Sony Ericsson P5 rendered in its exact likeness? [Realistic Pics]
2008-04-23 06:53:00
The renderings, I think, of the upcoming Sony Ericsson P5 smartphone don't get more real than this. Sadly, these images are just that -- renderings. Nope, they're not real. But I'm certain that when the real thing finally comes along, they're going to look extremely similar. Continue reading for more "realistic" pics of the Sony Ericsson P5 smartphone.[Just AMP]

LG launches KS-20 with Windows Mobile 6
2008-04-23 06:43:00
LG has launched yet another take at an iPhone killer, and calls it the LG KS-20, a touchscreen phone that's powered by Windows Mobile 6. It features a 2.8-inch, stylus-based touchscreen, a 2 megapixel camera and expandable memory via microSD cards. Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi are built-in, to complement the HSDPA network support for fast data access. Battery is rated at 4 hours during talk and 400 hours on standby. Will it be able to take the iPhone's crown? I think so, if dogs could fly.[Mob-Tel]

Samsung announces Anycall J708 for Hong Kong
2008-04-23 06:33:00
Samsung recently announced the availability of a new low-end and stylish slider handset, called the Anycall J708 for the Hong Kong market. It's highlights include a a 1.3 megapixel camera, support for Bluetooth A2DP, a built-in music player that supports multiple formats, and 16MB of built-in memory that's expandable up to 2GB via a microSD card slot. Other than what's mentioned, the Samsung Anycall J708 doesn't bring much to the table for comparison with other phones, and maybe that's why it's only being launched in Hong Kong.[Samsung HK]

Cellphone repair shops are a hit in India because people there are stupider than most
2008-04-23 06:16:00
Oh great. The cellphone repair industry in India is growing too? In the Philippines, most of these so-called "cellphone technicians" would rip you off faster than you can say "My cellphone is broken," making you pay for services that are essentially supposed to be free, but only if you know how and where to look. But since most people have no inkling of what's going on in hacker communities around the world, they run to cellphone repair shops in desperation, eager to pay whatever they are asked of just to get their handsets up and running again in no time. Don't they know that all it takes to repair a broken cellphone most of the time is a lot of time and an Internet connection?I won't hide the fact that I despise cellphone technicians. The first time I had to go to one for my virus-stricke

PlayStation Home delayed for several more months
2008-04-23 05:43:00
Unfortunately for fans and die-hard Sony PS3 users out there, Sony has announced that it still won't be delivering its much awaited Sony Playstation Home service any time soon, even though this means that they'd be a complete year behind schedule now.Sony doesn't seem to mind that it's losing all these opportunities at making money by being late at rolling out a product, but they should know that sometimes, perfectionists just don't cut it -- especially in the world of tech. By the time it releases Sony Playstation Home, Microsoft or Nintendo could potentially have come up with something else entirely that's better, which of course could kill Sony's efforts again.A lot of fans are upset about this, but sadly there's nothing else to do but just wait for Sony to release the darned thing alre

Apple nabs P.A. Semi for $278 million, could ditch Intel soon
2008-04-23 05:13:00
Apple just acquired a small-ish, 150 person microprocessor design maker for a hefty sum -- $278 million to be exact -- to the surprise of a lot of analysts and fans of the Apple-Intel device team up. The company, called P.A. Semi, Inc., was also involved with Apple back then when there was virtually no Apple-Intel mash-up. Engadget had the scoop about it, reporting that P.A. Semi was actually considered by Apple at the last minute of the Apple-Intel deal (for the processors, that is). Well, it's better late than never, and this move could spell the end of Intel chips inside Apple's machines. So Apple is still defending its vertical status? Obviously.[Forbes]

Twitter learns Japanese and how to advertise
2008-04-23 04:55:00
Today's a nice day to launch things, apparently, as Twitter has also announced that it just made a Japanese clone of its very popular self, to the joy of the kids from the land of the rising sun. It's going to be a display ad-ridden one, which I think is soon going to be the fate of the international version as well. I tried to access the new site by going to and I don't know why but it keeps on kicking me back to the original version at What did I do wrong this time?[Twitter Blog]

The next level of virtual desktops: Microsoft launches Live Mesh
2008-04-23 04:29:00
Today Microsoft announced the availability of their newest creation -- Microsoft Live Mesh, a web-based virtual desktop service that lets you synchronize any number of items and devices as long as they are Windows XP or Vista enabled or capable. Ray Ozzie as chief software architect is the man behind this new project, and together with a team of a hundred engineers have been working on Microsoft Live Mesh for about two years now. So I guess Microsoft was not sleeping after all, and is still determined to grab some market share using Web 2.0 to its advantage. It seems that Microsoft is not yet ready to back down, and is now out to prove everyone who thought that they would cling to the already dying breed of desktop software makers wrong. They had options, and they made the right one. Now M

