Walking Along the River Douglas, Lancashire
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After saying in my last post that the weather was a bit grotty, last Sunday afternoon the sun came out so I went for a walk down to the boatyard and along the banks of the River Douglas .I've been walking along this stretch of our local river since I was a child (a long time ago) and my father used to keep his boat on a fixed mooring in a creek off the river - I remember going out in the middle of the night fishing off Blackpool and not being able to come back until the tide came back in.After getting to the boatyard I turned left and walked along the top of the embankment that keeps the flood tide out of the fields. This tree stump has been here almost as long as I can remember. The tide floods the area I was stood on during spring tides so it must weigh a good few tones not to have been washed out to sea.Continuing on, the river bends to the left and heads almost in a straight line until it joins the River Ribble which then meets the sea at Lytham.I didn't walk that far although it i

Sea Fishing Tackle Part 2 - Reels
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Continuing on from part 1 of my description of the sea fishing tackle we use and why, this installment explains the different types of reels we use.The main reel I use is the Abu Garcia 6500C3 CT Mag Elite (pictured to the left). I have a pair of these multiplier (or baitcaster) reels set up in exactly the same way just in case the line breaks and I have to change over in a hurry. They are a great casting reel, are easy to control (for a multiplier!) and I match them with my Tip Tornado rods when fishing mainly 'clean' beaches or areas where massive winching power is not an issue. These reels are good with line of about 15lbs breaking strain.Wendy has a pair of Penn Surfmaster fixed spool reels, in fact these are the first proper reels we got and have been very reliable and with two spools for each she is able to load different line for different applications / types of venue (usually 2 x 15lbs, 1 x 18lbs and the last at 25lbs breaking strain).Fixed spool reels are much easier to con

Sea Fishing Tackle Part 1 - Rods
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This entry marks a bit of a departure from the normal. As we're not fishing at the moment and the weather is a bit wet for walking I'll be outlining some of the gear we use in our sea fishing. This first installment is all about the rods we use, why we bought them and what we use them for. Before buying a new rod or even going into a tackle shop ask yourself a few basic questions. What type of fish do you want to catch, where do you want to catch them from and how do you want to catch them.Once you've answered these questions you'll have a much better idea one what it is you're looking for. Have a look in the sea angling magazines for reviews on the type of rod you're after, go into your local tackle shop and speak to the staff - most will be only to happy to help but the best advice I can give is 'try before you buy'. Most clubs or groups of anglers have regular get togethers or matches and will be happy to let you 'have a go'.Remember, money isn't everything, just becasue a

Anglesey July / August 2006 - Part 2, Sea Fishing
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After the long hot and wind free July we were looking forward to some lazy days fishing from the rocks on Anglesey. Alas the weather gods had a different plan for us and after lazing around in the sun on, of all things, Sunday (what else...) we woke on Monday to rain and a strong Westerly wind which dented our plans a little so we did a bit of walking instead. After a while, I'm not sure which day we meandered over to our favorite spot of the year, a mark called 'flagpole' near Beaumaris where we found shelter as the wind was blowing over our heads. The bait we took was frozen sandeel but no bites were forthcoming so i had a rummage around the rocks and found 2 crabs and, almost exactly the same as in may, Wendy managed to land her first proper Bass, only a small school fish but as you can see she was very, very pleased. I didn't get a bite but this fish more than made up for it.Our next attempt at a few fish was Ravens Point on the west side of Holy Island. Here the water is very d

Anglesey July / August 2006 - Part 1, Walking
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Well we've got back from our two week jaunt to Anglesey and I'm splitting this blog into two bits, walking and fishing. The weather was 'interesting' during the first week with west featuring predominantly in the wind direction which made fishing difficult so rather than stay inside on these blustery days we went out and explored the wonderful coastline that surrounds anglesey. The first photograph is of the cliffs around the South Stack area where we had a quick look at the RSPB station. There's quite a lot of information on South Stack on the BBC Wales website here. We didn't see many birds on the cliffs although there were a few Kittiwakes with chicks still in residence and on the way back to the car a Chough flew up the cliff face towards us as we were having a drink - I've only ever seen them in the distance before so this was a fantastic site.As the weather didn't seem to be getting any better we called into ABC tackle at Beaumaris to ask Malcolm about fishing the straits.

