“Mama”
2008-05-11 06:35:00
Unlike many people reading this blog today, I will not be celebrating Mother’s Day with my mother. My mother, my “Mama”, passed away 10 years ago this year. Mama died on April 11th, 1998, Good Friday. She had many health issues, ranging from severe arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney stones, constant urinary tract infections, heart attack and subsequent triple bypass operation

The X
2008-05-10 11:17:00
I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with my X, as in ex-wife, Thursday morning. Actually, we chat on about a monthly basis. I try not to call her or email her. I let her do that. Why? A lot of it has to do with the way our divorce went and the situation that she put me in as a result (see my post “Divorce”). It was a very distressing period in my life. Unfortunately, I needed her

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts

Why is it so difficult for people to use their car’s turn signals? If they have a disability, I can understand (although I’m sure there is a way for disabled people to be able to do this). I can’t tell you the number of times I have gotten behind people to suddenly see brake lights and then they just run right. It seems to be the same no matter what town, city, state or region of the count

Woolmarket: The White Dog
2008-05-12 07:05:00
This is the third in a series on a time in my life spent in a backwoods, backwater area called Woolmarket, MS. If you enjoy country living, this would have been the place for you. The first two installments were Woolmarket: The Beginning and Woolmarket: The Bridge. During that first summer in Woolmarket, we found out what heat and humidity were all about. In the late fifties, air

The Birds
2008-05-14 07:03:00
Living on the gulf coast, you always keep an eye out for the seagulls. Not because they are inherently dangerous (well...I'll get to that in a moment). But, seagulls are a good indicator of what's going on out in the Gulf of Mexico. If it's bad weather, say 10-15 miles out from shore, the gulls can be found flocking all over parking lots in the supermarkets, department stores, malls, etc.

Friends after Retirement
2008-05-15 07:07:00
I worked for a federal agency for almost 19 years before I was forced into retirement due to a physical disability. During those 19 years, I met some great people. There were some people I would trust with my inner most secrets. They were people I thought I could count on when times were tough. I had, what I considered, a great bunch of friends at work. But, it seems once I retired, left the

There was a topic on another blog earlier this week concerning “human rights”. I suppose I haven’t been paying attention. If this is Human Rights Week, I apologize in advance for not even being aware of the focus on this issue this week. The poster in question made some salient points about this country not honoring human rights even when we are subjected to something less than human righ

Two Events This Week
2008-05-16 07:15:00
Tuesday, former President James (again, I refuse to use the quaint “Jimmy” for him) Carter was in Mobile to help with the building of homes in the Hillsdale area. This is a former community rented to students of the University of South Alabama. It became so dilapidated, USA forced people to move out. The homes there were soon razed. President Carter was there Tuesday to help out with his

The Great Shame
2008-05-19 06:44:00
Since my entry into the blogging world (April 5th, 2008, a day that has no memory), I have had the opportunity to “meet” a few people and read some really quality blogs. One of those people and one of those blogs is Matt at “Matt – Speak”. It is quite the excellent blog, if he doesn’t mind me putting in a plug for him. Very well thought out and a blog I’m sure you would enjoy. Ma

“No Soliciting or Proselytizing Please”
2008-05-18 07:19:00
That’s the sign I have had in my front lawn to try and make it clear I’m not interested. I’ve had it there for two years. But, I might as well take it down with all the effect it has had. In fact, I am starting to believe it is bringing in more sales people and church people to my front door. I had three sales people and two little old ladies from the Jehovah Witnesses knock on my door

Gas Price Update: They’re still rising. Breaking news, I know. Lowest gas price I can find in my area (Mobile, AL) is $3.71/gallon. I’m far from being an economic analyst. But, you don’t need a PhD in economics to figure out the economy can’t sustain energy prices this high for much longer. Food prices, clothing, utilities…everything is going up. President Bush’s visit with the

Stupid Celebrity Quotes
2008-05-22 06:47:00
It seems the news media, in their always desperate attempt to drum up news when there really isn’t any, always manages to pull the rabbit out of the hat in Hollywood or Washington D.C. Most of these “celebrities” never met a camera they didn’t like. They are so profound in their statements concerning any hot button issue of the day! I’m not sure why having your face plastered on the

The Long Goodbye
2008-05-21 06:56:00
I went yesterday to visit my Aunt Sue. It was a very difficult visit due to her having Alzheimer’s disease. She is in the last stages (stage 7) of the disease. It is a disease that destroys brain cells, thus eliminating memory, thinking and behavior. In some cases, the patients are quite belligerent. My Aunt is one of those patients with that behavior. When I came in to visit yesterday, she

