What Does the Warmth of the Sun Do For You?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It's a glorious, warm, bright sunny day today here in Aberystwyth - as it has been for the past few days, and as it's predicted to be for the next few days (at least) too. I don't know about you but the sun makes me feel sooooooo good - much better than I feel on dull, grey days. So, what to do about those dull days so we can feel good all the time, on demand? Well, this will do it. Read the whole article through once, as I'll be asking you to close your eyes to do this. If you're not reading this on a laptop on a sunny beach somewhere, give yourself a few minutes off and go and have a wander in the sun. People like to take a simple walk or sit and relax, don't they? Okay, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Feel the positive energy flow into your body. Now close your eyes and feel how good you feel. Notice where in your body you feel best. It might be in your stomach, or your chest - wherever it is for you is good. Just notice that sunny, warm, great fe

What Would That Do For You
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here's another NLP Life Coaching question for you. Maybe you run a business and somewhere, in the back of your mind, you're running an "I can't get enough customers' pattern. You may not even be consciously aware of what you're doing but guess what: that pattern will be stopping you from getting more customers. So let's look at it another way: start asking yourself "what would having more customers do for me?" Think about that now. You can ask the same question over and over to get right to the core of your issue. (That's what we would do in an NLP Life Coaching session). "It would make my business more profitable" Cool. And what would that do for you? "I would make more money from work that I love doing" (You do love what you do, don't you?) Great. And what would having more money do for you? "Give me more freedom, more choices and more security" Wow. Get weaving then! So, what would achieving your goals do for you?

Believe!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This is all about one word - believe. The more I talk to people, coach clients, and take notice as other people's lives go on around me, it's the question of belief that comes back time and time again as the key issue. I'm not necessarily talking about belief in a higher power, although if that's what gets you moving then that's great. What I have in mind is setting a goal (whether formally with your coach, or informally with yourself) and really believing to your core that you will succeed in achieving that goal. I don't do this often but may I offer a personal example? Both Ting and myself decided it was time to declutter - we both love to buy and read books, and we realised the time had come to create some more space by letting those books we no longer required find a new home. We decided to sell them on the internet and those that didn't sell would go to a charity shop. Ting set about listing hers and, almost immediately, they began to sell. I listed mine

Do You Limit Yourself?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last week we considered how much could be achieved by believing totally in your desired outcome. In response I received a few e-mails all asking a similar question - was I saying that anything we believe in strongly enough would be achieved?Well, on its own, belief isn't sufficient for success. It's vital to take action, be focused, have goals and outcomes. Without these, believe is just a concept - and what we're interested in is results. The example I gave was listing books for sale on Amazon. Clearly if I'd never got around to listing the books I could never sell them. However much I believed they would sell, if no-one knew about them then obviously they just wouldn't sell in a million years. So what we give our attention to we take action on. When we take action we're on the way. And when we take the right action we succeed. So, how about self-limiting beliefs, which as promised is this week's theme. A self-limiting belief is one that stops you before you even begin

Is Your Stress Hiding Your Purpose?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The ultimate outcome of our NLP Coaching process is for you to find your purpose - something bigger than a set of goals or outcomes (although naturally we work on those along the way too) but a way of fitting your collection of goals into a bigger, brighter, wider picture - one that gives an underlying reason for all you do and aim to do.This is wonderful - but some clients are so stressed as they take their first steps that all thoughts of their purposeful path are hidden behind the day-to-day struggle. After all, if you're stressed about tomorrow morning's meeting, or whether there will be too much month left at the end of the money, it's tricky to find either the mental space, or the time in your day, to question and reach conclusions about how to live an authentic, purposeful life.As another example, when you start a business you'll be clear about why you want to do it. Soon, though, if you're not careful, your only goal is to get the VAT return completed on time. W

What Stops You?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
You know the pattern - you want to do something, achieve something, move forward in your life and every time you think about it the little voice inside your head says "I can't". You're placing an obstacle in your way (sometimes called a self-limiting belief). It might be a personal issue - "I can't get fit". Perhaps it's a creative matter - "I can't sing" Or maybe it's to do with your business - "I can't cold call" When coaching, and a client says she can't do something, I'll ask "what stops you?" Well, you can start to experience the power of coaching whenever you fall into that pattern by asking yourself "what's stopping me?" To stop yourself you must be putting something in your own way. I'm assured, for example, that everybody can sing - so what's stopping those of us who say we're tone deaf? Perhaps it's years of being told at school "you're just not musical", after you didn't take to the recorder nat

