Did someone say contest?
2008-04-15 16:32:27
I never find the time to enter contests… well, I lie. Most of the bloggers that I know don’t have contests and the blogs that do have them have a gazllion and 5 comments and I never win anything. I lie again, it’s not that I NEVER win anything. I won New Kids on the Block tickets from Q102 in Philly when I was in the 8th grade. And last month, I won a contest from Jenny at Live and In Color and she sent me the most beautiful handmade pen. Well, the pen wasn’t handmade, but the covering was. And it’s purple. And I love it. But today there are two contest, no, three that I want to tell you about…. First…. Krississippi - The Fifty First State of Confusion (does she not have the BEST name?) is hosting a contest for a Doodle Book. Do you doodle?

On NOT Being a Mother…
2008-04-15 09:00:13
There was a time that when I decided I wanted to go to bed, I would simply fall in the bed. I didn’t have to worry about lunches being packed, 5,000 Legos being picked up so that you could again walk through the living room without killing your feet, or ensure that all permission slips were signed and ready to return the next morning. Of course, those were also that times that my days extended well into the wee hours of the morning, large amounts of alcohol were consumed, and cabs were always the preference in getting home. No, there was no need to make sure the car seats were buckled in the right way, no wondering if all of the kids were in, buckled and their doors shut before pulling out of the driveway. Shopping was enjoyable as no one demanded any of my money for a toy, and no tant

The traits I’ve passed on to my daughter…
2008-04-14 23:18:39
If you look at my daughter and you look at me, you’ll notice that we look alot alike.  I often refer to her as my mini-me, as do others. I’ve passed alot of things on to her in addition to physical features… like my personality. She is me. Period. She’s manipulative.  She’s funny.  She’s outgoing.  She’s smart, oh that child is smart.  She’s stubborn.  She’s strong willed.  She’s independent.  If she’s thinking it, chances are I thought it to at some point in my life. And yes, I apologize to my parents on an ongoing basis. But tonight, I saw something else that I passed on to her.  (And yes, I’m going to brag on myself for just a little bit.) I passed on to her some mad softball skillz.  (don’t ask why

Anytime now…
2008-04-14 16:42:42
I feel like an antsy child. I am so ready for Spring to come and STAY and not just tease us with the warmer temps only to plummet back to sub-arctic temperatures… Saturday, I turned the air on just to take some of the heat out of the house.  Last night, I had the heat back on. It sucks. And playing softball tonight with the girls will be not as much fun because we’ll be trying to keep our hands warm… I just want it to be warm.  I already have the pedicure.  I’m just waiting to wear my open toed shoes! Until next time…

2008-04-13 21:24:16
Let’s see how long I can keep up with this…it seemed like a great idea at the time. If you’ll notice, right over there on the side bar, I’ve got a little link to a blog and the my blog pick of the week.   The reason I decided to do this was because there are so many great blogs out there that no one knows about… and I want to tell people about them. We all know about Chilihead and Rocks in My Dryer… Big Mama and Boo Mama… but what about those that don’t have that huge following? So I’m going to work on this… :D  Eventually, I’ll make it through the list of people that I follow.  Although, it will take me some time… :D  Maybe I’ll get creative and make a little button… as if that’s what you all ar

Have I mentioned them lately?

No… I haven’t…. Not since the 5th… and today is the 13th… so it’s been awhile… Have you heard the new single they are coming out with? If nothing else, just look at the pictures… But what do you think? I kinda like it… Until next time…

That’s Going to Leave a Mark…
2008-04-12 07:25:16
Last night Matthew and I watched We Are Marshall (because Samara couldn’t be bothered with it) and then afterwards, because it was late, we all piled into my bed to watch Alvin and Chipmunks. Never mind that all of saw this movie in the theater. I fell asleep before it was over, as did the kids, so this morning when I woke up, my queen size bed was a little cramped and I was in the middle of the kids. And it was cold because we’re retarded.  It was so hot in the house yesterday because it was so nice outside, that we had all the windows opened and the fans going.  That would’ve been fine had the temperature not dropped 20 degrees from yesterday to today and the comforter was at the bottom of the bed. I looked at the clock… 8am.   I kept telling myself that I cou

…13 year old girls with babysitting money and cell phones. I wish I could take credit for that quote as I think it’s pure genius, but I can’t.  It was said by Frank Martin on Twitter tonight.  (Are you twittering?  You should be.) It was not his time to go.  It wasn’t.  I never saw him going all the way, but I saw him going a little further than he did. I’m bummed. Really, really bummed. I guess now I’ll pull for David Cook. And while I’m on the American Idol soapbox… I watched bits and pieces of last night’s show today.  I won’t get into the whole Jesus is now a shepard in the song at the end (which, I will say that I thought it was great that they sang it regardless of that change because MILLIONS got a piece of the Word l

