Organized Travels 2007-08-01 09:39:34 By Aby Garvey
Ah vacation…time to relax, get away from it all and really enjoy the good stuff in life. You leave your worries behind, and with any luck at all…not your toothbrush! But how to remember it all and how to pack it so you can find it when you need it? Simple: when you go on vacation take along some of the same organizing principles you use to stay organized at home. Then, just sit back, relax and enjoy…
Here’s how:
Use a checklist. Checklists are fantastic memory joggers, and are especially helpful for staying organized when doing something you do infrequently. The less often you travel, the more important it is to have a reliable and thorough travel checklist. Start by downloading my travel checklist and modify it to suit your travel needs. Then, add to the checklist after each trip to customize it even further.

Did God Really Say? 2007-07-31 07:08:34 “Ask…in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NIV
When severe drought hit a small farming community in the Midwest, a local church called a prayer meeting and everybody showed up…As the pastor stood before his packed church he noticed an 11-year-old girl sitting in the front row, beaming with excitement. Lying next to her was her bright red umbrella poised for use. The beauty and innocence of this sight made him smile as he compared the faith of this child with that of the rest of the people in the room. You see, the rest of them had just come to pray for rain - she had come to see God answer! ~Bob Gass
When you pray, do you bring your umbrella? Do you expect an answer? The greatest power the devil has over you is to cause you to wonder, to doubt what God has promised you. In fact the first sin began with a simple seed of doubt. The serpent asked Eve “Did God really say…?” The question is will God
Peroxide: A Cleaning Miracle? 2007-08-08 07:24:24 I received an email recently about the multiple uses for Peroxide. I knew some were true, because I have used it for some of the purposes listed (i.e. canker sores), but I tested some of the others and found that it really does work! My sister, for example, tried putting it on a blood stain in her carpet, and an old yellow throw up stain from her dog, and she said it bubbled just like on a wound, and then completely dissolved the stains. The throw up was old, and had been treated before! She said, “I have been wasting my money on more expensive spot cleaners”. So here are some of the tips that I have found really work with Peroxide which is very cost effective (we are talking 50 cents to a dollar a bottle)
1- It is a great treatment for kids”boo-boos” because it does not sting, plus they love to watch it bubble.Yet it is very strong. My mom used it on a Post surgical open wound on me when I was young, and that was the only disinfectant she used.

Battlefield of the Mind…Choosing to Think Positive 2007-08-07 06:49:20 I am currently reading Joyce Meyer’s book “Battlefield of the Mind”. Today, I simply want to share an excerpt from this book. It has already shown me so much about my thought life. I hope this helps you, and possibly encourages you to go get the book.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7
Positive
minds produce positive lives. Negative minds produce negative lives. Positive thoughts are always full of faith and hope. Negative thoughts are always full of fear and doubt&hellip
; Many years ago, I was extremely negative. I always say that if I thought two positive thoughts in a row my mind would get in a cramp. My whole philosophy on life was this: “If you don’t expect anything good to happen, then you won’t be disappointed when it doesn’t.”
When I really began to study the Word and to trust God to restore me, one of the first things I realized was that the negativism had to go. In Matthew 8:13 Jesus tells u
How Did You Get Your Husband To Let You Do That? 2007-08-06 08:07:24 I am back and in full swing of routine and family life. If you are a regular reader you know that I took last week for a girls beach trip for the first time since I have been married. Kelly (From Journey’s With Kelly) joined me, her first girls trip in 13 years! We had quite the group. Three of us were married with children, one who is married no children, and one who is single and wish she was in any of our shoes.
If you ever get the opportunity to take a trip like this, make it with your life long friends for sure! We had a wonderful time reconnecting, remembering and relaxing. The great thing about those who have known you all your life, you truly can let your hair down and relax. The first few days we were just so excited that we laughed and giggled like a group of teenagers, by the end of the week we were all so mellowed we hardly spoke on the way home.
While we were there everyone on the beach and at the pool realized we were without men or children and the most asked quest Read more:Husband
Fun Friday: Are You Smarter Than A Preschooler? 2007-08-10 07:04:32 A PRE-SCHOOL TEST FOR YOU
Which way is the bus below traveling?
To the left or to the right?
Can’t make up your mind?
Look carefully at the picture again.
Still don’t know?
Pre-schoolers all over the United States
were shown this picture asked the same question.
90% of the pre-schooler’s gave this answer.
“The bus is traveling to the left.”
When asked, “Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?” They answered: “Because you can’t see the door to get on the bus.”
How do you feel now ???…I know, me too.

