A joke!
2007-03-01 17:23:00
Here is a joke that was sent to me this morning from a friend in Edmonton:Two guys from Prince George die and wake up in hell. The next day the devil stops in to check on them andsees them dressed in parkas, mittens and toqueswarming themselves around the fire. The devil asks them, "What are you doing? Isn't it hotenough for you?"The two guys reply, "Well, you know, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for achance to warm up a little bit, eh."The devil decides that these two aren't miserable enoughand turns up the heat. The next morning he stops in again and there they are, still dressed in parkas, toques and mittens. The devil asksthem again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you guys feel it?"Again the two guys reply, "Well, like we told ya yesterday,we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh."This gets the devil a little steamed up and he decides to fixthese two guys. He cranks

Sens 2 Hurricanes 0: In point form
2007-03-01 05:09:00
- It's amazing how loose Ottawa looks right now. On the offensive attack, they looked like they were playing pond hockey. It looked that easy for them. Their passes were crisp and their speed game was impressive. Ah, it's so easy to be loose when you're winning! The Sens have won 8 of their last 9.-It was a different story for the Hurricanes . They looked out of sync and frustrated. Whenever they generated a decent scoring chance tonight, Ray Emery stoned them. The Canes are now 6-5-0 in their last 11, and are in danger of missing the playoffs. At the same time, the teams around them-the Leafs and Canadiens- don't appear to be in the mood to put together win streaks.- Speaking of Ray Emery, it appears that the Sens no longer have problems in goal. Emery looks absolutely confident in the Sens' net as the starting goalie. In 43 games this season, Emery has a 25-13-2 record. He ranks 12th in the league in GAA (2.51), 5th overall in save percentage (.919) and 4th with shutouts (5). I'

Janssen gets 3 game suspension
2007-03-03 21:56:00
The NHL ruled today that Devils' goon Cam Janssen will recieve a 3-game suspension for his hit on Tomas Kaberle last night. After reviewing the clip, it's pretty obvious that the hit was late. It was a hell of a hit, but Janssen's timing was way off. It is expected that Kaberle will miss 1-2 weeks with a head injury, as it seemed that Janssen hit Kaberle's head, and the Leafs' defenceman hit his head on the boards as well. Hats off to the Devils players who tapped their sticks on the ice after Kaberle was taken off on a stretcher. A big fuck you to Janssen for looking unremorseful. Of course, he was jawing at Tucker at the time. But hey, Janssen is a good tough guy to have on your team, but he really has the mental capacity if a peanut. The hit occured in the 2nd period. The Leafs were down 2-0 after 2 periods. Full marks to them for storming back through adversity in the 3rd. And the Leafs' defencemen picked up the slack especially in Kaberle's absence. Carlo Colaiacovo scored o

Altanta needs a #1 center?
2007-03-03 04:47:00
All season long I have kept griping about the Atlanta Thrashers not acquiring a decent number 1 center since Marc Savard departed last summer for Boston. On February 10th I laughed mockingly at the Thrashers for acquiring Eric Belanger from the Predators in exchange for Vitali Vishnevski. But I was wrong. Belanger struggled through his first 4 games with Atlanta, scoring only 1 goal. Since that 4-game drought, the 29-year-old has 3 goals and 4 assists in his past 5 games. Playing with Marian Hossa will do that to you, won't it? If Belanger keeps this up, he will surpass the totals of his career year in Los Angeles of 16 goals and 19 assists in 62 games with the Kings. He currently has 11 goals and 15 assists in 63 games this season. Imagine what he could do if he played a whole season with Hossa. He may be a nice sleeper pick for the pool next year!