She’s just prepared like that…
2008-04-10 07:24:39
Do you know what my daughter and I did last night? We went shopping. Now, I abhor shopping unless I know exactly what I am going for, which was the case last night. I got a new comforter and I wanted new sheets. So, we dropped Matthew off at tutoring and went to TJ Maxx. Why don’t I go to TJ Maxx more often? They have AWESOME stuff in there. Anywho, we got the sheets and pillows and then Sam asked me if we could walk around the mall. I wanted to say no, really I did. I hate the mall and I knew that if we did she would hit me up for everything that she found. But I said yes. We’ve been struggling here of late and I thought that perhaps this would be some good girl bonding time. I let her lead the way. The first store that she hit up was Bath and Body Works. First she had

Here’s a story…of a lovely lady…

I’m bored… I’m procrastinating… and Tishia started it… blame her… Hi, my name is: Heather But you can call me: anything as long as it’s not late for dinner Never in my life have I: taken so much time to complete a stupid meme… i started this at 3:30 and it’s now almost midnight The one person who can drive me nuts is: Samara… but most times I can handle her. My high school is: (was) Take your pick… Archbishop Prendergast (Prendie) in Drexel Hill, PA, Philadelphia High School for Girls (Girls High) in Philly, and Lord Botetourt in Virginia When I’m nervous: I talk alot… and really fast… no I mean faster and more than I normally talk. News crews have been at Virginia Tech for almost a week now preparing for the year anniversary of the “Massacre at Virginia Tech…” It doesn’t seem like it’s been a year since the first reports of gun fire hit the news around here. Across the country, people were tuning in to see what was going on. But for us, right here in Hokie Territory it was so much worse. This was happening in our back yard. This was affecting people we knew, either first hand or though a degree of separation. It was hard. It was sad. Here is a what I posted last year on a message board that I belong to… Unless you’re in a bubble, you’ve probably heard about the “Massacre at Virginia Tech”…. (I know the UK has because some of the info I was getting y

How to put on a funeral…in pictures!
2008-04-18 08:43:58
A short (no seriously, I promise) background on the pictures in this post… Rhoda killed a rabbit yesterday. The kids decided to dispose of the rabbit for me, because they love me, and really, it’s just a little bit bigger than a mouse. These pictures capture the events that took place on the afternoon of April 17, 2008. So, Sam… think it’s going to fit in that shoe box? I got it in the bag, Matt… but it needs to go in the Amazon box. Rhoda! Get away, you’ve already done enough damage. Come on, Matt… we need to find the perfect place to bury Buddy. Sam, be respectful. Don’t be so loud. Funerals aren’t loud… unless people are crying loud. Let’s find the perfect spot, Matt. Then we can bury all dead mice, too. We

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…
2008-04-18 06:57:26
I should be grateful that I get anything at all for Mother’s Day. Really, I should be. While the kids are old enough to start making me gifts at church or school, they are not old enough to go out and purchase a card. The biggest downfall of being single is that there is no one to take them out and purchase a gift for me on their behalf. It’s just the way that it is. And for the most part, I’m okay with that. Please don’t get me wrong I love the ashtrays paperweights crafts in which they bring home wrapped in paper bags professing their love for me, regardless is everyone in the class professed their love for their mother in the same way. I really do. Although, secretly, I love the fact that the “perfect” moms get the same unidentifiable objects as

I’m a blockhead, are you?
2008-04-17 12:49:26
Didn’t someone used to call Charlie Brown a blockhead, or am I thinking of some other random cartoon character? Oh, it doesn’t matter. I’m talking about a different kind of blockhead… and my new favorite quote… “It’s an NKOTB universe. All you slobs just live in it.” You can read the where it came from here in this satirical post about the New Kids… and laugh.  Because it’s funny… even to me… a HUGE fan! Until next time…

Can you justify this?
2008-04-17 10:29:14
Let’s just say that I’ve gained a little more weight than I’ve wanted to since I quit smoking, broke up with the ex, started working at home, <insert every other excuse in the book here>. So I purchased a few workout DVDs because they all look like fun on the box! And with all the tax talk that happened in the last few weeks about what I can/cannot claim, I’m just wondering… anyway I can claim these as business expenses?????? Until next time…