Wycoller, East Lancashire - A sunday afternoon wal...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It's been a long time since we went for a walk and we both needed to get out of the house for a breath of fresh air. We elected to go to Wycoller, after I'd seen the photographs of it on the 'Images of Lancashire ' blog by Paul Brookfield (see below).Wycoller and the surrounding area is designated a country park and no cars are allowed in the village except for residents and disabled visitors although there is ample car parking on the road from Trawden. As we didn't have anywhere we needed to be in a a hurry, we ambled through this beautiful unspoiled village, stopping at every bridge, house, stream or even tree for a closer look. The first photograph (don't forget that you can click on the images to see an enlargement) is of one of seven bridges crossing Wycoller Beck and is of the Packhorse bridge and adjacent ford. This next image is of Wycoller Hall, thought to be the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in the novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte. Much of the stone has been ta

Sea Fishing Tackle Part 3 - End Tackle and Rigs
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Continuing on with the series on sea fishing tackle this section will deal with what are termed rigs or end tackle, the business end containing the hook or hooks and different ways of attaching them and why.We make almost all of our own rigs so that we can customise them for specific venues / target species and, when you make you own end tackle you can be sure of the quality of the knots, hooks, swivels etc. For most of this section I will refer to the website of a company called Gemini who make the majority of bits and pieces we use and although we make our own end tackle they supply completed rigs ready to use as well as the bits needed to make them.Main rig line is normally Penn tuff Stuff and hook lengths / snoods are made from Sunset Amnesia as it tends not to 'kink', both lines can be purchased from all good tackle dealers.Where distance isn't an issue the rigs most used are either what is called a 1 up, 1 down flapper or a 2 up flapper - see here on the Gemini website. Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve, Lancashire
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I was determined to get out for a walk on Sunday even though the weather was a bit overcast so I paid a long over due visit to one of our local nature reserves, Mere Sands Wood, which is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire , Manchester and North Merseyside. This reserve has always been a favourite of mine, not only because it's almost on our doorstep, but due the the huge variety of flora and fauna that can be seen without the use of any special equipment. As I was in no hurry I meandered up and down all the paths and went into all the bird hides to see if any of the winter visitors had arrived yet.The Great crested grebes were still looking after some chicks that looked large enough to fend for themselves and all the usual water birds were present but no signs of the winter species yet.Apparently a few rarities had been spotted earlier in the week but I'm not dedicated enough to sit staring through a pair of binoculars for hours on end for that one elusive glimpse.I'd rather

Formby Point - Search For Lug Then Hunt The Bass
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After seeing on the internet some stunning Bass coming out at Formby Point and a huge 9lb 12oz fish being caught at Crosby during the previous week I arranged with a few friends to meet up at the car park at the end of Lifeboat Road at 6.00am - yes, that's 6 in the morning! It was a struggle getting up in time to meet the guys but once on the beach, looking back towards the sand dunes, the dawn greeted us in spectacular fashion. We set about pumping some Black Lug out of the area, which looks a lot easier than it is. There's a great article on the wirralseafishing.co.uk website which explains the technique involved in getting these worms, which can sometimes be over 12 inches long, out of the sand.Once we'd all got enough worms for the first cast we waded across the last of the gulleys and cast a bait out, hoping to catch that early fish while we pumped some more bait.As the tide turned it became necessary to continually move backwards after casting out as the beach is very flat and

West Lancashire Yatch Club 24 Hour Race
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yesterday I had a bit of free time on my hands and after finding out during last week that one of my cousins was sailing in the West Lancashire Yatch Club's 40th 24 hour race I decided to go and have a look at the start of the event on Marine Lake, Southport. My cousin and her husband both sail for Ogston Sailing Club and each of them were doing a couple of 2 hour shifts throughout the race. Ogston had 3 boats competing this year consisting of masters (over 40's), fast and everything else crews, all in Enterprise class boats. The event was very well attended and the weather was fantastic. The wind coming across the lake made some good speeds possible and it was not unusual to see the small boats plane across the water - especially the GP14 class as pictured here which was able to take a spinnaker (the light blue sail) to catch even more wind.It was good to have a little insider knowledge into the 'mechanics' of sailing and after a while I began to realise that I had underestimated th