Sid the Kid and Gary the Scary
2007-03-04 22:20:00
Gary the Scary meaning: Scary good! So let's just shift the spotlight off of Crosby for a second. Gary Roberts and his new linemates Erik Christensen and Michel Ouellet were dominant in the Pens come-from-behind victory over the Flyers today. Sure, Crosby buried the shootout clincher, and played a good game, generating alot of chances. But he was held off the scoresheet in the first 4 periods. It seems as though coach Michel Therrien has found a great line with Roberts, Christensen, and Ouellet. Roberts had 1 goal and 2 assists, Christensen had 2 goals, and also scored the winning goal in the shootout, and Ouellet had one assist. A combined 6 points on the Pens' 3 goals in regulation. Roberts was a physical force out there. His physical play drew penalties, opened up the ice, and created scoring opportunities. He's still playing like he's 30 years old! Unreal. He is of Chris Chelios-mold for durability.Roberts is one of the key ingredients, second to Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury of

Canucks/Wild Preview
2007-03-04 20:07:00
Season series: The Wild have won 4 and lost 2 to the Canucks this season. The last game that they played on February 14, Sami Salo was the overtime hero. That was also when the Canucks were red hot. But that has changed. The Canucks are not playing a full 60 minutes lately. They are lacking intensity and speed. That type of effort is not going to fly against the Wild. In fact, the Wild are going to beat these Nucks if Vancouver don't step it up and play at a higher level. This isn't Phoenix. Minnesota has no problem skating hard and being aggressive at a consistent level. I don't know what is going to motivate the Canucks tonight. Maybe Jeff Cowan should play on a scoring line. He has no problem showing intensity, and was a difference-maker last game against the Coyotes. My take:All that being said, the Wild are a division rival. The Canucks play better against division rivals, don't they? I think this one will be close, but the Wild will take it by a score of 2-1. Hope I'm wrong a

I believe two of these jersey concepts were created by a guy named Yak at the Canucks .com Forum. Nice work! I'm really liking the white one, and that logo should make a comeback! But the angry Johnny Canuck logo is sweet as well. There are a whole lot more concepts at the Forum. It's worth a look!

Josh Green out for 4-6 weeks
2007-03-04 04:29:00
From Canucks and Beyond: Green suffered a second-degree right knee sprain while the Coyotes lost winger Owen Nolan to a second-period shoulder injury.“He [Ballard] kind of submarined me a bit and it was kind of a dangerous play and nothing good can come out of that,” said Green, who will be sidelined four to six weeks. Well this is unfortunate. Green has been perhaps the Canucks' most consistent gritty player. Green plays hard nonstop, something the team has not been doing much of lately. So I guess the question now is: Who is going to replace Green? Please tell me it's not Tommi Santala! If Vigneault has abandoned hopes of centers Brad Moran and Brandon Reid cracking the Canucks' lineup again this season, perhaps we can get a look at Jason Jaffray, a 25 year-old winger who's leading the team in scoring.Maybe Lee Goren deserves another crack at the team. His point-a-game stats are impressive as well.Just not Santala!~ Don't do it, Vigneault! We'll find out tomorrow!(Stats are f

Temujin Spottings
2007-03-04 01:18:00
In recent news, the elusive Temujin of West Coast Chaos has been spotted raiding refrigerators for beer and leftovers. If you find this man in your house, do not approach him as he can be very dangerous, especially when cornered. It is currently unknown if he's had his rabies shots. This is the most recent picture, taken outside my house two days ago. He turned only to glare for a few seconds before scampering off into the darkness.DO NOT BE FOOLED BY HIS "PITY ME, I JUST HAD HERNIA SURGERY" LOOK!! IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT HE'S BITTEN SEVERAL AREA RESIDENTS AND EVEN HARASSED FAMILY PETS.The best thing we can do for this creature is to call pest control so they can tranquillize and release him back into his natural habitat. Though dangerous, he is a fragile character and has many fears. If you find yourself in his presence, arm yourself with a rubber band, raw vegetables, pocket Aces, Captain Morgans Spiced Rum, or a long tube that might resemble a catheter (any straw will do

Forsberg back to scoring
2007-03-04 00:36:00
It seems as though Peter Forsberg 's knack for putting up points has finally returned. He had 3 assists in the Predator's 6-3 whooping of Los Angeles this afternoon. Before today's game, Forsberg only had 1 goal and 2 assists in his first 5 games with Nashville. 3 points today gives him 6 points in 6 games. Amazing how one great game can alter stats and perception. Prior to checking NHL.com's boxscore of the Kings/Preds game, I was thinking about posting another Forsberg futility photoshop, comparing his points total to Scottie Upshall's stats. Scrap that idea.Looks like Peter the Great is finding his touch in Nashville...oh great.By the way, Upshall now has 4 points in 6 games with the Flyers, including 1 game winner.Despite Forsberg's offesive drought, the Predators were still 5-1 since acquiring him.

