Remove Ads in yahoo messanger
2007-07-31 03:57:00
I went into the system registery and found out that Yahoo! moved the 'banner url' key to a slightly different location. Than what it used in version 5.5!Yahoo! IM no longer uses 'YUrl', but uses 'View' instead. You gotta click on each key inside of 'View' and edit the 'banner url' string to anything you want... I simply cleared mine out completely and it works flawlessly! Here is what you gotta do:Run regeditGoto HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Yahoo -> Pager -> ViewInside the 'View' key there are a several other keys... go through each one and edit the 'banner url' string to your liking. It even works if the string is left blank (this causes it to look as if ads were never even implemented)!Restart Yahoo! IM for the effect to take hold. This is great for Yahoo! IM 5.6 users who don't want to be bothered with ads.

Change The Default Location For Installing Applications.
2007-08-05 02:54:00
As the Hard sizes are increasing we are using Partition system in our Operating system. As when we install any program in our computer it automatically assigns"C:Program Files" directory for installation. This causes a lots space problem in our HDD.XP uses the C:Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.Go to :-- Start > Run- Type “regedit” (without “” NOOBS!)- Go to this directory…HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion- Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default, this value will be C:Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and now XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.happy installiation...  :D

Change Text on XP Start Button
2007-08-10 09:23:00
Step 1 - Modify Explorer.exe FileIn order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.get this from www.delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zipThe first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:Windowsexplorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:Windowsexplorer.exe.The category we are going to be using is "String Table". Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and e

Clear Recent files in Windows Media Player
2007-08-08 01:04:00
This tip requires a change to the Windows Registry. Please see "How to Backup Your Registry" if you are new to the Windows Registry.Windows Media Player (WMP) is a built-in application that allows you to play multimedia files . Like many other applications, WMP remembers the most recently played files and displays them in the Recent File List under the File menu. This feature is useful if you regularly play certain files, but you may want to clear the list if you share the computer and a user account or create archives and CDs.There are two ways you can clear the list:I. The Clear MRU.exe Utility is available for free in the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack from Microsoft, but Microsoft does not support this tool.II. You can also manually delete the list through the Windows Registry:1. Start the Windows Registry Editor, regedit.exe, by typing regedit in the Windows Run Command Line.2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMediaPlayerPlayerRecentFileList.3. Delete the RecentFileLis

Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts:
2007-08-10 18:20:00
First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Reboot ing your PC"Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes their use.I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:shutdown -s -t 03 -c "Bye Bye m8!"shutdown -r -t 03 -c "Ill be back m8 ;)!"SwitchWhat it does-sShuts down th

Hardware tips and tricks for Windows, Macs and Linux PCs
2007-08-19 08:20:00
This week I have more of my special tips and tricks , this time concentrating on hardware tips for all computer users. 1. Get rid of bad vibes. Put your computer where it won't be subject to vibration, shaking or accidental kicks. They can mess up your hard drive. If it's on top of your desk, make sure your desk can't rock (even slightly) from side to side or front to back; prop up any short legs if you need to. If it's on the floor, make a solid platform out of concrete blocks covered by a velvet cloth or an old sheet, whichever looks better. 2. Keep it cool. Don't cut off the flow of air to your computer. Depending on the design, your computer draws air in through vents in the front, sides or bottom. Keep everything at least an inch away from obvious vents. (Bonus tip: If your computer starts running hot, don't take off the case in an attempt to give it more airflow. That usually diffuses the air too much. Instead, find out why it's running hot and get it fixed.) 3. Save ele

Protecting your kids online with Web Filters
2007-08-19 08:19:00
You have kids, you have a computer with an internet connection, the two put together = trouble! I don't mean to understate this point, because when it comes down to it, you, the parents, are the the one that has to take responsibility for your children and what they view. I'm generally pretty harsh on parents that think that nothing can happen on the internet...while the internet feels "safe" because it's in your house, what bad thing could happen? Well, read the newspapers and see what can happen with the "safe" internet. If you're going to have a net connection you need to be responsible and make sure your kids are safe online . So, here are some programs that will help you monitor what your kids are up to:iProtectyou - This is one of the best programs on the net at the moment to stop your kids from seeing objectionable material and unmonitored chat and email sessions. This program is FREE so download it. This program allows you to control which websites your kids are allow

Formatting Your Hard Drive
2007-08-19 08:18:00
Sometimes you just have to format. I equate it to a baptism for your computer, you are washing away all the sins from it, making it new, fresh, giving it a new beginning. I know people feel formatting can be a traumatic experience, but if it's any comfort to you, most computer pros format their computers more often then most beginners. The difference is: Computer Geeks can get their computer up and running in an hour after a format (maybe less time than that) and a beginner might get it up and running in 4 to 5 hours (sometimes longer). So let me walk you through the important things you should do before, during, and after a format:Pre-Format steps (The stuff before you go nuts and format):Backup your important data - Just because you have to format doesn't mean you have to lose everything on your computer. Backup outlook, important documents, downloads, just about anything you can burn to a disk that will make your computer like home again. Just think of this step as if you'

