Three Emus

Click for 634kb imageWanting to add more wildlife to this blog had me scanning my computer with thousands of photos to browse.This image isn't clear because the emus were off in the distance but the three grouped together did catch my attention when viewing the photo. Cropping and playing around with the image has improved it although lacking some detail.From an artist perspective if I was drawing or painting these birds I would want as many images as possible to come up with a good composition that shows off the emus personality. For this reason I considered it worth while posting the image on SnapShots so that eventually a collection of emu images are available to artists who visit this blog.There is some information about these ground birds at this website. The snapshot that you do see in this post was taken at Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia at a time I was artist in residence. A Web Woven

Click for 696kb imageLooking through my kitchen window while preparing breakfast I notice the sunlight striking droplets of water enhancing the silk of this spider web.Dewy mornings so often can be a beautiful time of the day with light showing through transparent leaves and water droplets creating a truly magical wonderland.This poor specimen for a web has me wondering if the spider did indeed catch his meal to sustain him for the rest of the day. The broken web, could that be evidence of a struggle with a big fat juicy moth? Tess, the Working Dog

Click for 448kb imageThis photo was taken of Tess when she was sitting in her box near our back door under the veranda.Tess is a working Coolie kelpie cross dog on our family farm with more energy than two dogs put together. When she has her injections, the vet tells us that she has a very strong heart and I can say she has a powerful tail as well that whips you around the legs that one wonders if she is belting us up with happiness.It isn't always easy to get a photo of Tess as she is always withering with excitement, so the command "in your box" has her sitting quietly for a couple of minutes while I grabbed some photos. I particularly liked this snapshot because she wasn't looking directly at me but staring at something else that caught her attention. Once she was told she could leave her box all that could be seen was a blur. Gawler Ranges Trip, South Australia "part fifteen"

Click for 1.18MB imageTo finish this trip off I thought a panorama view of our last stop would be the way to go, which was Ranges View Rest Area, 62 kilometres NW of Port Augusta in South Australia . For those on dial-up please be aware this is a large file.I do hope this image gives you an idea of the expanse of the landscape because so often a single photo will not do this. I did not use any automatic panorama software when stitching three photos together for this image because I just could not get the desired results that I was after. Instead time was spent with layers using Photoshop to get the best results.I had mention in past posts of this trip that my brother and his wife also participated. In fact the original idea to make this trip was my brothers who also has a photo blog with photos of this same trip here. Click for 666kb imageIf you have been following this Gawler Ranges trip you will then realise that this is our second camp for the two nights that this little traveling party made.After a long day on the road, an area was spotted to make camp not all that far off the main Kingoonya to Glendambo road. By the time we had our tents up and a fire going to cook our meal the night air was quickly cooling down.Click for 497kb imageThe landscape is truly beautiful in this area as the sun goes down with warm light streaking across the flat plains.Click for 498kb imageThe next morning as the sky awakens I can hear birds going about their business and cheering with chatter and song; a celebration of a new day for all living things.Yes a new day where this traveling party must break camp and move on and head down the road towards home but first there is more to see before this journey is completed. South Australias floral emblem; the Sturt's Desert Pea

Click for 707kb imageGawler Ranges Trip, South Australia "part twelve"I have titled this post differently from my past Gawler Ranges Trip entry because I really did want to bring attention to this Sturt's Desert Pea flower, Swainsona formosa.The first image gives an indication of how these plants grow. At the time this photo was taken these specimens were very healthy in the early stages of flowering. I would have loved to had been there a week later as I can image a carpet of red would have covered this area. Click for 489kb imageIf only the walls could talk; what would they tell us?Traveling to Adelaide from Mannum this cottage could be seen not all that far from the main highway.Some people are spooked walking into old buildings but I am one of those that soaks up the past of the everyday life of these aged buildings. I love to hear stories from the older generation about the history of what happened. Usually there are deaths and births along with heartache and happiness as well as sheer hard work.Maybe all those things happened within the walls of this little cottage? Mannum & the Murray River

Click for 466kb imageMy post yesterday was about Whispering Wall and todays entry carries on from there because my brother drove us onto Mannum to pass some time that same day with more photos to share with you. The wind was bitterly cold with the sun intermittently shining through breaks in the cloud cover. I have stayed with family and friends at the caravan park in the past that can be seen here amongst the River Red Gums. It is a lovely spot with a lot of history to Mannum and the surrounding area.Click for 529kb imageWho are you looking at! There is plenty of bird life at Mannum with this Pelican not bothering to fly away. I was so near that I did wonder how close it would allow me to get. I didn't test this thought out though because I don't know if some Pelicans could be aggressive towards humans and their snapping cameras. It is known for a Pelican to pinch your food off your plate while eating your lunch on the river bank in Mannum. Oh and they don't mind helping themselves

