Roenick on the Late Late Show 2007-03-11 12:55:00 In case you missed Jeremy Roenick's appearance on the Late Late Show
, I'll post it for ya. Roenick gets interrupted by Chris Rock, who stops in on his way to 'nail' Tyra Banks. JR then talks about his plans to soon retire and about injuries.Charles Teljour, the cartoonist at CBC's website's The Instigator, took a little jab at JR recently:
Panthers are not quitting 2007-03-11 11:25:00 So let me get this straight: The hottest team in the East right now is the Florida Panthers
?! They are quietly sneaking up on the rest of the mid-lower Eastern Conference pack and are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and trail the 8th place Hurricanes by 4 points. Ever since the trade deadline on February 24, the Panthers have won 6 and lost 1. What is it about losing the likes of Gary Roberts and Todd Bertuzzi that struck a chord with this team and turned them into winners again? Was it just the awakening in the aftermath? Is it because they now have their backs against the wall and have 'nothing' to lose?In their past 7 games:- Olli Jokinen has 7 goals and 3 assists.- Martin Gelinas has 1 goal and 7 assists.- Chris Gratton has 3 goals and 4 assists.- Stephen Weiss has 3 goals and 4 assists.- Nathan Horton has 4 goals and 1 assist.- In the month of March, Eddie 'The Fossil' Belfour is 3-1, has a 1.99 GAA and a .935 save percentage.Where the hell were these guys all year? This is a rep Read more:not quitting
Smithers is Hockeyville 2007-03-13 16:19:00 Why should my hometown of Smithers BC be Hockeyville? Our website nearly says it all:1. For a town of only 5,000, we’ve produced nine NHL players. 2. We play hockey surrounded by the most beautiful scenery on earth, yet still prefer the inside of our arena (a converted 50-year-old aircraft hanger). 3. Two words: Watson Bros. 4. We hosted the world’s highest elevation women’s hockey game. 5. We’re home to Canada’s best outdoor rink (pictured below), according to Hockey Night in Canada 6. We have real winters and can skate outside seven months of the year 7. Getting a front row seat at the Oscars is easier than getting ice time in our arena. 8. Our passion for a game is reflected in our town’s passion for community spirit and support. 9. We’re home to hockey players 4 years old and 70 years old (in Smithers you start playing in diapers and finish playing wearing diapers). 10. Even Canada Post recognizes Smithers as Hockeyville (Want proof?). My opinionFrom what I saw last y
New widgets on site 2007-03-13 09:24:00 I have added 2 more widgets
to the right sidebar. The first is a YouTube widget that I have preset to display the top 40 YouTube searches under the work 'Canucks'. The second is a Viral Video feed that shows the top rated video searches from sites like Break.com, Metacafe, YouTube, Google Video, etc. These are sweet no doubt, but if you notice them slowing the loading of this site, please let me know, and I will adjust accordingly. Thanks.
Cam Ward will miss time due to injury 2007-03-13 08:21:00 Thanks to Temujin who pointed this out to me yesterday. We thought he was crazy for saying that Cam Ward may miss the rest of the season with a laceration above his left knee, caused by an errant skate in the 2-1 shootout loss to the Rangers on Sunday. But Jin has pointed out that D-Lee at Red and Black Hockey has a post up about it. Wow. This does not bode well for the Hurricanes' playoff hopes, even though they are saying that they are 100% confident in John Grahame, who will be the new #1 guy for now. The Canes are currently in 9th spot in the East. But let's not put a timetable on it on Ward. The News and Observer stated: Ward remained in the game until he could cover the puck and get a whistle. He then skated straight to the Carolina bench and walked to the dressing room. He said it took eight stitches to hold the muscle together and three more to close the wound."It actually didn't feel like that much, feel that serious, then I took a look at my knee and you could see something
Flames stand by former teammate Chris Simon 2007-03-12 23:43:00 Well at least some of the Flames
players are making a bit of sense on the ChrisSimon
matter. Sure, they don't agree with Simon's act, but they do realize an underlying issue."It's one thing to be a fiery guy, a hard worker, intense, a guy that crashes and bangs, but it's another thing to take advantage of guys," says Rhett Warrener. "You see a lot of that now -- guys exposed and in vulnerable positions, and they just eat that stuff up. Guys aren't protected at all by the league in that respect. Maybe they should worry about that stuff, too.""It's not the tough guys you have to worry about because they police themselves," says Darren McCarty. "It's the guys who play that pest role who aren't held accountable. All I can say is when I first came into the league, stuff like that didn't happen with those guys because the rules were a little different.""The league protects (players such as Hollweg) with the instigator rule," says Alex Tanguay. "If we have Eric Godard in the lineup Read more:teammate

Ducks 4 Canucks 2 2007-03-12 18:09:00 In a game where the 2 teams combined for 104 penalty minutes, the Canucks
lacked intensity for the most part, especially in the first period. They looked to be playing in slow motion, like they just woke up from a deep slumber. Although the shots were 10-10 in the first, the Ducks
built a 3-1 lead for themselves, and really didn't look back after that. The Canucks woke up in a sense after Corey Perry (Dustin Penner, actually) pushed Tommi Santala almost head-first into the boards, prompting Kevin Bieksa to rough up Penner a little. Not even a fucking penalty called on that play. To be honest though, a part of me hoped that Santala wouldn't return after that! I was drooling over the options of who Vigneault would call up from Manitoba in Santala's long term absence. Santala barely missed a shift. Damn! Santala still can't bury the biscuit either...even after 2 wide open net chances. Fucker. The rough stuff started after the hit on Santala, and the Nucks woke up. But it was too late.
