Daily Painting Still Life, "Plate of Cherries
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Plate of Cherries "9X12Oil on CanvasPrivate Collectionnotes:(The photo has the edges of the frame included...looks a little crooked and I didn't have the heart to crop it for fear of losing some of the painting. And there is a glare from the light which shows at the top of the painting.)DetailYes, it took more than one day to paint this. In fact the cherries were really quite rotten by the time I was finished with it. So sad I couldn't eat them. There is a quote somewhere about painting pears...something about how patient they are, they just sit there and let you paint them without being ruined from the time involved. It's true. Not so with other fruits and flowers. Now you know the secret reason you see so many paintings of pears...and not so many cherries! :)

"Pansies & Periwinkle "9X12Oil on Linen PanelSoldDetailThis is a little brown pot I picked up at a consignment store in Clovis while on the Christmas trip. It seemed just the right size for my pansies......and as you can see, it is! My studio has transoms all around the ceiling and, while they let in a wonderful amount of indirect light, on a bright sunny day I get some of the sky reflecting on shiny surfaces. You can see that here on the brown pot....Carolina blue sky.

Daily Painting Child's Emblem, "Ella Grace"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Ella's Sign"8X20Acrylic on BoardClick to EnlargeAnother departure. I did this for the first grandchild's nursery a couple of years ago. It was too big for my scanner and this photo was lo res so it really doesn't show it off as well as I'd like. It's framed in a nice gold frame and hangs over her bed. Now there is another grandchild, Bennett, and I am wracking (is that the right word?) my brain to figure out his design. Frankly I'm stuck. There are the usual things...cars, trucks, trains, etc. I'm leaning toward a plane, but am not convinced that is just right. So.....anyway, I thought you might like to see this. I've had several other things getting in my way lately and haven't settled down enough to do something new. Hopefully the next post will be the latest painting.

Daily Painting Landscape, "Oreo in the Field"

"Oreo in the Field "18X24Oil on CanvasClick to EnlargeDriving you crazy with this jump in styles and media? If you think it makes you nuts, you oughta see the inside of my brain. On second thought...This was the big guy in his domain...our North Carolina trees and sky. This picture of the painting is a little blurry. Sorry. As you may know, this is the third version. One was an 8X10, one was a miniature 5X7, and this one is the whole scene 18X24. You can tell it is the same Oreo as before, same position, etc. I think I'm done with him...no more versions of this particular guy. For the moment, I am finished with the "Apple project" and looking around for the next subject to paint. Hopefully I will land on something inspiring in the next day or so....the winter landscape here right now is not doing it for me. Guess we'll see....

"Peonies Sketch"6X8Acrylic on PaperAvailable for purchase$100.00God was having a really good day when he made Peonies! They are absolutely my favorite flower, though heaven knows I love pansies, too. Anyway, I photographed my pink peonies when they were at their best and kept the photo for this study. I doubt I will ever do them justice, but it's worth the try. "Apple and Leaf"4X4WatercolorLicensing CollectionHere's your apple today!Still in the middle of the project...this is one motif added that also gets to be repeated in patterns. This means I am spending a great deal of time with our old friend photoshop. I have a headache already. Folks, I can tell you photoshop is both a blessing and a curse. It is so versatile and extensive it will do hundreds of thousands of things. On the other hand, it is complicated. I didn't go to school to learn photoshop because I'd rather be painting. I have had the good fortune of a good friend who knows it and has shown me just enough to be dangerous. Anyway, this apple is just a small part of the project I am working on. More later on that.

Daily Painting Abstract Still Life, "Guitar"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Guitar "9X12WatercolorPrivate CollectionStill in the middle of the apple project.... This "Guitar" is a rare piece for me. Not because it is watercolor, but because it is probably the most 'modern' and slightly 'abstract' piece I have ever done. It was done some time ago. It was for a young man who is an accomplished guitarist and this was done as a present for him. It was fun to do.....always pushing the envelope and stretching the imagination.Hope you have music in your life today!!

"Stone Bowl with White Roses "12X16Acrylic on PaperArtist's CollectionClick picture to enlargeLost in the petals again..Actually I haven't been altogether happy with this painting. It's the spacial concept that is lacking...while the bowl and the roses are adeptly painted, the background and visual plane seem too ambiguous. Couldn't quite get the sense of place with this. Seems to work more as design...rather than any sense of realism. But I do love the flowers. We are our own worst critics....yes??

Daily Painting Calligraphy, "Placecards for Flo"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Placecards for Flo"Panache Pen with black inkOne of the other things I do....calligraphy. There is a grand lady who is greatly loved by her family and friends and she is turning 85 this week. She was born to a poor family in Iowa, was raised just out of the depression years, married a guy who was a Medical Illustrator for the University of Iowa, had two children, and worked most all of her life in the fashion industry. One of her children died when he was 13. Her husband died a few years ago and she has come here to live with her daughter who happens to be my best friend in town. On top of all of the other things mentioned above, she is beautiful, gracious, generous, and lovely. In fact, as I was thinking of her while doing the calligraphy today, I realized she is one of those very rare people who simply does not have a bad quality. I can't think of one. How many of us will be thought of that way when we are 85? Now why is there a cow among the placecards?? Well, the menu is

"Make Hay"16X20Oil on Canvas$575.00Contact for PurchaseClick to enlargeThis is the second painting of the farm on New Hope, from photos I took just before the land was purchased for a large church project. So this was the very last gathering of hay at this farm. The house is a bit farther off to the right and just out of this scene. This time I just wanted to think about the way the farmer left the hay rolls, some lined up in rows at the edges of the field and some were left lying where they were gathered. Shredded wheat..for very large cows.

