Shops density
2008-05-16 00:01:11
One thing that fascinates me in Hong Kong streets is the way shops are glued one to another, with extremely little space left for walls or staircases. The picture above was taken in Sheung Wan and illustrates this proximity (only 10cm between the two shops). Hong Kong is not that big and every inch of [...]

Subway tickets in Beijing
2008-05-17 00:00:29
This may change with the Olympic Games coming this summer.. but still, one year ago, this was how Beijing metro tickets used to look like: plain paper. And there was no machine to process them, but two ladies instead, manually tearing them before entering in the subway.

Nice reflection in skyscraper
2008-05-19 00:00:53
The good thing with glass-dressed skyscrapers is that they make it possible to reflect the surrounding buildings in a rather neat way. Here is a picture taken in Sheung Wan and showing the road’s opposite side building. You can notice how clean the skyscraper is, thanks to armies of Southeast Asia workers spending their days [...]

Delifrance
2008-05-21 00:02:19
Beware of the name: the food in there is not 100% French but European at best. Still, it may be quite refreshing for any gweilo momentarily tired of eating noodles and rice in cha chan tans. Delifrance shops can be found throughout Hong Kong and prices in there are rather cheap, although being more expensive [...]

Dong holik
2008-05-20 00:00:35
Another great drink here in Hong Kong, on top of dong lai cha, is dong holik (cold Horlicks). This drink is basically made of hot Horlicks with milk and ice in it. Usually served in cha chan tans and other HK fast food restaurants, it feeds quite well (more than plain tea) and tastes like [...]

UI in Airport express
2008-05-23 00:00:03
Other style of UI in the Hong Kong Airport Express (from Hong Kong station to Chek Lap Kok airport and then AsiaWorld expo station): a blue bar filled up as the train goes by. This is rather nice and useful in order to follow the progress of the train. This detail, along with other [...]

Cantonese basics (part I)
2008-05-22 00:00:51
Today we gonna learn a few basics about Cantonese. Cantonese is difficult and more different from Mandarin than Spanish is from French for example (in case you speak these languages too). The difficulty here is to teach the words along with the correct accents. Cantonese has up to nine different accents so it’s quite a [...]

Tamago double
2008-05-24 00:01:40
I couldn’t find it in Hong Kong.. but in Japan, yes they have the Double Tamago burger (i.e. burger with two eggs). Jeez I wish we could have it in Hong Kong as well! Yep, elsewhere in Asia, burgers are different. That’s what they call “Glocalization” maybe :).

Cheun dan + ao yao do see
2008-05-27 00:01:56
As seen two weeks ago, cheun dan ao yao do see is definitely worth a try. Perhaps the most Western meal you’ll find in cha chan tans.

Central area
2008-05-26 00:01:26
Central is a real nice area with tons of skyscrapers and people walking everywhere. By a cloudy afternoon though, skyscrapers appear to be a little darker than usual. To my view, the picture above is only a few pixels away from Batman’s Gotham City.

Burgers are back: TGI Friday’s
2008-05-28 00:00:12
TGI Friday ’s have an outlet in Tsim Sha Tsui (facing the California Fitness on Nathan Road) and believe me, burgers are good there. Along with Delifrance and other western restaurants, TGI Friday’s can bring the good taste of Western food back in gweilos’ mouths for a couple of dozens of dollars more than a basic [...]

The Killer
2008-05-29 00:00:23
Yet another John Chow’s movie starring Chow Yun Fat, The Killer (喋血雙雄) belongs to my personal top three favorite movies by John Chow along with A Better Tomorrow and Hard Boiled. Shot in 1989, i.e. in-between A Better Tomorrow and Hard Boiled, The Killer was inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai, starring Alain Delon. In [...]

Road contrast
2008-05-31 00:00:47
Still on the road (see yesterday’s post), but in Beijing this time. Sellers don’t hesitate to find their way beneath cars and buses in order to cross the road, even though they’re carrying merchandise. People are China’s main asset, but sometimes life doesn’t seem to be so. In China, motorized vehicles have absolute priority over [...]

Traffic cops
2008-05-30 00:02:56
The picture above was taken in Chongqing Road, Shanghai. People are China’s assets, and sometimes several traffic cops are necessary in order to regulate the traffic on such huge roads. In Hong Kong though, there are much less cops regulating the traffic, most likely because streets are much narrower there than in Shanghai or Beijing.

Dong ling tsa
2008-06-03 00:00:57
Never forget that a good ice lemon tea is waiting for you in the nearest cha chan tan! This famous beverage is actually prepared by mixing different kinds of tea with specific proportions which makes it unique and, at the same time, difficult to replicate for foreigners. It’s not just plain tea with ice thrown [...]

