David Vandervelde Live @ Alchemize & WOXY Lounge 2007-02-24 19:36:52 Its an interesting thing watching potential right before your eyes. In some ways its like gazing into a crystal ball with a glimpse of what is to come and in other ways its a in your face commentary on lack of experience. David
Vandervelde has tons of potential, but understandably, is still working through the kinks. And that may be one way of summing up his trip through Cincinnati yesterday.
When David and his band announced at the WOXY Lounge Act yesterday that this was really was a “really great way to get warmed up”, I wasnt surprised. Lots of bands get into the groove in the studio before that nights show. But, he really meant it. You see, this was to be the 2nd time David and his bandmates had played together. Ever. And while this certainly wasnt a groundbreaking first show, I certainly felt fortunate enough to catch him this early on.

Illinois - Screendoor 2007-02-22 16:50:45 Ive got a new track from a new band to share today that I have on repeat right now. The band is “Illinois
” and are one of the newest signings to Ace Fu Records. The track starts catchy enough with the line…..”helllllo, all you lovely ladies” and serves as a proper introduction to a band that scratches the indie pop itch I get quite often.
The bands debut EP, “What The Hell Do I Know?” is out March 6 from Ace Fu. Check out their MySpace page for tour dates that include a stop at SXSW in Austin next month.

Annuals @ Southgate House 2007-02-21 17:30:01 North Carolina’s Annuals were in town last night for their Cincinnati area debut at The SouthgateHouse
in Newport, KY. I walked in just in time to hear them begin their set with Complete or Completeing, one of the gems from their debut album, Be He Me . The Southgate House
was rather subdued on a Tuesday night but I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout considering the night and the fact that Annuals have never played here before.
I was also pleasantly surprised at the bands energy, especially from the lead singer Adam Baker, who cluthces the microphone like a famished traveller grasping his last drink of water. The crowd didnt really reciprocate the energy, and seemed to be cautiously observing the band for the majority of the set. But by the time the band launched into arguably the best track on the album, Brother, a decent amount of people had left their seats or standing positions in the back to get a closer look and listen. As with most young bands only touring a
Buildings Breeding 2007-02-21 15:22:16 I ran across these guys a few weeks back via an email. I came into the station that very day and noticed that it was also sitting on the shelf begging for a bit of airplay. BuildingsBreeding
’s claim to fame up to this point is that they really had no intention of being a band, much less a good one. Guitarist Chris Larsen uploaded some tunes to MySpace for his girlfriend that he had written which got things going.
The result was a completely accidental domino effect that resulted in a four piece band, (which includes his girlfriend), an indie record deal with Mushpot Records, and quite a few fans in the process. Builidings Breeding create the shimmery indie pop that draws the kids in, and with the lyrical merit to go along with it. My personal favorite tune is Emmawood, which has Chris’s mate Melanie Glover taking an impressive vocal lead. You can sample it and another track below.

Mason Proper - Album news and tour dates 2007-02-16 16:25:26 Great news today concerning indie rock band MasonProper
. The Michigan boys released their debut album, “There Is A Moth In Your Chest” last year on their own indie label called Mang Chung Records and began to tour. The fruits of the tour were great, and included a Lounge Act performance on WOXY, some great live sets, and caught the ear of Dovecote Records at a NYC gig.
Dovecote signed the band and sent them home to re-mix and slightly re-work their album with John O’Mahoney (Metric, Matt Pond PA.) The results are really fantastic. The release will be the first for Dovecote since the last Aberdeen City disc and the release has a special Cincinnati tie to it. The album will see an official release on March 13th and has an exclusive pre-sale at local indie record store Shake It Records. The band has drawn comparisions to The Flaming Lips and even Death Cab for Cutie. The guys are also excited to announce a string of tour dates

Sister Vanilla - Ex Jesus and Mary Chain members branch out 2007-02-28 15:13:12 As if the news that the Jesus
and Mary Chain
would be highlighting one of the days at the Coachella Festival this summer wasnt enough, now die-hard fans of the band have a spin off to keep track of. Sister Vanilla
is a band made up of ex-Jesus And Mary Chain
legends Jim Reid, William Reid, and Ben Lurie. Fans of the original outfit will not be dissapointed with this effort, as Jim and William’s sister Linda, who was also leading the charge on the last Jesus and Mary Chain, “Munki”, when she crooned the song, “Mo Tucker”.
Here are two samples from the upcoming album from Sister Vanilla, “Little Pop Rock”, which is due out April 3rd on Chemikal Underground Records.