NLP in 'The Guardian' (UK)
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Interesting piece in 'The Guardian ' today by Jon Ronson, who attended the Paul McKenna Training NLP Practitioner course earlier this year.It gives a good flavour of the power of this event, and it includes an interview with Richard Bandler, as well as giving an idea of how Paul McKenna removed Ronson's phobia about something bad having happened to his family in his absence.Ronson does make the role of the assistants seem 'heavier' than they ever were on the Pracitioner or Master Practitioner course that I attended, but suggests himself the reason - that he was there as a journalist. These events don't seem as weird to me as he paints it - well, maybe that's because I tolerate all sorts of weirdness anyway!Still, any article that ends on this positive note is fine by me:"Three weeks pass. I don't have a single paranoid fantasy about something bad happening to my wife and son. And so I have to say, for all the weirdness, I become very grateful that Richard Bandler invented NLP an

Tomorrow we (myself and my partner Ting Munro) travel to London to attend the NLP Master Practitioner course being run by Paul McKenna Training. This will add another dimension to our NLP and life coaching practice - we train with the best to be the best, and I can't think of a better way of developing our NLP skills than training with Richard Bandler, Paul McKenna and John La Valle. If there's time and we have access to the net we may post about how it's all going during the next 11 days. If not, expect a full update when we're back in the second week of May.Prediction ... it's going to be amazing!

Middlescence = Lack of Purpose?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
According to an article in the 'Harvard Business Review', "many mid-career employees are working more, enjoying it less and looking for alternatives."The middlescent leaves work feeling "burned out, bottlenecked and bored."Could this be you? Well we certainly meet many clients, and potential clients, who are stressed and lacking in purpose, and on reflection, the 40+ age group is where many of these clients come from. The Western Mail today has a check list - is your answer 'yes' to some of these questions:Do you find your work unexciting and repetitive? Are you stressed, low on energy and struggling to cope?Is the impact of your job on society failing to measure up to your youthful ideals and ambitions? Are you disillusioned with your employer and do you resent the gap between the amount your boss is paid and your own salary?Do you have many commitments outside of work, with elderly parents and children to look after as well?Do you worry that you are going to have to work forever bec

InnerVision 6
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This week I'm thinking again about life purpose. I thought it was time to go to the root of the issue and ask the fundamental question: why find your purpose? The answer is very simple. When you have purpose you have drive. When you have drive, your desired outcomes actually do happen. And, even better, finding your purpose enables you to define the actions that lead to the achievement of your outcomes. Remember - 20% of your actions lead to 80% of your outcomes. So get the most important 20% of your actions right and all the rest will slot into place. As Tony Robbins puts it: "Success without fulfilment is failure" Knowing your purpose enables you to both be successful and have a deep sense of fulfilment. Relax for a moment and imagine how good that would feel. You can start on your path to purpose right now. Ask yourself: "What do I want?" Then ask: "Why do I want to do this?" Begin to let go of thoughts, feelings and ideas that no longer serve y

Can Wealth Lead You to a Better Life?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This week's newsletter is a little different. I want to alert you to a new book by a friend and colleague, David Scarlett. As you know, one of the ideas behind 'InnerVision' is that it contains real value, so I don't even use it to market our own products much, never mind other people! But David has a mission to touch 1 million souls AND raise £10,000 for his favourite charity - "Reach The Children', and I agreed to support him - and I didn't want to trouble you with a separate e-mail to add to the flood you probably already receive.David was kind enough to let me read a pre-release version of his new inspirational wealth book, "The Soul Millionaire'. The book is remarkable and I do highly recommend it if you're interested in the wealth aspect of your better life (and I've never met anyone who isn't, have you?) And if you move fast, you can receive some very generous bonuses - by ordering before midnight tomorrow, 14 July. One of the questions I would ask you,

How to be Confident
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When NLP co-creator Richard Bandler works with people who say they lack confidence, his first question is designed to locate the scope of the problem. "I just don't have any confidence" is a typical response. "Well you seem very confident about that" replies Bandler, which gets his client thinking about the particular circumstances in which they lack confidence. You see, when we tell ourselves we "lack confidence' we are generalising. We're taking a few - maybe just one - situations in which we don't feel confident, and applying them to our whole lives. Maybe you find job interviews tricky, and your lack of confidence casts a shadow over the real you. Maybe it's presentations that sap your confidence, or dealing with difficult people at work. Whatever you need a confidence boost about, remember you only need a boost for that one event: you are still a person that was born confident and is confident today. So perhaps you're now wondering how to

