Chile is THE place for great tasting Pinot Noir 2007-02-20 12:43:55 I am addicted to Pinot
Noir from Chile. The two I have been tasting are Cono Sur 2006 and Bio Bio Valley 2006. Thet are both under a fiver and yet have great depth of flavour and taste.
Cono Sur is the best, an earthy nose with mushrooms and hedgerows to tase. Bio Bio is fruitier, slightly sharper, still an exciting taste.
If you want to explore a new wine region get on to Chile!

Lewis! Morse without Morse, but it works! 2007-02-19 17:38:51 Last night (9pm ITV1) was the start of Lewis
, which is Morse
by any other name. The producers had to find a way to carry on after the death of the great John Thaw, and promoting lewis and giving him a lewis of his own was a good idea. The Oxford settings remain, although the classic car has gone. To keep the pseudo-intellectual element, Lewis’s Lewis (Hathaway) has been given an erudition that Morse would have been proud of, last night demonstrating his knowledge of ancient Greek myths.
SPOILER ALERT…Â
The story was an interesting blend of murder, without a murderer - which was an intriguing twist on most detective stories. Morse fell for the ladies occasionally, and Lewis leaves the case knowing surely, that although the girl didn’t take revenge herself, she arranged the situation. In his book she had done nothing wrong - we have a more amoral detective than Morse, but still a great modern potboiler

L'Appartement by Gilles Mimouni 2007-02-13 11:05:54 Wow! What a film!
L’appartement is a cool Gallic comedy thriller, which ticks all the boxes - sultry Gauloises smoking, sexy short-skirt wearing, complex plot misunderstandings. OK, you have to accept a few coincidences, but it’s worth it for the ride.
To simplify a complicated story without giving anything away, you have a protaganist who is about to get married, who catches a glimpse of an old girlfriend who just upped and left without telling him. He wants to know why…
Watch it, even if you don’t normally like French films this is a winner

Water tasting - Evian and Volvic top so far! 2007-03-02 11:42:21 Having given up wine for almost ten days I have taken up a new tasting venture - water. They all taste the same I hear you cry, but do they? What are the differences between all the bottled waters on the shelves? Do they taste different to tap water?
This taste test will take place over time, but preliminary results are as follows:
Perrier: very bubbly, chalky taste. Slightly dries the mouth and leaves a dry, slightly unpleasant sensation
San Pellegrino: less bubbles, and more watery (if that’s possible). Also slightly chalky
Evian: Crisp, very hard to distinguish any taste at all.
Volvic: Very hard to tell from Evian. Impossible in a blind tasting.
Tap water: To much chlorine. Unpleasant after the others.
That’s it so far. But we will be trying other water brands and re-tasting the above to see how our palates change. Hopefully we will start picking up more in the waters we drink.

The Great Global Warming Swindle - Channel 4 TV documentary about climate change 2007-03-09 10:58:40 Intriguing new documentary broadcast on Channel
4 (UK) last night. I know that a good percentage of you regular readers don’t live in the UK so a recap: Martin Durkin analyzed the global warming argument, noting that it is taken as an orthodoxy and looking to see if there were any dissenting voices in the scientific community.
There were.
His suggestion, backed up by many scientists was that Co2(Carbon dioxide) and the earth’s temperature are correlated, but that the relationship is the opposite way round to that assumed by the global warming lobby. ie - it is the rising of the temperature of the earth that produces more Co2 emmissions.
Why is this?
Because the main producer and storer of Co2 on earth are the oceans. As the temperature drops they can absorb more Co2 and as the temperature rises they emit more Co2. And the size of the oceans and therefore the size of these amounts make man-made Co2 emmissions appear tiny.
Scientists lined up to say that if global warming Read more:Global

Food on TV 2 - Giles Coren Times Food critic stars in advert for Bird’s Eye 2007-03-10 21:47:13 The second surprise on TV this week was seeing Giles Coren, food critic of the Times
fronting an advert for Bird’s Eye. I enjoy many of Coren’s articles and was horrified to see him as the face of a big bland food company. His columns stand for fresh, local, organic, sustainable food, small producers, knowing the name of the cow you are eating. However you cut it , advertising for Bird’s eye is a strange choice. Maybe he knows something we don’t.
Giles, let’s have an explanation! I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt, so what was your thinking?!

Food on TV 1 - prime chicken breast for cats UK advert 2007-03-10 21:36:04 What has this country come to? I put on the TV and caught the end of an advert - a hand emptied a small pot on a plate and as the pot was lifted away there was a delicate pile of chicken left that looked delicious. ‘Prime chicken breast…’ said the voice over, then added that it was a cat food. A cat food! There are people in this country feeding their pets prime
chicken breast? Enough that there is a such cat food made? You can almost hear our decadence notching up another level. How many pets are being fed better than people?