A Lunchtime Stroll in Queens Park, Bolton
1970-01-01 00:59:59
As the weather was so good today I thought I'd take my camera out to take a few photographs in Queens Park, Bolton , which is where I can usually be found wandering around during my lunch hour looking at this amazing space right in the middle of town.I usually approach from the entrance nearest the centre of town which passes through an abundance of Buddleia, these in turn attract a variety of butterflies, one of which was this Comma as well as the usual suspects of Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Painted Lady and Peacock.I could quite happily watch these colourful insects all day but I continue on over a small bridge into the bottom area of the park. The area where I walk is bordered on one side by the River Croal on which many water birds reside, mainly Mallard, Coot and Grey heron On some days, if you're lucky you can see a couple of Kingfishers flying up and down hunting for fish or maybe a Dipper running up and down the river bank.During the spring and summer Brown Trout can eas

Garden Almost Complete - too hot to fish or walk!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Well, the weather has been stunning here in Lancashire. In fact it's been too hot to go walking or fishing, not that I'm complaining you understand, so we've contented ourselves with pottering in the garden and doing general house maintenance this past week. The front garden now looks great and the new plants are shooting up, especially when we remember to water them! We ended up getting three new plants for Wendy's birthday from Mum & Dad; a small fir tree, a dwarf rhododendron and a japanese maple (or acer) and you would not believe the new growth they've put on in just a couple of weeks. That's about it for this week - sorry it's a bit short but nothing to report on the main topics of this blog. On another note we finally finished our new website at work today - you can have a look by clicking www.d-room.co.ukTags: garden, lancashire, web design, website

A Couple of Birders Reborn - Martin Mere Revisited
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I took a few days off work at the end of last week to do a bit of sea fishing but the weather once again had different ideas. A little wind we want but 45 mph gust onto the shore is a bit much by anyones standards. Fell walking was out of the question so where to go?As Martin Mere is only a few miles from our front door we decided to pay another visit to this fantastic bird reserve owned by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.I've mentioned in previous posts that sometimes the birds are just too far away to see or photograph. Well on Friday we finally did it - we purchased a fieldscope (small telescope) from the very helpful Andy at the In Focus shop, it really does make a huge difference being able to set up many 'scopes' onto the same subject at the same time so that you can compare them. We ended up with an Opticron GS665 with a 20 - 40x magnification eyepiece, a tripod and a clamp for using it within a hide. After using it until the light failed we are both very pleased so far with

A View From the Other Side
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In the interest of fairness, and because the pictures are so damn good, here is a link to my other brother's website which showcases some of the stunning photographs taken during his many dive trips, both here in the UK and abroad.Phil's Personal Website - Great underwater imagery.I Know how hard it is to take a good photo on land so how he managed these and remembered to breath is beyond me. Amazing to see the ocean from under the waves for a change but me, I'd rather watch it from above, chilled out in the sun with fishing rod in hand.Tags: diving, photography

The Storms Come and the Rivers Flood.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The weather has been a bit breezy lately with strong gales and heavy rain battering the coastline up and down the country, not suitable for sea fishing or walking. After seeing the state of the River Yarrow which I cross every day on my way into Bolton I had a walk around Queens Park to survey the damage done to the trees. They were in remarkable condition with just a few loose branches blown off but the River Croal was the highest I've seen it for a long time. Compare it to the photographs in this entry 'A Lunchtime Stroll' which I did in September last year.Everything seems to be holding up well in the face of this weather which, listening to the news, you'd think was a suprise. It sometimes seems people forget what winters are supposed to be like.I can't imagine what they'll say when these Northerly winds bring us all a bit of snow! I just wish it would get a bit colder and stop raining then we can get up onto the fells without wading through bogs that should have frozen months

Winter in Bolton - what Winter?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After a couple of dismal weeks worth of bad luck regarding the weather, where it would be nice a frosty during the week and raining at the weekend we're not going to get out this weekend either as Wendy is 'on call' and has to stay within an hours traveling time of the local hospital. So plans of fell walking are out but I do intend to get out somewhere before I go mad...Walking through the park on Wednesday I was amazed to see a few flowers already coming out including the first hint of purple from the crocus' and a few wild primrose (primula vulgaris) and today during my lunchtime stroll the birds were in full song as if celebrating the arrival of Spring, a little early but I knew just how they felt. It's amazing the difference a little bit of sunshine can make you feel.I took this photo on Wednesday as well just to show the level of water that's now coming down the River Croal. It's like a completely different river compared to a couple of weeks ago. I was going to take some ph