A Fresh flowing River 2007-08-14 02:19:43 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38 NIV)
Yesterday, a friend of mine called me to check on me. Wanted to see if I was o.k. since I sent my daughter to her first day of kindergarten. (More details and pics. on that later.)
I said I was fine, not many tears. However, I poured some things on her about other things in my life. We both shared about what God is doing in us, and the struggles we are facing at the same time. Although, yet again, I felt as if I was the one that got the most ministering to. She encouraged me and spoke so much life into my circumstances, then showed up on my door step with flowers, among other things, God bless her!
Lately I have felt like so many have been pouring into me. When she showed up on my doorstep I cried, and told her how I didn’t expect all that she did for me. She said &ldqu Read more:River
What is Faith? 2007-08-13 02:44:46 There are a lot of answers to this question. According to Paul in Hebrews 11:1 “…faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” I have heard this verse all my life. I know that in essence faith sees and knows what the human eye does not. Because I have grown up in faith it is something I have a hard time explaining in simple terms, honestly I have a hard time understanding it in simple terms. It sort of takes faith to understand faith.
I know it may seem I am not making sense, today. But that is sort of my point. It is hard to know if you are walking in faith when struggling through a circumstance. The thoughts of doubt. The voices of “reason” both externally and internally all scream at you. Then you become frustrated that you are now doubting again. Oh what a game that is played. I am not even sure how much of the game involves the attack of the enemy, and how much is our own doing. Still battling that one out as well. Read more:Faith
Is Mcdonald’s Brainwashing Our Children? 2007-08-16 02:11:51 There was a recent article in the Chicago Sun Times telling of the effect the “Golden Arches” has on our kids.
“Even carrots, milk and apple juice tasted better to the kids when they were wrapped in the familiar packaging of the Golden Arches.
The study had youngsters sample identical McDonald’s foods in name-brand and unmarked wrappers. The unmarked foods always lost the taste test.”
Of course this article leads to blame Mcdonald’s for advertising to kids. Sure, I will go along with that…a little. The spokesman for Mcdonald’s said “The fact is, parents make the decisions for their children and our research confirms that we’ve earned their trust as a responsible marketer based on decades of delivering the safest food,” (Walt Riker) HA HA HA!
I agree with one point Mr. Riker made, The parents make the decisions for their children. Now, I take my kids to Mcdonald’s occasionally. But I would like to point out that ch Read more:Brainwashing

Everyday is a New Beginning! 2007-08-21 09:49:50 God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3: 22-23 TM)
Last week I watched an episode of Oprah with Sheryl Crow. They asked several ladies to answer the question “What do you know for sure”. One answer was that she knows that we can always start again. Everyday you have the chance to start over no matter where you are in your life.
Everyday God’s mercies are new. Every morning we awake to a new world. No matter where your world was yesterday, your circumstances can change today. God can strengthen you today, God can bring the breakthrough in your life today. Today you can have the patience with your child you lost yesterday, and you can have the right attitude toward your spouse. Today is a new day and the mistakes we made yesterday are gone.
The weariness from yesterday does not have to follow into today, but you can find merc Read more:New Beginning

Kids Say The Darndest Things! 2007-08-25 10:11:52 Sorry this is late ladies, my husband was supposed to publish yesterday for me since he had my computer, but he forgot. I hope it brings a good laugh to your weekend. See you Monday.
Emily has started Kindergarten. She loves her teacher, and loves her school. Last week her assignment was to memorize a verse: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble” (Psalm 46:1) At first when we began working with her on it, she would get irritated and say she didn’t want to do it. Then she came home one day from school to inform me that we had to do something. “About what?” I asked. “My memory verse, mama, you are not going to believe this. We had a boys against girls competition today to see who knew their memory verse, and the boys won. We cain’t (southern for can’t ) be havin’ that. AND they got the candy, uh- uh” I laughed, but by the end of the night, she knew it.
The next day I asked her if she could
Tips on Making Dinner Easy 2007-08-23 02:39:39 Yesterday I talked about the importance of gathering around the dinner table. The biggest reason people do not is because of time. They do not feel they have enough time to prepare a meal. There are lots of ways to cut time and effort, remember it is the time spent at the dinner table not the time preparing it. There is an entire industry dedicated to helping you create Meals in a hurry. (Ever heard of Rachel Ray? Her site not only provides you with the recipes but the grocery list itself) Here are some tips to help you save time on cooking so you can spend more time talking.
Make one grocery trip a week. Keep an ongoing list on the fridge. Once a week before going to the store, create your menu for the week, and list the items you need for those recipes. This means you will have the ingredients needed without having to run to the grocery store in the middle of the week. Saving time!

