Snow Camping With The Boy Scouts 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The dogs and I had an awesome time snow camping. This was our first time snow camping together, and the dogs ended up doing really well. Apart from the crazy people who were hiking in the moonlight at 2 AM!, I had an awesome time with the dogs. We ended up packing in a lot of the Boy Scouts
gear, and we did 3 trips to get it up to our camp area. The next day I took the dogs for an awesome 6 mile training run, and we had a blast! I am going to be sure to camp with the dogs again! Hope you enjoy the pics!As you can see from this first photo, the dogs and I are streaming up the hill with about 100 lbs of gear on the sprint sled. (Right now I am looking into getting a toboggan, as the sprint sled gets a little taxed with that much weight on it.) The dogs and me started on the trail about 10 minutes after everyone else, but we caught up in a matter of moments. Go dog power!!! Here my Dad snapped a quick shot of me and the dogs.It was really, really hot outside, so it got a little warm with Read more:Camping

Training in Truckee 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This training day happened early this season in the Fall, but I thought you would enjoy some "back" photos. If you have any requests for photos, please let me know and I will post them! This is Kathy and I running her 8 dog team up in Truckee. We did a 12 mile run. Magic and Angel are in lead. Temps were in the teens.Even though you can't see her, Kia is in lead right next to Nickel. This was her first time in harness with a team, and she did awesome! She even led the team with Nickel. She was definately a natural! Here you can see that Kia had a wonderful time pulling the cart! It was only about a half mile run, but she loved it! And now, she is a crucial member of my team! It is funny to see how little she looks here, as she is MUCH bigger already!Happy Trails,Christian Hollingsworth Read more:Training
Deer? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 We had a great training run today around the house. I wanted to go 4 miles, but we decided just to do a quick 2 mile run because the dogs started to get tired because they haven't run for a week. The funny thing that happened today was that we were coming up to a hill that I ALWAYS have to help the dogs on. I always peddle up the hill. As we were coming up to the hill, a deer ran across the ridge of the hill. The dogs went ballistic, and ran all the way up the hill. I never had to peddle at all! The little buggers! I thought it was funny that with a little bit of prodding, they had quite enough energy to get up the hill.Should I have my brother run in front of the dogs from now on dressed as a deer?
the atv is all fixed up... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Finally! My Dad and I have spent a lot of time fixing up my old Honda 200 ATV to start using for training the dogs. It's a great ATV, and now it starts up perfectly, idles, and is working great. We put on some new tires, new brakes, and now it is ready to start training the dogs with. Now I just need to find trails that allow the ATV. LOL.Here is the famous ATV! It isn't new, but it will get the job done. The thing I am most excited about is that it has HEADLIGHTS! Then I won't need to use my headlamp when training the dogs at night or early morning. When I was taking photos of the ATV, I couldn't resist going down to the kennel and taking some shots. Here is a good photo of Chevy Cabo. I really haven't been able to post very many photos of him, so here is a good clean shot of his face. Here is another good shot of Chevy Cabo...Little Keeva, the big headed dog. : ) Since I was taking all of these photos ABOVE the dogs, their heads turned out to look huge!Kia contemplating how she i
snow? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Well, snow is forecasted to hit our area and give us a little dusting. We will see though. I don't trust the weather man all too much. LOL.I will definately post photos if it snows. : )
We Got Snow!!! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Finally, we got some of the white stuff! It wasn't much, but we got a little dusting. I thought that we would never get anymore snow at the rate the weather was happening! Just last week it got up to 70 degrees! This was right when it started snowing. You can't see it, but there are pretty big flakes in the air! This is what it looked like AFTER it had snowed! Finally, we have a partially white winter! As I am typing this though, it is all slowly melting, and it is getting brighter outside. Hopefully we get more though. We are supposed to possibly get more tomorrow. Happy Trails,Christianmastermusher@aol.com
Good Cold Weather 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The snow all melted, but it has left us with some good cold weather to train the dogs in.They, meaning the dogs, are doing really well. Now I am actually getting a little nervous with the dogs because they are getting so strong, that they can pull the cart with the tires locked. LOL.I think it is almost time to switch to the ATV.Happy Trails,Christianhttp://www.sleddoggin.com
Driver's License 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I recieved by driver's license! I just took my test today, and I passed on my first try. I am very excited, and now I finally can take the dogs places for training and races!Well, tonight we are supposed to get a couple inches of snow, as well as tomorrow night, and Wednesday night. Hopefully the power doesn't go out, because I have a lot of work to get done on the computer this week! Just another snow day... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Well, we did get snow again! This time we got 4 inches. A good amount of snow. Here are some photos of when the snow was just starting. It snowed very hard, and hopefully we get some more tonight! And let's hope our power doesn't go off either! : )The photos are a bit blury because water got into the lense. They are still nice though.A shot of the local high school...Photo of a local trail...Our street sign, dusted with snow...Cheerful Trails,Christianhttp://www.sleddoggin.com Read more:snow day
Randomness... 2007-03-08 01:39:00 Husky Crossing and Beware of the Dog. Hollow Threats? I don't think so... : ) Chiquita the Chihuahua, the kennel mascot. LOL Looking down the hill I was suprised with a great shot of three black tailed deer. Aren't they pretty? I guess as the saying goes, shoot nature with a camera, not a gun.The Hollingsworth Huskies kitchen. LOL. Here I have bins of dog food, treats, supplements, buckets, ladles, bowls, and much more! This kitchen gets used 2-3 times daily so I have to clean it often! I guess it's a little different than having a standard house pet. ; )Here is what I consider to be one of the most important pieces of equipment that I ever have with me when training and sledding. A dog first aid kit. I absolutely LOVE this kit. It has everything you need for a complete dog first aid kit. It also has plenty of room in the kit for a small towel, and any extra pieces of equipment. I have added bottles of aspirin, hydrogen peroxide, pepto bismol, and a couple other medications. It also

