Enough With Hillary Clinton
2007-03-01 19:34:00
I can't figure out why, for the life of me, anyone really thinks Hillary Clinton can get elected president. Besides the fact she's Hillary Clinton , she hasn't exactly had the most honest and straightforward campaign and her pandering on the war vote has hurt her the most (especially in my book.) The last thing we need is a pandering, wishy-washy polarizing candidate...have we learned NOTHING from John Kerry? Now it has become clear that Hillary Clinton gets badly defeated against Republican front runner Rudy Giuliani in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two states the Democrats MUST win. According to Quinnipiac, She loses in New Jersey to Giuliani 50%-41% and ties McCain 45%-45%. I, personally, am still not comfortable with someone who only TIES the GOP opponent in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, it's worse, She loses to Giuliani 53%-37% and to McCain 45%-41%.So Basically, she has a lick of a chance against the equally wishy-washy McCain, but not against Giuliani. As a New Yorker, it ticks m

VA-Sen: Mark vs. John
2007-02-28 17:46:00
It would be a campaign of biblical proportions, and not just because it would be between two guys named after Gospels. A race between Virginia's popular senior Senator, a Warner, and Virginia's popular ex-governor, another Warner, in an increasingly competitive state may be around the corner. In the last few years, the longtime Republican stronghold has become...well...less of one. Democrats won two major statewide races in the last two years, winning the Governor's race in 2005 and defeating an incumbent GOP Senator in 2006.If Warner, Mark decides to run for the Senate seat in 2008, it wouldn't be the first time the two Warners faced off against each other in a Senate race. Warner, Mark, then the state Democratic chairman, ran against Warner, John in 1996 and narrowly lost 53-47%, the closest race for Warner, John in his 25 year career in the Senate.Since then, Warner, Mark has served as Governor and left office with a 75% approval rating in 2005. He was considered a strong potenti

KY Gov- Is That A Knife in Ernie Fletcher's Back?
2007-02-28 15:23:00
Kentucky's Republican Lieutenant Governor Steve Pierce has NOT endorsed his boss, Governor Ernie Fletcher for reelection this year. Instead, he has decided to endorse former US Representative Anne Northup (R-Louisville) who is running in the primary against the embattled scandal-marred Governor. Why is this so interesting? Well, Kentucky's Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected together on a ticket, like the President and Vice President. (This is how it's done here in New York.) That means the man who ran as the running mate of Ernie Fletcher in 2003 is NOT endorsing him for reelection...big deal.A recent Public Opinion Strategies poll showed the race for the GOP nod tied 39%-39%.Northup is considered the stronger GOP candidate, as Fletcher is unpopular and Northup represented the state's Democratic stronghold (Louisville) in the US House of Representatives until her narrow defeat to Democrat John Yarmuth in last year's GOP slaughter. Northup could run away with a general ele

Obama Blames America First
2007-03-02 22:45:00
Paging Jeane KirkpatrickSenator Obama says what everyone is thinking but too scared to say;"A consequence of the Administration's failed strategy in Iraq has been to strengthen Iran's strategic position; reduce U.S. credibility and influence in the region; and place Israel and other nations friendly to the United States in greater peril,"What a refreshing sound, hearing an elected official take responsibility for his leader's mistakes. For so long we've lived by the Kirkpatrick doctrine (from her famed 1984 RNC Speech,) where whatever went wrong was always someone else's fault, look at where it's got us. We, as America ns, need to start taking responsibility for the mistakes our leaders are have made in foreign affairs.Despite what the narcissistic nationalist neocons say, liberals are NOT blaming America for EVERYTHING, but many of the world's problems today can be traced to mistakes we've made and refused to admit we've made, therefore we were never allowed to remedy them.Ira

On Ann Coulter
2007-03-04 01:48:00
I don't even want to give this so-called human being the benefit of the doubt by dedicating a whole post on her, but anyone who just randomly calls a Presidential candidate a name with no point of reference for calling him that should not be taken seriously. If John Edwards was gay, it would be bad enough that she called him a "faggot," but at least she would have some frame of reference to use the world. She would've attacked a truth, albeit in a vulgar way, but the former Senator is not a homosexual, so why use the world. It was a cheap shot at somebody who is not even making headlines. It was something a 14 year-old spoiled rich brat would say...so as I would say to a 14 year-old spoiled rich princess from New Canaan, Connecticut who calls shoots her mouth off...shut the hell up! (No offense to 14 year old girls from New Canaan...loving you)Ann Coulter , like the entire right wing at the moment, is just plain desperate. The best they have is a liberal former mayor of a liberal city

May A Mayor Be President?
2007-03-03 22:54:00
As former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani attempts to make an unprecedented move from Mayor to President , I thought I'd look at where Mayors have ended up previously. In fact, many of our most well-known national politicians have been Mayors, but none have been President...at least not outright and at least not in the US.Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), the first Socialist in the US Senate was Mayor of Burlington, Vermont from 1981-1989.Ohio's Senior Senator George Voinovich, a Republican, was Governor of Ohio before serving in the Senate. Prior to that, he was Mayor of Cleveland after defeating none other than Dennis Kucinich in 1979Kucinich, now an Ohio Congressman and Presidential Candidate had one tumultuous term as Mayor of Cleveland from 1977-1979 Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, a Democrat, became a star in Pennsylvania politics after a long and rather successful term as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992-2000Virginia Governor Tim Kaine served four years as the state's Lieutena