Not a Manitoba Moose
2007-03-06 02:31:00
This is a clip of a guy I know and work with named Darren Pearson. He gathered up the nerve to approach a moose in his yard and it turns out that the moose was pretty friendly. Offering 'her' an apple didn't hurt either. As much as I would love to do something this, as I love animals, it is definitely not recommended to feed wildlife. This moose could be friendly to Darren and then unpredictably hurt the next person she comes across. It's a cool clip, anyway. Here is the second (longer) video he posted on Youtube. Here is what happens when the moose just doesn't like you.Unfortunately, we too often see moose at the last minute while driving at night. I've hit 2 moose while driving in the past 5 years. The first one I 'knicked'. That was a calf that only scraped the mud off the side of my car because I skimmed the back of his leg. No harm done. Moose was fine. The second moose I hit was with my truck at 6:30 in the morning on the way to work. We both ended up in the ditch. After

Don't count Florida out quite yet
2007-03-05 17:51:00
Well, it's almost time to throw the white towel in on their season. It is a tall order to ask them to win over 80% of their last 16 games. The Panthers play the Thrashers 3 more times, and have lost all 5 games to Atlanta this season. Ding. They play the Hurricanes 3 more times as well. In 5 games against the Hurricanes this season, the Panthers have only won ONE. Ding.A glance at the standings (below) shows the Panthers are terrific at home and lousy on the road. They have 8 home games and 8 road games left. Ding.At about the same time last season, Florida won 11 of 13 games, including 7 in a row. But they finished the season 3 games over .500 and 7 points out of a playoff spot.On second thought, Florida is hooped. Count them out. They are doomed! This team has to quit stabbing itself in the foot and putting themselves out of contention earlier in the season.

Canucks 4 Wild 3 (SO): Holy Cowan!
2007-03-05 09:03:00
In a game that meant so much, the Canucks persevered and won a close one in the shootout over the Wild. A shootout that went 6 rounds. Thank Gad for Daniel Sedin's deking wizardry! (pictured)The Canucks came back from one-goal deficits twice. When they went up 3-2 after Jeff Cowan 's second goal of the night, they were shutting down the Wild 5-on-5. But when it came down to killing Bieksa's interference penalty in the 3rd, the Nucks looked lost and outmatched by Minnesota's passing speed. Kim Jonsson tied the affair with only 5.5 minutes left in regulation on the PP.- The Canucks showed the intensity that we have been waiting for over the past few games. They outshot the Wild 27-17 after 2 periods and looked to close this one out in regulation. They fell just short of that.- Jeff Cowan got more icetime tonight (14:49) after his great performance against the Coyotes a few games ago. He scored twice and was a dominant force out there tonight, playing with Morrison and Cooke. Forget L

Lightning come to GM Place: Nucks and Bolts
2007-03-06 19:00:00
Tonight's game is a rarity. The Lightning and Canucks have not played eachother for over 3 years. But both teams have a few things in common. The Nucks and Bolts are both in tight races to hold onto their top spots in their respective divisions. The Lightning have Atlanta breathing down their necks in the Southeast Division. The Canucks have held off both Calgary and Minnesota for top spot in the Northwest since February 10. Worthy of applause. The Lightning have 38 wins, the Canucks have 37.The Lightning are 11-3-2 since January 30. The Canucks are 8-1-1 since February 10.The differences between the two teams? The Canucks have a world-class goalie and the Bolts don't. Marc Denis struggled in his last outing in Florida, as the Panthers squashed them 6-2. The Canucks beat the Wild 4-3 in a super-emotional game in their last outing. So, what to expect? No damned idea. The Canucks will have to clog up the neutral zone and not give Lecavalier, St. Louis, Richards, and Prospal any chance t