Daily Painting Watercolor, "The Littlest Clown"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"The Littlest Clown "3X4 Watercolor on PaperLicensing CollectionThis is pretty much how I feel today. I finished the calligraphy and all of the little meal cards. Spent two solid days on that project, glad to be finished with it, and now I have no oil painting to sell and am wondering why I do such silly things. Few people really want to pay for the time and expertise it takes to do calligraphy, unless it's the White House Correspondence Office, and I'm not THAT good. I'm good, but not THAT good. This project was gratis anyway and done for a good friend. It's a great skill to have and I do love to do it, but can't say it has kept me in clover. Sometimes the occasional wedding project will come up when you spend days addressing envelopes. Those envelopes eventually get thrown away. Ugh.I've thought about becoming Cyrano De Bergerac, writing love letters with my beautiful hand in calligraphy and, at least then, some love-struck recipient is likely to keep the hard work I've

For a few weeks now I have been spending a great deal of time using the other brain on cyber logistics and the other necessities of being an artist such as; looking for affordable frames, preparing supports, studying techniques, etc. (and don't forget playing with Bosley. woof woof) I am currently working on another painting to enter into the "Natural View" guild show...it's a redux and new version of a landscape that I've painted and shown here before, so when that it finished I will be looking for new subject matter for Painted Plums, this blog. Will be back ASAP..

Daily Painting Illustration, "Merrier Terrier"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Merrier Terrier "6X6Acrylic on PaperThe last of the four dogs. Whew. I think the most fun part of this was figuring out how to make the four balls different and yet a design to go with each dog's breed. Not sure I succeeded at this. and this guy doesn't look as "Merrier" as I think of him. I think all of them actually look as if they are waiting patiently for someone to come and get that ball rolling. Anyway....sometimes you just have to get something out of your system. I did.

Daily Painting Nature, "Mr. Toad"
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Mr. Toad"6X8Oil on Canvasand below:Preliminary Sketch for Mr. ToadThis is a portrait of one of our backyard friends. He was hopping about late one evening last fall when we heard Bosley making his funny little "woof woof." This is Bosley's way of telling us there is something here he doesn't recognize and we should come look. Bosley was just lying there, a quizzical look on his face, with his nose pointed right at Mr. Toad. I'm sure Mr. Toad was totally scared to death. He was very puffed up and looking as if he was trying to turn himself into something fierce, unsuccessfully. I brought Bosley inside and grabbed my camera, waited for Mr. Toad to regain his composure and took his picture. I thanked him for the privilege and wished him good evening! Our local guild has a juried art show each year in March at the Schiele Museum of Natural History. It's usually a wonderful show to view with many interpretations of nature from artists residing in four surrounding counties. Mr. T

Scroll down a little further from the piece about me on his site and take a look at the gorgeous photograph he made of the ice on his window. The past few days have been spent wearing out the keys on my computer searching for new avenues of marketing online, reading hundreds of entries on the Daily Painter's group, framing a few paintings for sale, and .... as always, composing new paintings in my mind. The Daily Painters is going through a transformation and at this moment, I am not sure I will be continuing my participation in that group. This means I am still painting, just not exactly for the 'painting a day project.' Meanwhile, I have set up an online gallery at Fine Art America. There is a link on the rig

Daily Painting Landscape, "Make Hay II"

"Make Hay II" 12X16 Oil on Linen PanelThis is a redux, in case you think you are having deja vu. There is some glare on this photo...sorry. Wet paint, you know. The linen gave this one a more subdued feel, as opposed to the canvas support on which I painted the first version. Found a frame with a wheat motif which seemed to bring it together as a theme....thought you might like to see it framed. I plan to enter this one into an upcoming show..if not sold there, it will be available here. The other 16X20 version is available as well. I want this!

Daily Painting Furniture Decoration, "Cabinet Detail"
2007-03-05 23:44:00
"Robin Detail "and below: "Squirrel Nutkin Detail"This is an example of "making your mark" wherever you are. We needed a hanging cabinet. My husband is the adept carpenter with all of the tools...I'm married to the "This Old House" kind of guy and Norm Abrams is our hero!! Lucky me!! Well, the cabinet was made, but it was just a plain wooden hulk and you know the artist here can't have that. So out came the stain, and the paint, and the varnish. I really did have fun with it and it turned out to be just the thing where we needed it. This art is on the panel doors and the tree continues around the cabinet on the sides. I haven't been able to get a really good picture of the total cabinet. (I get a glare from the flash and it just doesn't seem to want to be photogenic.) Anyway, here are some details from it. I really loved the way the wood grain came through in the background. And since you know I live in the middle of Oak trees and, of course, the company of lots of pesky squi

Daily Painting Landscape, "Grand Pampas"
2007-03-06 20:05:00
"Grand Pampas"9X12Oil on Masonite PanelAvailable from the artist$725.00When my son, Matt, still lived with us as a young man he helped with the yard chores. And every spring in North Carolina we are obliged to cut back the monkey grass and the Pampas grass. You can use the mower to cut down the monkey grass and it just pops back up with lots of new growth. But the Pampas grass is no easy cutting job. One year Matt went outside with the shears in hand to do this chore and after a while he showed up back in the house with a big sigh, covered in sweat, asking me for a bandaid. I asked him what happened. Matt informed me that if the little stuff was "Monkey Grass," then the big stuff that has sharp leaves and is such a pain to cut must be called "Gorilla Grass." So from here on, in our house, Pampas grass is known as "Gorilla Grass." This is what I thought about while painting this...and missing my children. Matt is a Major in the Air Force now and has even bigger "Gorillas" to worr