Backup Plan? Who Needs A Backup Plan?
2007-03-05 13:53:00
What if President Bush's troops surge doesn't work? Well don't ask President Bush. Our Commander-in-Chief is so confident that his idea will work, they aren't even discussing a backup plan.and why should they? I mean it's not like every other idea the president has come up with to "win" in Iraq has failed...nope...not like we're in this mess for the mere reason he didn't come up with backup plans. There's a thin line between being confident and being just plain stupid. And how is our fearless leader's plan working so far? Just freakin' dandy!

NM-Sen: Scandal's A Brewin
2007-03-05 04:54:00
Just when you thought Senator Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico) was unbeatable...then comes thisAll Democrats need is a strong candidate and in this swing state (that may lean Democratic in 2008), and this becomes a top pickup opportunity. The worst case scenario is if Domenici decides not to run for reelection, at which case a strong Democrat would have to face off against Rep. Heather Wilson (R-Albuquerque).And I'd love to see Wilson get creamed and her House seat fall to a Democrat.More reasons to see Bill Richardson become the Democratic nominee for President...a scandal and coattails in his home state..sweet.UPDATE: It now appears Wilson is also implicated in this...could it be true? With Heather Wilson, it wouldn't surprise me.

NY-29: Massa Part Deux
2007-03-05 01:25:00
Eric Massa, the 2006 Democratic candidate for the New York 29th district is running again in 2008.Massa came ever so close to unseating freshman Randy Kuhl in New York's most Republican district, located in the Southern Tier along the Pennsylvania border between the Finger Lakes and the Buffalo Metro area.Massa scored 48% against Kuhl in 2006, winning the southern suburbs of Rochester (the most densely populated part of the district,) but losing everywhere else. What are Massa's chances in a second round? Well, it depends on the political situation of the country in 2008 and who the Presidential candidates are. A strong Republican will do well here and may save Kuhl, but another weak Republican year may push Massa over the top.Still, the GOP is going to have to pour money here, and they don't need to be pouring money into New York.

Sen. Thomas Eagleton (1929-2007)
2007-03-04 23:31:00
Former Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton has died in St. Louis at the age of 77. Eagleton is perhaps most well-known for being George McGovern's original running mate in the 1972 Presidential Election. He was forced to drop off the ticket after the Democratic National Convention because news broke that he had suffered from extreme depression that had, at one time, required him to receive electro-shock therapy. Eagleton was born in 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri. He won his first election at the age of 26 as circuit attorney in St. Louis and in 1960 at the age of 31 was elected Missouri Attorney General, he later served as Lieutenant Governor and was elected to the United State Senate in 1968 narrowly defeating Republican Tom Curtis 51%-49% largely due to his opposition to the Vietnam War. Senator Eagleton was chosen by Senator George McGovern to be his running mate after other anti-war Senators (Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, Walter Mondale of Minnesota, and Birch Bayh of Indiana) turned

Political Hero Of The Week
2007-02-10 05:37:00
OK, so this is going to be a weekly segment, called Nick's Political Hero of the Week...a politician or someone involved in politics who I feel made a big impact this week. It's odd that for the first segment, it would be a tie, but I have my reasons. This week, I give you;Senator Jon Tester (D-Montana)Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York)In an age when people feel so disconnected from their politicians, that we don't have believe they are serving us in Washington or in our respective state capitals, these two pioneering freshman decided to let everyone, from their constituents back home to every American with a computer, know what they are doing on a given day.Senator Tester and Congresswoman Gillibrand are the first members of Congress to publicly release their daily schedule. Thanks to the Internet, we can all know what meetings the Senator and the Congresswoman is attending, with whom they are meeting, when they will be on the House or Senate floor, when they are in commi

Rudy: The Beginning Of The End
2007-03-06 05:43:00
Just when you thought Rudy was on top of the world...here comes sonny boy.I guess Rudy doesn't really understand the way a national campaign works. Privacy for your family, not in this country Mr. G...sorry."I believe that these problems with blended families, you know, are challenges _ sometimes they are," he said. "The more privacy I can have for my family, the better we are going to be able to deal with all these difficulties."Yes Rudy and that solves your problem here in New York, where none of us can care less, but in Georgia, Utah, Alabama, Oklahoma...well you're "blended" family is pretty much a complete disregard for what they call "moral values." I don't even think "America's Mayor" can overcome those types of voters. My Prediction: They'll be another Presidential Candidate from Massachusetts next year...just not from the party you'd think.

