this turkey! He was so pretty when he fluffed out his feathers.Easy to see what this is! A Tail Wind! This horse was standing with his rear to the wind and I like the way his tail blew around. You'll see these ph
Cow Pictures 2008-04-09 13:48:10 Yesterday, we decided to go get wood from the junk pile at the local feedlot. Since the pickup wasn't running right, Robert decided to change the fuel filter before we left. As he was laying under the pickup, Daisy came along and untied his shoes. At one point, she had the shoe laces in her mouth and his foot about two feet up in the air. Of course by that time, Robert was laughing so hard, it wasn't easy to change the fuel filter.Daisy is one of our donkeys, if you aren't familiar with all our stories. She's more fun than a lot of pets, as she seems to spend a lot of her time "thinking". Mostly thinking of mischief!By the time the filter was changed, we had decided we should take the car and pull the horse trailer-getting two loads of wood instead of one. We weren't sure the picku Read more:Pictures
Montana photos 2008-04-07 11:21:03 The day after a snow fall, these Montana
horses are out searching for the prairie grass. They'll be so glad to realize the snow is going to turn the grass green! But for these late spring snow storms we've had, I don't think we'd have seen much green in Montana this coming summer. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you've enjoyed seeing these horses.Donna Ridgway Read more:photos
More Montana photos. 2008-04-07 10:47:40 A true harbinger of spring. When I was ranching, I loved grabbing one of these little guys to listen to them bawl lustily for their mom. They're very strong, you have your hands full when you get hold of them...you'd better be determined when you make the attempt.Of course, when they beller, their mom is breathing snot down your neck. So you tag them and vaccinate them as fast as you can. One of my happy memories of spring....We saw eagles circling and circling in the sky over a ridge. We stopped to see if we could tell what they were watching....no such luck. But while we sat there, this eagle got curious about us! He swooped down low and craned his neck toward us. This connection to a wild creature will stay with me for a long time, for as I looked up at him through my lens, he wa Read more:Montana

Montana Photos, My new website, wildlife, horses, scenery. 2008-04-07 09:56:30 I love taking photos of dogs in pickups. They exhibit all kinds of doggie behaviour. This one has such wistful longing for his master to return. He hates sitting there, guarding the truck, feeling self conscious. This is a very "doggie" moment, captured forever with the camera. The line these mule deer created on a hillside interested my creative mind. I liked their path in the snow, and the way their dark shapes followed it.This little group of mule deer, trotting through the snow was cute. I liked their single minded determination and sense of purpose.Echoes of the past...an abandoned grain drill. Here we go again, another version of the dog in the pickup. These crows almost got us killed. Montana photos, near Augusta. 2008-03-31 12:18:54 When we began yesterday's photo shoot, we started off on this road, the sign said it was West Simms Creek Road. We had no idea where it would take us, but figured we'd eventually end up on the highway that goes from Simms to Augusta
. As it happens, we were correct. This is a neat road, it takes you through miles of prairie. I love the patterns you can find in the grass and the clouds. You can see, we started out in sunshine, but this is where it began to snow. By this time, we were on the road to Sawmill Flats and had turned around and headed down the mountain. In this photo, I liked the way the warm colors on the rocks showed through the grey of the snow.Donna Ridgway Read more:Montana

Montana nature photo, storm on the mountain. 2008-03-31 10:16:35 In some of my photos below this post, you'll see horses covered in snow. This was the storm that snowed on them. We were high on the mountain watching the beginnings of the storm move in when I took this photo.I've spent hours alone in the mountains, watching storms come across the earth. I put on some Carhardts and my outback duster and sit under a big tree, watching the first of the snowflakes falling. There is no other quiet in the world like you own when you're in a place like this. Most people avoid being here at a time like this, so you aren't bothered by chatter. The animals have gone to shelter so you don't see much wildlife...you have the most wonderful alone there is.As a word of caution, I don't go unprepared into the mountains. Now that I have Robert to share these adventu Read more:Montana

