How Much Do Losses Hurt? 2008-04-11 12:57:00 Listed below are the average regular season losses (ties equal 0.5 losses) for each place in the top 16 under the Power Points System for the past 30 seasons. The information that follows is each place's probable path to the national title under my proposed playoff format (see My College Football Utopia ). The format includes automatic bids for each conference. Therefore, teams that place near the bottom of the top 16 are likely to be bumped by a lower ranked automatic qualifier. Nevertheless, the purpose of this information to is demonstrate the likely cost of each loss in order to counter playoff opponents that argue the regular season will become meaningless due to a greater margin of error for playoff contenders.1-0.5 H16 H8 H4 N22-0.5 H15 H7 H3 N13-1.1 H14 H6 A2 N14-1.2 H13 H5 A1 N25- Read more:Losses

Arizona versus Arizona State 2008-03-19 02:19:00 Since much has been made of Arizona
making the NCAA tournament while Arizona State
did not despite the latter sweeping two head-to-head games and finishing with better conference and overall records, I wanted to see how these teams compared under the Power Points System. Not surprisingly, the results indicate that this controversy is a phony one and the result of superficial thinking on the part of Arizona State
advocates. Against Division I competition, Arizona won 18 games versus
opponents that won 303 games and lost 14 games versus opponents that lost 125 games. Arizona State won 19 games versus opponents that won 261 games and lost 12 games versus opponents that lost 126 games.OVERALLArizona (18-14) (303 - 125 = 178 Power Points)Arizona State (19-12) (261 - 126 = 135 Power Points)Exclu

NCAA Tournament 2008-03-16 19:27:00 If and when all teams play an equal number of games, the Power Points System will produce the same results as simply adding a team's winning percentage and its opponents' winning percentage (including games against). That said, I have added each college basketball team's winning percentage and its opponents' winning percentage (excluding games against) based on information posted at warrennolan.com in order to approximate the field and seedings for the NCAA tournament if the Power Points System were used rather than a selection committee. The Power Points System and the selection committee disagreed on six teams. The Power Points System favored VCU, Illinois State, Stephen F. Austin, Dayton, New Mexico, and IUPUI. No Competition Allowed Association 2008-02-01 21:37:00 Email: scoreboardblog@yahoo.comSince 1978, 181 teams have equaled or surpassed the Power Points System's least valuable resume among top two finishers (1984 Brigham Young) through regular season competition. Only 45 schools account for those 181 teams. Ten schools account for 103. Another 14 schools account for 57 and another 21 schools account for the remaining 21 teams. This means that only 45 schools out of 152 that have played at least one season in the Football Bowl Subdivision have had at least one team that would have made a two-team playoff under the Points Points System in any one of the last 30 seasons and 21 of those had only one team and 14 of those would have only made it in 1984 when the top two bar was set so low. As such, it would appear that the most "meaningful" regular s

Highest Ranked One-Loss Teams 2008-01-23 12:36:00 Email: scoreboardblog@yahoo.comSince 1978, the Power Points System and AP Poll have agreed on the highest ranked one-loss team at the end of the regular season 17 times in 30 seasons. The 13 disagreements are listed below with the team favored by the Power Points System listed first. In each instance, the AP Poll favored the team that lost earlier in the season whereas the Power Points System favored teams that averaged 9.7 more power points. Under ideal circumstances, that amounts to playing opponents that are 9.7 games better combined. The Hard Road to Just Hot 2008-01-14 12:30:00 Email: scoreboardblog@yahoo.comPlayoff opponents often argue that a playoff will reward the hottest team rather than the season's strongest team. Besides the fact that most teams qualifying for a 16-team playoff will be 10-2 or better and finish 14-2 or better if they win, the winner of any such playoff is likely to accomplish more in four weeks than most mythical national champions accomplish in an entire season. To illustrate my point, listed below are this year's top 16 teams in the power points standings followed by their path (assuming no upsets but their own) to the national title under the playoff format proposed in My College Football Utopia. The format actually includes auto bids for all conferences. Therefore, readers can substitute the four conference champions not included in t

The power points system does not attempt to identify the best team or teams. The first place team is simply the winner of first place according to the prescribed rules. Whether or not the first place team is also the best team is unknowable and irrelevant. Furthermore, the power points system is not predictive.
