Hot Rod / Rodimus Prime figure scheduled for Transformers Alternators line?
2007-05-01 18:08:00
Pictures have surfaced on ACToys.net of what appears to be a Hasbro redeco of the Japanese Kiss Players Hot Rod imus figure . The toy has a more G1 faithful paint application than its counterpart, and will no doubt be a huge hit with collectors (myself included!)No word yet on where this figure will appear, but given that the Alternators line has all but run its course, I'd guess it's a convention exclusive. Maybe it'll be the next San Diego Comic-Con exclusive like last year's Nemesis Prime? Only time will tell...

CBR reviews SPIDER-MAN 3: Thumbs up!
2007-05-04 14:02:00
Comic Book Resources has posted an in-depth review of Spider-Man 3, and it definitely gets a pass! I've been reading a few other movie and comics sites bemoaning the film, but the positive reviews seem to be outweighing the negative ones by a fairly wide margin. Here's a bit...Writers Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi and Alvin Sargent as well as the entire cast and crew deserve all the respect and admiration they're sure to receive for "Spider-Man 3," as it is easily the most complex and deftly orchestrated superhero epic ever filmed.I viewed the film while sitting next to a very popular and acclaimed comic book writer, and he remarked to me that "Everything - the emotion, the action, the plot - everything was balanced so perfectly. It's the best of the three."While "3" doesn't contain a scene that even approaches the intensity of "2's" "He's just a kid" moment, the writer was correct: "3" is #1. Quibbles aside, the story made sense unto itself, was never confusing and wrapped up its unreso

Preview: DAWN OF MANA for PS2
2007-05-03 20:12:00
Secret of Mana is one of my favorite Super Nintendo games of all time. So when I heard that a prequel was being developed for the PS2, I was naturally excited. The trailers for this game show off some gorgeous graphics. Being the first 3D game in the series, the gameplay itself looks very similar to the Kingdom Hearts titles, another excellent Square Enix RPG franchise. See for yourself by checking out the preview below! My son saw the trailer and absolutely loves it, so I can pretty much guarantee we'll be picking it up later this month.Dawn of Mana has a U.S. release date of May 22, 2007. You can pre-order it here.

Transformers movie Starscream and Ratchet retooled and repainted as G1??!
2007-05-03 17:34:00
Wow -- that was fast! The "official" movie toys aren't even out yet, and yet pics of repaints are already leaking.Hasbro must really be sweating all the negative feedback from fandom over the live-action movie designs. TFormers.com reports that an eBay seller has listed prototypes of Movie Starscream and Movie Ratchet sporting G1 colors -- with Starscream sporting a new, more G1-esque head design! So where's my "flameless" Prime?See for yourself...

Transformers movie FRENZY figure revealed... unfortunately.
2007-05-03 14:28:00
Soundwave he ain't.Heck, a good toy he ain't.I was going to refrain from writing any more about the movie until it premiered, but since this is more about the toys than the movie I figure d "what the heck?""Frenzy" is the name given to the pathetic Soundwave wannabe in the upcoming Michael Bay Transformers movie. From what I've heard, he was scripted as Soundwave, while the design was referred to as "Soundbyte" until the name was finalized. But when fans caught wind of this horrible excuse for a Transformer, they revolted and somehow managed to get his name changed to that of one of Soundwave's cassette minions instead. In the movie he will appear as a boombox that turns into a an anorexic four-armed, four-eyed, chicken looking thing that's all of three or four feet tall. No mass shifting in this movie, so that's about as big as he gets. And, oh yeah, he kills people with deadly CDs. Kind of like that lame Cenobite from Hellraiser III.Oh, I wish I were kidding. For reference, here'

SPIDER-MAN 3 rakes in $148 million over the weekend!
2007-05-07 14:13:00
From Yahoo movie news...Spider-Man caught just about everyone in his web. The superhero's latest adventure, "Spider-Man 3," smashed box-office records with $148 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday. That put it ahead of the previous record debut of $135.6 million set last summer by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."With $59.3 million on opening day Friday, Sony's "Spider-Man 3" broke the single-day box-office record, also held by "Dead Man's Chest" with $55.8 million in its first day.Yes, it was good. Aside from the too-painful-to-watch Peter Parker jazz club jig (and Harry Osborn's butler, Mr. Exposition), this movie is pure win.Go. Now.

Good reviews for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"?
2007-05-23 08:43:00
So far, the press hasn't been too kind to Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third. But maybe the third time's a charm? Or is that... the third third time?Anyhoo, here's what the AP has to say... It's way too long and massively convoluted and ultimately just plain silly. But still, "Pirates of the Caribbean : At World 's End" is a lot of fun a lot of the time. The third movie in the freakishly successful "Pirates" franchise feels substantial and looks impressive and fulfills the hype surrounding it in a way the other thirds — Spidey and Shrek — haven't so far.The full article is here.

