Floyd Gottfredson in 2006: The Gottfredson Fan Club 1970-01-01 00:59:59 As I mentioned yesterday, I've become quite smitten with the work of pioneering Mickey Mouse cartoonist Floyd
Gottfredson. 2006 looks to be the year that the late Mr. Gottfredson gets some much deserved recognition in the form of an Eisner nod, so to commemorate the event I propose we show our support by posting some of these lil' GIFs on our web pages.Right click to save!Gottfredson Fan Club

anime: Let's all crash the COMIC PARTY! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Anime may not be your thing, but if you have even a passing familiarity with comic conventions, then I highly recommend checking out Comic Party. The 13 episode series focuses on a young Japanese artist who is dragged kicking and screaming into the world of Japanese fan comics, or doujinshi. But self-publishing comics soon becomes his passion and threatens to become all-consuming.Even though the Japanese fan comic scene is quite a bit different than the American con circuit, I think anyone who has had experiences in small press can find something in this show to relate to.The series is spread across four Region 1 DVDs from Right Stuf International. For a more thorough review, head on over to THEM Anime. Read more:crash
Walt Disney Treasures sneak peek 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So what have I been up to these days? Putting the finishing touches on coloring some pages for Gemstone's upcoming Walt Disney
Treasures: Disney Comics - 75 Years of Innovation. It's 160 pages of Disney goodness that'll be hitting the shelves in July. The stories are some of the finest I've had the pleasure of working on, but for me one stands out above the others -- "Foray to Mt. Fishflake" by the late, great Floyd Gottfredson. A Mickey tale from 1934, this story was my first encounter with Mr. Gottfredson's deceptively simple work. The fact that his work holds up so well over 70 years later is a testament to his skill -- and it's a fun read to boot! Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks highly of his work! This book is an ideal introduction for people who normally don't buy the Disney comics. All of your favorite characters are here, and at a price tag of only $12.99 for a whopping 160 pages, how can you go wrong? You can pre-order right here! Read more:Walt Disney
Twingine: Two engines are better than one? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Now this is pretty cool. You can search Google and Yahoo! simultaneously from the same browser window via a split-screen. Sure, there's Dogpile, but I've found its results to be lacking in comparison to doing an individual search on Google or Yahoo! And the kicker is that Twingine is all run on this guy's home computer! Get caught up in the TEMPEST 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The Tempest one-shot was released this month from Alias Enterprises and Community Comics. For those of you who are out of the loop, it's a jam book with proceeds going to the Salvation Army for use in disaster relief. Some hot talents like Phil Hester, Randy Green and Javier Saltares lent their artistic skills to the book, while the always talented Ben Avery (ArmorQuest, Lullaby, The Hedge Knight) provided the words.I had the honor of coloring several pages for the book, and I'd encourage everybody to go out and buy a copy or five. It's a great book and a truly worthy cause. If your local shop didn't order the book, never fear -- Community Comics will be selling them directly through their website very soon. For more information, check out the press release.
Back in Philville: Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival 2006 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Since 2002, I've been doing caricatures every summer (along with my wife) at the Punxsutawney GroundhogFestival
. Most people are unaware of the week-long festival, but it's the second biggest annual event the town has -- the first, of course, being Groundhog Day itself! It's a nice change of pace from being cooped up in an office or studio all day, and we get free entertainment to boot. (Not to mention we make some money -- that's always a plus!)I'll be there again this year and along with doing caricatures, I'll be peddling original artwork as well as some Disney comics. If you're free sometime during the first week of July, are close by and, well, have nothing better to do -- stop on over!
'The Terminal' : Megazeen Con Special 2006 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I just finished illustrating and lettering a cool little story for the upcoming Megazeen 2006 Convention Special
. Written by the talented Jeremy S. Zehr, "The Terminal" is like Adam and Eve gone digital. I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to work on it, and hope that we'll see more of Mr. Zehr's work in the not-too-distant future!Be on the lookout for the MZ crew at a con near you to nab a copy!
