Dr. William
Wynn Westcott was born in Leamington, Warkwickshire, England on December 17, 1848. Dr. Westcott's parents died when he was 10 years old and he was adopted by his uncle who, like his father, was a medical doctor. Dr. Westcott attended Kingston Grammar School at Kingston-upon-Thames?, and graduated from University College, London with a Bachelor in Medicine. He soon went into medical practice with his uncle in Soberest. Dr. Westcott was described by associates of his time as "docile, scholarly, industrious, addicted to regalia and histrionics." He seems to have had no "girlfriends" in the ordinarily accepted sense, but had a great many "platonic" friendships with female initiates.

Societas Rosicruciana is a name used by a number of Rosicrucian groups. Several of them derive from the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, founded in 1866 by Robert Wentworth Little (1840-1878) in England. Rather unusually for a Rosicrucian organization, it requires a candidate for membership to be a Christian and a Master Mason, which incidentally limits its membership to males. William Wynn Westcott, also associated with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, was Supreme Magus from 1892 until his death in 1925.

The Ancient Order of Druids in America is descended from the Ancient Archaeological Order of Druids (AAOD) founded in 1874 by Robert Wentworth Little, an English Mason and Rosicrucian. Little is perhaps better known as the founder of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA), the immediate predecessor of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Little's Order drew on nearly two centuries of previous Druid orders in Britain. While many of the original members of the AAOD were Masons, Masonic membership was not originally required for admission.
