Antidepressants - An Assault on Human Emotion
2008-04-06 21:42:06
This topic is something I am most passionate about.  Every lecture I give, every patient I talk to, any chance I have, I discuss this horrible exploitation of human emotion in North America.  Every third American, every third patient in my office is on SSRI’s (antidepressants).  Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro…. SSRI prescriptions have skyrocketed over the last decade and so have the pockets of drug companies Prozac alone netted over 180 billion dollars last year in profit.   Let’s break down the words in SSRI:  Selective Seretonin Reuptake Inhibitor.  This means that the drug Selectively Inhibits the receptors sites for Sereotonin blocking its resorption thereby allowing Seretonin to float within the synaptic cleft longer increasin

Tips for a Restful Sleep
2008-03-23 16:47:37
Sleep provides the basic foundation of health. Many studies have found relationships between the quantity and quality of one's sleep and many health problems.  For example, lack of sleep may be linked to weight gain, cardiovascular problems and the onset of diabetes just to name a few. How much sleep is enough? A minimum of 6-8 hours of sleep each night is recommended for maximum rest.  Hours of sleep before midnight are known to be the most beneficial.  If you get 8 hours of sleep between 10 pm and 6 am, you will be better rested than if you slept 8 hours between 12 am and 8 am.

The Paradigm Shift In Health
2008-03-23 15:43:24
The focus of conventional medicine is to treat patients only after symptoms of ill health appear.  The treatment involves ridding the body of those presented symptoms, and once the symptoms disappear the patient is deemed healthy once again. The two major killers of our time, cancer and heart disease live and grow in the body for many years before any symptoms appear.  Cancer generally takes seven to fifteen years to grow, and heart disease usually takes twenty to thirty years to develop in the body before symptoms sound an alarm.

Apple Cider Vinegar It Tastes Horrible But It Sure Does Work!
2008-04-07 23:26:12
Apple cider vinegar or ACV is an amazing potent detoxifier that has been shown to boost the immune response, sooth arthritis and joint pain, cure heartburn and help people with Fibromyalgia. ACV contains a chemical called Malic Acid (kinda like my name), which is an Aluminum detoxifier.  Aluminum is a horribly sneaky neurotoxin that has found it’s way into our cookware, food containers, toothpaste, anti-prespirants and vaccines.  This is a loaded topic that gets me very passionate.  I’ll post an article on toxins soon where I discuss the ill effects of aluminum. Take 1-3 tablespoons of ACV throughout the day and up the dose when you’re feeling ill and this simple cheap sauce will go to work healing your body!  It tastes great on salads too. Bottoms up!

Alkalinity: The Power of Going Green
2008-04-07 23:17:52
If you listen to one thing I write about.  If you take one piece of advice, it’s this! The power of creating an alkaline environment in your body can be the difference between poor health and amazing vitality! The pH of the blood should be 7.63.  An alkaline environment is where cells thrive and have the best potential to regenerate and complete their cycle.  Acid environments, those created by diets loaded with protein (Atkins, American), highly refined carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods. So it’s simple acid kills cells and the opposite, alkalinity lets cells grow and do their thing. The more acid we have in our bodies also promotes fat tissue to stick around because it buffers acid.  Acid in the body is also associated with osteoporosis and kidney st

GERD aka Heartburn Oh How It Burns!
2008-04-07 00:20:28
So let’s talk about GERD.  Acid reflux is now treated with powerful chemical mediators called H ion proton pump inhibitors.  This mouthful of words simply means that a drug like Zantac or Prilosec takes the H ion from HCL (hydrochloric acid, the acid in your tummy that breaks down your food so that vital nutrients can be absorbed) and stops it from being pumped out by the cells lining your stomach so that you won’t be able to create HCl only Chloride.  With side effects like Abdominal Pain, Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Increased Heart Rate, Headache, Insomnia, Fever, Sore Throat and Chest pain to name a few it is an important question to ask why do we are being prescribed these drugs in such huge numbers.

Tony Robbins - The Ultimate Success Strategy And Why It Works!
2008-04-08 20:40:25
I recently had the chance to attend Unleash the Power Within (UPW) a Tony Robbins Seminar in Los Angeles California.  I have been following Tony Robbins for some time now and greatly appreciate his work and his contribution to improving and expanding human possibility.  Our lives today and our futures are mediated by our own limitations.  I have always believed in breaking past social norms and expectations and blasting through new levels of human potential and accomplishment. The line “if you believe you will achieve” is true in it’s very essence.  The power of belief is real.  People in society tend to focus on their limitations: I’m too fat, I’m going to get heart disease because dad had it, I’m stupid, I’m depressed and

“Just for the taste of it! Diet....!” You know the rest. A few questions to ask yourself. Do you think headaches are normal? Do you think your nervous system is important? Do you think diseases like multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrigs (ALS) and Alzheimer’s come about because of bad luck? WE CREATE OUR HEALTH DESTINY. Before Learning about how terrifying aspartame really is with over 92 side effects! Let’s look back and see how it has found its way into our lives, all the way back to 1965. 1965 : James Schlatter, a scientist for the pharmaceutical company G.D. Searle while trying to make something else got an intermediary chemical onto his fingers and it tasted sweet. That chemical was aspartylphenylalanine-methyl-ester (aspartame).

