I was sick yesterday, had to cancel my Thursday lessons so that I could go home, hit the Nyquil and try to sleep it off. Well, I didn't sleep much, but I did watch a movie called "The Fastest Guitar Alive "."Wow!!!", I thought. Even though I'm feeling terrible, I can watch a movie about the fastest guitar alive. Then it hit me, Roy Orbison was the lead actor? That guy ain't fast.Well, the story goes like this....Roy and his co-actor were spies for the South during the Civil War. They had an assignment to steal gold from the San Francisco Mint in order to finance the South's war effort. Since they were spies, Roy had a rifle built i

I came across an interesting blog a couple of weeks ago called Hunting The Muse: A Creative Writing Blog.I read several of the articles, one of which, Writing about dreams, caught my attention. Brady, the blog author, was talking about capturing story ideas from our dreams. What better place, right? I mean, we all have superfunkacalifragisexy dreams from time to time that lead to interesting story ideas.Well, I commented that musicians could do the same. If you're dreaming of playing or hearing wonderful music, you could keep a voice recorder by your bed and try to hum the melody or bass line to the music. Then, when you wake up, try to play what you recorded. But enough about how cool his blog is...Here's the scoop ...I've

Subscribe to my feed! It’s free, easy to do and makes me happy! So here's the deal.....I recently wrote a piece about how to get booked for your first show.  In that piece, I told everyone to go and find ALL the open mic nights around, sign up and start playing.  After you play, meet the owners, talk a little shop, get booked.  It's that easy.  This is great advice (trust me, I know what I'm talkin' about), but then I thought to myself.... "Self, couldn't you help just a little bit more??"Well, sure I can!!  So here's the skinny:  We're starting an regular open mic night program at Little Rock Jams.During the first class, we'll decide on a song list for the open mic night. In the subsequent classes, I'll help you learn the songs, teach y

That's not a slam on you, but just a fact of life. Mike is in the jazz-fusion-rock vein of players and as such, doesn't get any play on radio outside of your local NPR stations during their Jazz shows. (Thanks, Clear Channel !!!) (sarcasm folks)...He's put out several "must have" albums as a solo artist, but he's also played and recorded with monsters like Miles Davis, Jaco, Scofield, Michael Brecker and John Pattituci to name just a few.So, to hip you to some fine playing, and to inspire you to go practice, we're doing a Guitar Face and a video of Mr. Stern. Words Of Wisdom From Kenny Werner

Subscribe to my feed! It’s free, easy to do and makes me happy!Hey guys. I just wanted to share a little piece of an article by Kenny Werner about the difference between practicing and playing. In practicing, when one should be improving their overall game, looking for imperfections and mastering them, or looking for those chords, lines or rhythms that elude one - one suddenly abandons those targeted searches and simply "plays." there is nothing wrong with playing, of course, but once one has moved from practicing to playing, one is again reinforcing the old, not establishing the new.  Playing while practicing is not practicing in the sense that it is not achieving any upgrade in the information that currently runs through you. And then when one plays one expects those things that w

And to help him along the way, he is video taping and posting them to his blog so that readers can keep up with his progress and comment. This is a very innovative way for pushing yourself to get better . Take yourself out of the privacy and security of your practice room and put your playing on the web for all to see and hear, warts and all (or in the case of Joe, some tasty SRV licks).I've talked about recording yourself before, and what it can do to improve your playing.