The Family That Eats Together Stays Together 2007-08-22 07:15:16 The school year has begun for us, and most everyone at this point. Back to routine, activities, and so many things that tend to pull us in all different directions. My children are still young, so it is easier to limit their activities. However, making time for the family to be together can sometimes be difficult. One of the things we try to do most nights of the week is sit together at the dinner table, no phone calls allowed. (I am not always batting a thousand, but most nights)
While my mom always cooked dinner for me, we did not always sit at the dinner table and talk. My husband on the other hand did with his family. We have tried to uphold this tradition, but when a pastor friend pointed out a few statistics, it became even more important. Facts like:
“a 2004 study of 4,746 children 11 to 18 years old, published in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, found that frequent family meals were associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking and using marijuana Read more:Family
Glazed Salmon 2007-08-29 02:43:31 The recipe today comes from one of my favorite Recipe books, “Weight Watchers 5 Ingredient, Fifteen Minutes”. They have several books of this title, and each one I have always has excellent, and easy recipes. Even if you do not “do” Weight Watchers these recipes are healthy, delicious, and fast. (All of which are so important) So if you are looking for some new recipe ideas, you can pick up one of their magazines/ books, and you will not be disappointed. They even include Nutritional Info. for each Recipe, which I will include with this one as an example.
This particular recipe, Glazed

Signs Of A Kindergartener 2007-08-28 02:49:54 I found a great site called family education. They had some terrific advice, and tips. The one I found particularly interesting was one on Kindergartener’s. The very first piece of advice was very befitting to my daughter and where she is right now. She only wants to do what she knows she can do, and when she knows how to do it, I am not to go over it again. As was the example in last week’s Fun Friday. She did not want to work on her memory verse because she could not do it perfect. If you have a Kindergartener you may be interested in these tips. And no matter what age your child is, you can find some interesting facts on familyeducation.com
The average five-year-old is enthusiastic, helpful, and conforming. He:
Attempts only things he knows he can do.
Needs attention, affection, and praise.
Is energetic and fidgety.
Has a short attention span.
May show opposite extremes of behavior.
May become less well-behaved as the school year progresses.

Everlasting Love 2007-08-27 13:27:57 Today, I would like to share a song with you. Last week, I heard it and loved it. Listen to the worship of this song. No matter what we are walking through; This to shall pass, but God will remain.

For All Of Us Who Attempt To Work Out! 2007-08-31 02:43:46 Dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine. Have a great weekend!
Dear Diary,
For my sixtieth birthday this year, my daughter Rachel (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.
Although I am still in great shape since being a high school softball champion 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.
I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.
MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Belinda gave me a tour
Potty Training 2007-08-30 02:30:21 It has been awhile since I have talked about Potty Training
, and since I am facing this dilemma with my now 2 1/2 year old, I thought it would be a great time to bring it up. Last year I wrote about Potty Training
here, and listed some great tips. Since I have started with my dear little one (note the sarcasm) I decided to read my own advice.
There are some interesting ideas about Potty training. The most recent phenomenon is the “diaper-free” movement. The Associated Press wrote an interesting article about it Here is a little of the article:
Dominic is a product of a growing “diaper-free” movement founded on the belief that babies are born with an instinctive ability to signal when they have to answer nature’s call. Parents who practice the so-called “elimination communication” learn to read their children’s body language to help them recognize the need, and they mimic the sounds that a child associates with the bathroom.

You Have To Believe It To See It! 2007-09-25 13:31:19 Walt Disney’s widow was being interviewed after the completion of Disney World in Florida. The reporter remarked, “Isn’t it a shame that your husband never got to see this?” Mrs. Disney quickly corrected him. “He did see it. That is why it is here!”
“I’ll believe it when I see it, the ultimate cynic’s response. The problem is they will not see it until they believe it. So many of us have been disappointed in believing for things that did not happen. We have believed for the impossible, against what others told us, and then felt foolish when it didn’t happen the way we thought it would. Those moments can sometimes define us, some call it a little wiser for lesson learned. I, myself, hurt because of even the slightest cynicism that has creeped into my thinking from past disappointments. I know that in order to be all that God has called me to be, I will always have to believe the impossible and see in my heart what is not yet visible t
Love Your Neighbor (and Your Children) As Yourself 2007-09-24 05:35:57 In Campus Life a young nurse tells of a patient called Eileen. A cerebral aneurysm had left her with no conscious control over her body. The doctors thought she was totally unconscious, unable to feel pain, unaware of anything going on around her. It was the hospital staff’s job to turn her every hour to prevent bedsores, and to feed her twice a day through a stomach tube. “When it’s this bad,” an older nurse told her, “You have to detach yourself emotionally.” As a result Eileen came to be treated as a thing, a vegetable. But the young student nurse decided to treat her differently. She talked to Eileen, sang to her, and even brought her little gifts. One Thanksgiving Day she said to Eileen, “It was supposed to be my day off, but I couldn’t miss seeing you on Thanksgiving. Just then the telephone rang. As the nurse turned to answer it she looked quickly back at the patient: “Eileen was looking at me…crying. Big damp circles Read more:Neighbor

