A Couple of Things
2008-07-05 01:55:00
Today marks the three month anniversary of this blog. That is significant because three months seems to be the magic number for some odd reason. Blog Review, Pay Per Post, Blogvertise and others demand you have your blog up for at least three months. Odd thing now, I am no longer interested in getting involved in these pay per post type thingies. It seems fifty million people are bidding on

Independence Day
2008-07-04 07:10:00
How sad is it that so many school children and adults don’t associate Independence Day with July 4th. I remember a CBS poll a few years back, prior to Independence Day , where they asked in a telephone poll why do we celebrate July 4th. Only 58% said correctly that July 4th is officially (there is debate it really should be celebrated July 2nd) Independence Day for the U.S.A. I remember

Sign of the Times
2008-07-03 06:55:00
I read with disbelief an article in the Cape Cod Times (Falmouth, MA) about a 14 year old boy pushing a 71 year old man off a pier because he “thought it would be funny.” The elderly man was fishing with his grandson when this 14 year old punk decided to show what a cool kid he was by doing this despicable act. The elderly gentleman suffered lacerations to his knees as a result of the fall.

The Countdown Begins
2008-07-02 07:00:00
As I have stated previously, on this blog, I have back surgery (lumbar) scheduled for July 10th. As I have also stated previously, that is exactly 13 years to the day I had my first back surgery. I’ve endured pain for as much as I can tolerate now. It’s gotten to the point I can’t drive my little Honda Civic. I’m too tall to own a car that small. But, the MPG made it a necessity. I

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts – July 01, 2008
2008-07-01 07:06:00
Is it just me or is this year zooming by? July? Already July???? Geez, only six more months of shopping until Christmas. It seems this year barely got started and we are past the halfway point. On January 1, 2008, did anyone really believe Senator Obama would be the Democratic nominee for President? Did anyone on January 1, 2008 think they would be paying $4+ a gallon for gas? Did anyone

Things That Frustrate Me
2008-07-30 06:51:00
Inconsiderate drivers. How many times have you gotten behind someone who, all of a sudden hits their brakes to make a right turn? They seem to forget there is this new thing out called “turn signals.” Honestly, how much effort does it take to hit the turn signal on your car? I almost went up the tailpipe of a Chevy Malibu Tuesday morning. With me still recovering from back surgery, it

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts – July 29, 2008
2008-07-29 06:31:00
Has July zoomed by in record time or is it just me? Admittedly, I have been busy this month with surgery, recovery and so forth. I just find it hard to believe we are in the last week of this month! I have noticed, once I reached 30, the weeks, months and years seemed to go by a lot quicker. My yard is in desperate need of mowing. The guy I hired back in May is not answering his phone.

1st Amendment: A Clear and Present Danger
2008-07-26 09:17:00
There is a case involving bloggers who have been harshly critical of the police in Memphis, TN, especially Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin. What is at stake here is the freedom to criticize a governmental body with which you disagree. A lawsuit has been filed against AOL to produce any and all email addresses associated with MPD 2.0, a blog popular with police officers. What this

Met Some Interesting People…
2008-07-25 07:00:00
…during my stay in the hospital this month. It was unusual in that people I didn’t even know would stop by my room to ask how I was doing. It was just ordinary people who were at the hospital to visit their relatives, friends, etc. I didn’t mind it at all. I’m just not the type of person that could ever do that. But, it’s gratifying to know there are people who are complete stranger

Reflections on My Surgery – Finale
2008-07-23 11:11:00
As I said in Part Two, my temperature had shot up to 103 and had shown no signs of dropping. Nurses were becoming concerned about that. I honestly didn’t feel like I had a temperature. I know that when I have a high fever, my eyes are burning and I feel hot all over. But, I didn’t feel that way. So, I had to take their word for it. About 3AM, however, whatever medication they started

Reflections on My Surgery – Part Two
2008-07-21 07:11:00
I remember coughing as I regained consciousness in the recovery room. I could hear someone saying, “You’re in the recovery room, David…you’re out of surgery.” I thought, “Well, thanks for that update.” The room was spinning and I couldn’t really focus my eyes on any one object. I told the nurse what was happening and she gave me something that stopped the vertigo I was experien

Reflections on My Surgery – Part One
2008-07-19 07:03:00
As stated previously on this blog, I had back surgery on July 10th. It was my second back surgery and one with which I am still in the process of trying to recover. I had to be in the surgical prep area by 6:30AM. I was asked a variety of questions; are you allergic to blah, blah, blah, what is your religious affiliation, and so on. It was standard procedure and I expected it. What I didn’

Back in the Saddle Again
2008-07-17 11:56:00
With apologies to the late Gene Autry, I am back in the saddle once again to irritate, underwhelm, bore and provide “scintillating” posts on this blog. Well, eventually I will. I’m still in the recovery stage. Four days in the hospital was a misery I can’t really express in mere words. Back surgery is something one should never experience more than once in a lifetime. I have now

GPS: My First Experience
2008-08-14 04:53:00
I finally broke down and bought a voice-driven GPS device for my car about a month ago. I have not really used it since I bought it. Like my first experience with computers, it scared me. Now, I do computer maintenance as a sideline in my retirement age. Go figure. Anyway, I put it in my car, turned it on so it could locate satellites and I put in my home information. This was all done

Olympics. I can remember a time when I got excited about the Summer Olympics. It was a time when the participants were actually amateurs or as close as they could classified in that category anyway. Watching NBA players decimate China just isn’t as much fun as it was when the kids were college all-stars. But, it appears the rest of the world was putting their highly paid “amateurs” in th

