Training
2008-04-26 21:52:00
I have found over the years that there is just one, simple, little, thing that will guarantee a happy relationship between your dog and yourself. That one little, simple thing is training. Sounds simple enough does it not. Then why is it that it never seems to work as well as promised. I think that usually we expect more from the process of training than what is visible right away. That and the fact that most of us simply do not understand our dogs. What makes them tick, and what makes them want to do the things they do. We have a bad habit of thinking our dogs are human, and try to treat them as such. Lord knows they certainly display human like qualities at times. What has worked best for me is to get some help. Now for me that usually means to read a book. there are a ton of qu

David and Goliath
2008-04-20 21:25:00
We just recently had a new air conditioner installed. While the technicians were here, I had the kids put up in their rooms. I know what it's like when your trying to complete something very tiring, and there are dogs crawling all over you. I had sympathy for the tech's, and did not want to subject them to this annoying element of having pets around. The kids were not very happy about it, and made sure that we knew. We also put the Bassets in the front yard, seeing as that the technicians would be working mostly inside the house and the back yard. Everything went great until it was time to let the kids out. I did not know it but the Technicians had opened the gate on the far side of the house from the back to front yard. Well I made sure the Bassets were in the back yard, and then let the

Summer Fun
2008-04-12 21:09:00
The kids love the summer weather. They get to spend so much time outside, running around, chasing each other, and then of course the meet and greet as people walk down the road. The Chi's seem to relish meeting new people, and seeing others that regularly walk down the street. They also seem to enjoy my mowing the lawn. Not necessarily as I'm doing it, but just afterward. They run out and role in the freshly cut grass, and seem to feast on the wet scraps. Sometimes it is funny, and then of course they try to bring it in the house, not so funny. Of course the first thing I have to do is pick up all their toys that inevitably get taken outside. I have tried to get Peanut to ride with me as I mow, but he won't have anything to do with it. None of them seem to enjoy the noise, but An

Part of the family
2008-04-06 20:40:00
The Chi's, are definitely part of our family. They are like children, always running, play and needing love. You have to care for them as you do children, and protect them from the dangers of the world the same as small children. There is one advantage over children though. They give unconditional love, with out judgement or reservation. We treat ours just as if they were kids. they get fed at regular times, and are set to a schedule to match ours. They receive love and attention from their parents just as all children should. They each have their own bedroom (kennel), some are shared some are not. That is decided by them of course, for some of them prefer to sleep alone while others have to have company. Each one of them has a special toy that is their favorite. They each have a

Chi's are feeling needy
2008-03-29 21:52:00
The kids are feeling a little needy this week. For some reason they are all competing for attention. It's not uncommon for one to be up on your lap getting a little love, and have another come jumping up trying to force their way into the situation. Tia of course is the most forward, being our little Diva, she always feels she has to be the center of attention. We have started calling her Sassy Butt, because she has taken to talking back and being quite vocal. Sable is the next most forceful Chi. She has no qualms about jumping up and shoving her nose up under your arm or hand to get attention. And god forbid you quit petting her, she will sit over on the side and start the most pitiful whine-growl you have ever heard. Sable's newest quirk is that every time Mom breaks out the hair s

Spring is here
2008-03-22 21:20:00
Well it is definitely spring, and the Chi's know it. I have to mow the lawn on a regular basis, and none of the kids like the mower. Of course the first thing that has to be done is to walk the yard and pick up all the toys they have taken outside to play with. They are not happy though when I jump on the mower and start it up. They promptly run inside and hide around mom until I'm done. I wish I could run inside and hide, because mowing the lawn is not one of my favorite chores. Naturally I live where you have to mow once a week, and later in the year twice a week.Tia and Peanut have taken turns keeping me company while I'm at the computer. They really like the drawer I set up, and think it is just for them. I originally set it up so I could put my feet up while I surfed the Net,

The trials of bad weather
2008-03-18 18:52:00
The kids are being a little hard to deal with today.  They are restless, and don't feel like going outside.  Who can blame them, we have gotten almost 6 inches of rain.  This brings up the unpleasant and sometimes unavoidable circumstances related to the weather .  The Chi's DO NOT LIKE RAIN, and will try everything possible to avoid going out in it.  At times you have to watch every move they make, to be sure they don't leave any little surprises for you.  In the cold weather you can put coats on them and they will be alright.  They still won't like it, but they will be more likely to do what they are supposed to do.  When it rains though, there is not much you can do.  Annie seems to be the only one who could care less.  She will run out

Activity has increased
2008-03-09 18:07:00
The Chi’s have been very active for the past couple of weeks. They seem to be getting into everything, and finding stuff outside that I have no idea where it came from. I am going to have to figure out a way to train them not to chew or eat stuff that we don’t give them. Our neighbors now have permanent visitors who have a full grown Rotty, and a Golden Retriever. The funny part is that our kids think they can order them around. The Rotty has been coming up to the corner where our two back yards and front yard meet. He starts barking at the little one. Promptly Annie, Sable and Babe will run over there to put him in his place. What I get a big kick out of is the reaction. The Rotty stops, cocks his head as if listening, and then backs up with his head down. I could swear ther

Finally a New Post
2008-02-29 22:37:00
First off, let me apologize for not posting as often as I think I should have. I really wanted to make at least a couple of posts a week, but this simply is not possible due to other activities I am currently involved with. I will start to make a post once a week, which is probably good for this blog. It’s not that I don’t have enough material; lord knows the kids keep us laughing. The problem is trying to figure out how to describe creatively what they do day in and day out. I do not want this blog to become boring or pestiferous. I believe I am going to start including information about care of the sweet little Chi’s we all love. For instance, I have recently learned that Chihuahuas are susceptible to a condition caused by a lack of fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6.