The Great Browser Question - Which to use?
2007-08-19 08:18:00
What is a browser? Simplest possible terms it's the program that allows you to surf web pages. For most people that use Windows their browser of choice is Internet Explorer, but why? Well, simple answer to that is that it comes built in with your Windows system and it's highly integrated (perhaps too much so) into the Windows operating system. For most people IE is just fine and you don't really need another browser, but did you know that there are other browsers out there? Did you know some of them have really cool features? Well, there is this brave new world of browsers out there and it's time that you take a look and test drive other browsers, after all, just because you have Windows doesn't mean that you have to use IE. Here is the breakdown of what's out there at the momentMozilla - Oh, you gotta love open source, it sometimes produces the best programs out there and Mozilla is a happy result of this open source community. So, let's do a brief little history on Moz

These are a list of programs to help you mess around with you registry settings. Backing up your Registry and Restoring it!
2007-08-19 08:14:00
Why backup your registry? Because you really can mess up your system editing your registry. I generally tell novice people to stay away from registry editing. Generally registry editing is for people with too much time on their hands and this real desperate urge to mess with their computer, mwhahaha, so lets gets started, umm, but first lets make a backup of the registry:Close all programs running on your desktopThen go to StartGo to Run and type regedit and hit okay. This will open this program:Go to File --->Export...This will open a box where you can save this backup registry file.Give it a file name and save it to a folder, hard drive, zip disk, backup hard drive, anywhere that this registry will be safely stored. Make sure the Export range is selected as ALLClick SaveThen make sure to send me large quantities of money (this is an optional step). Now that you have it backed up its very easy to restore, just do everything you did but when you want to restore it, just go to File

How to off / on the Autoplay CD Feature in Win XP
2007-08-19 08:11:00
The Autoplay CD feature in Win XP launches every time you put a cd in and each time it will ask you, which application or which way you would want to view this cd you installed. Now, this is a great function if you just use your CD occasionally, but when I was installing all my programs on my Win XP box, the Autoplay thing got on my nerves in a big way. Here's the best way to handle the Autoplay situation...it also allows you to customize how Autoplay will function.Go to "My Computer"Go to your CD Rom DriveRight Click and go to propertiesThe window above will open, click the autoplay tabOnce there they give you a number of options. In the box just below "Select a content type..." you can select the various file types that autoplay will run for. This is good if you want to customize your autoplay. If for example whenever a music cd is put in you want it to play automatically you just fill in the box that says: Select an action to perform---> Select play--->Hit Apply. Now wheneve

Turning off the Hibernation (No sleeping for your comp!)

For most people this function might be good, but personally, I leave my computer on all the time, it's always downloading, or working at something, and it isn't practical for my computer to take a little sleep. So, here is how you shut off this little hibernation feature:Go to your Control PanelGo to Performance and MaintenanceClick on the Power Supply OptionClick on the tab that says, "Hibernate"Unclick the box that says "Enable Hibernation"Click Okay That's all there is to it and now your computer won't go into hibernation mode when you're away from it. No sleeping computer for you

Moving The Taskbar
2007-08-19 08:04:00
I bet you didn't know that you could move your taskbar if you wanted. Mostly I leave mine at the bottom, like the rest of the population, but occasionally I feel like going wild and have the taskbar at the top of my computer. The Taskbar is that thin bar at the bottom where you can see all your open programs, the start menu, the clock, etc. Now, in WinXP they made it very nice to move it. This is how:Right Click on the TaskbarClick, Lock the Taskbar, until there is no check thereLeft Click on the task bar and move it to where you want it...it will always rest up against an edge, so top, left or right. Then click, Lock the Taskbar, again and it won't move from that spot. These are the same instructions for Windows 98, ME, 2k, only you don't have to unlock the taskbar, you just left click on it and move...this was easier, but also you sometimes accidentally moved the task bar when you didn't want it to move, ugh. Well, there you have it, now put your taskbar to the top and see if

Set up and Use Internet Connection Sharing
2007-08-19 08:00:00
With Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows XP, you can connect one computer to the Internet, then share the Internet service with several computers on your home or small office network. The Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Professional will automatically provide all of the network settings you need to share one Internet connection with all the computers in your network. Each computer can use programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express as if they were directly connected to the Internet. You should not use this feature in an existing network with Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses.Enabling ICSThe ICS host computer needs two network connections. The local area network connection, automatically created by installing a network adapter, connects to the computers on your home or small office network. The other connection, using a 56k modem, ISDN, DSL, or cable modem, connects the home or