Zune + Audiobooks do not an iPod killer make?
2008-04-22 13:07:00
So Microsoft decided it would be fun to add official Audible support on their slick portable media player, which has a name that coincidentally has four letters in it as well. Apparently, the good folks from over at Zune support spilled the beans to Paul Thurrott of WinSuperSite with regards to Audible compatibility of the Zune. The semi-official statement reads:While we do not have an exact date as to when the device will be officially AudibleReady, we expect to make the Zune compatible before years end. Our Device Center on our website will be updated upon the Zune becoming compatible, so please be sure to check there periodically.Right. And how is this different from the podcasts in my iPod again? Oh, I forgot, it's harder and more complicated to set up.[Gear Live]

Say it, play it, Xpress it - Nokia 5320 XpressMusic phone
2008-04-22 06:26:00
The Nokia 5220 Xpress Music phone isn't the only new model that Nokia announced today. It also introduced a new 3G/ HSDPA enabled device in the form of the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic candy bar phone, which features access to Nokia Ovi, N-gage, Nokia Search 4.1 and a whole lot more. The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic phone will feature a 3.2 megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, a secondary camera for video calling, expandable memory up to 8GB and of course a 3.5mm headphone jack. Some would think that this would be as far as music phones go, but the list actually keeps going on.The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic phone also boasts of a new Say and Play feature, which works like voice commands, only this time it's for music. To play any song you like, all you have to do is say the name of the song. Pretty neat.

The low end almost gets high, the new Nokia 5220 XpressMusic phone
2008-04-22 05:44:00
Nokia announced two new XpressMusic models today, the first one being a low-end feature phone capable of playing music for 24 hours with a dedicated hi-fi music chip. It's called the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic phone, and its highlights include a 3.5 mm headphone jack, dedicated XpressMusic keys, and a built-in lanyard for added protection against phone loss. Nokia's set on releasing it by Q3 2008 for 160 Euros or about $225 USD before taxes and subsidies. You can dig the symmetrical design if that's your thing, but I think the features are good enough to justify this phone's price. I'm sure this will have support for expandable memory anyway, which surely beats having an iPod Shuffle everytime.[Nokia]

Breaking: Apple patents universal iPhone IM app
2008-04-22 00:26:00
A new patent filed by Apple on August 2007 reveals that it has plans to upgrade the iPhone 's already kick-ass instant messaging app. Actually, the iPhone still hasn't been endowed with an official IM app, unless you consider AIM's take on such a thing official. But the built-in SMS app of the iPhone functions quite well for this job, so Apple is really taking its time in rolling out something that will be officially called the iPhone IM client. Now while the iPhone's current SMS app is so advanced that it passes (and possibly even surpasses) most dedicated IM clients, the features of the IM client found on Apple's latest patent filing reveals a few new features that would make an IM app in the iPhone even better. For one, drawings of the IM client in Apple's patent indicate a feature that le

AT&T Mobile TV to be available in 3 packages on May 4th
2008-04-21 22:42:00
For the few people who are excited about AT&T's upcoming Mobile TV service, I've got some good news and bad news. First, the good news: this new service might be available as early as May 4th, and with three different variants, at that. You can pick one of three different packages, namely Limited, Basic, and Plus, which are going to have more or less different features, and of course, different price points. The bad news? If you're trying to cut costs, $30 a month might put you off. But keep in mind that the $30 price is for the Plus package, which is the the package that lets you make the most of the service. And you can always subscribe for the Limited package, at a mere $13, if you can afford living with knowing that the next package up is just $2 away . Engadget Mobile offers a pre

Google Doodle: Earth Day 2008

Google has just put up their own logo for Earth Day 2008, which I have been waiting to see for quite some time now since Yahoo! has had theirs up and running since a few days ago. Google's logo for Earth Day 2008 is an illustration of a downhill stream, featuring a tree, a waterfall, and some rocks that spell out the word Google. It links to a search page for the search term "earth day." What? I can't have my occassional breaks from gadget news?[Google]

LG officially launches LG-KF700
2008-04-21 21:58:00
The LG-KF700 is a new touchscreen enabled device from LG that also features a slide-out keypad. And other than its 3-inch screen, 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA connectivity, and full-HTML Web browser, the LG-KF700 will also offer a very intuitive user interface that lets users get to anywhere in the menu really really fast. It will be rolled out in black, silver and black with chrome, only I don't know for how much though.[UberGizmo]

Sunlink claims to have made first commercial small projector
2008-04-21 04:37:00
The idea for built-in projectors on portable devices isn't exactly new, but so far no one has been able to fully commercialize it or in short, make any money from the idea. But a company from China called Sunlink says they have done it with a PMP called Sunview. The official name of this device, according to the company, is Sunview PMPP, and PMPP stands for Portable Media Player (you guessed it) Projector (there's the rub). It'll run on an old school Windows CE 5.0, has a 3.5-inch screen, and has the built-in projector. I'm not sure how well that'd work though, just like how I'm unsure of its pricing and release date.[Gadget DNA]