Poetry anyone?
2008-04-17 07:41:51
I took AP English in high school.  I assumed that because I liked to read and write, that it might be the thing for me and I could get college credit.  And a B would really equal an A when it came to the whole GPA thing… But then the Summer Reading List was handed out. Catch 22? The invisible Man?  Ew.  None of these books appealed to me. My mother drove me straight to Given’s to purchase the 9 books on the list.  I pretended to read them, but I didn’t.  I got the Cliff Notes and muddled my way through the reports that I was required to write.  I guess I did well. The class wasn’t what I expected it to be.  And I’m not sure if this was the class that I was first introduced to “The Jilting of Granny Witherall” (my mother could tell you) but

Thinking about Alda Noftsinger…
2008-04-16 22:20:39
I’ll be honest — I don’t know who Alda Noftsinger is, but she’s on my mind and on my heart tonight. We took the youth group on a Destination Unknown tonight. We went to a cemetary and while that seems so morbid, the lesson that went with it was amazing. But more on that lesson a little later. When we arrived, we instructed the teens to pair up and meander through the grounds. The goal was just to observe; to see what we could see and to reflect on some of the observations that we made. As we were walking, I noticed one tombstone in which a husband had passed on in 1961 yet there was no date under the wife’s name. We assumed that she was still living and celebrated her 103rd birthday on March 3rd this year. Could you imagine being without your husband for t

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket….
2008-04-19 09:29:47
It was suggested yesterday that I may have started a winning streak… and that perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket. Wanna know why? Because the week that started out kinda crappy and hectic turned around when I was notified that not only had I won this but that I had won this, too! That’s two in one week which means soon, the mail man lady will be bringing me my new doodle book and luggage charms soon! Woo hoo!  Do you know how exciting it will be to have a new notebook?  Almost as exciting as being able to identify my suitcase on the carousel amidst everyone else’s black Samsonite!  (That is… if my luggage arrives with me.) It’s the little things, ya know? Until next time…

Pick of the week… Chic Critique
2008-04-20 07:00:36
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not the most girly in the world.  Up until a few weeks ago, I was still wearing my make up (and by make up, I mean brown eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss) the same way I was when I was 18. Beauty stuff intimidates me. There I said it. Fashion does too, but that’s a post for another time. And I once had a boyfriend beg me to be a little more girly… bought me all kinds of smelly stuff and would suggest things, but I just didn’t “get it”. I’ve had friends drag me to Sephora (when I lived near one) and try on all kinds of goop for my face… and I just felt so weird. Over time, I’ve hated feeling like a “mom”.  There’s nothing wrong with being a mom, but let’s face it… I’m no

My mom (and her dog) need your help!
2008-04-22 07:05:42
My parents got a new dog. I heard that they were going to get a “real” dog (and by real, I mean big) but Dad said they chickened out. They got a beagle mix. She’s cute. She came from a not so great home, and my parents and the traveling zoo (what we call them when they travel with two children, two cats, my grandma, and a dog) will take good care of her, I know they will. But she needs a name. She came with the name Snoopy. And that’s fine, but it doesn’t work. For one, how many beagles are named Snoopy? Secondly, she doesn’t look like a Snoopy. AND? She’s a girl! Snoopy is a boy’s name. So we came up with Gracie, Chloe or Pheobe as potential names. What do you think? Which of those fit her? OR… do you have a better suggestion?

Who Knew Mud Could Be So Fun?
2008-04-22 06:54:30
Last night it was raining.  But what else is new?  It’s been raining for what seems like forever. It was also our last softball practice before our first game and while I know that I couldn’t teach those girls everything they needed to know in an hour, I knew we had to try. So we had practice.  In the rain. I was proud of them.  It was muddy.  It was chilly.  But we did it.  And they did well, few of them complaining at all. So when we were all done, I gathered them ’round the pitcher’s mound and I let them get me. And they got me good. The girls had a blast, the parents thought I was nuts, and you wanna know something? I’m thinking I have a guest review for Chic-Critique because who needs those fancy products?  When I washed my face off last night, m

Sugar and Spice…Giveaway Day 2!
2008-04-22 06:00:39
Here it is… Day 2 of the Bloggy Carnival and as promised, I’m back with something new to give away? Here’s a picture… I’m so totally kidding… I’m not giving up my daughter… (not today anyway, she’s under control at the moment… but I wonder how many people would actually say “sign me up!”) But… one thing that she loves to do is figure out how she would look with different hair, or make up, or something along those lines… so up for grabs today is DigiMakeover Straight from the Amazon.com site… Now girls with a passion for fashion can see who they can be with Digi Makeover. A cool touchpad console with a digital camera connects to the TV so girls can project their own image onto the screen for a