Wild 3 Canucks 2 (OT) 2007-03-14 08:15:00 This was going to turn into a route. It almost did, with the Canucks
up 2-0 after 1 and outshooting the Wild 10-5 in the 1st period. Strangely enough, the Canucks got flukey goals from 2 players who have not scored much recently: Jan Bulis and Matt Cooke. Jeff Cowan turned into a playmaker with 2 assists! Ah yes, it was going so well. Then the Wild came out strong in the 2nd period and took over the game. The Canucks spent the majority of the 2nd and 3rd periods trying to hold off the Wild attack. Mikko Koivu made it 2-1 in the 2nd after a broken play defensively, as Keith Carney pressed behind the Canucks net and put a sweet backhand pass onto the stick of Koivu, who roofed it. Keith 'the playmaker' Carney. Where was this last year, Keith? In the 3rd, the Wild came out strong again and the Canucks sat back trying to protect the one-goal lead. It almost worked. But with only 4:24 left in the game, Brian Rolston stormed over the blueline and blew a shot past Luongo along the ice (whe
How the Carter has fallen! 2007-03-14 01:29:00 Anson Carter
just can't seem to find himself a home...anywhere. He was benched last Friday to make room for the returning Eric Cole and Ray Whitney, didn't play on Sunday, and doesn't seem to be playing tonight against Florida either. At least the Hurricanes are not paying alot of his $2.5 million salary! It seems that ever since Carter and his agent inflated his salary in the summer when they left Vancouver, expectations have swiftly risen for him, and he really has not found his game since. Do I feel bad for him? No. He should have stayed where the grass was greener for less 'green'. What will become of Carter in the offseason? Is any team going to bite on that salary? As long as there are enough stupid GM's out there, the answer is 'quite possibly.' Until then, Carter is going to perhaps ride the pine in Carolina until someone else gets hurt. Below are his stats in his first 5 games with Carolina. Yiee. It ain't pretty.
Canucks/Wild Preview 2007-03-13 19:52:00 First of all, center Nathan Smith has been called up from Manitoba today. Does that mean that the ever-so-crappy Tommi Santala is out? I bet Smith could hit an open net, couldn't he?How important is this game? The Canucks
(41-23-5) have to beat the Wild (39-24-7) tonight, otherwise the Wild will draw even with them for 1st spot in the Northwest Division. In the Canucks' favor, they do have a game in hand. But forget about that. Vancouver needs to rebound from their 4-2 loss to the Ducks on Sunday, a game where they failed to show up out of the gate and were more or less buried because of it. At least they showed resolve in that one and comraderie as the game went on.These 2 teams have played eachother 6 times this season, with the Wild winning 4 of those games. Vancouver won the last meeting in a shootout, and Jeff Cowan had 2 goals. The Canucks couldn't hold on to the 3-2 lead in that one, as Kim Jonsson tied it on the powerplay. The shootout went 6 rounds until Dan Sedin turned Ba Read more:Preview

Penguins not going anywhere 2007-03-13 17:29:00 TSN is reporting that the Penguins
are staying in Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached a deal on financing for a new arena that will keep the NHL team in Pittsburgh. The agreement - with city, county and state officials - was announced by Gov. Ed Rendell on Tuesday at the Pennsylvania Gaming Congress. He said money from the state's new slot machine parlors would help fund the arena. "This afternoon I am traveling to Pittsburgh, where we will announce that all three government entities (state, county, city) have agreed to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh for the next 30 years," Rendell said Tuesday. Finally, this is over.