What Strategy Gets You Out Of Bed In The Morning?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When you awake in the morning what strategy do you use to actually get out of bed? For some people, the thought of all that needs doing that day propels them upright straight away and into the day. Others notice the comfort of the pillow, the warmth of the duvet, and decide just a few minutes more will be fine - well, won't make them too late anyway. This matters because if we're able to design and apply an effective strategy for getting up, we can do that for other areas of our lives too. And that means we can be successful at whatever we give our attention to.For example, today we were talking to a highly successful business man. We asked how he had become so successful and he said "it just fell into his lap" I commented "well, you must have had a strategy" and he then spoke in detail about a strategy he said doesn't exist. So, do you need a strategy for success? Where will you find one? Or have you already found your strategy (and perhaps not been aware of tha

Let Go and Trust
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When we want cash, we place a piece of plastic in a hole in the wall and tell the computer how much money we want. Millions of people do this every day. Have you ever thought about how much trust that simple transaction involves? We trust that the machine will give us the correct amount of money. We trust that our account will be debited with the money we asked for, no more, no less. We trust that the person in the queue behind us won't mug us for the money or for our card and pin number (and we trust ourselves to remember the pin). Yes, all this does sometimes go wrong - but rarely, and not to the point for most of us no longer to trust the system. And of course, the whole system of money is built on trust - if I have a piece of paper that's worth £10, it only actually is because we all agree that a note with a sketch of Charles Darwin on one side and the Queen on the other (plus all sorts of security features) is exchangeable to the value of £10. In the end,

If Not Now, When?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Do you have a dream that you think, or maybe believe, will become reality - if only you would take the action necessary to get things moving? Do you think about making a start, and then decide the time isn't right for whatever reason, and you'll do it later? So when is later? We can all find seemingly legitimate reasons for not starting on our dreams today, so they can become reality. Too busy; need to make more money first; it'll be easier when the kids have left home - if you recognise the theme of this article I'm sure you can fill in your own reason/s for not starting here:Clear about why you're not starting on your dream right now? Okay, now's the time to ask yourself "if not now, when?'The truth is the time will never be perfect to start on your dreams. If you have that mindset, you'll always be looking for a time when you're less busy and that time won't arrive. You'll always feel more comfortable if you've made a little more money first - an

No You Won't
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Sometimes we need to challenge ourselves or others to take action. We may have dreams, well-formed outcomes or goals - a definite plan for success - but we need to put that plan into action so that it lives and breathes and grows. When we carry out our plans there are parts of it that we really enjoy doing and parts that, while necessary, just aren't as exciting. We'll look in a future "InnerVision' at how to get some excitement into very task we do, but for now, that's think about how we can challenge ourselves to take those actions that we want to do, but never quite get there. For example, let's say you have decided to really sort out your clutter. This weekend you're going to have a big clear out of all those things you've purchased and never used, and all those clothes you'll never wear - maybe to make way for your winter wardrobe. The thing is, you told yourself you were going to do that last weekend too and it didn't actually happen. What w

InnerVision 26 - When Is It Tomorrow?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This week InnerVision is written by Ian in loving memory of his mother Ivy, who passed last Saturday. When Is It Tomorrow?Since the last InnerVision you've been challenging yourself to take action on all your "no you won't' items. Yes you have, and if your honest response now is "no I haven't', what will it take to get you moving? I'm mind reading now that some of you are thinking "I'll start tomorrow". Well, tomorrow is the future that arrives today isn't it?To wait for tomorrow is to wait for a time that may never arrive. Sometimes we allow ourselves to believe that we have the future - our tomorrows - all mapped out. Well sometimes the Universe has other plans for us.So, think about that task you're going to start tomorrow. Go inside yourself and feel how the prospect of starting makes you feel. Are you feeling excited, feeling good, making a widescreen technicolour movie of you really going for it (with impressive surround sound too?). Then tomo

Imagine No Possessions
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The John Lennon song "Imagine ' tends to polarise opinion. For some, it's one of the greatest songs ever written (that includes me) and, for others, it's mawkish idealistic twaddle. It's also a little over familiar - when was the last time you really listened to the lyrics? "Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can?" Well, one guy didn't have to make pictures about having no possessions - he literally had everything stolen when his removal van was nicked mid-move. Matt Gill wrote of his - at first sight dreadful - experience for The Guardian (follow the link to read the whole article). After the initial shock of everything going (and that's everything as in all his clothes, photos, entire music collection and stereo, bed, books, letters, TV and all else he owned including his passport, birth certificate and every other form of ID.) As he says, it's amazing how much we can accumulate in a couple of decades. So, game over? How do you start again