"Nobel Prize of Manga" announced
2007-05-23 07:01:00
From the Associated Press...Japan will hand out its first "Nobel Prize of Manga " this summer for artists in the comic book genre abroad, another step in its efforts to harness the power of pop culture diplomacy. The International Manga Award — which manga enthusiast Foreign Minister Taro Aso likened to a "Nobel Prize " when he first proposed it last year — will be given to an artist working abroad whose work best contributes to the spread of the manga form worldwide, the ministry said Tuesday in a statement. Manga, a name used for Japanese-syle comic books, often combine complex stories with drawing styles that differ from their overseas superhero counterparts, particularly in their frequent emphasis on cuteness. The winner and three runners-up will receive a certificate and trophy at an awards ceremony set for July 2, and will spend 10 days in Japan meeting with local comic book artists and publishers, the statement said. "Manga and anime have been spreading overseas and are sellin

Hasbro's SDCC exclusive toys turning up on eBay... huh?!
2007-06-04 12:41:00
Talk about putting the "con" in convention.Apparently some... overly-eager eBay sellers have been listing several of Hasbro 's San Diego Comicon exclusive toys this week. This includes Alternators Rodimus, Titanium Menasor and even the My Little Pony exclusive.Sellers are charging about three times what these toys will retail for at the Con, and are listing these as "pre-orders." Thing is, the SDCC isn't until the end of July and apparently eBay's rules state you have to ship pre-orders within 30 days of the auction's end.Which is totally impossible.Oh, and of course these sellers want immediate payment.Buyers, beware!

Collectors: Stay far away from Terrance Hayslett (aka Alex Newsom)
2007-06-04 07:23:00
Several months ago, I had posted a warning on some Transformers forums about a toy trader/seller from Memphis, TN who goes by the name of "Terrance Hayslett" or "Terrell Hayslett" or "Alex Newsom" or "Jeff Boyland" (are any of these his real name?)It's come to my attention that after years of scamming collectors, this guy is apparently still ripping people off as of February 2007. He personally swindled me out of $100 in merchandise back in 2004 (a MISB Energon Megatron and 3 TRU Cobra troop builder packs), and I wound up having to cancel a $200 check for a promised lot of loose Transformers that never materialized. He frequents Spawn, He-Man, G.I. Joe and Transformers forums, and has quite the reputation all over the internet. Here's just a handful of links from his victims:http://board.spawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=295604http://board.spawn.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-162560.htmlhttp://adctalk.com/index.php?showtopic=1972845&mode=threadedhttp://ozfigures.conforums2.com/inde

Transformers Animated: I'm digging it!
2007-11-05 07:55:00
I know there's been a lot of talk (both good and bad) about Cartoon Network's upcoming Transformers Animated series. Personally, I'm really looking forward it. I loved how Teen Titans was handled, and from what I've seen, this new TF series recalls the original '80s series while retaining some of the more recent concepts from Beast Wars and the live-action movie for younger fans.Check out some clips...

Do you have a fear of clowns? If not, Korpso the Evil Clown just might do the trick!
2007-12-05 11:03:00
So I did this wacko gag strip for an issue of The Megazeen awhile back. I've considered doing a webcomic with ol' Korpso, but I'm not sure how much mileage a person can get out of an evil clown... and if it'll take me places I'd rather not go to. Hmm...Anyway, he makes for a fun t-shirt. Hop on over to my store and buy something, won't you?As any kid who has had nightmares about evil clowns will tell you, the last thing you want to hear him say is something along the lines of "Children. It's what's for dinner."

Peddling comics: What are my friends up to?
2007-12-12 07:28:00
I'm lucky enough to know a lot of really talented people. Let's see what some of them are up to, shall we?Prolific 'toonist Jamie Cosley has just released his latest book, Nobody Likes Tony Pony. Tony is Jamie's alter ego and has previously appeared in webcomics and in some of Jamie's other books, as well as landing a starring role in the excellent More Than Sparrows graphic novel. Buy them here and here.Ben Avery has just posted Community Comics' newest book on Wowio. Wowio lets you download full-length, high-quality comics in PDF format at no cost. Free. You heard me. There's a full page ad that makes this possible, and every download drops some coinage into the publisher's hat.The Thieves is a powerful story of faith drawn in a beautiful manga style. Some good stuff -- highly recommended! Get it here.I also have to mention that Ben has been hard at work on TimeFlyz, a new manga series from Zondervan. You definitely want to check this series out.