Montana Nature photos, deer jumping. 2008-03-31 09:45:51 Imagine these little jumpers, one on either side of the large mirror in your living room! These fawns were 2007 babies, still following their mom, who had jumped the creek, then jumped the fence. As I was clicking away with my camera to capture the action, I caught one of them preparing to jump the creek and one preparing to jump the fence.I flipped the photo of the one jumping the fence so they faced each other. If you click on the photos
, you'll see a larger version. I had posted the fawn jumping the creek with my post yesterday, but decided these guys were so cute, they needed their very own post! So I edited yesterday's post, took the fawn out of the line up, and put him here. Here's mom, trying to coax her children across the creek...It's such a high to get out in the country to fi Read more:Montana
Montana nature photos. Wildlife, scenery. 2008-03-31 09:18:46 This pair of geese nest on this haystack each year. We look for them every spring. It was snowing hard and fast when we saw these horses. I can't wait to do some paintings of them. I liked the groupings of horses that occurred as they moved around the field. The wind was blowing and my hands were frozen by the time I decided I had enough photos
!We drove as far up Willow Creek as we could go. When the drifts got deep, we had to turn around and come back. As it began to snow really hard, we decided we'd better come back down off the mountain, but it certainly felt good to be there again, even if it was for a little while.Hope you enjoyed today's photo shoot as much as we did!Photos are for sale, with double mats and in a clear bag, for $40.Donna Ridgway Read more:Montana

Montana photo, west of Augusta. "Storm Coming In" 2008-03-31 09:01:39 This is one of the photos from yesterday that I especially liked. I want to be there....even if there isn't a horse in the picture. 2008-03-30 13:32:41 I am so restless today, I have itchy feet. I need to feel the mountains. I have not been in the trees since last spring, before the forest fires ruined our summer. This photo sums up how I'm feeling, you can see the mountain beckoning....I'm even thinking of Turkey Bob, living there near Willow Creek in his little house that's a work of art. He put the house together from "found items". These items are used in the most unusual and creative ways. We stumbled upon Turkey Bob quite by accident the day we were charged by an antelope and that was the very same day we pulled a baby antelope off a barbed wire fence and hopefully saved his life. He was so new, his umbilical cord was attached to his tummy. It was quite a thrill to be charged by the antelope mom, rescue the baby, meet Turkey Bob
Happy Horses 2008-03-30 12:39:30 11 years ago, I was painting what I called "HappyHorses
". I'm revisiting these horses in my mind, I keep coming back to them lately, wondering what else I can do with them. I had so much fun working with them. Part of what was fun, was designing the horses so they "interacted" like a herd of horses in real life. Then I put designs on the horses to lead your eye around through the herd. Similar to how you would feel if you were in the middle of this herd, trying to choose which horse you wanted to ride for the day.It was always a dream of mine, to have so many horses, I had to choose between them to decide who to ride each day! So when I'm in the midst of creating these horses, I think, "Which one would I choose today?"Another element of this design is the aspect of color. I think a

horses make me happy. I've always wanted one in my living room. I figured in my previous house, I'd have one in the living room, and put it on a gold pipe that lead to gears down in the basement. Then I'd ride the horse and my kids could sit on a seat downstairs and pedal so I could go up and down...just like on the carousel. I know my kids would have loved it. ha.Now I don't have a basement so I guess I won't try this idea any time soon.We spent a portion of this day removing the plumbing from my studio. We won't have running water to that house, because of Flood Control regulations. There isn't much room under it even though we still have the axles on the tr
The Horse Gift Mural 2008-03-26 19:41:17 I received my official welcome from the Horse

This is a very exciting project to be on, I love these mural mosaics.A few days ago, I had news my ACEO cards will be featured in the spring ACEO Magazine. I'm also very excited about that as I love those little aceo cards. I've had so much fun creating and selling those cards. My five chosen paintings are also at the Grand National Celebration of Western Art, and I'm a member of the Grand National Artist's Society.I'm also trying a new auction site called onlineauctions.com Funny thing, they even have reps who call you and help you determine the best way to sell on their auction site. If I can create a market there for my work, I'll be pleased as I'm not selling on eba
The Gun Show Saga 2008-03-16 11:34:56 We attended a gun show this weekend to sell our original art, prints and poems. I have never laughed so hard or had so much fun in ages. Now bear with me, while I tell parts of this story...it will all come together in the end....I'll start out with the story of the "black box".Robert and I love to "recycle". A nice way of saying we're died in the wool dumpster divers. We find the most amazing things in the dumps. Whenever we find one of these truly, incredibly, amazing, cast off items, we always comment, "Isn't this something? Now why would anyone throw that away!???"The "black box" was one of those finds. It's about one foot square. Pure black, made of wood and decorated with silver pieces that round out it's corners. It has a beautiful leather handle on the front with more silve