Bra Power
2007-03-07 22:50:00
The script of Jeff Cowan's NHL story almost couldn't get any better than this. Cowan now has 5 goals (5 points) in his last 3 games, after going 52 games without. That is 38% of the Canucks' goals in those 3 games. Cowan attributes his offensive numbers to his increased ice time, yet his increased ice time is a reward from Vigneault for his strong play and offensive numbers. At the same time, Cowan was only on the ice for 10:24 last night, and still scored 2 goals. Suddenly, Vancouver fans are giving Cowan hero status for his superb play. The fans were chanting his name last night, giving him thunderous applause, and one fan threw her bra onto the ice after Cowan's second goal, which the referee removed from the ice with a stick. Comical! Isabella at Stick in Rink was at the game, and said this about the incident: I'm not hallucinating, and there really is a bra on the ice. See Mitchell and (I think) Henrik Sedin skate around it, wondering what to do. They look at each other. Henr

Canucks 5 Lightning 1
2007-03-07 07:51:00
The Canucks just won a game in near perfect fashion. They outshot the Lightning 28-17, out-hustled them, and out-chanced them. The Lightning had chances, but shot the puck wide more times than I can count. The Nucks on the other hand capitalized on their chances and got a couple of terrific breaks. Breaks that include Bryan Smolinski scoring a flukey one shorthanded on Lightning goalie Johan Holmqvist in the 3rd period. But let's focus on the one Canuck who deserves absolute praise: Jeff Cowan. He had 2 more goals tonight, his 4th and 5th goals in his last 3 games. The Holy Cowan is so admirable that he recieved chants from the GM Place crowd, and a bra was thrown onto the ice after his second goal with less than a minute left to play. Yeah, Cowan is becoming a cult figure in Vancouver after his recent hot streak, and I am loving it. It nearly brought a tear to my eye.At least the Canucks took one less penalty than Tampa did, and Tampa, for the most part, couldn't capitalize on the m

Canucks Coyotes Preview
2007-03-08 23:42:00
The Canucks begin a 3 game mini-road trip tonight in Phoenix, against a Coyotes team that has lost 3 in a row. This should be a walk in the park right? After killing the Lightning a couple nights ago, we should destroy the Dogs tonight, right?Absolutely not! The Canucks trend this season is to lose their aggressiveness after winning a huge game and/or not playing a full 60 minutes against non-playoff teams.Their record against cellar dwellers is is less than stellar, Keller. Excluding Edmonton, who the Canucks have had their way with this season, the Nucks have 14 wins and 9 losses against current non playoff teams. Out of those 23 games, 16 of them were 1-goal games.I don't know if the Canucks think that these lower teams are going to be a breeze, or if they don't prepare themselves mentally before these games. It took a 3rd period comeback for the Canucks to defeat the Coyotes on March 1. Phoenix youngster Bill Thomas made his presence felt that night. On a more positive note, that w

There are more and more videos being submitted for the Ultimate Canucks Fan search. In my opinion, they keep getting better and better. The following clip is called The Ultimate Sacrifice. A guy from Whistler walks and runs all the way to GM Place because his jeep won't start. Along with alot of beautiful scenery along the way, he runs into setbacks as well, including the biggest set back once he arrives at GM Place. Check it out. However, I think that this clip is the best yet. It is humorously done and really depicts the Ultimate Fan.

Canucks / Sharks Preview
2007-03-09 23:37:00
This is going to be a tough one for the Canucks . Both teams have 40 wins. Both goalies are either shooting for individual records. Luongo will try to set the Canucks' single season record for wins by a goaltender at 39 wins. Captain Kirk McLean had 38 wins. Evgeni Nabokov is chasing a shutout streak of 145 minutes and 7 seconds, a mark he set in 2003. Since allowing a goal with 6:10 left in the 3rd period in a loss to the Ducks on March 2, Nabby then shutout Dallas and Minnesota. Of course, he has not run into the streaky Jeff Cowan either. Cowan will look like he's lost complete control of the rubber, then kick it up to his stick and bury it. Let's see you stop that, Nabokov. hahaThe Sharks and Nucks have played eachother twice this season. San Jose won the first meeting 6-4 on October 13 and outshot the Nucks 37-26. But that was a Canuck team that was finding its identity. Their second meeting was a 3-1 win for the Canucks on January 28th. The Sharks outshot the Nucks badly again,