Cricket World Cup starts in West Indies 2007-03-12 09:21:13 The cricket world cup has kicked off in the West Indies
- 47 days of cricketing excellence to enjoy. If you don’t know much about cricket then the world cup is an ideal place to start, because it is the limited-overs version of cricket, so there will be no draws (though possibly a tie or two) and the whole action will be finished in a few hours. When you’re a real aficionado you can move on to test matches which last five days!
47 days does seem a bit too long for a sports tournament to last. Will the enthusiasm and excitement stay that long?
Teams:
Australia
Bangladesh
Bermuda
Canada
England
India
Ireland
Kenya
Netherlands
New Zealand
Pakistan
Scotland
South Africa

Skype - part of the internet that is not only English 2007-03-12 00:46:15 I’m amazed at how the Skype
cast is part of the internet where English
doesn’t seem to be entirely prevalent. Looking at the list of current skypecasts, out of 20 skypecasts 13 are non English. And one of those in English is about immigration to the EU.

Rugby Six Nations - Wales were robbed 2007-03-12 00:39:34 Wales
were robbed
of a draw against Italy. The referee told the players they had long enough left to kick to touch and then take the line out, so they did that (because they were going for the win) instead of kick a penalty which would have given them the draw. And when the ball went out for the lineout, the referee blew for time. A blatant contradiction of what he had said to the players. If they had known that there wasn’t time they would have taken the 3 points.
The problem seems to be an unexpected result of introducing more than one referee - who is actually in charge of calling the time? Surely it is the ref on the pitch and if he has said there is x seconds left then there has to be. It must now be made clear to officials that the ref is totally in control.
So what about Wales? What recompense can be made to them? They most definitely have had a draw stolen from them - and in sport careers and jobs depend on results.
Replay the match!

Skypecast and skype and conference calls! 2007-03-12 00:09:55 We took the plunge and downloaded skype and wow, it works! Not only could we soon have a cheap conference
call with several people (which was great until we realised we had nothing to have a conference call about) we also go involved in skypecasts. One advantage over normal phones is you can see what is going on, you have a whole computer screen full of info, which means it can be more user friendly than the phones I grew up with.
Skypecasts are like big chat rooms where people from all over the world are talking about all sorts of subjects. It’s stunningly simple. If I were you I would give it a go - it’s free to get skypecasting and meeting people from all over, so hop over to skype and have a looksee. (No pressure. If you don’t want to then by all means don’t).

Israel - analysis of British and US media attitudes to Israeli policy 2007-03-20 13:56:09 This is a thought provoking video concerning the differing US and Britishmediaattitudes
to Israel
i policy. Basically Britain points out what is illegal, that Palestinians have their homes demolished because they don’t have permits, but that it is almost impossible for a Palestinian to get a permit. The US media defends and legitimizes the occupations and abuses.
Of course these are generalisations, but they are important facts.
Let the debate begin.

Jane Austen season - Northanger Abbey 2007-03-26 12:05:06 Another Jane Austen
two-hour adaption to finish the the weekend, and another rollicking blast from the start. Austen’s text is ‘helped’ to become more 21st century by Andrew Davies (Mr Darcy, etc etc) although whether this is necessary is not certain - Austen’s themes are universal and remain the same today as when she was writing.
Lightened and simplified as television generally must, the plot romps along, though always clearly marking where it is heading. Felicity Jones (previously heard on the Archers!) is if anything too pretty to play Catherine, and shows the simple sensibility of her character very well. JJ Feild makes a great Henry Tilney, not allowing himself to smoulder, but attracting Catherine with his intellect.
Another great Austen diversion from ITV - catch it if you can on repeats.

You kept it locked in your mind and its importance made it impossible to forget.

for
boring, stupid tasks. And we forget them all and panic.
Where did I write that down?
And what’s my username?

Twitter - the 21st century novel? 2007-04-16 13:54:29 Twitter
is the current internet buzz, but for once it is not all hype. Twitter sounds - and is - incredibly simple. It allows people to send 140 character messages that everyone can see. This is an immediate means of disseminating information around the web. It is in real time, it does not involve anyone visiting your site to get the information.
In the past people have read novel
s to help see the world from other perspectives and experience life through other people’s eyes. Twitter allows this to happen immediately, and through the eyes of hundreds of people. Using Twitter I can learn what everyday life is like for people in China, New Zealand, Poland…This is a completely new possibility and one that may become extremely important as means of instant, global person-person contact.
