Day 60 - Nutty
2008-05-01 15:02:00
Mmm.I'll just have one. Oh go on. Maybe a couple. Mmm. These mixed nuts are delicious. Err. yep, just one more. Or two. These brazils are great. Love the combination. HEY! HAZEL! WHAT TIME ARE WE EATING? Erm. Look a cashew! I'll try that. Niiiice. Almond? Not bad. Another almond. Even better. HAZE! WHAT ARE WE HAVING? Oh hum. Its not ready. How many carbs in this pack? 4.8g per 100ml. Wow! The peanuts I ate yesterday were 11g per 100ml. I can eat 3 times as many. But I won't. Just one more. Oh! I haven't tried the walnuts. I haven't had walnuts for ages. Mmm. Tasty. You know what this bag is really good. I think I'll have another brazil. I really like brazils. And almonds. I must tell Hazel. HUN! THESE NUTS ARE GREAT. MUCH BETTER THAN THE OTHER ONES. Hazel walks in, glances at the nutritio

Day 61 - Moody
2008-05-02 15:29:00
We both have a great day carb-wise but Hazel is perturbed. I suspect the daily furtive jump onto the scales isn't fantastic good news. We have a long weekend ahead (We don't have to go back to work until Tuesday next week.) Hooray! But we've no free time all by ourselves. We have accepted too many invitations for lunch out! When I get home, we snap at each other. Then I see this joke which makes me laugh out loud:"My husband, being unhappy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the other day so he would be able to monitor my moods. We've discovered that when I'm in a good mood, it turns green and when I'm in a bad mood, it leaves a big f**kin' red mark on his forehead. Maybe next time he'll buy me a diamond."

Day 64 - End of Week 9
2008-05-05 12:32:00
Today is a holiday so no need to go to work. In the excitement, we almost forget that its also our weigh-in day. You can take a look at how we have done on our stats page but I wouldn't bother. You won't find anything there to shout about. At lunchtime, we meet up with friends whom we haven't seen for ages. We eat just before we leave as our plan is not to join them for lunch, but just to have a drink with them. As we sit down, and I am passed a menu, I begin to explain that we won't be eating with them. Hazel catches my eye and then says in quite a loud voice: "Oh. Silly. Course we'll have something. Let me have that menu, dear." My eyes are like saucers. What the hell is Hazel playing at? I think I'm in the twilight zone and I've been whisked into carb city. "MMM. What shall I have?" Haz

Day 63 - Dinner out
2008-05-04 17:18:00
We enjoy a lovely late lie-in. As I potter about making breakfast, Hazel stares around the kitchen and tuts to herself. The shopping bags from yesterday are still there, unpacked. Yesterday's crockery can't be loaded into the dishwasher because its full and needs emptying. The piles of cardboard packets, newspapers and plastic bottles block the door to the garden because they haven't been put out into the recycling boxes. I treat this all like a fun assault course to navigate around as I cook. I'm not worried. Hazel looks livid with me. Not livid enough though I notice not to eat my scrabble eggs and smoked salmon. How come its me who has to do it, anyway? When we married I remember the vows said: "I promise to love, honour and cherish". I said nothing about emptying the dishwasher. Now tha

Day 62 - Fun times
2008-05-03 17:02:00
Having had no alcohol all week, last night we both have wine. Lots of it. Sullen son is out for the evening at a teenagers night club. He returns with a friend close to midnight. Only I'm asleep on the couch, with an empty glass next to me, wearing just my underpants. When I'm fully awake and realise the situation I grab on some pajamas and busy myself by preparing a bed for our unexpected guest. Once I'm sure that Sullen son and friend are settled, I head off to bed, mumbling something about needing to cut down my drinking at the weekend. Its Saturday. Great! The day begins as expected. Both lying in bed wondering if we are waking up to headaches. Nope. Seems okay. Even better. Hazel lists the chores she wants me to do today. I inwardly groan. Its supposed to be a holiday weekend. Not a ch

Day 65 - Renewed commitment
2008-05-06 16:09:00
I really don't want to lose weight this slowly. To hold myself accountable, I'm posting my daily record. Consider it a bit like a school report. Get your red pen out and send me to detention if its needed. Do shout out if I'm way off beam on any of our food, liquid or exercise choices! Hazel tends to have a different breakfast and lunch as she's at home most days, and prefers to measure how many steps she has taken daily. My report card for Tuesday:Breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggs; 3 small roasted chicken thighsLunch: 1 packet of pork rinds (1 carb total)Dinner: 2 lamb steaks with cauli-mashWater: 3 litresAlcohol: noneExercise: Swim - 10 lengths of the pool.See a great tv programme last night on BBC called Gavin and Stacey. In this first episode, Gavin sits down to a meal with his mum and dad.

My report card for Thursday:Breakfast: 3 sausages (1.8 carbs total)Lunch: Salad with pieces of ham, cheese, and chicken with mayonnaiseDinner: 4 pork chops with ratatouilleWater: 3 litresAlcohol: noneExercise: Swim: 16 lengths.Oh my god. Am I noticing the difference in my water intake. I'm carrying a 1.5 litre water bottle which I replenish during the day at the office. This morning I am driving into work. The sun is shining. As is becoming an annoying regularity the traffic slows to a snail's pace. I look to my left. The guy in the black Audi is eating a cream filled doughnut. He's oblivious to me watching. The cream is oozing out. I watch him devour the whole cake and then lick his fingers. One by one. Its funny really - cars are like gold fish bowls: you can see everything but everyone