The Humiliation of Parenting… 2007-09-21 13:52:43 Kids often imitate their parents when they play. You’ll see little girls acting like little mommies and little boys acting like their dad. Unfortunately, you’ll also see little ones imitating parental flaws. ~ Lisa Barker
So I was searching for some laughter today, and I found an interesting site. (Very interesting by the way) She wrote a post called “One Smart Family”, I had to check it out.

Healthy Lunches for Kids 2007-09-20 07:52:28 There is a lot of discussion about school lunches, and the quality of nutrition. Schools do have to follow a form of dietary nutrition such as vegetable, fruit, meat, etc. However, the fruit cup is soaked in sugar, and not to mention the fat content and preservatives. While I realize that a lot of times in public schools lunches are provided to those who can not afford to buy their own, the best choice for those that can is to prepare your child’s lunch at home to ensure the quality of nutrition.
When I took a healthy cooking class last fall, we asked our instructor about healthy lunches for our kids. My sister said her daughter would only eat PB&J’s everyday. Tracy, our instructor, said “If that is all they eat, and you buy the all natural peanut butter and the all natural jelly with Whole wheat (or organic) bread, then they have protein and fiber, with low sugar. Add a fruit, and you have a balanced lunch.” It is not about variety, it is about quality. If
Just a Few Thoughts… 2007-09-19 07:04:40 This morning as I was getting Emily ready for school, she did not want to tuck her shirt in (which is dress code for her school). I told her she has to tuck her shirt in. She argued that some of the other kids in her class do not tuck their shirts in. Now I know this seems to be a minor issue, although in the later grades they can get written up for not tucking their shirts in, but it was still a teachable moment. After thinking a moment I told her “It is better to Follow the Rules than The Crowd”. Though some may disregard a simple rule because they think it is silly, or aggrivating , it is a purposed rule for a reason.
It has not been long now since the headmaster at our school had to send out an email to all the parents concerning car pool issues. Some of the parents were not only disregarding the guidelines, but telling the teachers “what for” in the process of being corrected. I thought to myself what a shame. These parents are showing their children that Read more:hellip

A Marathon Adoption of Epic Proportions…Are You My Mother? 2007-09-17 05:16:24 I bet you thought I was on a permanent vacation. Wishful thinking for us all. I did go to the beach with my gal pals in August. It was FABULOUS! I highly recommend R&R for all you ladies. It has done wonders for my outlook on life. When I decided that I would go on this long needed girl trip, I had 2 things that I was really looking to hear answers from the Lord about. One of those things was dealing with some emotional issues regarding my marathon adoption. I can’t say that I walked away from Panama City with all the answers, but I can say that God definitely gave me something to ponder.
Here is what I am pondering and praying for more revelation about even today. I truly believe that God destines each and every child to be in a family, whether biologically or by adoption. So….If this is my belief then I must trust God that He has and will equip me to be my children’s mother. Being a mother long distance brings a whole new meaning to this for me. Fun Friday: 2007-09-14 05:54:00 Though my husband is not quite as “challenged” as the following, my sweet brother at 25 years old has had to call my sister a few times when my mom is out of town to ask her how to do laundry. You know, whites, lights, and darks, and what settings to wash them on. ( As good of a daddy I know my brother will be, I pity the woman who has to clean up after him. He has had two older sisters and a mother to care for him. It is going to be a super woman who can pick up the slack that it has taken three women to manage. ) I feel sure I will receive an email or phone call from his wife one day, sharing this scenario:
One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his Sweat- shirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, “What setting do I use on the washing machine?” “It depends,” I replied. “What does it say on your shirt?” He yelled back, “Clemson University.&rdqu Read more:Friday