Carousel horse watercolor painting on canvas. 2008-03-08 10:20:17 The Carousel
HorseOn the outside, of a beautiful carousel horse, you see shiny paint, a wooden shell, glossy colors....but look deeply into their eyes and you will see the soul of a trapped horse, who longs to be free. He doesn't want to go round and round any longer. He wants to leap from the slick, circling platform onto green meadows and feel clean air sucking through his lungs. You don't know it, but at night, when the carousel shuts down, the hooves are freed from their pedestals, wood becomes living flesh, and the horse's wish is granted. When I was a child, and I visited the carousel with my grandparents, the horses knew I was "one of those who understood". They'd came to my house in the dead of night and I'd hear their impatient hooves outside my window. I could open the window a
Cow painting, watercolor, work in progress. 2008-03-07 07:53:31 Every time we go to get wood, I have to stop by the heifer pen at the feedlot. And this heifer is the reason why. She comes to greet us every single time. She entertains us by tilting her head, sticking her tongue up her nose, bucking and playing....always something to set her apart from the other cows! I think she wants to come home with us.I'm not finished with this painting yet, you can see it has a few bugs...but maybe by the end of today, it will look better.Who knows if there will be any more painting time though, for the gravel trucks will be rolling in here before very long. After that, we have to place railroad ties and create a level pad for the studio to sit upon. You'll never know how much I'm looking forward to having that studio finished up! I'm not so invisible as I thought I was. 2008-05-01 16:43:35 Hi Donna, I just spent the morning hours looking at your sight. Thank you for the inspiration to paint. I am new to watercolor painting. I am trying to learn from a book. I have messed around for a year. I keep thinking I need to take a class but I really don't want to. Time and travel is difficult to manage. So, I web searched horse watercolor and came across your site. OH THANK YOU. I read as I looked at how you took photos and then painted. I have tons of photos of my cows, horses, dogs, chickens and kittens. I kept telling myself to paint what I like. I have to learn to be more "free" with the color and brush strokes. NOT to be so exact on line. I had become frustrated and no longer had the desire to even try. Reading your messages really got me excited t Read more:invisible

Artist Resources 2008-05-01 15:50:19 I've discovered the most heavenly site for artists.... actually two of them. One is the empty easeland the other is watercolor online. So don't expect anything much out of me in the next couple of days, I'll be busy exploring. :) And learning. There are some sites I can go to, where the knowledge is so nicely presented, I can soak it in like a sponge. It doesn't seem like study, where you work hard to learn something, it's actually enjoyable! Both these sites were like that to me.On another note, yesterday, I was in a completely destructive mood, so I went out to the studio, which is now blocked and leveled, and tore a closet out of what was once the back bedroom. The hot water heater is in that room also, so I tore out the closet around it also. I used a big hammer and did lots of p Read more:Artist

WWAO Seascapes Showcase is online! 2008-05-01 21:39:08 Barbara Furlong , a member of World Wide Women Artists online
, is hosting the WWAO exhibit for the month of May. She chose a theme, Seascapes, for a title. I was having a brain lapse, and thought I had nothing to exhibit. At the last minute, I remembered our trip to Florida when we were driving semi.We were in Virginia, when we got an urgent message from our dispatcher to deadhead immediately to St Louis. We had doubts and questioned the orders but our dispatcher told us to go ahead and get to St Louis as fast as we possibly could. When we backed up to the dock, there was something like 14 trucks backed up beside us from the trucking company we were driving for. Rumor was, that another 12 or 13 trucks had just left the docks loaded with orange juice for Miami.Sure enough, we were loade
Transitions 2008-05-03 10:58:20 This isn't so much a painting as it is the exploration of an idea. There's one thing you learn when you've spent your life with animals. They get old way faster than humans do. In a lifetime of working and living with animals, you see so many of them leave this earth before you're ready to let go of them.I can not bear the thought of seeing their lifeless forms upon the ground, but I got to wondering what it must be like for them when they find themselves in another world. This horse is just beginning his new life and coming to the point of realizing things are different now.I myself had a taste of what it would be like to die and pass into another world. I very nearly took that trip and it was a wonderful experience. Very natural, not frightening...full of love.... It gave me a diff Read more:Transitions
Le Cadeau du Cheval, The Horse Gift 2008-05-11 17:28:44 This is the original panel I received for the next mural I'll be part of. I love the colors. What do you think I'll paint on here? What would you paint on it if it was yours?I need to keep within 20% of the color and value of what's here but at the same time, create my very own painting over the top of this.I had the panel here for two days, looking at it, studying it over, then I saw the image in there. The reason it came to me like it did, was because on our last photo shoot, I took a photo that exactly fits this image. I'll be changing colors on my horses and redesigning from afternoon to backlit sunset colors on the horses, but I hope it turns out as it nears completion.Donna Ridgway Read more:Horse