3G iPhone launch date looms, rumors get bigger, spread faster than ever
2008-04-21 04:36:00
These 3G iPhone rumors have been around since last year. In fact, there have been rumors such as this ever since the iPhone was first announced (Will it have 3G?).Unfortunately, Apple has been slow to roll out official support for 3G networks with the iPhone, and even if an insider comment about why Apple made this move holds true, that would still mean that Apple literally killed its first chance at an even bigger market share, since a lot of people opted out of buying an iPhone because it didn't have 3G.But since it's nearing May, and not to mention this year's WWDC is already up and coming, the rumors are becoming bigger and faster-spreading than ever. And yet most of what's being tossed around the Internet is just clutter, and maybe won't even have the slightest chance of becoming true

Energy Sistem's PMP takes you back to the Clinton administration
2008-04-21 04:05:00
Naming your product after a year in the future does not mean that you will instantly be elevated to high-tech company status. And this is more the shameful when the truth becomes known, and people realize that you are not offering a product that can be classified as bleeding-edge technology after all.But who am I to judge a company who's just trying to make ends meet, right? So I guess I'll just leave you with Energy Sistems (not a typo) new PMP, called the 2021, which holds a few features that have been available to many PMP's back in 2001.These include a 1.5" display, 4GB internal memory, built-in FM radio, and support for commonly used multimedia file formats (XviD, MP3, WMA, WAV, JPEG and even TXT, among others). I understand that 54.90 Euros (about $86 or P3,600) can only get you so m

MSI Wind Micro Laptop specs revealed
2008-04-21 03:44:00
MSI's answer to the Asus Eee PC is a similarly positioned sub-notebook computer that's going to be called the MSI Wind, and the details of which have just been recently announced by MSI itself. We now find that other than being a small-ish notebook with a screen that could range from 8 inches to 10 inches at 1024 x 600 resolution, the MSI wind will come with 1GB of RAM, and 80GB HDD, a 7-hour battery life and it will be preloaded with Windows XP just like Asus's little wonder. At 2.2 pounds this seems like the epitome of a portable notebook, plus the processor speed can ranges from 1.0GHz to 1.6GHz. So the question right now isn't what anymore, but when?Pricing details have not been exacting, and estimates are placed between $470 to $1,100 (or from P20,000 to P46,000) depending on user-con

Disqus adds comment filter, max-thread depth option to service
2008-04-21 03:32:00
Blog commenting service provider Disqus added two new features to their service recently, making their commenting system for blogs all the better and able to stand up against more popular and built-in services like those offered with blogs powered by Wordpress. Now users have the option to add word filters and prevent comments with certain words from being posted. Helpful for site's with a few occasional rude commenters. Then a max-thread depth feature was also added, to help kill comments that are getting old real fast. What, you never heard of Disqus? It's a godsend for a lot of bloggers including me, and if you call yourself a blogger too you would do good to pay them a visit.[Disqus Blog]

What the fug?! Bill Gates says you can't improve open-source software!
2008-04-24 00:12:00
If anyone knows anything about open-source software, it would be Bill Gates , right? Right??? Bill Gates is claiming that open-source software kills any chance for further improvement and therefore is bad, so he doesn't like the idea. He said this when he was asked by a reporter if he would consider open source uses in health research during a speaking engagement last Monday afternoon at the Seattle Institute for Systems Biology. Bill says, "There's free software and then there’s open source," following it up by mentioning that Microsoft gives away its software in developing countries. But then he refers to open-source's GPL, "which [they] disagree with." I guess that's why he's not friends with Linus Torvalds, then.[Tech Dirt]

First iPhone dedicated forum in the RP born: iFone.PH
2008-04-23 18:54:00
After posting my very first thread on the Philippine Mac Users group under the iPhone forum, I found out that there was actually a dedicated iPhone discussion forum at iFone.ph. It's rather new, and there hasn't been much activity in it yet. But I'm sure that once word picks up about its existence, more people will visit and contribute to the discussions. It's great for iPhone users like me (I don't have one yet, but I will next month), only I don't get why they couldn't just stick to saying "iPhone" instead of the funky "iFone." Well, it's their forum. So yeah, if you have time, visit iFone.ph and get in the know about the amazing JesusPhone. And have a small dose of patience ready because you still have to register before you can begin using the service (even if you're already a registere

Google could help you find out "thesecretofburritos"
2008-04-23 17:16:00
I understand Google has to have some form of protection for its online brand, and taking similarly spelled and close sounding domain names like goolge.com, googel.com and goggle.com would be OK. But gewgol.com, geggle.com, and georgle.com? georgle.com?!And it gets crazier. Or maybe Google just has a timeless sense of humor, and that's why it also owns a bunch of domain names that at first don't sound like they don't have anything to do with the company. Like: * 30dayfitness.com * bayareaburritos.com * donationcard.com * essentialmommy.com * greengardengifts.com * mariolovespasta.com * thesecretofburritos.comPretty neat? They also own goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle.com (don't ask me why). These domain names just look so naive, it seems they're really sticking