Whispering Wall - South Australia

Click for 502kb imageMy brother and his wife often talked about Whispering Wall so while waiting for our Patrol to have a snorkel fitted on our recent trip to Adelaide we were given a tour of this fascinating dam not all that far away from Gawler in South Australia .Click for 491kb imageWhat is so fascinating about this dam? Well it is the actual acoustic of sound that bounces off the curved wall. It is rather spooky when I experienced this when my brother and his wife went to one end of the wall and my husband and I the other end. Let me tell you, never talk badly of the other person because they will hear you as if on a loud speaker. Malcolm and I could hear the other party walking to the whispering platform like footsteps in a horror movie. At one point when we started talking to each other in booming voices I did wonder if it was a joke looking around for a speaker to amplify all these sounds we could hear. None to be found and no wonder it is called Whispering Wall because that is

Click for 455kb imageI don't know what this area is called with the sand dunes but it was a pleasant surprise when my eyes set upon them.Click for 413kb imageThe light once in awhile did streak across the dunes in patches although fleetingly.Click for 534kb imageThis image will give you a bit more perspective of the area. As you can see my brothers patrol is laden with all our camping gear, food and water for our two nights on the road. When traveling 'out bush' it is an idiot that would not take extra food and water in case there are circumstances where we are unable to return to civilization in a time frame that we ourselves had planned. Survival in the bush means taking extra supplies or you may perish and this also means making sure family and friends know when to expect you home and if that time frame passes they then can alert the authorities, so that a search can be put into action.There will be more snapshots of this trip later in the week. Click for 478kb imageThere were numerous salt lakes on this camping trip. Some were small and others large. Several without water and fewer with water.Click for 371kb imageThis photo and the one below are the same lake. It was a lovely surprise to come across this water with us looking for a way to drive in off the main gravel road so that we could investigate the area closer at the same time take many photos. Spotting a track our little party was soon travelling deeper into the bush until we came to a clearing where evidence of a fire had been made in the past by campers that must have enjoyed this little oasis. Click for 432kb imageYou do need to click on these thumbnails to see some of the lovely colours in the shadows of the morning light.This first photo was taken as the cold air was hitting me after crawling out of my snug as a bug sleeping bag with a heavy dew covered over our tents. The sun wasn't even out of bed itself but it had the promise of wonderful light to come. Click for 611kb imageIn the creek near the Siam Station homestead there are hops flowering. These are not native to Australia and only flower after good rains, which the area did have. As much as these hops are not native to my country they can put on a magical show in the Flinders Ranges although this does not happen very often due to lack of rain.Click for 623kb imageOf the two nights on this trip that my brother and his wife and Malcolm and I bush camped, this was our first night. Everybody instinctively found a job to do and it wasn't long before we had our tents up, chairs out and a fire going to cook our evening meal. Click for 503kb imageThis image of the Siam Station homestead has been taken from a rise in the landscape that was always referred to as the 'Little Hill'. After having children of my own I asked my mum did she ever worry about my siblings and myself traipsing for miles away from the homestead. In a matter of fact voice her reply was "No, you always came home!". It was in the later years that I also found out that mum used to watch us kids up in the hills through the scope of a gun. Just a little about the homestead:When my dad took on the job of overseer, we lived in the house on the far right.Second building from right is the mens quarters.Third building from right used to be the 'Siam Rural School'. The school was housed in the mens quarters until this building was ready but prior to all of this my mum taught correspondence lessons to me.Moving across to the left is a very large iron shed. This shed wasn't part of the station at the time I lived on Siam Station.Top of that v