Welcome To The Year 2007
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The new years is here and over on the west coast of the UK it arrived in some style, with winds gusting up to 70 mph. Where does the time go? We had every intention of going on a few fell walking trips as well as doing a lot more sea fishing over the Christmas break but before we knew it, it was time to go back to work.It doesn't look like we're going to have any snow this winter either - we've not even had frost in lowland Lancashire so just to remind everyone what snow is the above picture was taken in March last year when we went walking over Fairsnape and Parlick. Our promise to ourselves this year is to do more sea fishing, fell walking and birding and - if possible - to be out in the countryside even more than last year. A tall order but we're willing to give it our best shot!As well as the usual we'll be going on another bank holiday Bass quest to Anglesey at the beginning of May and for a change we're going to Devon for our summer break, we're already looking forward to t

Relaxing Sea Fishing at Rossall, Lancashire
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last night we had a quick trip up to Rossall near Fleetwood, Lancashire to see if we could snare a few fish before Christmas and to get away from the mayhem that seems to arrive at this time every year. The weather was by no means ideal and when we got there the sea was flat calm with a mist rolling in. It's always a bit strange being on a beach during the night but with hardly a ripple on the sea and visibility down to 100 meters it was a little odd, but damn it was good to be out sea fishing after so long.Hi-tide was about 1 o'clock so we fished from about 10.30pm through to 2.00am.Bites were a little slow in coming to me during the run up to high water but Wendy was getting plenty of interest in her lug worm baits but just couldn't connect with any fish. Then as high water arrived she started landing a few Whiting then proceeded to show me how it's done by catching 2 at once.It was another of those sessions where I was out fished by Wendy, 6 fish to 3 although I did manage a Flou

Final Plants - Garden Complete
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last week we finally finished the front garden after purchasing a couple of plants to fill in some holes. One of them, Black Dragon Grass (Ophiopogon Nigrescens) we've put amongst the rocks which looks great, the other, Pieris japonica 'Katsura' is against the front wall. Both look very good against the purple slate and are already showing signs of new growth. This recent heat wave means that we've been watering every night, and that coupled with plenty of sun means that all the plants, new and old, are shooting up at a remarkable rate. To say that we are pleased with the results of our first proper foray into gardening would be a massive understatement and I only hope that we can keep the garden in as good a condition as it now deserves. Now all we've got to do is figure out what to do wit the back garden! The problem here is that it floods due to the clay soil so the current plan is to pave or gravel the entire area and put in a lot of raised beds and pots which means that we'll

Winter Storms and Christmas Cheer
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Isn't Christmas great? There was no fell walking, sea fishing or birding last weekend, as it was Christmas tree buying weekend! As usual we ended up chopping over a foot off the top of it to get it in to the house - it happens every year but we just can't help it. It is now in position and decorated with lights and baubles. It looks great and smells wonderful. On Sunday we went up to my parents to get some Holly for the table decorations where we had a good chat, a wonderful diner and a drink or two which was very relaxing. But what about the weather? The wind along the Lancashire coastline these past couple of weeks has been unbelievable and, looking at the forecasts for the coming weeks, is set for some time.During the Christmas break we're hoping to go sea fishing up towards Fleetwood as well as do a bit of fell walking so hopefully the weather isn't going to be quite as bad as predicted. If nothing else the storms are good for birding as all sorts gets blown of track and ends up a

Wild, Windy and Wet - No Sea Fishing This Weekend!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Well I can definitely say that the winter storms have arrived here in Lancashire this week. The weather has been awful and it looks like it's going to continue into the weekend. Damn!We were hoping to go out on a boat trip (fishing a match with the Blackpool and Layton Angling Society guys again) onto the River Mersey but neither myself or Wendy are fantastic on boats in dodgy weather so we've cancelled - I hope they have a good time on Sunday - if the boat goes out!The garden is now devoid of leaves and underwater so there's nothing to do there, so what to do over the weekend?Christmas shopping has been done but I'm sure we're missing something...The Christmas Tree!!! Yes, this is the weekend that we get our tree, a real one of course and kick-start Christmas off with putting up the decorations, and maybe a glass of wine or two...Tags: boat fishing, lancashire, river mersey, sea fishing

Winter Approaches and a Few Cod Arrive
1970-01-01 00:59:59
With it being the Guy Fawkes celebrations during last weekend we didn't get out sea fishing or fell walking as we spent a very enjoyable time at my parents.I did manage to go out on Sunday with my father, his two labradors, my youngest brother and his girlfriend. We went for a gentle stroll around Beacon Fell which as always was wonderful while Wendy and mother prepared a feast for our return. A very relaxing weekend. There have been some signs in both Lancashire and Merseyside that the cold weather is finally bringing the Cod and the larger Whiting down from their Northern summer feeding grounds with Cod up to about 3 pounds being caught around Fleetwood and a few almost the same size coming out of the River Mersey in last weekends sea fishing matches.Hopefully next time we're out I'll be writing about Cod and chips!Tags: cod, fleetwood, lancashire, merseyside, river mersey, whiting