The Enduring Chihuahua
2008-02-21 16:04:00
Chihuahua’s are a very unique bread. For an animal that is so small, it’s amazing how they can be such an enduring dog. They seem to weave their way into your family and life. To illustrate this, let me see if can explain how I personally came to find them such wonderful dogs. Now to put this into perspective, not so long ago, my opinion of Chihuahua’s was by no means flattering. I had always thought they were an obnoxious noisy little dog that did not seem to have many redeeming qualities. When my wife brought our first Chihuahua home, Gizmo, I was so mad at her I did not talk to her for a couple of days. Before long though little Gizmo was doing what Chi’s do best, worming his way into my life. I found myself on a number of occasions, just giggling under my breath at his antics. B

Broken Record
2008-02-16 23:52:00
I have been pretty lax on posting here lately. Sometimes, I think that what the Chi’s are doing is not enough. I don’t want to sound like I am repeating the same stories over and over again. I thought for this post I would add some cool links for those of you who are Chihuahua Crazy. I have been checking out all kinds of neat places on the net. And found some real interesting places. And a few fun ones too.If you are into forums and message boards or groups check out this is a cool site for anything to do with Chihuahuas. They even allow listing or posting dogs for sale. That is one of the features I noticed about many of the groups and forums out there. They strictly forbid any kind of listing to sale puppies or adults. Many of them are geared toward rescue, which is very noble, you

Liver or Cheese
2008-02-14 18:58:00
I hope to have some good stuff for the weekend, The kids have been pretty active. For now I'm just going to post a joke my Sis sent me. Hope you get a laugh out of it, I know we did. It definately has Chihuatude!!!!Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time. The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, "The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go

Take the weather into account
2008-02-13 00:58:00
I am glad, for the sake of my dogs, that I am not back home right now. They are suffering some very fierce winter storms. I can remember what those were like. As a kid it meant you had to stay inside and entertain yourself. As an adult it meant some very cold bitter work. Because of the work I did back then, it always meant cold days where you had to dress in layers.Thinking about it now, I don’t think I would have had short hair dogs because of it. We would get 30 below temps on a regular basis, and winds at 75 MPH gusting to 90 and 100 all the time. You used to be able to count on the wind blowing for three days after any snowstorm. We did not get a large accumulation of snow, but would get very serious drifts. If you have pets in this weather , you have to take precautions, and keep th

Safety First

Chihuahua’s are small, and therefore require some attention while outside. I have recently seen a number of hawks flying around and hunting for mice. I suddenly realized that two of my dogs are small enough to be potential victims. I had heard in the past about small dogs being carried of by hawks, and wondered if it ever really happened. I searched the Internet, and found one such story. The following link is about a Chi that got carried off. -attacked-by-hawk.htm . I also found a very nice comprehensive description of Chihuahua’s on another site. have over the last few years, discovered that you have to Chihuahua safe your house. This is something like child proofing. You have to put things that they should not get into up, and keep them out of reach. They are naturally curious, so

Helpful Paws
2008-02-09 23:00:00
Never try to work on, or more specifically, under a vehicle in the yard with your Chi’s. You get more help than you want. I was changing the oil on the truck today, and had all of the Chi’s supervising. Of coarse Tia and Peanut felt they had to help, by taking the rage and playing with it. Annie just decided that my ears needed a good, very thorough cleaning. Babe thought I was down there so she could get on my chest and try to give kisses. Sable just sat there by the tire and barked at me like she was trying to tell me how to complete the job. Needless to say I was not very popular with the wife when she figured out how the dogs were getting so dirty.

Warm Days
2008-02-08 22:44:00
It was a beautiful day today. The kids spent as much time outside as possible. Babe likes to play a game with Destiny, the Red Heeler. They run up and down the fence, barking at each other as if they were going to tear each other apart. It is really harmless, but to the casual observer it can look vicious. It is amazing to me how many people are more afraid of Chihuahuas than larger dogs, at times it can be quite comical. The Chi’s can look very intimidating from the other side of the fence, baring their teeth and growling. As soon as a person enters the fence, they are all just happy go lucky, looking for someone to pet them. It seems that if your outside, they think they are supposed to guard and deter entry. But once inside, all is forgiven as long as you pet them.Annie exchanged her

