The Right Man for the Job
2007-02-26 22:21:46
I'm under the opinion if someone is working in the church it should be because God has called them to service.  Believe it or not, I would love for it to be that the Pastor has been called by God, as well as the man cleaning the toilets.  Although I'm not so sure that is the way many today see it.  How many of us look at what we do in the church as just another job?  As pastors I would hope we don't.  But what about the men we choose to serve along side of us?  What about men who serve the body that we have been given to?  I've always liked what Paul had to say in Philippians 2:19-22, choose someone who will care about the sheep just as you would.  As a pastor who cares and loves the sheep, I will look to find others to serve along side me who will love and care for the flock in the same manner.  Yet if it is just a job, not a calling, the servant's heart will most likely be missing.  It's just another job.  It has no priority in their life.  The sheep are not

New Name: Needed, Men who FEAR God in the Pulpit and in the Pew
2007-02-26 18:56:57
We've discussed the Moses model.  We've heard several time's, "don't tell me every government has problems, that's just a cop out"  We've battled over what is the NT style government.  Many voicing their opinion and giving good reasons for thinking it is one way or another.  What I want to know is, if you don't like a particular form of church government, why?  What form works the best and again, why?  So far with everything I've read, everyone seems to have an opinion without an actual solution.  I've always thought you're either apart of the solution, or apart of the problem.  Is it true, does every form of church government have problems?  My personal thought is, if you want a government without problems, the only way to achieve that, is to get rid of man.  If we have a carnal man in any model of church government, we will have problems.  It does not matter which form.  Although, if we have men who fit the biblical qualifications, and truly FEAR

The LA Times Has Spoken
2007-02-28 08:21:44
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-calvary28feb28,0,4379407.story?coll=la-home-headlines Chad, feel free to nuke this post. I don’t know how it will received and it you feel its too stinky, pull it. I, for one, don’t think it was as bad as it could have been. It seems to me it was a lot more, shall we say, honest that the CT article. Setting aside their liberal view of our fundamentalist, literalist position, they didn’t seem to roast CC or anyone as bad as they might have. It discussed Chuck’s mistakes and his regrets for those mistakes. While it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth about Chuck and the current status of the suit (supposedly using then abandoning Lori Pollitt for his own legal schemes), it doesn’t single anyone out as the ultimate baddie. As a side note, I found their summary of the history/origins/cornerstones of CC particularly amusing. Those disillusioned hippies.

Role of the Board Member

Yesterday in my post the right man for the job, I was basically asking the question of what type of men do you have serve along side you. Many times when we think of men serving along side of us we think of Children’s Ministry, Assistant Pastors, Youth Leaders, and Worship Leaders those types of positions. However, I think there is a group of men that should be serving along side of us, that many times go unnoticed as servants. What about the men you place serving on your boards? What do you expect of them? (more…)

You Shall Receive Power and Be Witnesses Unto Me
2007-03-02 17:21:24
I recently received a newsletter for a couple that has a college campus ministry. The theme of the newsletter was based around Matthew 9:37-39. “The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to sent out more workers for His fields.” I’m not sure what translation that is from. And that isn’t the point. Part of the newsletter grabbed my attention. “This time around the verse stood out to me as to who owns the project of reaching others. As I continue to work with this generation, there often are nights I lay my head on my pillow and never feel the work is done. The verse rings so true in my ministry where there just isn’t enough Christians witnessing to their peers. Too many have rested on the coat tail of the ‘professionals’ in the church. I realize that I fall into that camp and often wonder if we, by the title of leader, perpetuate the problem, But then, I realize that t

CSN - What’s A Pastor To Do?
2007-03-01 19:34:55
So, in November God used a bad situation to bless me and put me in the senior pastor seat at Calvary Cheyenne. The biggest struggle I have right now is to decide what to do with CSN. We house one of the 50 or so full power radio stations that are being discussed in the LA Times article. I have spent much time talking to people about what we as Calvary Cheyenne should do. I have spoken with ***many people***. Here are some of the responses I have been given: (more…)

What Does Criticism Teach Us?
2007-03-04 06:23:46
Let’s be honest.. the voices that speak out against our fellowship of churches are heard mostly by two groups: those who have a problem with CC. CC pastors and related ministry leaders.. That’s about it. Look into our congregations, and most of them will be amazed that any criticism even exists out there, for Calvary Chapel. Many of them don’t even know how big of a fellowship CC is. Many have no idea who Pastor Chuck is, or what CSN means.. - Most of our fellow congregants are everyday people who found a fellowship in their community that clicks for them. Obviously.. those who read and participate here… are part of the minuscule fraction of humanity that are aware of the: Christianity Today Article.. the L.A. Times Story.. and the Blog Of Which We Do Not Speak.. (the infamous.. Phoenix Preacher)… (more…)

What if?
2007-03-06 14:27:13
What if you work and labor for years at the church God has called you to, and you see no increase?  Will there come a day, you determine it’s time to throw in the towel? I ask this question because I know that we can get so wrapped up with ideas of great things happening, that we can easily miss what it’s all about.  We can get wrapped up in formulas, thinking if I just do it this way, it will all come together.  We can get down on ourselves when we don’t see things happening as quickly as we think they should.  I can’t even begin to share with you how many times I’ve thought, if I would just pray more, we would have a healthier church.  If I would just…  It sure seems like there are far to many of those “if I would just” in my life.  Somewhere along the way I had to come to grips with the understanding that I plant, or I water, but God gives the increase. Does this mean I just go through ministry with a, whatever, will be attitude?  No!  It does mean though

What about?
2007-03-09 16:59:14
For the last couple of days we have been discussing, what if you work and labor for years at the church God has called you to, and you see no increase?  Will there come a day, you determine it’s time to throw in the towel?  There have been some great discussions going on, some very strong feelings about this subject.  In this post, I would like to shift gears a little and ask: What about the sheep, you’ve been ministering to?  What about the men and women, who have served along side you?  What about those who have invested time and effort, a piece of themselves to you? Rethinking Ministry
2007-03-12 19:50:07
Spending time with you guys and considering ministry has really been a blessing.  Thank you!  As I’ve read through the comments on the smp, after having checked my heart and evaluating our church, I’ve come to the conclusion, that ministry that is not done well, is not worth doing.  Is this a new and fresh revelation?  No!  Am I looking now at the last 10 years of ministry and say it’s not been done well?  No!  However, at the same time, I look and must say there are areas that need improvement.  (more…)