Click for 539kb imageStill traveling on Siam Station, it was time for a morning cuppa and when out bush the best way to do this is start a fire and put the stainless steel kettle on, which my brother had packed for this trip. As you can see from the blackened kettle it has been used on a number of occasions in the past. We didn't have billy tea this trip as we all were wanting coffee. If you ever get the chance to try billy tea, do so because it is a very nice way to drink tea. I do cringe though after the tea leaves have been dropped in the boiling water and then the billy swung around at the end of an arm like a windmill gone crazy so that the solid matter drops to the bottom of the container. Click for 363kb imageYesterdays post was about the inside of this shearing shed and now it is time to show you what the building and surrounding area is like.Click for 400kb imageIf you are wondering what the tall pole is used for at the right of the shearing shed, its purpose is to hoist bales of wool onto the back of trucks.Click for 396kb imageAccommodation and a cook is provided for the shearing and Rouseabout team. The 'smoko' is delivered to the shearing shed by the cooks 'helper' morning and afternoon. The team would return to the building on the right of this image for three meals per day. The building to the far left is the sleeping quarters for the workers. behind the kitchen and dining room (building on the right) there is an amenities block. The small shed to the front is the engine room for the power supply for all the buildings.Some of you may have heard of Henry Lawson. Click for 468kb imageVisiting the Siam Station shearing shed brought some wonderful memories of my childhood back. I was disappointed though to find that the old shearing plant had been dismantled for a new one before I managed to get a snapshot of what it used to look like. The shearing boards were very silent but gee I do remember the hustle and bustle of people working and the sheep moving around in their yards as well as the diesel engine running the shearers plant along with many other sounds that happen during shearing, some of which consisted of swear words when things did not go right. Oh what memories!!! Click for 477kb imageThis catchment of water on Siam Station is known as Government Dam. During the summer it wasn't uncommon for us kids to swim in this dam with a blown up tyre tube to keep afloat and yes there was adult supervision around at the time. I still remember the slime on the edge of the dam squishing through my toes. I now cringe at the thought of that goo wondering what was in it. Click for 383kb imageThis little dam is what is called the 'Catch Hole' that feeds the water from the landscape into the main Government Dam. Click for a 475kb imageOn Saturday my brother and his wife as well as Malcolm and myself headed off for a trip down memory lane in the Gawler Ranges where we spent quite a bit of our childhood growing up. Other members of the family also had worked in the Gawler Rangers in the past over many years.As you can see from these images the day was rather damp with rain often obscuring the far distances. Shingleback or "Stumpy-tailed Lizard"

Click for 719kb imageThese Shingleback lizards are widespread throughout the Flinders Ranges. This image was taken in the Central Flinders at 2.38pm September 2006.These skinks are common here on the family farm as well and love to raid my garden for flowers, the Gazania one of their favourites. Emu with Seven Chicks

Click for 675kb imageTrue, there are seven chicks in this image! Can you find the seventh little guy? Emus are birds I have a great deal of respect for, when trying to photograph them. This group were up against a wire fence which slowed them down enough to get a photo but also aware that dad would have felt trapped if I tried to get closer and no way was I going to have him taking after me when he felt the need to protect his little family.I am disappointed with the quality of the photo, as I am with the remainder that I have on file. I hope to remedy this in September when I will be sharing the company of emus. Burra Creek

Click for 808kb imageThis photo was taken at the Burra Creek and as you can see there is a massive Eucalyptus Gum Tree reaching for the sky. This tree is one of many in the area and worth visiting for a picnic with family and friends.For those that are more adventurous and do live further away from Burra Creek and can't manage a day trip, it is a great camping area as well with two long drop toilets provided. There are no shower facilities. Adding money to the donation box helps keep the camping area in the great condition that it is in.Take a closer look at this image and you will see my brother's caravan tucked away in the shady area. Tomorrow my husband and I along with my brother and his wife plus another couple who are dear friends to us all are leaving for a holiday traveling North with our caravans, which will last a little over three weeks. Hot off the Press, Thunderstorm

Thanks goodness I do have backup batteries for my PC for occasions like this to give me time to shut the computer down.Anyway this photo I have just taken West of my home. My husband has just came inside saying there has been large pieces of hail falling on top of his workshop shed. He is a busy man making up some frames for me for recent sales so hope he didn't slip off the mat with the cutter. Gosh I can now hear hail on the roof of the house... gee they are making a lot of noise. Gee it sounds like someone is throwing stones on our roof. Gee once more, is is now very scary!!!I will be back with an update with this. I took a quick look and some of the hail is approximately one inch across and coming right in under the veranda hitting the wall. I don't hold any hope for our crops. Our Flood

Click for 256kb imageExcuse the mess but we were having a flood .I am not going to bombard SnapShots with flood photos but thought I would share these two with you. The filthy water under my veranda ended up one centimetre below my door threshold before it started to recede away so that was a lucky escape. My sons home did have two rooms with water damage that came through the roof with repairs having to be made to wiring and removal of floor covering. This photo was taken looking towards my sons home. There is still a lot of cleaning up to do although the urgent items have been done.Click for 603kb imageThis snapshot is of a creek that run past the farmyard. Gorgeous little Dog - Papillon

Click for 496kb imageFor two weeks I have had the pleasure of looking after this little dog, which is a Papillon breed. Her name is Ella and she is a little over twelve months old and belongs to my son and his new wife, who arrived home yesterday from their honeymoon.Ella has a wonderful personality and a quick learner when it comes to tricks. Some tricks that she will do by command are sneeze, roll over, sit, and high five. She has very good manners. Simple things like not taking her food until she is told she can and also sits and waits to be told she can pass through an exterior door to come indoors. Gives you time to wipe any muddy paws if need be. Click for 645kb imageThis closeup will give you a good look of her sweet face.