The Light in the Window
2008-08-11 06:56:00
It was ten years ago yesterday that Mrs. Davis passed away. August 10, 2008. I’m not sure why the month and date stick out in my mind so well. But, I do know the reason the year does; it was the same year my mother passed away. Mrs. Davis was a bit of a celebrity locally and actually made the news in some newspapers across the nation back in the late 60s. It wasn’t so much something she d

Old Yellow
2008-08-08 07:05:00
There has been an influx of feral cats in my neighborhood over the past few months. They seem to be popping up everywhere. They also seem to know when the animal control officer is coming around. They ALL disappear as if on cue. People have been complaining about them since early this year. They are extremely territorial. If one cat infringes on another’s territory, fights break out. It

Debt Free At Last
2008-08-07 07:00:00
About ten years ago, I had seven or eight credit cards. I had Master Card, Visa, Firestone Credit Card, JC Penny, etc. I also had a hellacious debt that almost put me on the brink of bankruptcy. I was barely making the minimum monthly payments which, in turn, barely covered the interest that was accumulating each month. In short, I was going nowhere, fast. So, I managed to take out a

One of the More Bizarre Homicides
2008-08-06 07:09:00
Last week, 37 year old Anthony Hopkins of Mobile, AL, was charged with rape, sodomy, incest and murder. That would make headlines in any city, especially a relatively small city like Mobile, AL. But, that was not the end of his heinous crimes. His wife, who had been missing for nearly four years, was found in the home freezer by Mobile police. Arletha Hopkins was found in the freezer by

Gas prices. Gas prices, at least in my area, have dropped over $.20 in the past two weeks. Oil prices, for the most part, have dropped steadily throughout July and into August . Just as I suspected it would, as in any overvalued stock, the price had to drop. But, even at $3.79/gallon in our area, it is a hardship for most people. I don’t know if prices will drop below $3.00/gallon or not.

Civilian Casualties in Korean War
2008-08-04 06:52:00
This report, which came out yesterday about alleged US atrocities during the Korean War, is more than disturbing. It’s downright disgusting…and scary. I know accidents in war happen. Collateral damage is unavoidable. But, if this latest report is true, there needs to be a thorough examination of our interaction with civilians when we go to war. We need to take another look at rules of

The Boys of Autumn
2008-08-01 07:20:00
I know we are still in the dog days of summer. All I have to do is step outside this air-conditioned house to know that. But, there is a certain excitement in the air…a certain anticipation amongst certain sports fans. Football is once again about to take center stage. It’s my favorite time of the year! I am much more of a college football fan (Alabama Crimson Tide) than an NFL guy. Most

Wal-Mart and the Gypsies
2008-07-31 06:49:00
I have seen gypsies around my area on the gulf coast for as long as I can remember. I can recall them setting up a camp near the Alabama-Mississippi state line as a boy. Mama always told me to stay away from them. She didn’t have to tell me twice. I’m not real familiar with their ethnic background. I read a little on Wikipedia about them. They are nomadic, which I already knew, and are

Some Minor Car Damage
2008-09-04 08:00:00
I got a surprise yesterday morning as I walked to my Honda Civic. After thinking I had escaped hurricane damage to house and vehicle, I was surprised to see a dent on the roof of my car. It was just above the rear view mirror. I also noticed there is a crack from the top of the windshield, stretching about three inches. As if that were not enough, I also found a dent on the driver-side

A Scarcity of Goods
2008-09-03 07:14:00
One of the many problems associated with hurricanes is the aftermath. This time we were very lucky in that there was little or no damage locally. But, there are other issues to deal with right now. One of those is batteries. Any size, shape or brand is just about gone. I needed D size batteries for my battery operated fans. No luck in finding any. None. Bottled water? Good luck with

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts – September 02, 2008

Gustav. Although Hurricane Gustav did little damage to my hometown of Mobile, AL, it was enough to bring back memories of Hurricane Katrina. We thought we would get nailed by that storm. It seemed to creep just east of New Orleans as it made landfall. We suffered some damage here from Katrina. No electricity in Mobile in late August to early September is not recommended. But, we all know

Gustav: Final Update - Mobile, AL
2008-09-01 17:55:00
I did not do any other updates yesterday and to day due to several things. One, I had to make sure my house was protected as much as one can protect it for a hurricane. That include boarding up windows, getting last minute food items, water, canned good, etc., and several odds and ends you have to prepare. The Hurricane hit just southwest of New Orleans. At time of this posting, New Orleans

Gustav: Update #4 - Mobile, AL
2008-08-31 09:36:00
As I suspected would happen, Gustav has taken a slight easterly track. This means Mobile will get, at the very least, strong tropical force winds (39-73MPH) and possibly minimal hurricane force winds. Katrina sent tropical force winds at 60-65MPH at a steady rate with gust up to 83MPH. It caused significant damage in Mobile. We are now under a hurricane warning. I suspect my updates will

Gustav: Update #3 - Mobile, AL
2008-08-30 15:44:00
Hurricane Gustav is now a very dangerous storm. It is a Cat IV hurricane with the potential for Cat V. The projected path still appears to be central-SW Louisiana. The one thing I have learned over the years is to expect the unexpected when it comes to a hurricane. No one really knows where it is going to go. That is why I am still apprehensive. If New Orleans gets the east side of this

Gustav: Update #2 - Mobile, AL
2008-08-30 07:44:00
Hurricane Gustav is now (at time of this posting) packing 80MPH winds as it exploded overnight after it passed into open waters of the northwestern Carribbean Sea Friday night. Project path is between Texas coastline to central Louisiana. As with all hurricanes, you have to prepare even though you are not in the current projected path. This thing can change within a couple of hours. I've seen