Air - Pocket Symphony 2007-03-05 14:50:13 The French duo Air is back with their 6th full length album, but the first since 2004’s Talkie Walkie. As always, the bands sound is incredibly layered with electronica and instrumental melodies. If you are a fan of the band, it will please you to know that this album is something that easily fits in well with the rest of the bands catalouge. the song, Once Upon A Time especially is reminiscent of something that could have partnered well with Cherry Blossom Girl from Talkie Walkie.
Former Pulp frontman and now solo artist Jarvis Cocker also appears on One Hell Of A Party, although its certainly not a tune to spin during your party, as it seems to be examining the come down the morning after an all nighter. Neil Hannon (of The Divine Comedy) also lends vocals on another somewhat depressing song, “Somewhere Between Waking and Sleeping”. Overall, the album can drag at times, but this shouldn’t be new territory for Air fans. PocketSymphony

Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day (demo) 2007-03-06 20:27:15 Happy Belated Casimir Pulaski Day! For those unaware, yesterday was a city wide holiday in Chicago. Kids even get off of school on the first Monday in March to celebrate the great Polish American War General Casimir Pulaski. Here is a quote from the Asthmatic Kitty website.
“Born into a wealthy family in Poland in 1747, Casimir Pulaski, as a young man, fought for freedom from Russia in his homeland until 1771, when he was exiled to France. In Paris he met American envoy Benjamin Franklin, who influenced him to help Americans fight for their independence. Washington was so impressed with Pulaski’s abilities during the Battle of Brandywine Creek that he recommended the Continental Congress appoint Pulaski as general of the American cavalry. In 1778, Pulaski organized an independent corps of cavalry and light infantry known as the Pulaski Legion. It is reported that he spent $50,000 of his own money to help train and equip his troops.”

Son Volt - The Search 2007-03-06 16:51:27 The parallel between Wilco and Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar and Son Volt has been hard to ignore. When Uncle Tupelo broke up, and the songwriters went their separate ways, it was anyones guess as to whom would be the bigger success with their new bands. It started off easily enough, Wilco released a rather rushed and not incredibly well accepted debut in A.M. While Son Volt on the other hand, dropped a classic on the masses with Trace.
Since that time though, Wilco has been catapulted into super indie stardom, while Farrar has disbanded Son Volt, gone solo, and then brought the band back together 10 years after their first album for Okemah And The Melody Of Riot . And now both bands prep another album, with different band members, but the same heads in Tweedy and Farrar. We have already been talking lots of Wilco here, but the Son Volt album, in true Farrar fashion, has been more of a sleeper although it hits stores today.
The new album, Search
, gave me a bit of a shock upon listen

The Postmarks - The Remixes + SXSW shows 2007-03-07 14:54:52 Sometimes, a new band comes along and just completely hooks me. Its been that way with the debut disc from The Postmarks
. Lead singer Tim Yehezkely has a seriously beautiful voice and the arrangements and solid instrumentation behind her is excellent as well. Two of my favorite tunes from the record were Goodbye, and You Drift Away, so naturally, I was pleased when the band released a remixes EP not long after featuring those two tunes. Sure, this disc has been out for months now, but It may not have been on your radar.
Dig in to some of The Postmarks,….now.

Apostle of Hustle - National Anthem of Nowhere 2007-03-08 19:17:55 When it comes to spin-off bands, Broken Social Scene have more of them than All In The Family had spin-off TV shows (we count 9 here). But, in the grand scheme of things, Apostle of Hustle
is probably one of the first in a long line. Originally formed back in 2001 when, after recording the first BSS album, Andrew Whiteman spent two-months with his godmother’s family in Cuba. When he returned, he had learned to play the tres, a Cuban guitar and corralled BSS bandmates , Julian Brown and Dean Stone to record the first Apostle of Hustle album with him, the Cuban influenced, Folkloric Feel.
Fast forward to current day, as Apostle’s new album, “National
Anthem of Nowhere
” is being prepped. The new disc is not much like the debut however, and gives off way more of a BSS feel than anything Latin (spare the Federico Garcia Lorca) poem “¡Rafaga!”). The album instead leans into 90s experimental rock and some of the same sounds that made Broken Social
