Get Fit with Nintendo Wii-Fit (Coming Soon) 2007-07-12 21:17:25 Nintendo
is planning to enter the fitness arena using its very popular Wii
game console. The company is working on a program tentatively called "Wii Fit" that will hit the market the first half of 2008. Wii Fit is designed to build on the sweat inducing success of Wii Sports. The sports games are controlled by moving around a motion-sensing remote control instead of a joystick with buttons. So for a tennis game, players actually stand before the TV screen and use the control as a tennis racket. As a result, players burn calories because they are actually moving around instead of sitting down with a joystick and just moving their fingers. Read more:Coming Soon
Make Safety a Part of Your Healthcare 2007-07-17 23:54:35 Today my wife and I almost ran into a car on our way to the gym as we crossed an intersection. As we drove through the intersection, a car to our right ran the red light. I slammed the breaks and hit my horn. We could see the startled driver talking on his cell phone as he drove by. He simply wasn’t paying attention. Surprisingly, a police car was sitting at the red light to our left but he did nothing. We couldn’t believe the police officer didn’t see the close call! Many people are caught up into staying fit to prevent disease and live a long healthy life, but they don't pay close attention to potential accidents. Is Power Walking the Best Exercise? 2007-07-16 21:07:47 It is quite a leap to say something is “always the best”. Since walking is a recreational activity being embraced by more and more people, this topic seems to be popping up often. For some, walking is very challenging. For others it’s not hard at all. We cannot answer this question until we assess the situation. If a person is severely deconditioned, walking is a good challenge for him. A severely deconditioned person is one who has little endurance or muscle strength due to illness, injury, or years of inactivity. For everyone else, walking has a very slight effect on your aerobic fitness level. Read more:Walking

Study Finds Obesity is Socially Contagious 2007-07-25 21:15:36 According to a recent New England Journal of Medicine study funded by the National Institute on Aging, obesity is "socially contagious" and can spread easily from person to person. The study found that social ties seem to play a strong role in obesity, even more than genes. The chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend is obese, 40 percent if a sibling is obese and 37 percent if a spouse is obese. In the closest friendships, the risk almost tripled. This may explain why men gain weight when their pregnant wives or girlfriends gain weight. Read more:Study

What's so bad About Bread? 2007-07-31 13:13:32 When I worked a local gym, I was often approached by members asking me why they were not getting results anymore. One of the first questions I would ask is “How’s your diet?” The member, telling me what they thought I wanted to hear, usually said something like “I don’t eat bread anymore.” If I asked about fast food, I would sometimes hear “I’ll eat the burger without the bun.” This is a common practice because many people think bread is a high fat item. Let’s take a look: The average slice of bread contains 15 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of protein, and only 1 gram of fat! Read more:Bread

Lifespan of Americans Falling Behind Other Countries 2007-08-13 19:02:45 Something is wrong with this scenario. The richest country on the planet that spends the most on healthcare is decreasing in international rankings for life expectancy. Life expectancy in the United States is surpassed by Japan, most of Europe, Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands. Although Americans
are living longer than before, they are not living as long as 41 other countries.A baby born in the United States in 2004 will live an average of 77.9 years, however, the life expectancy ranks 42nd which is down from 11th just 20 years ago. These numbers are according to international numbers provided by the Census Bureau and domestic numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics. Read more:Countries
The + Little + Things = Success 2007-08-19 18:00:05 If you hang around me long enough, you’ll eventually hear me say “Your results are the sum of the little decisions you make everyday.” In the fitness world, this means that your efforts – good or bad – will determine how you look and feel. When people see a great body, they usually ask “What did she do to get a body like that?” A more appropriate question would be “What does she do?” I say this because there is no one exercise that gets you in great shape – there is no one food that makes you lose weight. However, now there are concerns about the impact of cell phone on hearing. As many people age they may find it more difficult to hear. Some hearing loss is due to overexposure of noise. Sodium Nitrite in Processed Meats Maybe a Silent Killer 2007-10-17 20:09:30 When discussing diet, a lot of people figure they’ll make their breakfast healthier by switching from regular bacon to turkey bacon. I am usually expected to discuss how great that is, but I don’t. I usually just say is that it’s good they are reducing they’re fat intake, and that I’m glad they are not eating fast food for breakfast everyday. What do I have against turkey bacon? Turkey bacon and other processed meats (like regular bacon, hot dogs, bologna, turkey lunch meat, corned beef and others) contain sodium nitrite. Read more:Sodium

