TV On The Radio - Live @ Newport Music Hall
2007-03-09 15:48:08
TV On The Radio were in Columbus, OH this week for a live set. Our live reviewer Dave was there, taking the show in. Apparently, so were some rather inconsiderate fans, but enough about that, on to Dave’s review… I’m going to jump right into this, because that’s what TV on the Radio did at their sold out show at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night. I have a feeling Dave Sitek, producer, guitarist, and brains for the Brooklyn quintet, was in the mood to rock right from the start of the show. Opening with “I Was A Lover”, the lead track off their fabulous 2006 release Return To Cookie Mountain, the band sprang right in, literally, as lead singer Tunde Adebimpe and lead guitarist Kyp Malone leapt all over the stage, full of vibrant energy. The next four songs (“Wrong Way”, “Dreams”, “Province”, and “Wolf Like Me”) produced that same kind of feeling of unbridled energy and enthusiasm, both from the band and the crow

Interview - Bryce Dessner of The National talks “Music Now”
2007-03-12 16:32:44
I had the chance to speak with Bryce Dessner of The National recently about the Music Now festival, which will be here in Cincinnati next month. I attended the first Music Now Festival last year, which took place at the Cincinnati Arts Center downtown and it was a big success. Bryce is the creative source behind the process and curator of the festival, so I sought him out to get his thoughts. ENS - What was the inspiration behind starting Music Now and bringing it to Cincinnati? Bryce Dessner - “At first, I really wanted an excuse to come home more often. Even though I haven’t lived in Cincinnati for more than 10 years now, we all (The National) still have family back in Cincinnati.” But I also wanted Cincinnati to have something like Music Now. The first year I wanted something for the downtown area because I wanted a really compelling arts event for downtown Cincinnati. It was also important for me to add a visual element to the event, which is why we had the

Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times MP3 + Tour Dates
2007-03-13 17:44:46
Kings Of Leon have a new album, Because of The Times on the horizon and if the first single, “On Call” is any indication, it could be their best yet. (download below) The band, who have already hit it big overseas and have had every show they have performed in sell out over there, have yet to achieve the same US success. Here is a quote about that from a recent Harp Magazine interview….. “Every concert we’ve ever played in the U.K. has sold out,” says bassist Jared Followill. “It’s pretty crazy when we’re there. We have to stay in our hotel all day because we really can’t leave. If less than 200 kids come over the barricade at the show, it’s a slow night.” And in response to the US not embracing the band with the same intensity. “At first, it bothered us a little bit just because you go from not being able to go anywhere without a security guard to coming here and the only person that recongnizes you in

Sara Culler - New EP + Madonna Cover
2007-03-13 16:34:53
It’s always nice to hear a new, fresh female voice hit the scene. It seems like of late, there have been some really incredible ones that I have been enjoying. From Julie Dorian to Tracey Thorn and of course Feist. But one that certainly belongs in that class but that you may not be aware of is Sara Culler. Sara is from Sweden and has an intoxicating voice that sounds as if she has been recording for longer than her young age suggests. You may know Sara from her time with the band David and The Citizens but she is certainly forging her own path with the recent songs that have been circulating around the web. Sara has just released a brand new EP as well titled, “Miss Takes, Light The Night” which you can purchase by following this link. WOXY has taken a liking to Sara and her music, and she will be a guest in their Austin Recording Studio tomorrow at Noon. This is actually a homecoming of sorts for Culler, who did a good deal of her growing up in Dallas. This

Dr. Dog - We All Belong + Tour Dates
2007-03-13 14:57:33
Dr. Dog’s latest full length, We All Belong hit store shelves a couple weeks back and as someone who calls myself a fan of the band, I’ve been letting the new one sink in a bit. The thing that usually happens in a Dr. Dog review is that a wild number of comparisons are thrown out, usually to the detriment of the band. This is unfortunate since every single band in existence has had their influences affect their music. And outside of those bands that seem to only be cloning themselves in their favorite bands likeness, this is not a trait that should be looked down upon. Dr. Dog, out of Philadelphia, are no exception in that their influences are well represented on their records. The new one, We All Belong, isn’t one that stands out in their catalog but has some real standout songs within it at the same time. “The Girl” has a heavy guitar riff that drives it straight into your subconcious, which is something I really wish this band would do more of. Im