The End Of The Bush Doctrine
2007-03-06 02:17:00
George W. Bush's bright idea of staging preemptive wars may see it's endSenator Jim Webb (D-Virginia) has introduced a bill that would bar the President from taking military action against Iran without Congressional approval. Basically the bill explains that the President can only stage a war against Iran (or any other country) with a declaration of war from Congress...kinda like what it says in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the United States Constitution. It's a complete repudiation of the Bush Doctrine, which advocates preemptive wars (or as I call it, Wars of Paranoia)No more "police action" crap. The President has the power to regulate a war as Commander-in-Chief, but only after Congress gives him the authority to do it, only after Congress does their Constitutionally mandated function of declaring war.The chances of this passing are good, but the chances of it becoming law are not. The Republicans will argue it gives Iran reason to agitate the United States, knowing the Pr

Jock For Congress
2007-03-07 09:03:00
With rumors flying that former New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter may consider running for the House of Representatives against New England's lone Republican Congress man, Chris Shays, in the Connecticut Fourth District, I've been hearing a lot of rumbling about how dumb an idea it is to run a professional athlete for elected office. It's not as uncommon as you might think...Plenty of former jocks turned to the political arena after retiring; One of the most famous examples is Bill Bradley, the former New York Knicks basketball star had a successful career as a Democratic United States Senator from New Jersey from 1979-1997. He unsuccessfully challenged Al Gore in 2000 for the Democratic nomination for PresidentFootball Players have fared pretty well;Former Buffalo Bills star Jack Kemp made a bigger name for himself as a member of the Republican Party, first representing New York in the House of Representatives from 1971-1989. He represented a suburban Buffalo district. He later serv

One Last Gasp from The Culture of Corruption
2007-03-07 00:30:00
Earlier I spoke of how New Mexico's two most vulnerable Republicans shot themselves in the foot. This is the best;"He (Sen. Domenici) said, 'Are these going to be filed before November?' " former federal prosecutor David Iglesias, one of eight U.S. attorneys summarily fired in recent months, told the panel. "I said I didn't think so. And to which he replied, 'I'm very sorry to hear that.' And then the line went dead."The Culture of Corruption was still around in October 2006 when this occurred.I'm kinda surprised by Domenici over this, I didn't think he was that bad. Heather Wilson, on the other hand, doesn't surprise me. I like her excuse, "I was checking something out for a constituent"...cute Heather, very cute. I'm sure you were not trying to find someway to save your ass, since you only one reelection by 850 votes or so.Just for those who are curious, here's a list of the federal prosecutors who were fired;Carol Lam- Southern District of CaliforniaDavid Iglesias- Distri

The GOP Eugene McCarthy?
2007-03-08 23:48:00
Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska is expected to announce Monday if he's running for President or not...my guess is, he is.Hagel is among the sharpest Republican critics of the Iraq war and supports many of the Democrats' proposals to withdraw troops and end the war.Hagel has been compared to Senator Eugene McCarthy (D-Minnesota), who led opposition to the Vietnam War during Lyndon Johnson's presidency. McCarthy was one of the first major Democrats to oppose Vietnam and ran against fellow Minnesotan Hubert Humphrey for the 1968 Democratic Presidential Nomination, before losing his anti-war monopoly to New York Senator Bobby Kennedy.Hagel is pretty much alone in his staunch anti-war position in the Senate. Although there are other Republicans, such as Gordon Smith of Oregon and Olympia Snowe of Maine, who are becoming frustrated and have lost faith in the Iraq policy, they aren't planning on running for President. (Smith is going to have a hard enough time keeping his Senate seat.)Alt

Post-Election Party Switching
2007-03-08 17:40:00
After the 1994 Election s, when the Republicans took control of Congress, a large number of Democrats left their party and became Republicans. In Congress, most of those party switchers were from the south, such as Senators Richard Shelby of Alabama, Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado and Congressmen Greg Laughlin of Texas, Jimmy Hayes and Billy Tauzin of Louisiana, Mike Parker of Mississippi and Nathan Deal of Georgia. Now that the Democrats have taken over Congress, will we see an exodus from the Republicans? Possibly; One of the first rumored party switchers is not from a Democratic area, raher the south of all places, it's Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina. The Hill reports Jones, who is strongly opposed to the Iraq War and joined the Democrats in opposing the troops surge, is being courted to become a Democrat. Jones, who represents a district in North Carolina that includes the Outer Banks, is the son of a former Democratic Representative from his state and used to be a D

Welcome To Two Years Ago
2007-03-08 16:26:00
No military solution for Iraq, says General PetraeusGuess what, we already figured that out a long time ago. It's nice to see the administration catching up with what the rest of the country learned a while back. This administration is like two years behind the rest of the country.Remember "stay the course"Meanwhile, Democrats are looking to pull the troops out by the next election. Republicans will argue the Democrats are doing it for political reasons, and maybe so, but it does give the President until the end of the year to figure out if this is working or not. The perk of the plan is that it pulls the troops out of Iraq right before the next elections, giving the Democrats enough political ammo to keep their majority in the next election.Either way, it does appear to me that the Iraq War is entering it's final stages...and that's a good thing.