Han shoots first: The original Star Wars on DVD 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So 2004's release of the Star Wars
Trilogy wasn't the definitive and final release of the classic trilogy on DVD? Nope. Today it was announced that in an effort to bleed fans dry -- er-- give fans what they've been asking for, the pre-Special Edition classic trilogy will be released to DVD in September, packaged as "bonus material" with the often criticized 2004 remasters.Isn't this what should have been done in the first place? For all my grumbling, I'll be there at midnight, money in hand. Again. For, like, the fourth time in a decade. *sigh* Read more:shoots
Let's go stumbling... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Alright -- I've got a new web toy. StumbleUpon.com lets you select your interests and randomly view websites. You can then review the site, giving it a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down," tag it, share it, etc. -- all from within Firefox (with the add-on, of course!)It may have been around for awhile, but this is the first I've used it, and I gotta say its quite groovy! If you ever wanna look me up to go stumbling

The Floyd Gottfredson Fan Club now has a home! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 If you'll recall my earlier post, I suggested starting an unofficial fan club for pioneering Mickey Mouse comic strip artist Floyd
Gottfredson. Well, at the suggestion of Gemstone's Disney Comics art director, I started up a Squidoo lens that focuses on Mr. Gottfredson. You will find it right here:Floyd Gottfredson and the Mickey Mouse of YesteryearYou'll also notice that the lil' Mickey chicklet above my blogroll points there as well. Steal it -- I dare ya!
Presidential Personality Test: I'm Lincoln? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So I took a few minutes and took this personality test. The results are in, and I'm Abe Lincoln
. Whew! I was afraid I'd be James Buchanan or something. LincolnYou scored 15 Positive, 6 Negative, 16 Active, and 5 Passive! Like the man who led the U.S. through the Civil War, you believe in using extraordinary means to accomplish goals that are best for greater good of the whole.Still, while you are very adept to make accomplishments and lead in a time of great crisis, you may suffer some personal anguish in doing so - and have trouble detaching yourself from the daily negativity of such a position.Still, most would see you as a great leader who gets things done, regardless of your personal fallbacks at times.Harry Truman may also fit this category. I actually watched some movies this weekend 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Between a full-time job, comic book freelancing and a family, I normally don't get to sit down and watch movies
very often, so it's sort of an event for me. Since it was a holiday weekend, I actually knocked off a bit and watched some flicks -- three movies I've wanted to see for awhile now, but haven't had the time to until now.King Kong: Oh man. I dunno. There were parts I really liked, but I honestly don't think I could sit through this one again. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible movie. I just didn't care as much for Kong as I think the uni-mind in Hollywood expected me to. Maybe it was all the hype that killed it for me. Or the fact that it seemed like it was trying to be everymovie to everyone (love story? period piece? horror film?) I honestly can't put my finger on it.I lost interest when Jack Black was dodging the obviously CGI dinosaur stampede (it reminded me a bit of that skit on "Who's Line Is It, Anyway?" -- y'know, with the newscast and the greenscreen
Sonic the Hedgehog 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So I've been in contact with Archie Comics off and on, trying to get a gig doing some pencils for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. My initial contact with editor Mike Pellerito last year was encouraging, but apparently they're chock full of artists up there right now. I'm going to keep on trying, however. I mean, cute anime animal characters and robots in the same book?! Gotta have it!I'm at a bit of disadvantage, I'm afraid, as my knowledge of Sonic
is pretty much limited to the video games (some of my all-time favorites, I might add!) and the new Sonic X anime series. I haven't followed the "Archieverse" much over the past decade or so, but in reading some of the recent books, it's apparent they've gone in a whole 'nother direction from the Japanese storylines.Below are my most recent pencil samples (from about 2 months ago.) I was going to send those up with the intention of getting an "official" sample script to work off of. Here's hoping! Read more:Hedgehog
Did I mention that I think blogging is lame? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So why am I doing this? I honestly have no clue. Everybody and their brother has a blog, so I suppose I ought to have one too. One of these years, blogging will be featured on VH1's "I Love the 00's" and viewed with the same contempt as Member's Only jackets were in "I Love the 80's."Strewth!That being said, here's a picture of an angry monkey. Degree = success? Apparently not in America! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Feeling inferior because you never got your degree? Well, you're in good company -- Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Micheal Dell, David Geffen and Ted Turner to name a few.I give you The College Dropouts Alumni Association. And I'm sure they've all paid off what little they owed in student loans by now.So does a degree always equal success? Just ask the MBA working at the mall. I love this country! Read more:America
Live-action JUSTICE LEAGUE movie in the works?! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 According to Variety there is.Warner Bros., with its major appetite for fresh franchises, is looking to make a feature based on super team the Justice League of America, hiring writing duo Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to pen the script. It's the first major action the studio has taken on the project.Feature film is bound to include some combination of DC's most iconic superheroes, although the studio wouldn't confirm which ones they might be. It's unlikely that the studio and DC Comics, a division of Warner, would opt to feature second-tier characters.Well, this isn't all that surprising. What is surprising is that they may include Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman (the top tier heroes). Those three have movie
series of their own, and I can't help but wonder if this flick were to incorporate elements of the recent Supes and Bats movies, directly tie the continuties together, or just ignore Batman Begins, Superman Returns and the upcoming (??) Wonder Woman movie altogether.