Is Fast Food Really that Bad? 2007-11-01 20:51:46 Whenever you talk to a personal trainer about how to improve your eating habits, one of the first things he will say is “Don’t eat fast food!” This is because if you cut it out, you automatically cut down on saturated fats, processed foods, excess sugar and unnecessary chemicals in your body. Although we preach and teach this regularly, this advice is seldom followed because most people simply don’t think fast food is that bad. They figure if they eat it a few times a week, that’s not so bad because they work out. Take a closer look and you’ll see that eating fast food on a regular basis can derail the progress of even the most religious fitness buffs. Read more:Fast Food
Pregnancy and Exercise 2007-11-06 19:55:33 Many women feel that during pregnancy, they should take it easy. This is true if certain conditions demand that you stay off your feet, but if you are healthy you should exercise. As a bonus, being in good shape may even shorten your labor and speed your recovery – which means you lose that “baby weight” sooner! Read more:Pregnancy

Fighting Childhood Obesity 2007-12-05 19:14:57 As you watch television, more and more you’ll see shows about overweight children. Childhood
obesity is at an all time high, and it is especially alarming because it leaves children with problems typically found in adults – diabetes and high blood pressure and cholesterol, for example. Parents get on talk shows seeking help for their overweight kids. They usually want to know what causes childhood obesity. In rare cases, there are genetic diseases which cause childhood obesity, but for the most part it’s caused by children eating too much and following their parents’ sedentary lifestyle. Are You Insane? 2007-12-19 16:41:49 Someone once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. As a trainer, I see a lot of this. People want to get in shape, but most don’t make lasting changes in their lives. The results we want are not achieved, the goals we set are not reached, and we’re right back where we started. If you want a drastic change, you must re-vamp your lifestyle. For example, if you really want to get rid of that extra back fat or that spare tire, do you really think you can do it while you continue to eat the way you currently do with only minor changes?
Pump up Your Workouts with the Tabata Method 2008-02-26 21:06:00 There are many ways to increase the intensity of your workouts. In order to do so, you could increase the weight you lift, increase the amount of reps you perform, or increase the number of sets you do. Incorporating any or all of these three factors can give you an unlimited number of combinations for changing your workout. But there is another, often overlooked, factor: time. Shortening your rest periods or performing an exercise for a certain amount of time can give you a big boost in intensity. The Tabata method incorporates this time factor. This method got its name from a Japanese researcher who found a way to increase aerobic and anaerobic pathways at the same time.
Echinacea: The Beloved Immunity Booster 2008-02-23 12:41:05 Echinacea, which is highly regarded as the most important immune stimulant, has been used for over a century as a treatment for a wide variety of problems. In the early 1900’s, Echinacea attracted even more attention and has become a popular treatment for colds and flu. The interesting thing about this herb is that it does not simply attack the infection that has invaded your body. Echinacea contains a substance that prevents the infection from invading the cells. In other words, Echinacea helps your body fight the infection on its own – it stimulates your immune system. Read more:Immunity

The Soft Drink Dilemma 2008-02-22 20:55:06 One of the first things you can do to help improve your eating habits is to stop drinking soft drinks. Soft drinks include sodas, punches, and juice cocktails, and they add unnecessary calories and sugar to your daily intake. Liquid calories that go down easy will quickly sneak up on you. In addition to the calories, the sweetness in soft drinks encourages the desire for more sweet stuff. Most sweet snacks, for many, are a hindrance to weight loss, as they are calorie dense and nutritionally deficient. It’s easy to see how regular soft drinks can derail your wellness and weight loss efforts. Read more:Drink