The Weather is Psychic...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I haven't updated this blog recently as every time we plan to go out fell walking during the weekend the rain gods laugh at us and our outing has to be cancelled. All except this weekend, the sun was out and the rain stayed somewhere else but... we had to go and pick some tiles as we're having the bathroom re-tiled next week. So not much going on recently except house maintenance and avoiding the rain. The annoying thing is during the week, when I'm at work, the weather has been perfect for sea fishing - oh well - roll on Spring and Summer.

Angling on Anglesey, May Bank Holiday
2007-05-12 11:43:00
We set off last Friday (just over a week ago) for our first trip to Anglesey this year, looking forward to a bit of fishing and a long weekend away. Our first stop was at a new tackle shop in Menai Bridge owned and run by Gareth, the founder of the fishing4u.co.uk sea fishing forum, where we picked up some bait and as usual bought some bits and pieces. We spent our first evening targeting Bass out of the Menai Straits but all we could catch was weed as the wind was blowing strongly down the Straits, even if we'd had a bite I doubt we'd have seen it! A shame really as last year this venue produced my best ever Bass. The following day (Saturday) the wind was very strong which made it impossible to fish anywhere on the West of the island, which is what we had planned so after a quick trip to see Gareth again for some advice we ended up on the East side on a beautiful headland called Caim Head. The place was magnificent and very sheltered from the wind so proceeded to empty the area immedia

The Gardeners Friend
2007-06-29 01:59:00
A lot of the time we have to go out of our way to see some of the amazing things mother nature has to show us in the country, but sometimes nature comes to see us.We sere sitting outside enjoying a brief spell of sun before darkness fell and more rain came down when we heard a shuffling at the bottom of the garden, thinking nothing of it and assuming it was one of the many cats from the surrounding homes we carried on chatting until I looked up and spotted this little fellow looking back at me.I managed to get very close and as you can see, the Hedgehog was in no way camera shy.We left him to his evening stroll hoping that he would eat as many slugs as he could find, they eat up to 15 a night so that should save a few of the leaves on the plants. We haven't been sea fishing or walking recently as the weather has been atrocious for June but we're hoping to get out and about once the rain stops but looking at the weather forcast for the coming weeks it looks like we'll have to keep our

A Rarity on our First Birding Quest
2006-12-04 16:30:00
After purchasing the scope on Friday we were eager to try it out on something a little more challenging. There had been sightings during the previous month of a very rare bird to the UK so flasks were packed and like proper birders off we went in search of our quarry. The destination was Fluke Hall, Pilling on the Southern side of Morecambe Bay. The weather was, once again, very windy and just to make it worse, showers were frequent and cold. I thought I'd spotted our target on the drive to the car park but wasn't sure until a very kind man confirmed our suspicions. We came out of the woods a little apprehensively, would it still be there? YES! You could see it with the naked eye, closer with the binoculars and through the scope it was amazing. A Glossy ibis! So rare a visitor to the UK there have only been 87 sightings between 1958 and 2004. It's not even on the RSPB web site. Just as I pulled the camera from my pocket it flew behind the trees but just to see it was fantastic - a tru

Magnificent Marshside - Birdwatch
2006-11-25 13:45:00
The weather forecast yesterday was horrific with almost 40mph winds and heavy rain so we cancelled our sea fishing trip and hence didn't get any bait. Imagine my frustration on waking this morning to a light breeze and glorious sunshine - oh well, British weather, what can you do?Not wanting to waste the fine weather I went walking around the Marshside RSPB reserve, near Southport, Merseyside. The drive took about 15 minutes and as I approached the car park down the coastal road I spotted a few bright white shapes on the seaward marsh. I quickly parked the car and raced back to the spot and got out the binoculars in time to see 4 Little Egrets, a first for me! To far a way for a good photo - I took a few but the birds were far to small in the images to make out. I slowly walked back down the coastal road, enjoying the huge flocks of Lapwing and Starlings until I got to the nearest hide. By now the wind was getting stronger (thank goodness I wasn't fishing after all) so it was good to