My wife the comic book colorist! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Most people don't know that my wife has been helping me with my coloring chores on Gemstone's Disney comics. In fact, she's been flatting many of my pages for about a year now. Given my crazy schedule with both a full-time day job and other freelancing responsibilities, I honestly don't think I would have made deadline without her help. And she did all of this on top of running the household and watching an extremely hyper 3-year-old.I just found out today that she's been credited in WALT DISNEY'S COMICS AND STORIES #677. Though she's technically been working in comics for about a year now, this is the first time her name has been in print. If you want a rundown of the stories she worked on in this issue, head on over to this INDUCKS entry. She's credited as "K. Pratt." What, you actually thought my real name was "Kneon Transitt?"And if anybody is wondering, she's up for more freelance work. We need more women in comics. *wink*(A big tip of the hat to Mr. John Clark of Gemstone Read more:comic book
The Hero Foundry 1970-01-01 00:59:59 One of the good things to come from MySpace was that I was recently made aware of a non-profit organization called The Hero Foundry
.From their own website..."The Hero Foundry endowments contain an eclectic mix of comic books spanning numerous genres with the desired goal to provide comic literature that inspires creativity, an appreciation for art, and most importantly, to provide positive role models and moral guidance to today's youth. These books are rated by their respective companies and we look to these guidelines to decide appropriate material. Ultimately we look to the recipients of the endowment to make the final selection of the books and content they would like to receive."Getting kids to read? Comics? Featuring positive role models?Sounds like a winner to me.Check them out here.
Quick 'n dirty... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I just revised my template a little. Still pretty cookie cutter, but it's gunna have to do until I get my new site up and can devote time to something a little more customized. Not to mention all those looming deadlines...Oh, the robot? webcomic: "The Evangelists" 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This is a short story called "The Evangelists
" that I drew way back in 2001/2002. After a few years of languishing unfinished in my closet, the story finally appeared in last year's Megazeen #10. While I recolored it myself (as practice for coloring Disney Comics pages), it was originally colored by Mark Melton, but ultimately wound up being printed in black and white due to some financial issues. Transformers... in color! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 As requested by Seitler, here's a color Transformers
sketch. This is Scourge, from the Robots in Disguise anime.Sorta like an evil Optimus Prime clone. Actually, exactly like an evil Optimus Prime clone.
Transformers G1 sketches 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Hot on the heels of those Armada pages, I thought I'd post sketches of some of my favorite G1 Transformers
. Y'know, for the "purists." Again, pencils only.
Transformers: Armada 1970-01-01 00:59:59 A year or so ago I had the opportunity to put together some Transformers
sample pages for Dreamwave Productions. Sadly, they closed their doors mere days after I got these pages done. I'm quite fond of them, however, and thought I'd post them here. These are pencils only, and feature Transformers from the Armada series.