Welcome to the Ladies’ Market, Mong Kok!
2008-06-02 00:00:42
A must-see place in Mong Kok, the Ladies’ Market is located on Tung Choi street. Known as a place for cheap fakes, the Ladies’ Market usually attracts a lot of tourists, but also Chinese. When walking along the stands, you will hear some “fake watches sir!” or “jeans sir!” or any possible thing that could [...]

Funny game in Ocean Park, Hong Kong
2008-06-04 00:00:42
The goal of this game is to throw plastic rings around bottlenecks. Not as easy as it may seem though! One can’t guess it from the picture, but playing to this game is actually extremely noisy. The whole game is handled manually by the two workers in orange T-Shirts who spend their time grabbing the [...]

Crepes come from Japan
2008-06-05 00:01:23
It’s a tiny shop located in Causeway Bay.. which brilliantly caught my attention. “Crêpes” are a French specialty, “Marion” is a French firstname, the background on this picture is made with France’s national colors, the word “Pâtisserie” is French (means “pastry”).. and all this is supposed to come from Harajuku, Japan . Now the funny t

Coloured trams
2008-06-06 00:00:58
Trams in Hong Kong are famous for being painted with ads all over. Actually this is not so bad as it gives the city even more colours and (perhaps) helps in keeping the fare so low (HKD 2 for a ride). Once inside though, it’s still the same wood and steel decoration. The ad [...]

Lotus Blue in Beijing
2008-06-07 00:00:45
Ho Hai (PMP) is a famous place in Beijing with tons of bars and restaurants around a man-made lake. The place is really nice, especially at night. When walking around I fell upon this bar named after a famous Belgian comic: “The Blue Lotus ” (French: Le Lotus Bleu), famous for containing clichés about China (in [...]

Stinky tofu, Mong Kok
2008-06-09 00:00:13
Still in Mong Kok (see last coverage about this unique district in Hong Kong): the “stinky tofu” shops on Sai Yeung Choi Street South. Now don’t misunderstand the name gwailos usually give to these shops: despite a strong odor, one can still find eatable food in it. If it’s your first day in Hong Kong, [...]

Satay beef with instant noodles
2008-06-10 00:00:46
Our food referential here at the hong kong blog is growing! This week’s increment is all about Satay ao yuk gong tsai min (Satay beef with instant noodles ). It’s not really a meal on its own, as it often comes along with toasts. Here in China, noodles are either fried or put in soup. Gong [...]

Crocs with fur
2008-06-12 00:00:00
Alright, let’s make it clear from the beginning: Crocs are not a HK brand. Still, I’m not sure there is a lot of countries on earth selling crocs with fur in it. I took this picture in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui. Winters are not cold enough in Hong Kong to wear these shoes.. maybe [...]

Dragon Boat race
2008-06-11 00:00:50
Every year, in June, there’s a Dragon Boat race in Stanley beach (and in other beaches of Hong Kong too). As you can see in the picture above, Dragon Boat is totally human-powered with two paddlers per row, a drummer in the front of the boat and a steerer in the back. This means that [...]

Ocean Park
2008-06-13 00:00:12
This picture was taken in Ocean Park, a theme park created 30 years ago and located in the South of Hong Kong Island. Attractions are rather funny in there (complete list on Wikipedia) but sometimes look a little bit old. It’s now under a redevelopment plan aimed at making Ocean Park better compete against Disneyland [...]

More attractive than Las Vegas
2008-06-14 00:00:34
Macau, the only place in China with fully legalized gambling, is now supposed to be bigger than Las Vegas in terms of yearly earnings. Trip after trip, I could follow the building of its newest casino with a palm tree shape: the Grand Lisboa. The picture above gives us an idea of the building’s size [...]

Sai Yeung Choi Street South
2008-06-16 00:00:29
A picture is worth a thousand lights. Sai Yeung Choi Street South is the vibrant heart and soul of Mong Kok. One week westwards from Tung Choi Street, Sai Yeung Choi Street is full of shops, from clothes to electronic good and restaurants. Don’t be surprised to find stored upstairs too: the street is literally [...]

Singaporean noodles
2008-06-17 00:00:01
Today’s meal is not from Hong Kong but can be found in every cha chan tan: it’s Singaporean noodles . Singaporean noodles can be more or less spicy depending on the restaurant you order it in, but it’s usually eatable by everyone. Said in Cantonese, it sounds like “Seng tsao chao mae“: next time you sit [...]

IFC by night
2008-06-18 00:00:28
Another look at the IFC, by night, from the tram line. As you can see, Hong Kong’s sky is not dark and believe me, this is not due to the camera :). In this picture you can also see the Mandarin Oriental, sadly famous for being the hotel from which Leslie Cheung committed suicide by [...]

Clean and spacious MTR
2008-06-23 00:00:47
Contrary to Paris’ MTR, in Hong Kong the whole platform is protected by glass and automated doors (ok it’s also available on Paris’ 14th line, but in Hong Kong it’s just everywhere like that :). On this picture you don’t see a lot of people and it is misleading: like everywhere else, the MTR is [...]