More Training Updates... 2007-03-07 19:22:00 We had a little heat spell for a couple days and the dogs instantly became dead tired because of it. Even so, we are doing 4 mile runs now on an average of 40 minutes. This time includes stops, waterings, problems : ), and any other issues we may encounter. It used to take us 1 1/2 hours to go 4 miles. LOL. It's funny how things have changed! Just today we did a short 2 mile fun run in 15 minutes, which again, is better than our half hour time before. Over time, they have all grown a TON stronger, which in turn makes us go a lot faster! I have also gotten them on a good feeding routine with Animal Naturals and Eagle Pack. http://www.sleddoggin.com/store/All three of the dogs are running very strong, and they are becoming more obedient with the commands that I give them. All in all, they are mostly more enthusiastic about going out on runs! We are all having a blast! Getting ready for our 4 mile run. aircraft carrier... 2007-03-11 08:30:00 Just got back from doing an overnight scout camp on the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier! It was awesome. Today was also the first day of the Chester dog sled races. The races were postponed, so the race and this trip collided, and I couldn't make it to the dog sled race. It's okay, but I sure would have liked to go to the races. My plans are to do some good races next season, when the dogs are more seasoned and a little older.I will post a couple photos of the USS Hornet tomorrow.Cheerful Trails,Christian Hollingsworth Read more:aircraft

USS Hornet 2007-03-11 22:21:00 After arrival to the ship, we were amazed by its HUGE size! It was amazing!Isn't it pretty? Makes you feel kind of small, huh? It is almost 1000 feet long and it can carry 3,500 people at one time! These were our wonderful sleeping conditions. LOL. It made me appreciate my bed! To me, the most fascinating part of the ship was the Sick Bay. It was a little bit creepy as well though! LOL.Cheerful Trails,Christian Hollingsworth Read more:Hornet
Changing Gears 2007-03-13 16:09:00 The kennel is changing gears yet again. It is now too hot for anymore cart training, and the snow up in the mountains is melting at a quickening pace. We are now going to go into the dreadful summer season, which is when all the dogs want to do is sit around and get fat and lazy. It is just too hot for them to do much because of their thick coats.During the summer though I will be working with my leaders on their directional commands on foot. This is called canicross. I will have a small belt type harness connected from me to them. We then go running around and work on commands. This isn't too much work for the dogs though. It will get me fit and ready for fall though when we start training back up again! We will also do obedience training, hiking, and possibly some swimming at the lake. Just to keep the dogs happy, and to keep off the extra pounds as well. I will be sure to post photos of our trips and adventures this summer.Another much anticipated part of spring is shedding season! Read more:Changing

