What do you use your website for?
2007-05-16 20:50:25
I’ve been playing with HTML since Netscape was version 0.x. I remember seeing the first article in MacWorld magazine on how to make a web page (singular) with a picture in it. That was a big deal then. Since then I have always believed that a church website can have a huge potential for outreach (locally and abroad), connecting with your community, connecting with your congregation and keeping them connected with each other. But now I just don’t know what I’m doing. (more…)

missions AT HOME.. and abroad…
2007-05-16 16:32:47
I’m spending this week preparing for my big trip to Nepal. This will be my third annual journey to this country where we’ve been teaching and training pastors and church leaders. This is my favorite kind of (overseas) mission work. Instead of showing up and doing what only we can do, and then leaving.. we are instead, equipping and training the leaders of that country, (very few of them have the privilege of education).. to study their Bibles and prepare their own Bible studies. Most of these folks are geared to learn by “imitation”.. so what they do, is imitate a sermon they heard, make it their own, and add it to their list of 3 or 4 other sermons. It is SOOOOO cool taking these guys through the process of building their own sermon. When the light-bulbs went on in their heads last year (Wow, I just wrote a sermon!!!).. .. it was incredibly exciting. We’re also kicking off our down-town outreach this Friday night. ECPC
2007-05-23 22:44:22
Just got back from the East Coast Pastors Conference, I’m not a great note taker, like someone else, who posted an outline of the conference they went to.  Although others who post here were at the conference as well, maybe they could give us an overview, and share what they walked away with?  For me, I think K.P. from GFA was really incredible.  Setting the focus on simply considering our love for Christ.

What Do You Want . . .
2007-05-23 15:09:31
I had an interesting question brought to me the other day. I was listening to a “teaching” CD of a message given at a home school conference. I am sure I am not the only pastor that receives requests to “listen to this awesome teaching.” Anyway, as I was listening to this guy spout the usual home school propaganda (home schooled kids are better and lead better lives) I received a phone call from a family that home schooled whose two teenage sons had run away from home (to hang out at the public school all day as it turned out). About that time in the teaching the guy on the CD asked the question, “what do you want your children to be?” (more…)

Make It Real
2007-05-29 09:09:34
One of the things I left the ECPC with, was what I felt was a challenge, know what your purpose is.  Know why you are where you are, know what are you trying to convey to the body you have been placed over?  What is it, you are really wanting to see happen in your particular fellowship.  I came up with several pat answers that I always have, but I guess ultimately what I really want to see at our church, is that we make it real.   I want more for our people then the smiley face Sunday morning.  You know what that is, I think we all deal with it, you get up and no matter what life has been like, by the time you get to church, you have the biggest smile on your face.  People are asking you “how’s it going” “great, how bout you?”  Why can’t we simply be real, and invest in each others lives?  Why do we have to try to put on some sort of facade?  Why don’t we share our lives with one another?  On the other hand when we ask how are y

Are you charismatic? No, not like that.
2007-06-01 15:28:28
At the recent CC leadership meeting in Denver the topic of transition of leadership came up during the Q&A. In the course of the discussion the point of churches being built around a single charismatic leader came up. Not that the church wasn’t built by the Lord, because looking at the history of one of these churches the Lord clearly did the work. But the Lord used someone who had a larger-than-average personality to lead, inspire, and exemplify life in the Lord. In my own personal journey (I prefer to call it a “trip” both because it feels like I’m trippin, and because I seem to fall over a lot) I’ve wrestled with myself concerning how charismatic I should be. SMPs @ SPC?
2007-05-31 09:09:23
Dudes, Would someone care to spearhead a get together at the Senior Pastors Conferece? This will be my first one and I’ve only been to Murrieta once for a youth thing, and that was almost 10 years ago so I disqualify myself on account of I wouldn’t know what I was doing (not the first time). It’s been brought up in other threads, but Sean had the brilliant idea of a thread just for this. Regardless of where the “official” SMP pow-wow is, I’m going to In-n-Out. So there.