Internet Radio Royalties and WOXY
2007-03-14 16:42:09
Lots of chatter around the web in the past couple of weeks regarding the new internet radio royalty rate hike. The Wall Street Journal profiled our very own WOXY with an article today, I’ll link to the article here and provide some interesting quotes as well. “The annual cost of running WOXY could more than double to around $2 million, far exceeding the station’s $500,000 to $1 million in annual revenue. The board’s decision could still be appealed or rescinded by Congress, but WOXY manager Bryan Jay Miller says, “I don’t see the situation getting any better.” Interesting to see it in black and white, the numbers are not to be taken lightly…. “Mr. Nguyen doesn’t yet have a solution for WOXY, which currently has about 100,000 unique listeners monthly. He says he may restrict the ability to create songlists to users who are actually buying and selling CDs on Lala. He is also considering altering his CD-selling model so that li

The Fratellis - Costello Music
2007-03-14 16:17:10
If you were to piece together the ingredients for the perfect British rock record, throw them all into a bowl, stir repeatedly, and add an extra dose of caffeine for good measure, you may end up with the new album from The Fratellis , Costello Music . The takes everything that is good about hyped up Scottish rock, in the same vein as Maximo Park or Arab Strap and melds it together with some good old Belle and Sebastian fun to make this record. There hasn’t been an album in a long time that I can easily describe with the term “fun”, but this one nails it. From the bouncy IPod commercial song “Flathead” to the more low key guitar strumming ballad that is “Whistle For The Choir” this has been one of my personal favorite albums of the year for awhile now. However, the disc just got a US release yesterday, so as it spreads to the masses, let me go on a bit more about the benefits. Our friends across the pond have been enjoying The Fratellis for qui

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver + Tour Dates
2007-03-15 15:40:43
The second full length album from Sound system.htm">LCD Soundsystem , “Sound Of Silver ”, hits shelves next week on March 20th and from all indications, this one is already being touted as better than the debut disc from the band. I’ve been spinning the new one for awhile now, and I would agree that it’s an obvious step up for James Murphy and the crew. And now, they have also just released a slew of spring tour dates. Here is a tune from the album to get you started as well as the tour dates. Land Of Talk - Applause Cheer Boo Hiss
2007-03-16 15:57:27
Montreal’s Land of Talk were one of many bands to play a session this week for WOXY down in Austin as a part of the SXSW festivities. I’ve been listening to most of the sessions and to this point, this one may have been my favorite. The band was energetic, fun and played an inspired set. The full mp3 download of the session will be up next week, but I have a couple songs today to tide you over in the meantime. These two songs are from the bands EP, “Applause Cheer Boo Hiss” is full of fuzzy guitars and knock out vocals in the same vein as PJ Harvey or Cat Power. This EP has been out for almost a year now outside the US it finally gets a US street date next week, on March 20th. But you should also be on the lookout for something new from the band very soon, as they played some new songs in the WOXY session this week that sounded really great. Cincinnati Concert Reminder - Ratatat Tonight @ Southgate
2007-03-19 13:26:37
So, the SXSW week is over, and I know I have way more energy now than those that attended the festival and had an amazing time. I hope everyone enjoyed audio coverage from Mike, I thought it was fun. I’m starting off this Monday morning with a reminder that Ratatat is at the Southgate House tonight, it’s really a show you should make a point to be at. The most recent album from them, Classics, is an absolute gem. So, be sure to head down to Newport tonight if you are in the area and take in what should be a great show. It’s a 10$ show if you buy in advance on the SG website, and it’s 12$ at the door. The show should go off around 10pm. Voxtrot - Blood Red Blood
2007-03-20 17:24:52
The first full length from the Austin boys better known as Voxtrot is due out May 22nd, and it’s already causing a commotion. The band, who released no less than three EPs last year, mostly to blogger loving and gushing. The jury is still out on the full length, but I will say that I’m really enjoying this cut more than the one that has been circulating around so far. The song, Blood Red Blood, has all the elements that have people excited about this record, but with some crazy horns throughout the song as well. But, overall, Ramesh’s vocals soar and hit the mark here. Voxtrot - Blood Red Blood Thanks To Our Sponsor: Domain Name Register from Loudsign Technorati Tags: Voxtrot, blogger