It seems like since I retired, I work more now than I did when I was in the active work force. This little computer maintenance part-time job has turned into a full-time job. Thus, I have little time to do the things I would like to do other than this blog (which I have become addicted to on so many levels). Not only does the computer maintenance sideline take up my time, but other things,

Memorial Day - The True Meaning
2008-05-25 07:13:00
Today and/or tomorrow there will be many people on the highway to the beaches, various parks around the nation. Some will just grill to their heart’s content in the backyard. This is the way Memorial Day is celebrated in this nation. And that’s as it should be. It should be a celebration for the freedom to do these things as we wish. But, we should not forget what the true meaning of

Job Opportunities Update
2008-05-24 08:18:00
I have in previous blog entries given information about all the job opportunities available in Mobile, AL to those who are interested and really want to work. I have mentioned the gigantic air tanker contract awarded to Northrop Grumman/EADS to be built in Mobile that is currently being contested by Boeing. The GAO will issue a final decision on June 19th. We are expecting a favorable ruling

School’s Out for Summer!
2008-05-26 07:10:00
With apologies to Alice Cooper, it’s been more years than I care to remember since I was in school. But, I can still remember the exhilaration of the final day of the school year and what it meant as a youngster. The last official school day of the year here in Mobile County was last Friday. Thousands of kids jumped for joy. Truth be known, quite a few teachers also were relieved for the

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts – May 27, 2008
2008-05-27 07:00:00
Don’t people know gas prices are skyrocketing and we will be at a national average of about $4.00/gallon in two weeks or less? You wouldn’t know it by the number of people at nearby beaches and parks yesterday. Gulf Shores was, quite literally, wall to wall people. Parks? Good luck trying to find an RV hookup if you own one. It was unbelievable. There were signs, however, the gas crunch

Riptide: The Danger and How to Survive
2008-05-29 07:21:00
Riptide or Rip Current or even undertow; however you use the term, it can be deadly. It doesn’t have to be that way for swimmers. But, it often is. Three people drowned from being caught in riptide over the Memorial Day weekend at nearby beaches on the gulf coast. It is usually out of town people, people who most likely are not accustomed to the dangers our beautiful beaches present.

My Nissan Truck
2008-05-28 07:09:00
There are many things people are being forced to do due to the incredible rise in gas prices. I see many more people on motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. In fact, I saw one man, in what appeared to be a uniform city water works employees wear, on a bicycle this morning near my home. If that were the case, he had about a 10 mile bicycle ride to get to work. There are a lot of people using

Ralph
2008-05-30 06:53:00
Regular readers of this blog have seen me mention my, now, 10 week old beagle puppy named Ralph . He has been a joy to me and we go everywhere that dog and man can go together. He’s the first beagle I have owned in many, many years. He’s my little buddy. I noticed after Sunday’s Frisbee tossing, Ralph was listless and seemed to be coughing. I thought he got overheated and took him in the

Famous Last Words
2008-05-31 07:18:00
Down through history, when people are at their deathbed or facing the gallows chamber, they have been given a chance to say their last words on this earth. Most are not worth spending time to even try and figure what they meant. Some are noteworthy and have made their way into books, pamphlets, and, lo and behold, the World Wide Web. I have here today a few for my loyal readers to look upon

Story of Faith
2008-06-02 07:01:00
Yesterday I witnessed something that brought back memories of many years ago. It brought back my leaving home and going to Naples, Italy for assignment at Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH). It also brought back memories of ‘Nam. Yesterday another one of America’s sons left for Iraq to fight that “dirty little war.” I won’t go into my thoughts on our involvement since I always g

Nervous Time
2008-06-01 06:27:00
Camille. Charley. Ivan. Rita. Katrina. All names that will live in infamy if you live on the gulf coast of the United States. Perhaps none bring the fear factor into play more than Katrina. The repercussions from that hurricane are still being felt as I type this blog entry. Yes, it’s that time of year again. The first official day of hurricane season is today. And, as if on cue,

Tuesday’s Rambling Thoughts – June 03, 2008
2008-06-03 07:08:00
It seems I will be forced to go to the “Sex and the City” showing this week. My girlfriend (I feel strange calling her that at my age…I guess we’ll be going steady next) is either refusing to answer the phone, can’t meet me for lunch, blah, blah, blah, real busy right now, blah, blah blah. I get the message. I would rather walk barefoot over hot, burning coals than be caught at this m

Blogging: Lessons Learned
2008-06-05 06:42:00
I’m coming up on two months in the Blogosphere…two months. For some reason, it seems longer…much longer. When I started out, it was like a new toy. Some days, I would post three times. It was/is exciting and gives me a venue to explore my writing obsession. I wanted to go to college to become a writer when I was in high school. Unfortunately, there was this war going on in Southeast