For a minute, I thought it was Christmas…
2008-04-21 16:03:10
I mentioned how I never win anything, and then I mentioned how I won, not one, but two things, and then today? Matthew got the mail and there was a package for me. The envelope was nothing special, except the return address label was 10x better than mine are, and I like mine. I knew that contained within would be my Doodlebook. But wanna know what was inside the ordinary envelope? Do you see that pretty paper? There were two sheets of tissue paper… that one and then a really pretty lavender piece. And a little tag… which was written so affectionately… H- Happy Doodle-book-ing! <3 K Like we had known each other for eons when in reality, I think I found her blog, or she found mine rather, just a month or so ago. But whatever… I ripped that paper off… and

A Sibling Anniversary
2008-04-23 09:09:16
Today marks the One Year Anniversary of when my children received a big brother and big sister. No I didn’t adopt.  What?  Are you crazy?  I can’t handle the two that I have now, let alone adopting another… (not that I have ANYTHING against adoption, let me make that perfectly clear… it’s just that I’m a single mom and well, right now?  I’ve got what I can handle.) Matthew’s match was a gift from God in more ways than one.  If you remember, they don’t pair boys around here unless their father’s are incarcerated, of which, Matthew’s father?  Is not. But there was a big brother who was looking to mentor someone just like my Matthew.  And honestly, I don’t feel like we deserve him sometimes. His big brother is olde

Another Day Another Giveaway, New Kids Style
2008-04-23 05:39:16
So, if you’re new here, you might not know about my not-so-secret-anymore obsession… I am a blockhead. And by blockhead, I mean, I’m a fan, still, of the New Kids on the Block. Do you know how hard it is to find recent NKOTB stuff? Darn near impossible. Their store isn’t open yet, and I guess with copyright laws, there aren’t a whole lot of things out there. And the things I found? RE.TAR.DED. But I did find this… What better way to get ready for a tour near you, or their first concert LIVE! on the Today Show on May 16th? Here are the songs that are included… 1 Step By Step 2 You Got It (The Right Stuff) 3 I’ll Be Loving You (Forever) 4 Cover Girl 5 Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind) 6 Please Don’t Go Girl - (7″ version) 7

The Grand Poobah…
2008-04-25 06:15:00
So, if you’re just now finding my blog amongst all the other crazed mom (and dad) bloggers who are losing sleep, depriving their children, ignoring their husbands, missing out on the first week of sweeps and the return of Grey’s Anatomy in an effort to enter every contest listed here, welcome. You have some catching up to do. Nestled among the rants and raves of the week are four other giveaway posts that I’m sure you’ll want to enter, because the more you enter, the better chances you have at winning, right? But today prize is the biggie (at least I think so)… it’s a high ticket item, but if you’re not in the market for it, then you probably don’t need it… (well if that wasn’t the most profound statement of the year, I don

Please don’t be embarrassed…
2008-04-24 17:53:50
I treated myself to getting my nails done tonight.  I’ve had a pretty emotionally draining week and thought that it would be a good pick me up. So between all the comments that I’ve received this week, and all the new people that I’ve met, and now the nails, I’ve got a little bounce in my step tonight.  So thank you to all who were involved. Now, while I was at the nail salon, I actually spoke up.  I normally keep quiet, because I ALWAYS get the person who speaks no English and so I find it better to just keep my mouth shut.  It’s hard to sit there forever and say nothing. But the owner, owns a house down the street and his tenants, who just moved in 3 months ago, is now moving out. And then?  I heard this sound.  I knew the sound instantly.  It was a c

Cat in the Closet, With My Daughter Spoons…
2008-04-24 15:19:10
It got quiet in the house. That means one of two things. (A) the kids went out to play — YAY OR (B) They are into something that they aren’t supposed to be — NOT Yay!! So I venture back to the bathroom and the door is closed. Thinking that she must be in there, I open the door and spy an empty potty. I come back out and search the rest of the house and cannot find Samara. I go back in the bathroom and find this… In case you’re wondering where that is, it’s my bathroom linen closet. But what I’m wondering is WHY IS THERE A CAT IN MY CLOSET? Is this her way of telling me she wants to keep the stray cat she found? Oy… that child…. Until next time…

oh and what should we give away today?
2008-04-24 08:11:20
I go crazy sometimes. Ok, alot of times. I’ve done this every day giveaways once before, but this time I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t think ahead. I’ve been winging it. Actually, no I haven’t. I knew after a few minutes of thought what I would give away every day except today. Monday was easy… who doesn’t love a gift certificate, especially when it’s to anywhere you want? Tuesday was pretty simple too. I tripped over that blasted Digimakeover, the one that was used once before being put back in the box two Christmases ago, for the gazillionth time. It was safe to say that it could go. I know many girls who love the digi makeover. My daughter is not one of them. Go figure. Wednesday was pretty easy, too. I have a thing for the New Kids o