Canucks/Blues Preview: Time to Rock! 2007-03-15 21:01:00 Well hopefully this game does not resemble the last time these 2 teams played on February 27, where the Blues
won 3-1. Just like the Canucks
' loss in their last game against the Wild, the Canucks lacked intesity in their loss to the Blues, who played superb despite losing Tkachuk and Guerin to trades. Tommi Santala played on the Sedin line because Pyatt was injured, and looked terrible out there. Doug Weight scored 2 third period goals to bury a lifeless Canucks team. The Blues are not to be taken lightly. They are 22-12-7 since Andy Murray took over on December 11. They gave the Flames a run for their money in their last game, coming back from 2 goals down in the 3rd, but lost in a shootout 5-4. And Lee Stempniak... 23 goals and 22 assists in 69 games this season, is red hot right now.Time for the Canucks to rock. I want to see 60 minutes of intensity, boys. Because if you don't, odds are the Wild are going to beat the Oilers tonight, and you will relinquish your top spot in the Nort Read more:Preview

Canucks' reaction to loss to Wild 2007-03-15 00:33:00 "We were too casual, I think, in the second," said Markus Naslund. "That's what got them back in the game. I thought we were controlling the game in the first period and played them the right way." "It was a good start," said Jeff Cowan. "Maybe we let up a little bit much, and we didn't keep going after them, I think we maybe let up a bit and let them come to us.""I thought we were putting decent pressure that forced them to take penalties," said Alain Vigneault. "When you do that, if your power play can at least generate a couple of chances, you might get a little bit of momentum. And we didn't get that momentum. The power play meant the difference in tonight's game. It could have gone either way. If our power play scores us a goal, it probably would have gone our way tonight."A powerplay that has gone 0-for-19 in the past 4 games. A powerplay goal would have shifted the momentum that the Wild held on to for the last 44 minutes of the game. I don't mind if the Canucks

Around the NHL 2007-03-14 20:34:00 BLUESBrad Boyes is feeling good in St. Lou. He has 6 points in his last 3 games. "I feel so good out there," said Boyes. "I have so much confidence back. Hasek 3:16 2007-03-14 20:16:00 Hasek 3:16 says: "I'm going to Wrestlemania!" Saw this bit on Kukla's, referring to an article at Detroit News.com. Since Wrestlemania 23 will be held in Detroit this year, Hasek will play against the Blue Jackets that day (April 1st), and then race to the Ford Field, the venue of the event. "I used to watch (wrestling) a lot more, but through the years, I've stopped a little bit," Hasek said. "But when I heard that Donald Trump was in WrestleMania, and may have to shave his head, I watched it the last few weeks."It's almost as if the stupid interviewer asked him if he knows that wrestling is fake: "You know everything is made up, everything is about the story, but if you go and have good seats, you see these big guys and they're good athletes," Hasek said. "They can jump, do flips -- I was amazed. They're huge, 6-foot-4, even 7-feet tall, and they're like gymnasts. It's a hard sport, I tell you."Hasek then stated that his faves were The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, and th
Bra Power is still alive 2007-03-17 00:54:00 John Bollwitt , who has mad photography skills, snapped this picture prior to attending the Canucks-Wild game. It seems that Bra-Power has not quite lost it's steam. But then again, Jeff Cowan has not scored a goal at home since the bra incident yet either. Perhaps playing time on the Sedin line may change that soon.