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines
2007-08-19 07:59:00
Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines . Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :Open up the Registry and go to :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpaceUnder that branch, select the key :{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}and delete it.This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to

How to Remove Windows XP's Messenger
2007-08-19 07:59:00
Theoretically, you can get rid of it (as well as a few other things). Windows 2000 power users should already be familiar with this tweak.Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:Windows. For others, it may be E:WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger " in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE

Upgrading to Windows XP
2007-08-19 07:59:00
You can upgrade a computer that runs Windows 98, 98SE, or Me to Windows XP Home Edition. Those same versions, along with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows 2000 Professional, can be upgraded to Windows XP Professional.(1).To ensure a smooth upgrade and avoid networking problems, follow these tips before starting the upgrade:(2)Install all network cards. XP will detect them and automatically install the right drivers.(3)Have your Internet connection available. The XP setup process will connect to a Microsoft server to download the latest setup files, including changes that have been made since XP was released. Some programs are incompatible with XP and can cause networking problems. Un-install these programs. After the upgrade is complete and the network is working, re-install XP-compatible versions of these programs: Internet Connection Sharing, NAT, Proxy Server Anti-Virus Firewall.

How to Upgrade Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition Profiles to Windows XP Domain User Profiles
2007-08-19 07:55:00
This guide describes how to upgrade a Microsoft Microsoft Windows 98-based, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition -based client that has user profiles to a Microsoft Windows XP-based client. The following steps enable the Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) profiles to be retained throughout the process.Your best method to retain the profiles is to join the domain during the upgrade installation process.Otherwise, you must use a workaround method to transfer the profile information over to the Windows XP profile.During the upgrade installation process, at the networking section, the administrator is offered the choice to join a domain or a workgroup. If you join the domain at this juncture, you ensure that all the existing profiles are migrated successfully to the Windows XP-based installation. If you did not join the computer to the domain during the upgrade process, you must use the following workaround method:Join the upgraded computer to the target domain. All applicable us

Make Your Own Wallpaper
2007-08-21 02:26:00
Would you like to have one of your pictures as a desktop background? It's easier than you think!1. Figure out your screen resolution. Before you begin, you'll need to figure out what size the final image needs to be. Fortunately, this is really easy. Just right-click a blank area on your desktop and select Properties from the resulting menu. Then, click the Settings tab on the resulting screen. Look at the Screen resolution area and write down the current setting.2. OK, now you know the size you need, the next step is to pick a photo. So, head to your archives and open the photo you want to use in your favorite imaging program. I'll wait here.3. Have the photo opened? Cool. Now, adjust anything that needs adjusted (color, saturation, etc). Now, you'll need to resize the image to match your monitor resolution. This setting varies by program, but it's usually found under the Edit or Image menu in most programs. Most programs will have an option to "constrain proportions". This keeps

Avoid Win XP Re-activation
2007-08-21 02:18:00
The time may come that you'll need to reinstall your Windows XP. It could happen. Maybe you'll add a new motherboard or hard drive. Maybe you'll get constant errors and problems that just won't go away. Or perhaps you're a neat freak who wants to rid yourself of clutter and start fresh with a clean operating system. If you do reinstall Windows XP, then you'll need to re-activate it too—that is, unless you keep this tip handy ;-)See, the first time you activated XP it created a file called "wpa.dbl" that lives in the WINDOWSsystem32 folder. By creating a backup of this file on disk, you can simply put it back into the folder after reinstalling XP and avoid the whole re-activation hassle. Here's how...Go to My Computer then select your Hard Drive (usually drive C). Go to the WINDOWSsystem32 folder and scroll way down until you find the wpa.dbl fileRight-click and choose "Send To" then either Floppy Drive (make sure you have a disk in) or CD-R/RW.Now, when you reinstall Windows

Then click on Run . Enter " regedit " (no quotes), and click OK . This will bring up the registry editorUnder the My Computer directory open the HKEY_CURRENT-USER directory by double clicking it. Password Protect Folders in XP
2007-08-21 02:04:00
Do you share a computer with other users and want some extra security on your folders? There are two ways to password protect a folder built into Windows XP (for other Windows flavors, there are some freeware/shareware programs out there).#1 If you have a log in password for your account, this can be used to protect folders from other users. Your hard drive must be formatted using NTFS (which it probably is unless you're dual booting with another operating system). Here's what to do...Right-click the folder that you want to make private and choose "Properties" (or Alt+Double-click). Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the "Make this folder private" box.Click Apply . If you do not have a password on your account, a box will pop up asking if you want to assign a password. This must be done if you want to make the folder private, so click Yes . You will need to use your password to log on to your computer from then on.Type in a password then confirm it. Click the "Create Password " button