Transformers: Addiction in Disguise 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So I mentioned yesterday that I collected Transformers
. Yes, I've got bunches. Not as many as some collectors, but more than any grown man should legally be allowed to own.Wanna see the obscenity for yourself? My wife snagged these pics from my workspace a few months ago to show her disbelieving friends. And this is just part of my collection. The next "Me Generation?" College students more narcissistic today than ever before. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Here's an interesting read.According to this study, today's young people are more focused on themselves than ever before.A few snippets..."We need to stop endlessly repeating 'You're special' and having children repeat that back," said the study's lead author, Professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. "Kids are self-centered enough already."And..."Unfortunately, narcissism can also have very negative consequences for society, including the breakdown of close relationships with others," he said. The study asserts that narcissists "are more likely to have romantic relationships that are short-lived, at risk for infidelity, lack emotional warmth, and to exhibit game-playing, dishonesty, and over-controlling and violent behaviors."Twenge, the author of "Generation

Fat, Egg, Fat, Fat, Bacon and Fat: Eating out makes your arteries weep. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 It's no surprise that Americans like to eat out. And as a result, it's not surprising that many of us are, well, fat.I knew eating out wasn't the healthiest thing to do on a regular basis, but I had no clue just how bad some of these dishes were until reading this article. (Well, except for the cheesecake. There's no way you're getting off easy on a dessert combining cheese and cake!)You think fast food is bad for you? Your average table-service restaurant like Ruby Tuesday's and T.G.I. Friday's may actually be worse.A bit...Ruby Tuesday's offers an entree called Fresh Chicken & Broccoli Pasta so loaded with cheese and other stuff that it tipped the scales at 2,060 calories and 128 grams of fat, he said. The Transformers Live-Action Movie: Live-Action He-Man redux? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Good grief, Michael Bay! Couldn't you have at least borrowed a copy of the G1 Transformers
DVDs before you started production on this... thing?!For those of you out of the loop, photos have been leaked of the movie versions of Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Starscream and Megatron. And, hoo boy... they couldn't be any further removed from the classic looks of the core Transformers characters. Bumblebee looks like a Bionicle, Prime looks like the Terminator with a flame tatoo, Starscream looks like an ape with bird feet and Megatron... well, Megatron is so abysmal that I just had to blog about this. He barely resembles a robot, let alone a Transformer, let alone such an iconic character as Megatron!Look, I'm not such a G1 purist that I demand cartoon accurate designs -- but this is just too much! It's too far removed from the essence of Transformers, which has remained more or less intact throughout all incarnations of the series over the past 20 years. And from what has been leaked, the Read more:Action

The Fearnots: Father and son team launch new all-ages webcomic 1970-01-01 00:59:59 What's better than spending time reading comics with your kid? How about making comics with your kid? That's just what self-proclaimed "Ragamuffin Cartoonist" Jamie Cosley (Nippy Wallaboosh, More Than Sparrows) and his boy are doing. This month, Cosley and Son have unleashed The Fearnots on Jamie's blog. The all-ages webcomic
follows Jamie's alter-ego Tony Pony and Jamie's real-life son (known in the strip as "T-Bear") as they battle ferocious tunnel monkeys with the sweet strum of the acoustic guitar. And watch out for the mysterious Izzy Goots!I have absolutely no idea where this crazy strip is going, as Cosley and Son are making it up as they go along. But what I do know for sure is that they seem to be having a real blast doing it and it shows! So do yourself a favor and pop by Jamie's blog to check out the latest installment. More Than Sparrows: More than a funny book 1970-01-01 00:59:59 "The most powerful portrayal of Christian forgiveness ever done in comic book form. Sublime in its simplicity." - Paul Castiglia, veteran comic book writer and editor("Eternity Force," "Archie's Mysteries," "Conservation Corps") I couldn't have said it better myself. "Ragamuffin Cartoonist," regular Megazeen contributor and all-around nice guy Jamie Cosley is releasing his excellent graphic novel "More Than Sparrows" through Blindwolf Studios.I had the honor of being one of the first to read the book when it was still a work-in-progress, and I was floored. I expected a fun little romp with Jamie's alter-ego, Tony Pony. What I got was a deceptively simple tale of forgiveness, perhaps made even more powerful by the fact that I wasn't expecting something with this much emotional weight to it.My highest possible recommendation to churches, librarians and anybody else who cares to read a well-done "funny book" with some real substance. Kudos, Jamie!(And kudos to Josh Alves as well, for
MacFoo! ...it's coming soon? 2007-03-03 01:44:00 Eric Merced dropped me a line with a curious announcement...I realize most of you faithful watchers of my humble blog have been returning time after time only to find that I have not moved even a pinky in my hand to update. My sincere apologies. But I want to honestly make it up to you all. So...starting next week, I am going to post a page a week of the upcoming Dog saint comic! That's right. One page a week. This is your chance to get to see the comic before it hits the stands. I was planning on printing an ashcan before the actual book was published, but I prefer to post it online instead. So please do come back next week as I will be starting my weekly Dog Saint strip called: The Legend of the red mask!
