Day 87 - Another weightloss approach
2008-05-29 14:06:00
We're both really enjoying our food at the moment. For lunch I have an egg salad and for dinner tonight am going to have lamb chops. Hazel is enjoying pasta and chicken and salad. I get my third compliment today too, when someone I haven't seen for a few weeks says that I have clearly lost weight. Heh! I'm not totally convinced myself that the compliment is down to true weight loss but rather my n

Day 89 - Need some air?
2008-05-31 12:12:00
This afternoon my mood drops and I'm at a loss what to do. I decide that music will help and go get my Ipod. I pick up the dog's lead, call him, and go off to the local park.I walk for an hour at a brisk pace with the dog running excitedly, running rings round me. I have my music loud and, you know what, it feels great. I am still getting used to the Ipod though and have to keep stopping myself fr

Day 91 - End of Week 13
2008-06-02 14:56:00
I'm starting out this week with optimism. Today starts, as is usual on a Monday, with our weigh-in. See how we did on our stats page. This week, I'll be focusing on the size of my evening meals. This is especially important as I am really busy at work and this means long hours at my desk. Hazel is enjoying her food and remains confident that she will stick to her rules.

Day 90 - Getting scientific
2008-06-01 16:26:00
Today, I make a breakthrough. I think.First, I start the day by catching up on my favourite blogs. I read a really interesting post by Vickie on Kickin' Carb Clutter. Essentially, she tries to get to the bottom of why people experience no weight loss, even when following very low carb diets. Apparently, she contends, calories DO count when you are following a low carb diet. I follow her link to Dr

Day 91 - Portion size
2008-06-03 15:02:00
I clean my teeth, go downstairs, and put left over curry in the microwave. Ping! Yes, I'm having curry for breakfast. "C" For "B". I thoroughly enjoy the warming effect, then it strikes me that I should have cleaned my teeth afterwards, and not before. Oh well, too late now - I've got to dash. A big day today. Too much to do and too little time. My drive into work is painfully slow. Rain is lashin

Day 94 - So excited
2008-06-06 13:41:00
I am so excited , I can't tell you. I hope I don't screw up before Monday's weigh-in. If not, I've got great news to tell. That said, this losing lark is pretty much an up and down adventure, isn't it? It occupies so much thinking time. Angst. And happiness. A total preoccupation. Now I'm counting calories as well as carbs, I'm experiencing something new: hunger. I am eating much less than I'm accu

Day 93 - Trade off
2008-06-05 12:32:00
Hmm.The only way that I can have some wine tonight is if I do 30 minutes of exercise. Or go without food, and just have the wine (hic!)If I don't, I go over my daily calorie limit. Something I'm not prepared to do. Bugger.PS Isn't this the strangest video you ever watched?....

Day 92 - Psst...
2008-06-04 17:45:00
Psst...I'll let you into a secret...my belly isn't pushing down my underpants. Ha!

Day 95 - Fragile
2008-06-07 09:44:00
A beautiful personal account. Hope this inspires you...

Day 96 - A weekend break
2008-06-09 13:28:00
We wake up to another gloriously sunny day on the Isle of Wight. Yesterday, we caught the ferry over, along with Sullen son and the dog. We're here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The dog has been fantastic, Sullen son has been....well sullen. Badly so. He starts on waking on Saturday morning. He refuses to get dressed. As the time rushes by, he insists that he'll get ready in a moment and won't

Day 98 - Eating less, moving more
2008-06-10 14:47:00
Hazel and I are on the same journey - we are just taking different paths. I'm focusing on eating less. Hazel is trying to move more.In fact, as a side effect from Hazel's efforts, she's building up a lovely tan. From all those country walks which she takes with the dog. I pity her friends. Normally they might ring and suggest a meet up over a coffee. Hazels says: "What a great idea! But let's go f

Day 97 - End of week 14
2008-06-09 14:27:00
YES!My calorie counting, and careful low carb choices this week have produced a great result for me. See our stats page.On top of that, I get another unsolicited comment at work on my weight loss. I don't see it yet in the mirror. But there's no reason to doubt the sincerity of people commenting. After all, its not like I'm trying to draw attention to myself - quite the opposite. Standing at the s

Day 102 - Father's day
2008-06-15 13:24:00
Today. its Sunday and its Father 's Day.Sullen son has never ever bought me a card or present. In fifteen years.I wake up early and go to the bathroom. As I leave, I see Sullen son waiting in the hallway. He is carrying a card, and a bottle of red wine.He says: "Sorry. Lost the envelope." And hands over the card and wine.I take them both and walk back into my bedroom. I quietly close the bedroom do

Day 102 - Another short break
2008-06-14 13:09:00
Hazel is REALLY excited.Today she flies out to our 2 bed villa in Fuerteventura with a friend for a 4 day break. The Mediterranean sun will do her a great deal of good. Its the first time though that she's been there without me and is feeling a little nervous. But I think she's looking great!

Day 101 - Friday the 13th
2008-06-13 13:02:00
Thank God its Friday !Who cares its Friday the 13th? Just get me a drink. The weekend is just beginning.