Today was cold for the Chi’s; they try very hard to stay inside when it’s cold or wet. You would think they are afraid to get wet. I do understand the cold, most of them don’t have enough hair. At times you have to watch them to make sure they go outside to take care of business. Our two smallest are litter box trained. Peanut and Callie both use the litter box, I was amazed at this, but the breeder we got them from trained his dogs that way. The mothers then train the puppies. The rest of them are not interested in the litter box except maybe as a potential snack “Yuck”.Mai Tai, Our Bengal Snow Leopard, has decided that scaring the dogs is great fun. He hides around the corner between the recliner and the wall. This is close to the water bowl, and waits for one of the smaller d

The Race is On
2008-02-05 19:05:00
There is no peace in the house this eavening. Tia and Teco are running full tilt around the coffee table. First its Tia chasing Teco for a couple of rounds, then they turn around the other direction, and its Teco chasing Tia. This generally goes on for about 15 minutes, but they seem to have a lot of energy today. Peanut is sitting up on the couch watching from a safe distance. Its real cute, his little head moving and following the race. You can tell he wants to join in, but he knows he will probably get hurt. When they slow down, he jumps down and satrts pestering Tia. Peanut loves to chew on her hair right behind her shoulder. Tia will allow this for a short time, and then she starts biting his front legs. Then Peanut goes over to Babe, and starts to lick her around the face.

Our kids prefer the stuffed toys to all others. They love to throw them around and play keep away from each other. When we bring home a new toy, especially one with a sweaker in it, Babe claims it. She will keep the toy, gaurding it with her life until the sweaker is broken. Then once the sweaker quits working, its ok for the others to play with it. All toys are promptly taken outside, and strewn around the yard. Two or three times a day we have to go out a collect all the toys, and bring them back in. Whats funny is when we have two or three of the same toy, they all try to take each others. It's as if they believe the other dogs toy must be better, even though they look the same. We have a couple of ropes, but they just don't have any interest in them. For a while we had a bunch of mini

Seat Belts Required Please
2008-02-02 17:33:00
Say hello, and then a prayer to Sir Gizmo! He is our poster boy for travel kennels and seat belts. Unfortunately He was riding in the car with my wife when she had an accident. He was sitting in the passenger seat, when both airbags deployed. He received a sever back injury he was never able to recover from. We tried many things, and soon even the pain medicine quit working. Unfortunately we had to put him out of his missery. I know many people don't believe in this, but we felt it was the kindest thing we could do for him. So anytime you are transporting your pet in a car, please use a kennel and seat belt them in the back seat. Keep them as far away from the airbags as possible, just like you do with your kids.He was our handsome, proud daddy. He had a unique Chihuatude, in that he

Continuing the Introductions
2008-02-01 22:41:00
All right to continue with the introductions. Sable Moon is our beautiful red smooth coat girl. She has a very unusual chihuatude, being that she was at some point in her life, I believe, abused be a man. The reason I say this is that she is afraid of most men, and won’t let them get close to her. It took me a little more than a year to gain her trust on a limited basis. She now permits me to pet her when she comes to me, but I cannot go to her. Sable Moon is a Mama’s baby unlike anything you have ever seen. She climbs up on Mama, and starts to wiggle in under her armpit until she can force Moms arm up and shove herself in. At this time she demands attention, does not ask, demands. When Mama talks to her, she just starts squirming around and rolling over on her back, wiggling all over

Just a little Chihuatude
2008-02-01 16:42:00
Here I sit contemplating how I am going to manipulate this blog. After a quick moment I have resolved to do it in the style of the title, with Chihuatude. Meaning I'm just going to jump in and get topic rolling no matter what. I am constantly amazed at how courageous and faithful our kids are. They let us know if anyone is moving around anywhere near our yard. God save the big dog that comes close to the fence, because he will be informed in no uncertain terms who lives here. We also have two Basset Hounds, and a Red Healer, but the Chi's rule the domain through shear intensity of determination.Lets introduce the kids. Annie, who is the defacto queen of the house, and if anyone steps out of line, she will let them know. She is also the ultimate mother, running around cleaning everyones ea

Peanut has taken to letting us know as soon as the Mail Lady comes.  He will come running inside, just a whining like crazy.  It took a couple of days to figure out what exactly he was trying to tell us.  It was very funny, because naturally we thought something was wrong, and would go outside looking around to see what happened.  After checking to make sure that all the dog's were present and accounted for, and not hurt in any way, we would look around to see if we could figure it out.  It did not even dawn on us until about the third day of this that the Mail Lady had just come.  Finally we were watching one day, and there Peanut was sitting at the corner of the fence.  He was watching the Mail Lady down the street.  She would stop at each mail b

Flea and Tick Time
2008-05-11 19:36:00
Well it's that time of year again. Actually it has been that time of year for about a month and a half now. We have already gave our dog's the first flea and tick treatment of the summer. When we first moved down here to central Texas, we had all kinds of trouble with fleas. We had never experience this before. Fleas just did not survive at 10,000 foot elevation. Needless to say we had a lot to learn, and had to learn it quick. That first year, we ended up having to treat the house, yard, and the dogs and cats. We have learned quite a bit since then. The trick is to keep the pets treated before the real bad season starts, and then you will not have any problems in your house or yard. We use Advantix for dogs up to 10 lbs for the little ones, and up to 55 lbs for the bigger do