John Miller / I Cor 8 / Excelling In Grace  - smp06’s notes Grace and Christian Liberty.. 1  Meat offered to idols / bridges to modern day Christian  liberty.  Questionable practices not clearly defined in scripture.  In dif parts of the world, the liberties are seen differently:  Spurgeon smoke cigars and drank.  The church, overall..  shouldn’t divide over non essentials.  Jude tells us to earnestly contend for the faith, but that does not mean fight over Christmas trees in church.  There are two extremes.  Legalism:  Ryrie “fleshly attitude that conforms to a code for the purpose of exalting self.  License:  selfish individualism:  Balance:  liberty limited by love.  Principles of Grace.. speaking to those who are strong (non essentials).. We need to consider our attitudes..  love builds up (1) Knowledge is not good enough because of arrogance and it is never complete.   Consider our brother’s knowledge.  Idols don’t exist, one God, names and rea

Don’t Look Here For The Dirt
2007-06-05 11:00:31
I have 5 minutes before Lloyd goes up to speak.  I just wanted to put this out there.  I’m only reporting the Bible studies.  There’s no CC politics, CC scandals, CC reformation or CC “other” wineskins going on here.  Just in case some of our readers are sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for some dirt, I just wanted to let you know.  Keep sitting there on the edge.  Pretty soon you’ll need to get up and go to a chiropractor.  These guys are here to encourage us in the Word and I hope that I’m somehow capable of bringing their words across.  I’ll be missing 3 sessions today to spend some time with my daughter and son in law, but smp06 has agreed to take notes and those will go up later.. In about an hour, I’ll have the Lloyd Pulley notes up..

Sorry Corby
2007-06-08 22:54:13
Well, I invited Sean to be an smp author.  He tried to get the smp07 name and somehow messed it up.  Then, he came up with the smp007 name.  I know Corby wanted 007…  but he’s stuck being 01..  I debated withdrawing the invitation to be an smp author over this, but determined that it was somewhat petty and surely Corby is able to get over it.  Number 1 is pretty good, eah?  Look at me, I don’t even have a number.  I’m like..  zero.

My Personal SPC Debrief
2007-06-08 07:22:29
The SPC Debrief I can honestly say that this is the best conference of any sort that I’ve ever been to.  Every message was incredible.  As pastors, we don’t get to “go to church”.  This is how and when we do it.  We go, sit, listen and receive.  I think back to when I was on my Teen Missions team.  After 2 weeks of “boot camp” they let us have an ice cold Coke.  That Coke was the most incredible thing I’ve ever drank.  That’s kind of what it’s like this week.  (more…)

Spam in the comments
2007-06-07 13:56:26
Today there were some ugly gnarly comments that were really porn ads. For those of you who don’t know, there are these things called “bots” that people create. There purpose is to go to blogs and post ads as comments. There are various filters and anti-spam programs that are in place to filter them out, but they cannot all be caught. If you see them, understand that they got through the filter and as soon as one of the moderators notices them, they get added to the filter. We apoligize if they get through.

Radical Christianity? (Reaching Back to Our Roots)
2007-06-09 15:00:12
We all love to look back and read the stories of amazing works and movements of the Holy Spirit. Many names have been immortalized for simply following His lead, heading in the same direction that God and His Spirit were moving. Names like Whitfield, Spurgeon, Wesley… and even within our movement, Chuck Smith. We look on at these amazing men and their history and think… “Wow! How radical! How amazing would it be to be a part of something like that?” Radical ? Consider this… The word radical simply means to go back to the roots, the fundamental essentials. With that in (more…)

Corby’s post SPC debrief
2007-06-14 12:13:43
I know, like we need another one of these after the Senior Pastor Conference things. But I found that when I sit and think through something like this, it helps it to gel in my head and heart. Are you gellin? So, unless you are into more debriefing (which is never really brief, can’t figure that one out), skip it. Otherwise, click away. (more…)