Jesse Malin - Glitter In The Gutter
2007-03-20 16:11:29
It’s a really great day to get out and hit up your local indie record store today. With releases from Ted Leo, Modest Mouse, Andrew Bird and many more, you should really make it a point to get shopping. One of the other releases today that may have flown below or around your radar is the new one from Jesse Malin . The former D-Generation east coast punkster drops his third full length on us today, “Glitter in the Gutter.” I may be alone when I say this, but this album is really freaking good. It’s true, it seems like Malin has taken the really great things from his first two albums, which seemed inconsistent and at times confusing, and made what is easily his best record to date. It’s the first time Malin has strayed from his New York comfort zone to record as he did so It could be in part to the excellent cast of contributors. The album not only features lots of collaboration with drinking buddy Ryan Adams but also boasts a guitar work from Josh Ho

Of Montreal - Live @ Southgate House
2007-03-21 23:24:23
Many thanks to Dave for the following write up from last nights Of Montreal gig in Newport, KY at the Southgate House . No reports of nudity or anything too shocking from Kevin Barnes, but we dont mind. Seeing a mammoth tour bus in the back of the normally subdued Southgate House was not something I expected for a show by Of Montreal. Nor did I expect a line extending down the steps and out onto the sidewalk, approximately encompassing 200 people. Nor did I expect the show to be sold out. But all three happened, and all three magnify the spectacular level to which Kevin Barnes has taken his and his band’s musical career. Truly the show was a demonstration in theatrics, as Barnes changed costumes approximately five times, even standing on a ladder during “Gronlandic Edit” to fully complete his insanely colorful outfit. It was also the first time I’ve ever seen wall projections done at Southgate, with random cartoon images being projected onto a giant white curtain behind the

Aqualung - Memory Man
2007-03-21 16:11:39
You may or may not remember, but some time ago, one of the first proper interviews ENS did with a real live in person artist was with Matt Hales, aka Aqualung . You can still view the interview and some great photos here. Because of how kind Matt was and also because we love his music so much, makes us big fans of him and his work. So, naturally, when the new album came out last week I went out and picked up a copy. The first single from the album, Pressure Suit, is an incredible starting point for this album, his second full length to hit the US. It shines very bright and you can tell from the sharp production that Matt’s team has brought their collective “A Game” to achieve it. The album outside of Pressure Suit is what many fans of Aqualung are hoping for, his signature keys and heartfelt penned songs. I feel constantly drawn into the softer moments of the album only to be jarred awake with a strong chorus or triumphant instrumentation. This combination of so

