Rex Grossman Mans Up to the Media 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Is there any reason to blame Grossman
for his comments? He's been the recipient of some less-than-flattering commentary from media and fans alike. Certainly, he has had his ups and downs during the course of the season. Unfortunately, the media puts more of his "downs" in print and forgets to mention his "ups."Cut the kid some slack; it's gotta suck to wake up every morning and read in the local Chicago papers that you're terrible. Not that he hasn't had terrible games, but let's give him credit when he does perform at a phenomenal level. Read more:Rex Grossman
Schottenheimer Shot Down 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Only weeks after turning down an extension with the San Diego Chargers, head coach Marty Schottenheimer has been fired in the NFL's most shocking move this offseason.Schottenheimer led the Chargers to a 14-2 record, but San Diego fell short in Marty-fashion, losing to the New England Patriots. However, it is surprising that any owner would fire a coach after such a phenomenal regular season performance.Team president Dean Spanos made this statement:"The process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simplycould not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and generalmanager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyondany doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation." This move surprised me mostly because of its timing. I am not certain how tense things were in San Diego, but they apparently escalated to the point where management could not coexist. It certainly shocks me; and while I'm not sure whether Jerr
NFL Tid-Bits 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The Seattle Post-Intelligence Reports:Upon further review, Matt Hasselbeck decided to have surgery on his ailing left shoulder. The procedure to repair a torn labrum in the non-throwing shoulder of the Seahawks quarterback was performed Thursday in Alabama by Dr. James Andrews, and the club said Thursday night the operation was a success. The recovery process from Thursday's surgery could sideline Hasselbeck until training camp starts in late July, which would impede the process of developing a better rapport with wide receiver Deion Branch, who was acquired in a September trade with the New England Patriots. What does this mean? Nothing much for Seattle fans who understand that Haseselbeck is one of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL today. Certainly, building a better synch with wide receiver Deion Branch would be very beneficial, but the fact that Hasselbeck will most likely be throwing with less pain and hindrance is certainly good news. This surgery should not affect his fantasy st
The Forum, Jan 18, 2007 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Tom: Hello and welcome to The Forum
. I am your host and for my discussion today, I have brought two of my friends to debate several hot NFL topics that have some people scratching their heads. I welcome Chris and Shawn to The Forum.Chris: Thanks for having me.Shawn: Same here.Me: Alright, let's get right to the first topic. What is up with Michael Vick? The man has most recently been apprehended in a Miami airport for a clever stashing of "alleged" marijuana. Apparently he hid the substance in a small compartment of his water bottle, behind the label, where it could not be seen when held upright. So, the question is, what is going through Mike Vick's head?Shawn: They didn't prove anything yet; so he didn't do anything wrong if they can't prove it.Chris: I don't really know what is going through his head. Maybe he is feeling bad for getting his head coach fired, because he is a coach killer.Tom: So, Shawn, you're taking the innocent until proven guilty stance?Shawn: Yeah. He
What's Making Headlines 1970-01-01 00:59:59 It seems H2O isn't the only substance within Michael Vick's bottles of water. According to the AP, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick reluctantly surrendered a water bottle to security at Miami International Airport that smelled like marijuana and contained a substance in a hidden compartment. While it could be weeks for the law to decide whether to file charges or not, first time offenders rarely get locked up, though the maximum penalty, under Florida law, for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.Michael Vick's season has been one of ups and downs, mainly downs.Six times during the regular season Vick recorded a quarterback rating that topped 95; however, just as many times his rating fell below 55.But his problems have not been limited to his time spent on the field this season, his most ridiculous and obscene incident occuring in late November when he flipped his hometown fans the double bird. Rumors and More Vick News 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Mike Vick, McGahee, and Sarkisian, OH MY!Atlanta Journal Constitution:In a meeting at team headquarters Thursday, Falcons owner Arthur Blank, new coach Bobby Petrino and president and general manager Rich McKay let star quarterback Michael Vick know of their displeasure with him being involved in an incident Wednesday at Miami International Airport that included police and, allegedly, a water bottle with a stash compartment that held a trace substance that smelled like marijuana. McKay did not divulge the nature of the meeting but he did say the tone was "stressful" and that there wasn't much back-and-forth dialogue.Mike Vick was scolded? Good. It's about time someone gave him a slap in the face (figuratively and perhaps literally, depending on the nature of the meeting). Vick is one of the premier faces and names in all of professional sports, loved for his ability to electrify a football field and hated for his inconsistency and constant whining.Vick had, and to some degree still
