ABC Wednesday - I 2008-03-18 16:48:00 I for Ivan the Kozak.Ivan the Kozak is the name of a restaurant serving Russian and Ukrainian dishes. It's not easy to come with subject starts with 'I', and I don't want to take photo of the 2 IFC, the tallest building in Hong Kong today. This Ivan had saved me from searching further for an "I' photo. Please bear with me that this photo's not a good one. There was not enough light, and the only lens I had with me when I took the shot was a wide angle lens. Please show your support by voting for this blog at the Bloggers Choice Awards

TST-Clock Tower 2008-03-14 23:24:00 Above, the ClockTower
, a declared monument since 1990.As implied by its official name, the Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower was part of the railway station that was demolished in 1977. This tower is all that remains standing.I was interested to find out how the distortion effect of a wide angle lens would work on this tower, so I got the following shots:Please show your support by voting for this blog at the Bloggers Choice Awards

Jardine's Crescent 2008-03-13 06:07:00 Continues after the ABC Wednesday post, Causeway Bay Series - part 3.From the description I found on the Net, the Jardine's Crescent
outdoor market offers bargains on ladies' clothes and accessories, children's gear, bags, and cheap souvenirs like chopstick sets. The market is similar to Central's Li Yuen Street East and West, or Mongkok's Ladies Market. Sandwiched between 2008-03-10 20:58:01 Causeway Bay Series - part 2.Between two taller commercial buildings stands a shorter one, apparently built for residential purposes.Saw this in Causeway Bay. Thought it would be an interesting shot - the residential building and the two at its sides form a perfect construction sandwich. Please show your support by voting for this blog at the Bloggers Choice Awards

Causeway Bay 2008-03-09 20:12:00 From Wikipedia, Causeway
Bay is "one of Hong Kong's major shopping districts. It includes the 13-storey Japanese department store Sogo and Times Square, an indoor shopping complex. There are also smaller malls such as World Trade Centre, Windsor House, Hang Lung Centre, Fashion Island, Fashion Walk, Lee Gardens and Lee Gardens Two. Causeway Bay is one of the most crowded areas in Hong Kong since it contains many trendy shops carrying both locally made fashion and products from Japan, Europe and the United States."I went there with an attempt to find out what else can that place be, apart from all the fashion outlets, commercial buildings and shopping malls or plazas. The first thing I noticed was the residential buildings in the area - and it had never occurred to me that buildings for resi

Shadow of the cross 2008-03-07 12:18:00 This is taken on 1 March 2008, the shadows of the two air-conditioners and the water pipe happened to from a cross.I came to think, or realise one thing as I browsed through my photos taken earlier: every photo contains a combination of things that were there for capture for once, and only once. Each photo is unique in that the things that were captured would not recur or reappear anywhere else in future. If an image is lost, there's no way to find a replacement. As in the above shot, if I wasn't there at the right time or the angle of light was different, I would not have seen the cross. Please show your support by voting for this blog at the Bloggers Choice Awards

HK Tram 2008-03-06 15:25:00 This photo was taken on 30 March 2006. I shot in colour and converted it to Black and white.Five generations of trams had been introduced to Hong Kong since the Hong Kong Tramways company started it business in 1904.I first published this photo elsewhere and viewers said they haven't a tram like this before. Is it unique to Hong Kong then? After a quick search in wikipedia, I found out that except for the UK, there's hardly any other place to find a double-deck tram - trams in most countries are single-deck only. Please show your support by voting for this blog at the Bloggers Choice Awards

, probably taken on a Ferry. It was taken last July, another old photo. But since this one has not been made public before, it can also be seen as a 'new' shot in some way.Speaking of old photos, I recently read a post on photo blogging that suggest:"And, if you go through a stretch where you haven’t had a chance to come up with any new masterpieces, go through some of your old stuff that no one has seen."Apart from making use of unpublished old photos, the post make a few more useful suggestions like writing ahead of time. That is, make use of the blogging features which allow posts be written now and scheduled for publication some time in few future. And the good news for blogspot users is, the scheduled posts f

Exhausted puppy 2008-03-03 22:31:43 This photo was taken a few years back. I was using my first DC, a compact one.Every year there is a Bun Festival in Cheung Chau. Lots and lots of people would visit that island to watch the parade-in-the-air and take pictures. After the parade was over, I walked along the streets to find something else to photograph. After a short walk, I saw this puppy, aslept. I was intended to take only one photo of it and moved on, but its owner was somewhat overly friendly to visitors. He woke it up, ordered it to pose for photograph. The dog couldn't pose anymore, it stumped inside after having performed the order. And I worked out why it was so exhausted: all passers-by were drawn by the puppy, it looked cute. The owner ordered it to pose in front of every camera. And the cameras were numerous. After pos

Wide Angle Flowers 2008-02-26 18:10:39 Wide angle lens is a handy tool for landscape photography, but apart from that, it can be used to shoot things up close. For example, flowers! Every experienced photographer knows that the good thing with Wide Angle
Lens is its ability to take in a lot more than the human eyes, and can focus on subjects that are relatively close. And as Darwin Wiggett wrote in his article, How to Use Wide Angle
Lenses Effectively , "The key to successful use of wide-angle lenses is to get close to your subject? the closer the better. The closer you get, the bigger the subject will be in the frame and the more impact the photo will have. "There are quite a few pages on the use of wide angle Lens searchable on Google. Leave the Technique bits aside, I am pleased with these two shots. They had just been water Read more:Flowers
Lee Tung Street 2008-02-24 18:32:35 The Wiki page for Lee Tung Street
reads "Lee Tung Street, known as the Wedding Card Street (喜帖街) by the locals, is located at Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Involved in a project executed by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA), it is expected to be torn down in the near future. The expected demolition is seen by many as an irretrievable detriment to the cultural heritage of Hong Kong.".By now the once busy and lively street has now been reduced to this:The buildings there were once there are all demolished to make way for the future Wedding City which will "feature Hong Kong's first wedding traditions and culture gallery as well as a social enterprise".The official line is that this can reinforce the local characteristics of Wan Chai. But until the completion of the project, none can be 100% ce
Update & apology 2008-02-24 18:07:20 Apology:First thing first, yesterday a technical error occurred when I was exploring the link splicers feature of the Feedburner. Today's photo:This was taken last October. It was impressively red, or perhaps more accurate, scarlet. But I haven't yet found out what this plant is called.