No time to think. Or eat. Hazel rings at the start of the day and tells me she's had enough of Atkins. As I'm under time pressure myself, I really don't have the time listen. I tell her to stop then. And to stop complaining. I tell her its her decision and that she has to take personal responsibility. I hang up feeling really annoyed that Hazel should want to stop now. Hazel herself is feeling really rotten. At the end of the day, I ring home to say I'll be setting off soon. Hazel s

Oh, that got my attention. "COME over here. NOW." I walk over to where the sound is coming from. Its in the fridge: "Open the door then." I slowly but carefully edge the door open. The light blinks on. "Oh, that's better" says the voice. "I can see you now." Then I see it. Sitting in the fridge door. Cool as a cucumber. In fact, green as a cucumber. Its a bottle of dry white wine: "Hey Roy! How's you doing?" I st

Day 70 - Dancing it away
2008-05-11 09:14:00
Outside it is a glorious sunny day. I am in the hallway dancing. All by myself. I am wearing my Ipod and I'm listening to a fantastic version of Ai no corrida. I notice how my flabby bits wobble in time to the music. I'm quite proud of this feat as I can hit several different beats at the same time.I have one great memory from when I was 16 or 17. I was at a nightclub dancing to the music in the middle of the dance floor. I love music so much and have never been shy to be the first on the floor or indeed be the only person on the floor. To the embarrassment of many of my girlfriends. Anyhow on this occasion, an older stunning girl (at 16 most older girls were stunning in my eyes) weaved her way towards me, smiled, rested her hand on my bottom for a few moments, patted it, and then whispere

Day 76 - Sabotage yourself
2008-05-17 12:52:00
Having loaded the shopping bags in the boot of the car, I get ready to set off for home. I'm wearing my Ipod and am listening a song from one of my favorite albums Il Divo, a particularly soft and beautiful song. I put my seat belt on and release the hand brake. I make sure my Ipod is safe on the seat next to me and I pull away.As I do so, I try and lean up and lift my head up straighter but find

Day 75 - Watering time
2008-05-16 16:46:00
I meet Paul in the men's toilets and say "good morning". I'm pleased to see that, other than respond briefly to my greeting, he doesn't try and pursue a conversation. I hate it when other guys try and hold a conversation with you as you are taking a pee. Its very distracting. Sometimes, particularly when I am asked a question, I find I stop. And then I can't go again. Even though I need to. So you

Day 77 - End of Week 11
2008-05-20 12:09:00
Its our Monday morning weigh-in. See our stats page. I shuffle off to work grumbling to myself. My temple of a body is determined to irritate me through its stubbornness to lose the pounds. Although I didn't treat it much like a temple on Friday and Saturday nights when I had some white wine. It is written loud and large on placards in front of my face: YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND DRINK ALCOHOL DUMM

Day 81 - Spicy
2008-05-23 16:04:00
I'm eating more variety this week. Lots of chicken in sauces. I've got quite nerdy, standing at the supermarket shelves reading carb counts on labels. Last week was meat, meat and more meat. Not much else, really, if truth be told. Now I'm eating curry with vegetables and chicken. But no samosas, onion bajies or nan bread. And funnily enough I haven't missed the rice. I did try cauliflower rice an

Day 80 - Motivation
2008-05-23 15:57:00
Jon has an awesome post having found this youtube clip comprising lots of individuals declaring their affirmations to lose weight.Truly inspiring.

Day 79 - Mysterious ways!
2008-05-23 15:25:00
I have been trying hard. Pretty much everything by the book. I have not been cheating. Really. I realise that our bodies do have mysterious forces at work. I am surprised though to find even low carb experts don't always find it easy and somehow find myself reassured by this revelation. Take, for example, Jimmy Moore's posting this week. It gives me great encouragement to continue.

Day 78 - Dropsie
2008-05-23 15:14:00
Hazel walks into the room, her hands cupped together. She looks forelorn: "Its died" she says.I try and see. Its green and blue. Maybe a baby bird?Hazel extends her hands to show me. I stifle a giggle. Its her pedometer. She explains that she dropped it down the toilet.

Day 84 - End of Week 12
2008-05-26 07:17:00
12 weeks already! Where did the days go?I wake early even though its a holiday today. I pad around the kitchen, sipping some water and waiting for the kettle to boil. I want to weigh myself but I have to wait. I haven't had a poo yet. Soon the rumblings begin and I skip off to the bathroom. Why I get so excited, I don't know, but I do. Its not as though, through the miracle of sleep, I'll have she

Day 83 - Sunday lunch
2008-05-26 06:55:00
Hazel's mum and one of her sisters are coming to lunch today. The weather forecast says rain. I say: 'barbecue time!'After yesterday's marathon cooking session, I decide today to keep it very simple. A mixed green salad, hot new potatoes (though not for me!),with a choice of cheese burgers, sausages, spicy chicken, and pork and pepper kebabs. Dessert is chocolate eclairs or fruit salad. As I light

Day 82 - Cooking frenzy
2008-05-26 06:17:00
Its Saturday afternoon and I'm at my happiest: I'm cooking. Hazel is out walking the dog, staying well clear of the chaos. Tonight we are visiting a friend and taking the main dishes. Its going to be a curry night and I'm cooking three currys from scratch: chicken, lamb, and vegetable. I turn up the radio and get my coffee grinder out. I love my coffee grinder. I sniff it. Why do I sniff everythin

Day 88 - Who's had my sausage?
2008-05-30 11:40:00
As I'm working from home today, I have time to put 6 sausages (0.6 carbs each) to cook slowly for an hour. This slow cooking produces the most wonderful tasty sausage and the smell soon gets your taste buds going and your tummy rumbling. I eat 3 and put the remaining 3 on the side for later.Just around lunch time, Hazel returns home from work early. She sits down to eat the chicken salad I have al