Canucks 4 Coyotes 2
2007-03-09 10:32:00
The Canucks came out and did exactly what they needed to tonight. They beat a non-playoff team handily, they played a good 60-minute game, and they took a few less penalties. The pressure they put on Phoenix in the 1st period and going up 3-0 was too much for them to handle. QUICK NOTES-Cowan the Bra-barian scored another goal tonight, extending his streak. But he took a mighty wallop from who I thought was Nick Boynton, but the picture shows it was Steve Reinprecht perhaps. Either way, it was a big hit, and I wonder if that will cool Cowan down now. A massive hit has a way of doing that. Cowan was pretty quiet after that.-Why didn't Pyatt take his penalty shot? Does he have any confidence in his own ability? Nice save by Cujo on Hank though, as Hank took Pyatt's shot.-Dany Sabourin looked pretty good tonight. He didn't have much of a chance on either goal he let in. A big plus to the Nucks' team defence tonight. They played great in front of Sabu.-The Sedin-Pyatt line looks limp a

Tribute To Luongo
2007-03-10 20:59:00
He capped off his 39th win with last nights victory over San Jose meaning that Kirk McLean no longer holds the franchise record for single season wins. There are 14 games to go still, and I can't see the Canucks slowing down. I think at the top of Luongo 's thank you list is Florida, and even if it isn't, it's at the top of mine!

Canucks 2 Sharks 1 (OT): Pyatt Riot
2007-03-10 20:15:00
Wow. What a game despite the fact that it was a low-scoring affair. I'll keep this in quick point form.-Cowan the Brabarian had 3 shots and no goals, so my prediction was close. But he showed alot of hustle still and could score again soon. Anyone else see the fan in the shark tank who had a bra tied around his head? Take note, Vancouver. -The Sedin-Pyatt line came alive as the game went on. We were cursing Pyatt for looking like a slug with 'cement hands' (as Hodge would say), earlier in the game. But then they turned it on, providing the offence that got the job done. Pyatt's goal was a beauty to the top shelf. It had Temujin exclaiming: "Pyatt Riot!!" Good times.-The Nazzy-Bulis-Smolinski line continues to improve, and I think we got something good coming here. Smolinski appears to gel the other 2 together.-The Canucks played with discipline! Only 4 penalties against to San Jose's 2. The Sharks tied it up on the PP on a goal from Marleau half way through the 3rd, but they never

-Luongo has lost both of his starts against the Ducks this season, back in November: a 6-0 loss, where he was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 9 shots, and a 2-1 loss at the end of November.-Teemu Selanne has not recorded a point in his last 2 games. It will be a season high for him if he is held pointless tonight.-If JS Giguere starts tonight: he is 2-0-1 against Vancouver this year, and has stopped 71 of 75 shots.-The Canucks have won 4 of their last 5 in Anaheim, including Sabourin's suprising win in February.-The Canucks have won 5 straight games.-The Ducks have won 4 straight games.-Chris Pronger has a broken bone in his toe and will probably play anyway. Someone slash that toe!-Sleek is predicting a 4-1 Ducks win, and will be personally attending this one. Simon says: "I get a 25 game suspension"
2007-03-11 20:25:00
From ESPN: The NHL hit back hard Sunday, suspending the rugged Islanders forward for a league-record 25 games. Simon will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs as punishment for his two-handed stick attack to the face of Ryan Hollweg of the New York Rangers in a 2-1 loss Thursday night. It really doesn't pay to be a repeat offender. This is the 6th time that Simon has been suspended. "I want to apologize to my team and Islanders fans everywhere," Simon said in a statement released Saturday night during the first game of the suspension . "My actions Thursday night played a major part in our team losing a crucial game. I also want to apologize to the National Hockey League for the damage I have caused this great game of ours."The Islanders will miss Simon's grit, and his role as a depth player. He had 10 goals and 27 points this season, but ironically, only 75 penalty minutes in those 67 games. That is on pace for his lowest PIM's per game in his career. Well, it was a mome