Patterns part 2
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last week I left you thinking, I hope. How many recurring patterns did you find?Could it be:You always end up arguing with the same person, unable or unwilling to see their point of view? You always end up broke regardless of the amount of money you start off with? You always find things to worry about? You find someone to laugh at rather than with? There is always a person or a group of people you look down on or hate? You often find yourself picking a fight? You are always looking for someone to "save' you?You are always looking for someone else to blame? You are continually looking for vengeance? The list is endless and it is damned uncomfortable when you do find your own pattern. (Isn't it funny how easy it is to pinpoint other people's?)So, what are you going to do now? You can keep it if that's what you want - just say "oh well that's me and I can't help it"Or - take that step and make a positive change.Look at your patterns one by one, and with honesty. Now go

Create a good experience
1970-01-01 00:59:59
At the WOMAD festival last weekend the atmosphere was friendly and laid back. There was more good music, interesting food and merchandise from around the world than it was possible to fully take in over three days. Okay, it was almost unbearably hot for the first couple of days but, hey, who needs perfection? While taking an extremely refreshing shower, a guy commented to me that it was a pity life couldn't be like this for the rest of the year.Ah, but it can, I told him. Notice the good feelings that you now have - notice in detail how good you feel and the pictures you have in your head. Hear those beautiful sounds of people at play and skilled musicians playing wonderful music. Use those feelings, pictures and sounds (and throw in the aromas of tasty food for good measure) and use them to make up your own reality, whatever situation you are in.Okay, what I actually said was not quite as detailed as that. Oh, and in case you're wondering I didn't anchor anything- there are lim

Masks
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Imagine each of us have a rucksack packed to the brim with all the masks we might need in any one day. You know the ones I mean: mother/father, wife/husband, daughter/son, sister/brother, friend, colleague, neighbour, shopper, lover, dog walker, grump - and now add to that all the plates you spin from hour to hour. What a weight! No wonder we suffer sore backs, aching shoulders and headaches. While you're sitting there reading this now drop your rucksack on the floor. Have a stretch. Enjoy the sense of relief.Take a few minutes to be with yourself. Imagine you're floating in water, in the air, you choose.Feel a gentle warmth wash over you as your muscles relax and a gentle smile touches your lips. Life supports you. You are happy being with you. You love and approve of yourself.Oooo that feels good. When you are ready, gently float back to the here and now. Isn't nice to know you have all of this available to you whenever you need it. Once a day, twice, three times a day,

Repeat patterns ... repeat patterns ...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Some years ago I lived next door to a young woman and her five year old daughter. Every time the little girl couldn't have what she wanted she would stamp, shout and refuse to move from wherever she was. The young woman quickly became exasperated and would throw her hands in the air, walk away only to return a few minutes later and give way to the child's demands.I happened upon them in the supermarket last week. The little girl, now a lovely woman, was having a heated discussion with her mother in the frozen foods section and, much to my astonishment, I saw the mother throw her hands in the air and walk away. Yes, you've guessed, she came back a few minutes later. The girl placed several items in the trolley. It's amazing how we can all slip into these patterns of behaviour without realizing what we are doing. We then repeat the program over and over again. How many times have you felt frustrated, despondent, even depressed about a situation in your life which just keeps recurri

InnerVision 27 - Your Past Need Not Create Your Future
1970-01-01 00:59:59
While we were on one of our recent journeys the train stopped in the countryside between stations for a while. The guard (or "train manager' as they now seem to be called) announced he don't know why we'd stopped and he'd try to find out.A woman sitting opposite commented that "the last time this happened we were stuck for an hour and a half" I couldn't resist replying "well, that doesn't mean we'll be stuck here for that sort of time now" She muttered something to the effect that she supposed I was right. You see, just because something happened in our past doesn't mean the same pattern will repeat in our future. Or rather - it doesn't have to repeat in the same way, unless we replay the same feelings and make the same pictures. We can feel bad if we want to, just as we can feel good if we want to. I wonder why anyone would choose to feel bad when they could just as easily feel good? It's just as easy to believe the train will be underway in the next m