New Robbers On High Street - Grand Animals
2007-03-22 17:55:58
It’s not due to hit shelves till June, so I was a bit surprised to see the new full length from Robbers On Street .htm">High Street hit my mailbox this week. Even so, after 3 times through, it’s a bit of an early dissapointment. The strongest tracks so far are the ones you are already familiar with. “The Fatalist” and “Married Young” from the late 06 EP. And “Crown Victoria”, which has been a live standby from the band for awhile now. The jury remains out on this one, as it should, since we are still 3 months from a street date. And in the interest of not getting too ahead of ourselves, here is a track from “Grand Animals ” for your streaming enjoyment. Daniel Johnston Coming to Cincinnati, Now A Nazi?
2007-03-22 17:30:06
Imagine my excitement to see that Daniel Johnston is slated to be coming to Cincinnati this spring, only to turn a corner and hear about his recent Nazi loving exploits at his show in Austin during SXSW. Daniel’s mental issues are well documented, mostly by himself, and came to the surface in the documentary, “The Devil And Daniel Johnston”, which is still the best music documentary I have ever seen. But, back to Daniel’s recent antisemitism, here is a quote from IndyWeekBlog that gives a short piece of dialouge from a performance Daniel did last week in Austin. Today at the Convention Center, Austin icon and OG “outsider artist” Daniel Johnston told two jokes before a jam-packed day stage crowd: 1. “I heard they just sentenced a man to the death penalty… for trying to commit suicide.” 2. “I heard the Jews are having a pajama party… at the concentration camp.” Daniel punctuated the last one, which drew a pretty uncomfortable silence, with a Nazi

Backyard Tire Fire - Vagabonds and Hooligans
2007-03-23 16:39:02
Out of the heart of the midwest, in Bloomington, Illinois comes Backyard Tire Fire. Not only does the name of the band suggest the sound you may hear, but it’s midwest roots also lean towards their DNA, which is excellent alt-country. The debut album from the three piece, Vagabonds and Hooligans is really right up my alley. I can see the Wilco comparisons, but I tend to think they are more in the Uncle Tupelo mold. Especially when after the great title cut, the band changes lead vocals on track three, “Green Eyed Soul” and makes me feel like it’s a switch from Tweedy to Farrar. High praise for another alt-country rock band out of Illinois, but it’s hard for me not to make the comparison. The band has already shared the stage with the likes of The Slip, and Jay Bennett, and you can see in the dates below that they will continue to add to that impressive list. BTF will be doing a date here in the Cincy area as well, on April 18th @ The Southgate House.

The Rosebuds - Night Of The Furies
2007-03-26 20:06:26
The Rosebuds are a band that tends to push the envelope when it comes to their music and with their new album, Night of the Furies, that remains true. The first single, and the download below, “Get Up, Get Out” is a dancey little number with loads of catchiness. It seems that Ivan and Kelly hit up the local club scene for inspiration on this disc. They continue to pass vocal duties back and forth throughout the disc, and still manage to haunt and seduce the listener. It’s a positive progression from the 2005 release that originally caught my ear, Birds Make Good Neighbors. Night of the Furies is out from Merge Records on April 10. M Ward - Duet for Guitars #2 To Be Re-Released
2007-03-28 15:41:49
Just got some great news from Merge Records that an M Ward gem will see a re-release this July. Duet For Guitars #2 is the foundation for Matt’s solo career and is an album all M Ward fans should have a copy of. However, it’s increasingly difficult to find since it’s original release in 2000 so it’s great to see Merge doing a re-issue. In other M Ward news, he looks to have some new material slated for this fall as well, as the announcement of a new digital single, called “Early Morning Rain” will see a release in November.  Matt is also on the road currently with Norah Jones. J Roddy Walston & The Business - Hail Mega Boys
2007-03-27 15:24:52
When it comes to pure, unadulterated rock music, there aren’t nearly enough bands these days that do it the way J Roddy does. Roddy and his bandmates got their start in the dirty south, bouncing around to Tennessee bars playing their songs. The live aspect of their show has always been an easy sell, many that catch the band live become instant fans, as the energy and downright fun the band is having on stage is quite contagious. The band later moved together to the Baltimore area, and have since built up an even bigger following locally and regionally. Until now though, the band hasn’t been able to really translate the live energy into a recorded disc. EP’s have been recorded and “CDR’d” by the band to sell at shows, to give people a reminder of the great live show they witnessed, but a proper full length was always waiting in the wings. Well, the full length album is here now, and it’s certainly worth the wait. The album, “Hail M