Phthalates, Dioxins and Bisphenol-A: The toxins in our plastic bottles and containers
2008-04-16 23:43:05
This is a really hot topic right now. There are harmful chemicals in our plastic bottles and containers that leach into our foods and beverages.  It’s not only the food and drink you ingest that you have to be careful about but it’s also the vessels in which they come in too. There are three chemicals to be concerned with: Bisphenol-A, Phthalates and Dioxins.

2008-04-25 01:36:04
So here’s the skinny! If you want to lose weight fast, decrease your cancer risk, oxygenate your whole body, build a strong heart and increase your lung capacity CARDIO is key. The American Heart Association recommends we have 45 minutes of cardio a day. Well that might not be realistic or even necessary. It involves doing rapid spurts or intervals during a workout like running or cycling and it burns fat, makes you sweat and ups the adrenal to keep you feeling great for hours after your workout! The Amazing Healing Power of Humour: Laughter Medicine
2008-04-26 04:00:04
When we laugh our bodies release a cocktail of hormones & chemicals that have astonishing positive effects on the systems running our bodies. Stress is reduced, blood pressure drops, depression is lifted, your immune system is boosted & more. Western science is just starting to discover the great effects of laughter. It is currently being used in some progressive cancer treatment centers but clearly not enough in everyday America. Laughter is the best pill on the planet! Mixing laughter with living is one reason the rest of the world has a much better health picture than Americans. The laughter movement started with Dr. Madan Kataria in India in 1995 and now there are over 2000 laughter clubs all over the world. Who would have thought that happiness could bread healthfulness? Top 5 Health Foods: Dr Malik Recommended!
2008-04-28 00:21:07
ALMONDS - I’m nuts about nuts and almonds as far as nuts are concerned are hard to beat. They carry the most nutritional bang for your buck when compared to any other nut. QUINOA - This humble seed hails from the Andes. Once considered the “gold of the Incas" quinoa is rich in protein, yes protein, magnesium, manganese and copper. This single grain can aid cardiovascular health as well as calm down muscle spasms and migraines while detoxifying the body as a powerful antioxidant. In all my talks on nutrition I give quinoa honourable mention. Make quinoa your go to “grain”.

Plantar Fascitis Causes and Cures: Your Feet!
2008-05-03 18:32:05
Every week in our clinic I get to hear about foot pain. It is one of the common problems and commonly misunderstood in medicine. Plantar Fascitis occurs along the medial arch of the foot that can manifest pain anywhere from the inside of the heel to just behind big toe. A huge number of people have falling arches, women more so than men. This fact along with the majority of humanity wearing shoes that aren’t fit for them is the reason Plantar Fascitis occurs so often. The plantar fascia is a strip of muscle and tendon that extends between the inside of the heel (medial calcaneal tuberosity) and then forks into 5 pieces that fall behind all the toe bones (metatarsal heads). Here are the treatments most commonly recommended. Take a look and see if you can figure out why the results

Easy Energy and Weight Control: The Benefits of Water

Like the famous hip hop star Jay Z says in one of his songs, “H to the O!” (I’m sure that’s not what he meant but it works for the purpose of this article). Everyday in our clinic the importance of water has become a mantra. We hear so much about how our body is made primarily of water and that we need to drink lots. What is lots? Some say 8 cups a day, others say 64 ounces a day, some say

The Power Nap

When I was in high school my Enterprise 10 teacher Mr. Mcleod told us that the world’s most successful people have credited a portion of their success to their daily nap. He called it a Power Nap. He encouraged us all to take 10 to 20 minutes everyday to ourselves away from stimulus, "NO MORE" he stated sternly "JUST TWENTY MINUTES". It took me seven years later to take his advice. After my fir

Flip-Flop Sandal Scandal!

"Researchers at Auburn University have found that wearing flip-flops alters the way one walks, changing the gait in subtle ways that can lead to serious sole, heel and ankle problems. They presented these findings earlier this month at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis. The Auburn team videotaped 39 flip-flop-wearing volunteers and noticed how they