Iditarod :: Is it evil? 2007-03-14 00:50:00 Here is an article from Alaska Daily News that I thought you all might find interesting. It is about the Iditarod, and how organizations try to come out and say that the race is cruel and harmful to the dogs. This is an excellent article and it refutes any of those theories. Also, the second link is a great web site from my dear friend June Price about other Iditarod issues that I thought you all might enjoy. June Price's information is very knowledgeable, and correct. Dog Food Recall! 2007-03-17 17:08:00 Be careful! Right now many dog foods are being recalled because of kidney failure in dogs, and some deaths.http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.htmlThis is the list of affected foods.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17650075/Information on the recall.I hope all of you can find out whether or not your dog food is affected, and hope that all of your pets and animals are safe and sound. Most of the foods affected are the ones that are cheaper foods from discount stores. Read the article for more info.Cheerful Trails,Christian Read more:Dog Food
more training... 2007-03-21 06:01:00 We did a 4 mile run today, even though it was a little warm. Anytime it is under 50 degrees then I am going to take the dogs out for a run. Just to keep them in shape during the summer season. : )Keeva and Kia ran lead while Cabo ran wheel today. Right now I am working with all of them at leading. Hopefully they will all be leaders by fall.Cheerful Trails,Christian
Bikejoring 2007-03-26 23:45:00 For the past two training sessions, I have been bikejoring with tow dogs, while Coleton bikejors with the third dog. Its actually very fun, and fast pased.I still am not so sure about it though as it scratches my bike up pretty bad. Also, it took us even LONGER to do the 4 mile run on bikes, then it does with the 100+ pound cart! It is still pretty fun though, and I hope to use it to train the dogs with better leading skills. There is definately a lot less control when on a bike!Cheerful Trails,Christian

Season Recap 2007-04-02 06:16:00 This season was an awesome learning experience for my dogs and I. I had a wonderful season, and I am REALLY looking forward to next season. These are the total miles on the dogs. Remember though, we didn't start training until December AND both Keeva and Cabo were spayed/neutered, which put them out of training for a couple weeks each.Kia: 131Cabo: 103Keeva: 96Even though the season is "officially" over, it doesn't mean I am going to quit training. You can be sure that during the summer months, if the temp get low in the morning or nights, I will be out with the dogs. I expect to do some night running this summer. As long as the dogs stay hydrated, hey, it gets their bodies a little more used to running when it is warmer, so that way they do better in the fall.I will "officially" start training back up again at the end of June, beginning of August. My goal for this next season is to get 500 miles on the dogs. I know this is a big jump, but next year the dogs won't be as puppyish, and Read more:Season

Petition Against New California Dog Law 2007-04-11 19:50:00 If you have the time, PLEASE help the mushers here in California
by signing this petition to stop the new bill from being passed. This bill will make it law that all dogs and cats MUST be fixed before they reach 4 months of age. This bill will ruin the dog and cat population in California by filling up our humane societies, hurting REAL breeders, and cause even more problems. This act won't even help cut down on the dog population, it will make it worse most likely.http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/414897802Thank you for your time,Christian
Assembly Bill 1642 :: California Health Pets Act 2007-04-14 20:40:00 I just talked with W. Ward, who is the sponsor of the petition most of you have already signed. He sent me this email, which I have permission to cross post. If any of you would like to cross post, go right ahead. He gave us some great information, so I hope you take the time to send emails/letters of opposition to the congress men.The petition has already served one of its purposes: to raise awareness of this critical issue. We submitted the early results to the Assembly
B&P Committee prior to their hearing last Tuesday. We don't know if it had any impact because the committee did not share their thoughts on the issue with anyone. We plan to resubmit the petition results (we include all the signatures so it is a pretty big package already) before each major "event" associated with the bill: the next B&P committee hearing; it they pass it along to the entire Assembly; and then, if the bill is not killed, to the State Senate. Hopefully, along the way the politicians will realize tha Read more:California

Nice Story about Dogs 2007-04-19 23:46:00 This nice little story was sent to me by my good friend at http://www.snowpacksiberians.comI hope you enjoy!!!A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the nice dog walking beside him had been dead for years. The man wondered where this long road was leading them to.After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the tall arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?""This is Heaven, sir," the man answered."Wow! Would you happen to have some water?"

More Photos and Training Update 2007-05-09 00:50:00 Here are some more photos from the day that we spent up at Aunt Sue's house in Tahoe with all of the family. I hope you enjoy them! Thanks to Uncle Adam for braving the cold to take these photos. (he was wearing shorts) It was a fun day. I ended up doing a short 5.5 miles, and I took the cousins on little tours. It's kind of funny to see how far along the dogs have come since that day. This was back in December that this run was done. The dog's weren't that strong at all. LOL. But now, they have no problem taking me on a 7 mile run in the snow, WITH a huge load of junk! : )Hopefully next year will be even better, and the team will be even more impressive! Let's just say I have a lot of footwork to do with the dogs to spice up their leading skills. Good thing I can do that this summer! This is a photo of us speeding down the trail. Here you can see Kia's display of her floppy ears. LOL Going back home after our run... Mom becoming a genuine musher! She did really well! Another sho Read more:Training