The Blues Brothers 2007-03-16 22:35:00 Sorry, I didn't recap last night's game. Myself and Captain Morgan had a great time after the game...too great of a time. I can't believe how one-sided it was through 2 periods. The Canucks had outshot the Blues
23-7 at that point and were up 2-0. But their inability to hold on to leads recently caught up with them again in the 3rd period. Concerning? A bit. I am not sure why they are going into panic mode in the 3rd period lately when the other team presses. Is it a bit of a confidence issue? Bottom line is that they got the job done in OT and gave a point to non-playoff team. Big deal. The Canucks are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, and still have top spot in the Northwest by one point, and no, the Oilers could not be spoilers last night against Minnesota. The Wild play the damned Coilers 2 more times to the Canucks' one. Jeff Cowan's promotion to the Sedin line was a complete bonus in every way. Cowan lit a fire under their asses, didn't he? The Brabarian didn't get any points, Read more:Brothers

The Dancing Brodeur 2007-03-16 21:50:00 I guess Marty thought this dance would distract the Penguins enough to make them lose. It didn't work. The Devils lost 3-0! OK I kid. Cornwall vs Smithers for Hockeyville 2007-03-15 23:08:00 Robert L from the Habs site Eyes on the Prize has written a great piece about the battle between our hometowns (Smithers and Cornwall

Red Wings ride into town 2007-03-17 22:04:00 If there are ever Canucks games I look forward to, it's the games against the hated Red Wings
. These games are rarely dull and full of competitive fire. I expect tonight's game to be the same. The Canucks have beat the Dead Wings twice this season in 3 games. The 2 wins were in Detroit. The Red Wings
beat the Canucks 3-2 at the Garage on November 14. I wonder if the continuing trend of the road team winning these games will continue.Detroit is going to be a handful. They have just come off of back to back wins against Nashville to take 1st spot in the Central. That was no small task.In those 2 games:-Datsyuk had 3 assists, and has 2 goals and 13 assists in a 9-game point streak.-Jiri Hudler has come alive, scoring the game winner in both games and recording 3 goals and 1 assist altogether.-Robert Lang had 1 goal and 3 assists.-Kyle Calder had 1 goal and 3 assists.Since January 26, the Wings are 15-3-3. They continue to roll even when Chris Osgood plays between the pipes, and especial
Naslund sits / Salo out 2007-03-19 00:08:00 Leave it to Alain Vigneault to speak his mind. When asked why Markus Naslund was not playing on the PP as much last night Vigneault said: "He wasn't playing well, it's as simple as that. I just go with the guys that are playing their best. He wasn't one of them." Zing! Nothing like calling out your captain! But I admire that about Vigneault. And letting your best players play more is something that was sorely lacking under the Crawford regime.Sammi Salo apparently tweaked his groin last night. I thought he was ill, because he sure looked pale when the camera showed a closer view of his face last night. Apparently the flu is going around the Nuck room because Lukas Krajicek is suffering from it as well. Sure didn't hurt his game did it?? So Salo will not make the trip to Edmonton, and as a result, Alex Edler has been called up from Manitoba.
North Bay Ontario is Hockeyville 2007-03-18 21:22:00 Gary Bettman announced North
Bay the winner after the Leafs-Habs game last night. Cornwall came in second. Way to go, Robert! North Bay gets $50,000 for arena upgrades, the pre-season NHL exhibition game between the New York Islanders and the Atlanta Thrashers on September 17, and the city will also be featured in a national one-hour CBC Television special to air in the fall. The community reached out to displaced Hurricane Katrina children by asking them to join their annual pond hockey tournament. North Bay embraced the unique initiative as sponsors paid for their flights, accommodations and meals during the three-day trip.I guess that really helped their cause. There really is much that I can say right now that won't sound like poor sportsmanship, so I will say congratulations to the city of North Bay. Canucks 4 Red Wings 1 2007-03-18 19:53:00 Now THAT is the Canucks
effort that has been lacking recently! The Canucks buried the Wings
early and held on to their lead by weathering a 3rd period storm and even got an empty net goal from Trevor Linden to seal the deal. The Canucks looked alot less chaotic in their own zone last night, especially in the 3rd period when Detroit came on and outshot them 14-6. When the Wings had a great chance to score, they were either stymied by Roberto Luongo, or just did not get the bounces, like the open net chance that went off Mattias Ohlund's skate. -there were too many penalties in this one. The Canucks went 0-for-9 (not good) and the Wings were 1-for-8. Our PK was pretty damned good, with even Brendan Morrison scoring a shorthanded tally...that was a great goal.-Cowan continued his strong play but his icetime suffered because of all the special teams involved.-Bryan Smolinski's wrap around goal was priceless. Smo finally got rewarded for his great play of late.-Niklas Lidstrom made some e Read more:Red Wings
Canucks / Oilers Preview 2007-03-19 20:21:00 A guy named Hangers posted at the Canucks
.com Forum that he is going to the Oilers
game tonight. He was wondering if anyone could give him an idea of what to put on a sign. The Forum members were quick to give suggestions, including:"Double D's aren't the only Cup Cowan's getting this year!""Stortini wears pink panties!""SALO - FINNISH MACINNIS." (Salo is not playing tonight)"GO RYAN SMYTH GO!!!""Who DOESN'T want to leave Edmonton? Even Gretzky didn't stick around, so stop crying""Whats the view like from below?""City of Losers.""you can't spell oilers without loser"If I could make up one, perhaps I'd say: "The only thing that's hot in Edmonton right now is Rachel Hunter!"or maybe: "Learn how to spell, Edmonton, it's 'C-O-I-L-E-R-S'!"So, what about tonight's game? Should be an absolute ass-kicking, right? Well hold on for a second. Let's not assume anything. What we will need to see from the Canucks again tonight is a consistent effort against a lousy team in a game follow Read more:Preview