Day 100 - All day work-shop
2008-06-12 12:36:00
Today I'm locked up in a hotel conference centre. With the support from a member of my team, I'm running an all-day workshop. I'm very excited as we have someone from each part of the business represented. The first person arrives. I bound up to him with a wide smile on my face: "Oh hi! Great to meet you! I'm Roy and this is my colleague Tom. We're so pleased to meet you. How was your journey here

Day 99 - Work, work, work
2008-06-11 12:20:00
Hi everyone!Sorry I'm behind posting this week. I think I mentioned that my department is merging with another? Well, some of the deadlines for analysing what everyone does, drawing up the new organisation, and writing the job profiles have been impossible. And my boss has been in the States on business which means I'm extra busy. Well! Time to stop moaning. And to start blogging!Weight wise, I'm

Day 103 - Food choices
2008-06-16 14:37:00
I almost start a riot in the staff restaurant at lunchtime. I am standing at the salad bar, with 3 stick-insect girls standing beside me. As I reach for my third hard boiled egg, there's a sharp intake of breath and an outburst of giggles. I swear that if I'd gone for a fourth, one of them would have slapped the back of my hand with a serving spoon. I look at their trays, and then back at mine. Th

Day 105 - The no food diet
2008-06-18 15:26:00
Calorie counting is definitely the right way forward for Hazel and myself. You might remember than my interest in calorie control stemmed from this article. Dr. Eades has now followed this up with a second article. In order to keep below my limit, I have even skipped a meal. After all, where's the harm in limiting myself for a few hours? The worse I can feel is a few hunger pangs which, often as

Just a quickie!
2008-07-01 10:16:00
Hi folks!Yes, Hazel and I are still in the land of the living! There's a very practical explanation for not blogging over the past week. Picture the scene... I've got home from work. I'm sitting on the couch, just getting comfortable for an evening on the Internet. Hazel is in the kitchen watching TV as she potters about. Sullen son is upstairs. My laptop is on the arm of the couch, and sitting on

Day 111 - End of week 16
2008-06-23 13:08:00
Oh dear. I well and truly fell off the weight-loss wagon this week, didn't I? I had three meals with carbs and knocked myself out of ketosis. The result is a 3 pound weight gain. Yep, you read that right. I not only fell off, I rolled down the hill, through brambles and stinging nettles, grazed my elbow and knees, and got a black eye. Thank goodness I didn't break a leg. Still, I'm not beating mys

Day 110 - Couch potato time
2008-06-22 12:02:00
We're all up Sunday morning relatively early.I'm just resting on the sofa with a cup of coffee when Hazel says she's off to meet a friend for a walk. I nod 'okay' and she's off with the dog in tow. I flick through the channels and decide to watch a property make-over programme. Its in Canada. It has absolutely no connection with my life. But I sit through it. By that, I mean I lie full length on t

Day 109 - Lickingly good
2008-06-21 06:28:00
MMMM. It smells lovely. I have just cooked a ham and cheese omelet for breakfast. I fold it out onto my plate just as Hazel appears."That looks good. Is that for me?" she asks."No," I reply. "Its mine. And I'm going to enjoy it!" I smack my lips and reach for my knife and fork."Did you wash the pan then?"Oh oh.I look at Hazel: "What do you you mean 'Did you wash the pan then?' No, I didn't wash th

Day 108 - Hazel's back!
2008-06-20 16:55:00
Its 3.00 am and I'm awoken by the taxi's purring engine outside. There's a shriek of laughter, a shout 'Goodbye!' and the sound of the key in the front door. Hazel's back!My alarm is set for 5.00 so I creep downstairs, say hello and tell Hazel I need to go back and get the rest of my sleep - I've a long day ahead. She is excited and tanned. Later, when I get home from work, Hazel is still grinning

Day 123 - Don't worry, be happy!
2008-07-05 12:45:00
I've sent off my insurance claim. I hope it will be alright. Being without a computer has meant that I haven't been thinking about my weight the whole time. What I mean is that I haven't been able to record my progress and I haven't been able to catch up on blogs. In some respects, its been quite liberating. I haven't lost focus. Neither has Hazel. But I haven't been jumping on the scales every da

Day 150 - Coping with reality
2008-08-01 12:52:00
This amused me. Until I rubbed my double chin and realised once again that it will most likely be the last area where I'll lose the fat. I'm so envious of fat people who have thin faces. I had a fat face even when I had a skinny body. That was some time ago.

Day 149 - Home alone
2008-07-31 13:05:00
I have a detailed report to write for work so I decide to work from home today. It proves to be a good decision as I find that I'm hardly disturbed on the phone. Hazel is at work. The dog is upstairs ignoring me. As I work on my laptop, I sip water and finish off the chicken drumsticks for breakfast and lunch. Although I still find them convenient, the novelty has worn off and I don't really enjoy

Day 148 - Lunch time?
2008-07-30 13:38:00
This is my third day back on track. And I'm feeling much better. Far less bloated. Breakfast is 4 chicken legs which I can munch in the car on the way to the office.I have a long meeting. We start at 1000 am. At 1pm my colleague asks if I want to break for lunch. I say "No, let's press on, shall we?" We continue. At 1.30, my colleague asks: "Do you want a coffee. And a biscuit?" I reply "No!" At 2