Colts Win Super Bowl 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The monkey is officially off Peyton Manning's back; he is the MVP of America's single biggest sporting event. After a quick start for Chicago that included a Devin Hester touchdown on the opening kickoff and botched Indianapolis extra point, the score was 14-6 in favor of the Bears. Unfortunately, that would be the only good news for da Bears in this one. Both Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes of Indianapolis contributed over 100 net yards with Rhodes leading the team in rushing (21-113-1) and Addai in receiving (10-66). And while Peyton Manning threw an interception on Indianapolis' opening drive, his phenomenal clock management and knowledge payed dividends, the Colts
controlling the ball for more than 38 minutes.Manning himself accounted for 247 yards, completing 25 of his 38 passes and launching one touchdown to Reggie Wayne that covered 53 yards. Al Harris Signs Extension 1970-01-01 00:59:59 After what was largely considered a disappointing season for Al Harris
, many pointing to the fact that Charles Woodson was the better corner and teams targeted Harris in passing situations. In the past, Harris was the team's top corner while players like Ahmad Carroll filled in as the number two; Carroll was infamous during his time in Green Bay for his inability to keep his hands to himself. The two year contract is an extension to the 5 year, $18.7 million extension Harris agreed to in 2004. Harris is one of the best current corners never to have appeared in a Pro Bowl. This move secures Harris on the squad, but it is questionable to extend his contract through 2011 considering that Harris turned 32 last December. SuperChargers Hook Up with Rivera 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Ron Rivera
went from defensive coordinator for the best team in the NFC -- and best defense, I might add -- to linebackers coach for the best team in the AFC. Odd, because the position change is essentially a demotion in some respects. However, it could also be a situation of "moving to San Diego to be coach-in-line when Norv Turner fails."The Chargers defense ranked 7th in points last season and 10th in total yards allowed. Rivera is hardly moving on to a "work-in-progress" type team, but his addition should in no way hurt San Diego. His position with the team allows him to work with one of the league's most dominant -- and controversial -- linebackers in the game today: Shawn Merriman. Merriman, as many know, tested positive for performance enhancing supplements during the season and many questioned his eligibility for post-season awards.Personally, I am of the belief that those who test positive in sports should be restricted from receiving awards; they cheated. Is it ever too early? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The NFL is full of surprises every season (New Orleans, anyone?) and I never cease to be amazed and intrigued. Therefore, I am presenting my pre-pre-pre-preseason NFL predictions. Let the record show that this is as of February 20, 2007. In the future, I may do one of these after the Draft, when summer begins, and before preseason. And so, I present to you the official "Blitz '07 NFL Playoff Scenario: Take 1":AFC: This is the dominant conference, as we all know, and top tier teams are a dime a dozen. Naturally, Indianapolis will be a featured contender with Peyton Manning shaking the evil "big game" monkey off his back. Tony Dungy is looking forward to next season and has declared his return. It will be interesting to see how the team handles its defense with Bob Sanders healthy for a full season, barring another crucial injury.San Diego bolstered its defensive coordinator efforts by adding Ron Rivera as an assistant, but one wonders how the team will handle itself with Norv Turner. Tiki in the News 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Our new favorite player-turned-TV-personality, Tiki Barber, has signed with NBC network. His work will consist of the Today show and Sunday Night Football, most likely as an analyst during the pre- and halftime shows.Barber is a great personality and I wish him the best of luck in his new environment. Some questioned him when he chose to retire following this season, but I can understand his stance in the matter. Seeing some past greats turn cripple after their careers have ended is reason enough to respect Barber's decision. Certainly, I and many others will miss his on-the-field play, but his off-the-field analysis will be happily received by me.I personally wish him the best of luck in his latest venture. On a side note, I would like my readers - all three of you! - to take a few minutes to click the links below. Rocky Mountain Rumors 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This latest from the RockyMountain
News:"There have been rumors Denver might send Jake Plummer, Tatum Bell and their first-round pick to Houston for the Texans No. 8 pick in the draft, in the hopes of drafting Adrian Peterson." -- Rocky Mountain
NewsThis news only a rumor at this point, but it makes sense for both Denver and Houston. Jake Plummer is no longer playing any major role in the offense, barring a Jay Cutler injury; Tatum Bell is a bit undersized and is not a prototypical Denver runner... Mike Bell was the goal line and short yardage back during the season; and Adrian Peterson has tremendous upside but is a risk because of injury. If he ends up in Denver and can keep healthy, there is no doubt in my mind that he can perform at the same level Clinton Portis did during his stint with the team -- 1500 yards, 10-15 touchdowns, 5 yards per carry.Texans fans rejoice; you're team is upgrading its two positions that are in need of the most help!
